Weld County Bright Future Program Designed to Strengthen Local Workforce
The strength and vitality of any community truly comes from its workforce, and it’s no secret a diverse, well-educated workforce leads to good-paying jobs and a stable economy. So on September 1, 2015, the Weld County Board of Commissioners proudly launched the Weld County Bright Futures Grant program – a program designed not only to strengthen the local workforce but also ensure Weld County’s economic vitality for years to come. The program is simple. Set up as a workforce development fund, the Weld County Bright Futures Grant Program is a “first-in” educational financial assistance program for Weld County high school graduates, GED recipients and Honorably Discharged U.S. Veterans. It is funded by donations from taxpayers who receive tax incentive payments or credits for their contribution. In order to make this happen, the Commissioners pursued a legislative change through Senate Bill 15-82 during the 2015 legislative session. That change put in place the necessary authority to allow the use of county property tax incentive payments or credits by taxpayers who wish to contribute to a county workforce development fund. While the legislative change allows all of Colorado’s counties to do this, Weld County is the first to establish and launch such a program. The Commissioners feel so strongly about this program and the opportunities it will provide Weld County residents who want to pursue post-secondary education, that they approved the dedication of $15 million to the fund in 2016 to get the program started. During the kick-off event held Tuesday, which officially introduced the program to the public, the Commissioners provided the first look into how the grant program is structured and announced the launch of a new web site, which will house information for both donors and applicants. Appreciating of the importance of trade skills as well as academic skills, the Commissioners designed the program to financially assist high school graduates, GED recipients and Honorably Discharged U.S. Veterans in Weld County who pursue post-secondary education or training from an accredited higher education institution or certified training program. In short, whether a student wants to train to be a chef, a mechanic, an electrician or wants to pursue an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, they can utilize this grant program to pursue their dream. To learn more about the program and the benefits it provides to Weld County property tax payers and Weld County residents wanting to further their education, please visit: www.weldcountybrightfutures.com.
U.S. Congressman Ken Buck, representing the 4th Congressional District, Meets with Colorado Restaurant Association and the CRA Northern Colorado Chapter Members to Discuss issues Effecting the Restaurant Industry
Ken Buck , representing the 4th Congressional District, met with Sonia Riggs, President and CEO, of the Colorado Restaurant Association and representatives of the CRA Northern Colorado Chapter, including President Tim Veldhuizen, of the Greeley Chop House, and Vice President Brian Seifried of the Wing Shack. The event was hosted by Matt Larson at Kenny’s Steak House in Greeley. Many issues effecting the industry were discussed including the attempt to implement the “new employer standard” by the NLRA, health care, labor and wages, overtime issues, and employee scheduling. The fact that the restaurant industry represents the first job opportunity for a many young people was discussed and how raising the minimum wage could adversely impact opportunities made available. Representative Ken Buck shared the frustrations of seeing over 150 bills put forth by the U.S. House of Representatives to the U.S. Senate only to see them stalled, not even having debate because of the 60 vote requirement. The solution to that is to increase the number of elected Republican Senators. A reminder that we do have a US Senate seat up for re-election in 2016. The meeting was productive with a lot of interaction between the Congressman and the attendees. All thanked Congressman Buck for taking the time from his busy schedule to meet with them to discuss issues facing the industry.

Do It Best Country Hardware in Wiggins to Celebrate Grand-Reopening, Sept. 16-19
by Sarah Larino In 1958 Wiggins Hardware and Implement opened its doors for the first time, and in a few weeks from now the doors of the Do It Best Country Hardware in Wiggins, Colorado will reopen once more. In October of last year, Do It Best Country Hardware began a major remodeling project. Besides one small alteration in 2000, when the Hardware became part of the Do It Best brand, the business had not changed its appearance since its beginnings in 1958. Now not only does the Hardware have a new store front, they have added 4400 square feet of store space that will give the Wiggins community additional merchandise and further brand selection. This expansion allows more room for their Rental Center, and will eventually allow Country Hardware to supply lumber. Trish Crites, one of the owners, notes that the expansion was,”—a big investment into the community and ourselves.” She says however that they would never have been able to do it alone, “The design team at Do It Best was incredibly helpful, and Keefe Construction did a great job!” Despite the change in appearance, one thing that has not changed about Country Hardware is their family and community ties. Robert Forsha and Trish Crites are third generation owners of the Hardware store. Ms. Crites remembers growing up working in the store alongside her siblings, ”My mother had a vision—a vision to have a hardware store in Wiggins, Colorado. And she instilled that in us.” The vision that Ms. Crites’ grandparents and parents had, certainly pulled the Hardware store through. It survived the Flood of 1973, where Trish Crites recalls the water filling the store to depths of three feet. However, in the midst of all the hardships, the Do It Best Country Hardware Store has always backed and been backed, by the community. “The community support is the reason we’ve been so successful.” And on September 16th through the 19th the Hardware, Ms. Crites, and Mr. Forsha hope to express that gratitude with their grand reopening celebration. With four days of festivities and something for all, the owners hope that everyone will be able to attend. Not only will there be great demonstrations, deals, and giveaways all four days, there will also be food and fun. On Wednesday the 16th a Ladies Paint Night will be held, instructed by local business the Art Spot LLC, complete with wine and cheese. On Friday the 18th a free BBQ Lunch will be served by the Wiggins’ High School International Club. Tips can be given to them to help raise money for their tour of Europe and the United Kingdom. All of the days feature events for everyone, with fantastic vendors. The owners of Country Hardware hope that the grand reopening will bring the community together as they celebrate Do It Best Country Hardware’s new look and what the store means to the town.
