Weld County Commissioners Officially Opened the Parkway on Nov. 10

WELD COUNTY, CO – The Weld County Board of Commissioners opened the Weld County Parkway on Tuesday afternoon during a ribbon cutting ceremony on the Cache la Poudre River Bridge. Exactly thirteen months after the Parkway groundbreaking ceremony, Weld County elected officials, project team members from the Department of Public Works, Flatiron Constructors and Atkins were joined by the Platte Valley Fire Protection District, the Weld County Sherriff’s Office Honor Guard and Weld County residents to celebrate the grand opening of the road. Also in attendance were the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) Executive Director Irv Halter and the DOLA Reginal Manager for North Central Counties Don Sandoval.

Weld County received a $3.1 million grant from DOLA for this project.

After the commissioners thanked project team members and provided a short project recap, they each cut through a board on a barricade (made from scrap materials) to signify the opening of the road. Once the ceremony was complete, attendees drove north over the Cache la Poudre River Bridge to WCR 60.5 to see Weld County’s first owned and maintained stop light.

“Transportation is a major component of our economy, and this roadway is exactly what Weld County needs for future development,” said Commissioner Chair Barbara Kirkmeyer. Commissioner Mike Freeman stated, “not only is the Parkway an additional northsouth roadway for residents and the traveling public but also a road that is designed to remain open during a flood emergency like we had in 2013.”

Lost Creek Guide

by Bob Grand Holiday time is approaching. In today’s world there is never enough time or enough money to accomplish what we would like to do. We have to prioritize. Hard to do and often we miss something. Try and remember those less fortunate. A small gift can mean so much.

Listening to the debates on both sides there are a lot of good ideas, a lot of not so good ideas. If we were able to listen and meld the best of both we might find some decent solutions that have the possibility of working. Extremes of both parties do not want solutions, they want, and thrive on, conflict.

The bureaucrats and the lobbyists want the status quo. It s good for them, but not the American people. It just reinforces how stupid they believe we, humble mortals, are. It is our job, as voters, to send a message that the status quo is not what we want or expect. We want solutions that are developed with input from both sides that have a real chance of success. Compromise is not a bad word.

Everyone wants to do the right thing. Let us work together to develop plans that achieves results that are good for all the American people. As an example, removing 11 – 12 million illegal immigrants (and I am not sure anybody really knows what that number is) in a short period of time is not reasonable or achievable. Let us start by securing our border and then focusing on the criminal elements that are the most obvious targets for deportation. It would go a long way to help cleaning up our cities. Then let us develop a humane solution for the remainder. America is a nation of immigrants. It is what has contributed greatly to what has made us successful.

Revising our tax code is a no brainer. Ask why we have not done anything yet? Do really think the VA should have paid out over 142 million dollars in performance bonuses?

For what? We hear that the human resource people in government say we have to do that to retain the best and the brightest. Has anybody looked at salaries and benefit levels of government employees? The system is flawed. Now there are many, many government employees that do a good job, but in any organization there has to be accountability. Look at what Pope Frances is during at the Vatican. Talk about churning things. He has the courage to tackle the bureaucrats. Why won’t our government leaders? Maybe because they are not interested in having a good job done for the American people but rather to protect their voting constituency. Everyone talks about the debt issue. We could go a long way to working on that problem by focusing on government waste. I ask you, do you really believe our bureaucracy is efficient?

Yes some peoples feeling will be hurt when asked is their job contributing value. I do not apologize for wanting to reduce our debt and improve government services.

This last election only a little over 34% of the registered voters voted in Weld County. If you like the status quo in Washington then continue not to vote. If you want a better place and future for your kids and grandkids, stand up and tell the politicians you have had enough! Your comments are invited.

Letters to the Editor Is Testing Really What’s Best for Kids?

My name is Brenna Morris and this is my 12th year teaching in RE-3J. During my first year, state testing consisted of taking 6 CSAP tests per year which took 6 hours total. We also gave a benchmark tests three times per year. The total for all district and state assessment was about 18 hours.

Last year state and district testing increased dramatically. My students

spent 32 hours on benchmark assessments and 16 hours on the state assessments for a total of 48 hours. The state did change the testing requirements this year, but it’s not yet enough.

Teachers feel overwhelmed by preparing for and administering tests and it makes it difficult to meet the needs of my students and plan engaging lessons when we spend so much time testing. Please take action locally and at the state level to ask them, “Is testing really what’s best for kids?”

China’s Left Behind Children

by Bob Grand In the Economist October 17th, 2015 issue there were two articles entitled: Pity the Children and Left Behind Children. The stories are quite amazing and disturbing. China’s “unprecedented and transformative industrialization” has had a tremendous impact on the cost of goods that we as American’s import. Many of us neglect the impact on our own economic production capability to save a few cents at the store. What these stories delve into is the impact on Chinese families and specifically the children. The Chinese have a system in place, which they are trying to modify, called “hukpu”, “which is a kind of internal passport that gives people and their children access to subsidized schooling and health care, but only in the places where they are registered. It is not transferable. So rural people are stuck in the rural area. In an attempt to better themselves, many rural Chinese opted to go to the cities where there are jobs but not the ability to bring their children as there is no way to care for them, so many are left behind to be taken care of by grandparents, the state or just out right abandoned. This is an issue many people all across the world face. The numbers in China, however are staggering, because of the size of the rural population. The Economist estimates that there are 61 million rural children in this plight with another 9 million left in cities where parent(s) move to another city for work. That total’s to about 70 million children. To give that some perspective, 70 million is about the total of all school children in the United States. So while we talk about the “Chinese transformative industrialization” miracle at what price for Chinese young people?

Think about this the next time you shop or the next time you listen to talk of the Chinese economic miracle. Where will those young people be in the next twenty to thirty to forty years and what will they be doing? If you are a Chinese leader, with any sense, I suspect you are thinking very hard about that.

Gardner Commends Medal of Honor Recipient Captain Florent Groberg

EDITORIAL: Media Pretend Glenn Does Not Exist

Reprinted by Permission of The Colorado Springs Gazette Never mind Darryl Glenn, the military and political veteran who has won four campaigns. He’s a black conservative.

Media drones repeat a narrative that says no “credible” Republican has entered the race or expressed interest in running against endangered Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.

They report with veiled enthusiasm that Republicans can’t muster a viable candidate to run against the senator who supported President Barack Obama’s unpopular deal with Iran.

When Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler announced this week he would not run, the familiar theme popped up statewide and nationally. Polico, a national political journal, ran the headline: “Colorado GOP scrambles for Senate candidate.” The story quoted an unnamed “prominent Colorado Republican” saying “not a single person in the current field has a snowball’s chance of defeating Bennet or even giving him a serious challenge.”

Sure, just ignore the mid-September poll by Clarity Campaign Labs that showed Colorado Springs businessman Robert Blaha, who is considering a run, only 4 points behind Bennet. Pollsters did not ask about Glenn, who entered the race in January.

The Politico story mentions Blaha and acknowledges State Sen. Tim Neville’s entry into the race Thursday. Like nearly all “no candidate” media regurgitations, Politico declined to mention Glenn.

Despite the media blackout, Glenn has been all over the state promoting himself. He was the only politician with a booth at this year’s Martin Luther King Day parade in Denver, where he met with hundreds of potential supporters. He had a high-profile display at this summer’s Western Conservative Summit in Denver. When Republicans stage an event, Glenn and his team are there and the media look away.

We’re not in the universe of supporting Glenn, or any other Senate candidate at this juncture. We are pointing out a glaring and possibly willful effort by the majority of media to marginalize a well-qualified contender.

Glenn is not some political neophyte looking for a distraction from monotony. He has been elected in landslides to the Colorado Springs City Council and the El Paso County Board of Commissioners. As a second-term commissioner in the state’s most populous county, Glenn represents more Coloradans than any state representative. He is a retired military officer, a graduate of the Air Force Academy, a lawyer and a small businessman.

Given Glenn’s resume and political track record, genuinely objective reporters would not write him off.

One reporter rejected the media pack’s “no candidate,” “no Darryl Glenn” fictive. Nearing the end of her tenure at the Denver Post, Lynn Bartels spotlighted Glenn under a headline: “Republican Darryl Glenn: ‘I’m going to beat Michael Bennet.’” The story quoted established Republicans, including former Thornton Councilwoman Carol Beckler, praising Glenn after meeting him at a political event. There’s a reason Bartels, inducted last month into the Denver Press Club Hall of Fame, enjoys respect from the right, left and center.

The Senate election is more than a year away, and the media are racing to belittle and ignore Bennet’s challengers. Glenn’s candidacy may not take flight. He may not raise big money. But political reporters, feigning objectivity, should stop treating this accomplished black conservative as if he does not exist.

Smoked Turkey

Brining meat is one “cooking secret” that Robert Forsha of Country Hardware uses to make his infamous Smoked Turkey. He said it is a simple process that improves the juiciness of poultry and especially works well on either smoked or baked turkey.

Brining comes from the root word “brine” meaning salt. Basically when you put salt into a bucket of water and add the meat, a scientific process called osmosis begins to take effect. The process seeks to equalize the amount of salt on the outside of the turkey with the amount on the inside.

There is very little, if any salt inside the turkey, therefore the salt and water is drawn deep into the meat fibers of the turkey. The really neat thing about this process is that you can add other spices, herbs, flavoring down into the bucket with the salt water solution and it will get drawn in as well and thereby flavor the meat.

Brining Meat Ingredients and Process The water to salt ratio is 1:16 or 1 cup of Kosher salt per gallon of non-chlorinated water. It usually requires around 2 gallons of water to cover a 12 pound turkey; therefore I use 2 cups of kosher salt.

Here is a recipe for Brining that I use: 2 gal water 2 cups kosher salt 1 TBS Dried Rosemary 3 cups sugar ¼ cup Zatarains Liquid Crab Boil 4 TBS Black Pepper 1 TBS dried Rosemary 1 TBS Thyme ¼ cup Molasses ¼ cup white wine (not cooking wine) ¼ cup Worcestershire Soak a 12 pound turkey in this mixture overnight or 10-12 hours in the fridge.

Smoking the Turkey Place the turkey on the smoker breast side down with the heat regulated to around 225° or so. Make sure you have plenty of smoke flowing around the turkey...I like to use mesquite when smoking turkey but other woods such as hickory work just as well.Every hour or so I like to rebaste with some butter and turn the turkey a little to make sure it is cooking evenly on all sides. Watch the wings and breast and if they start to get too brown you can cover them with some foil.

This smoked turkey recipe is done when the thickest part of the breast reads 165° and the thickest part of the thigh reads between 180°-185°. I will usually remove the turkey about 5° to 10° sooner than this since I know that the turkey continues to cook after it is removed from the smoker and will raise another 7°-10° in temperature.

Allow the smoked turkey to "rest" for at least 15 minutes before carving to allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.

By the way... smoking turkey takes about 30 minutes per pound. using this calculation you can estimate what time you need to start in order for it to be done with the rest of the food.

Effects of Removing Restrictions on U.S. Crude Oil Exports

From U.S. Energy Information Administration website: http://www.eia.gov/analysis/requests/crude-exports/?src=home-b3 Recent increases in domestic crude oil production and the prospect of continued supply growth have sparked discussion on the topic of how rising domestic crude oil volumes might be absorbed, including the possibility of removing or relaxing current restrictions on U.S. crude oil exports.

In response to requests from Congress1 and the Administration, EIA developed several analyses that address these issues. Recent EIA reports have addressed gasoline price determinants (EIA, What Drives U.S. Gasoline Prices?,October 2014), changes in U.S. crude oil imports to accommodate increased domestic production (EIA, “Crude oil imports continue to decline”, This Week in Petroleum, January 23, 2014), options for refinery capacity expansion (EIA,Technical Options for Processing Additional Light Tight Oil Volumes within the United States, April 2015), and refinery responses to higher, but fixed, levels of domestic crude oil production under both current crude oil export restrictions and with unrestricted crude oil exports (EIA, Implications of Increasing Light Tight Oil Production for U.S. Refining, May 2015). EIA also developed projections of domestic crude oil production by crude type through 2025 (EIA, U.S. Crude Oil Production to 2025: Updated Projection of Crude Types, May 2015), supplementing the overall production projection provided in the Annual Energy Outlook 2015 (AEO2015) and updating a previous report issued in May 2014.

This report builds on these earlier efforts by applying EIA›s energy models to directly compare cases over the next decade with and without the removal of current restrictions on crude oil exports. Four baseline cases using EIA›s National Energy Modeling System are considered to reflect a range of outlooks for resources and technology as well as prices, which are key drivers of domestic crude oil production.

Current laws and regulations allow for unlimited exports of petroleum products, but require licensing of crude oil exports. Exports of crude oil to Canada for use there are presumptively granted licenses, as are exports of crude oil from Alaska’s North Slope (ANS

crude), re-exports of foreign-sourced crude, and certain exports from California. In addition, recent rulings by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) have clarified that condensate processed through a distillation tower is classified as a petroleum product and is therefore exportable without a license.2For this analysis, EIA generally assumes that all streams with API gravity of 50 degrees and above (API 50+) would be eligible for processing and export under recent BIS guidance. Through the first five months of 2015, crude oil exports averaged 491,000 b/d. In addition, exports of processed condensate through the first five months of 2015 are estimated to have reached an average of 84,000 b/d.

Although the current policies outlined above are characterized by some as a crude oil export ban, crude oil exports have been rising steadily in recent years (EIA, “Crude exports and re-exports continue to rise; some volumes sent to Europe and Asia,” Today in Energy, October 31, 2014). Even with current restrictions, a further increase in crude exports, including additional flows to Canada and more exports of ANS crude, is possible.

In this analysis, projections under current policies are compared to alternative cases that allow unrestricted exports of crude oil, paralleling the current treatment of petroleum product exports.

Special Report by Morgan County Economic Development Corporation After 53 years of a successful partnership, Morgan County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) has decided to respectfully part ways with the City of Fort Morgan.

During this year, many changes have occurred within the structuring of funding for MCEDC and its investors. One of those said investors was the City.

The City is moving forward with service agreements or a contract between non-profit corporations in 2016. The contract is for non-profit entities providing services in Morgan County and seeking to provide services on behalf of the City.

MCEDC’s Board of Directors respectfully declined a contract of services presented

by Jeff Wells, Fort Morgan City Manager and has decided to proceed without the City’s $17,000 annual investment and their voting member board seat.

“Eleven out of 12 Board of Directors voted recently that it is not in the best interest of our organization to contract or be viewed as a contractor for the City or any MCEDC investor,” said MCEDC Executive Director Kari Linker.

“Our rejection vote in regards to contract for services is so that we do not become a community organization for hire by our investors. A precedence would be set if we accepted, forever changing the complexion and integrity of our organization,” Board President, John Sweenie said.

Within the service agreement’s scope of work, in regards to payment, the City may terminate their funding at any point, due to several issues, such as unsatisfactory work performance and reporting. The scope of work also goes into how MCEDC’s staff is to be handled.

“Opening ourselves up to have funding tied to a quarterly performance metrics would make it hard to manage our budget thus affecting our outcomes. How can an organization be effective in this manner?” questions Linker. “If we move forward with a contract for services with the City, it sets precedence to all other investors that they may do the same, no matter their funding level.”

With more than 100 public and private investors, MCEDC relies on its investors for its yearly budget and cannot plan a budget around a primary investor that may take away its funding at any point, leaving the organization with a budget shortfall.

“We have our investors to report to and keep them apprised of our budget. We hold our organization responsible to our investors and their continued funding,” said Linker.

“The business community and the other municipalities that are current investors are our primary concern. We will maintain support to those investors and help to grow Morgan County’s economy.”

After the decision by MCEDC to move forward without the City’s funding, MCEDC made a request to Wells, to have a meeting with a few council members and some MCEDC board members to try and build a relationship going forward. Wells stated that the council was not interested in doing so.

MCEDC and the rest of the County’s municipalities have had effective and beneficial working relationships for many years and have contributed to each other’s organizations.

“We strive to maintain collaboration when it comes to economic development within Morgan County. We work closely with all of the municipalities and have never rendered contracts for services with any of our investors,” explained Linker.

“MCEDC is a not for profit community organization whose efforts focus on economic development for the whole County. Our investors are contributors to that cause. Investors are members by choice,” said Sweenie. “If we go the contract for services vote, we change our organization to be a consultant based contract driven relationship versus a true partnership based community organization. MCEDC does not want to be a customer to our investors or a community organization for hire.”

MCEDC’s purpose is to further economic development in Morgan County and the various cities and towns located therein, by promoting and assisting the business concerns in Morgan County. Marge Klein Member, Energy Council of East Weld Despite low oil prices, oil and natural gas development continue throughout Weld County. And with that comes heightened interest from the public about our energy economy, in addition to the more traditional questions about local regulations.

To address these questions, the Energy Council of East Weld (the Energy Council) has worked for the past year to educate the citizens of Fort Lupton, Platteville, Hudson, Keenesburg, Lochbuie and Evans about the technology, regulations, risks and benefits of oil and gas production in the region.

With over 22,000 oil and natural gas wells, it is no secret that the energy industry is a major driver of Weld County’s economy. Oil and gas development has been occurring in Weld County for over 60 years, and thanks to advancements in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (fracking), development has exploded since 2009. In fact, in 2014 there were over 82 million barrels of oil produced in Colorado, about 70 million of which were produced in Weld County.

The increase in activity provides jobs, increases private investment and tax revenues and drives retail and restaurant traffic, all for the benefit of economic development throughout the county.

Just recently, the Energy Council partnered with the Ft. Lupton Chamber of Commerce and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation to host a community celebration of increased oil and gas activity in the town. And both the East and West Weld Energy Councils continue to engage community leaders – past and current elected officials, business leaders, community activists and others – through educational events, presentations and by facilitating informative discussions with industry representatives.

For those of us who grew up before the internet, before Black Friday, Greedy Thursday, and the expansion of holiday shopping days, Thanksgiving is the official kickoff of the Christmas Season. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was a big deal – we got to watch something from New York City, live on TV. Wow! Thanksgiving was an important holiday.

It still is. But why does it have to be just one day? It's like we are supposed to just take everything for granted the rest of the year, and then add up all our “thank yous” on one day. Kind of like Mother's Day or Father's Day – letting our parents know they are appreciated one day a year is just not good enough. We try to honor them every day. Why not give thanks every single day?

Not only will you feel good about feeling thankful more often, but finding things to be thankful about magnifies the good things in our lives. It's like you are taking time to savor each bite of your Thanksgiving dinner, not just racing through it to watch the next football game. Everything you find to be thankful about adds flavor to your life.

This year, try a new tradition – be thankful starting now. Don’t wait till Thanksgiving Day. Make thanksgiving a season, not just a day. And remember this quote from Dag Hammarskjold, a Swedish diplomat and second Secretary-General of the United Nations: “For all that has been, thanks. For all that will be, yes!”

Running nightly from December 4, 2015 to January 3, 2016, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., the popular holiday event now features 70 acres of radiant illuminations and more than 150 animated animal sculptures that will jump across lawns, hide in bushes and appear in places where they’re least expected.

Presented by Your Hometown Toyota Stores, this event promises a time like no other in Colorado. Festivities will also include chances to meet Santa Claus, live animal demonstrations, carolers, instrumental groups, ice carvers, delicious holiday treats at warming stations throughout the zoo and the ever-popular Zoo Year’s Eve party.

Some new features this year include the “Electric Jungle,” at the Zoo’s Primate Panorama exhibit. Just before guests enter, they will discover flamingo sculptures in the flamingo pond lit by vibrant pink, orange and yellow lights. Once inside the exhibit, they will find every primate sculpture in one place, such as a giant gorilla and a monkey swinging throughout the plaza. — Obituaries — Donald Harold Hirsch

Donald Harold Hirsch, 67, passed away on Sunday, November 1st, 2015 at Rose Medical Center in Denver, CO. He was born on June 6th, 1948 in Brighton, CO to Harold and Hazel (Shockey) Hirsch.

Don grew up in Brighton, CO. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1967, after high school he attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO where he attended for a semester, prior to being drafted into the military. Don was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1969 and served for 2 years. He served in the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1970 achieving the rank of Lance Corporal.

Don began working with his father as a carpenter. He joined the PRCA and traveled the rodeo circuit team roping for 2 years before coming back to build houses. He rode pens at many feedlots in the area. Don also raised cows and farmed. Don married Kimberly Blair in 1971 in Brighton, Colorado. They were married 43 years. Don was a member of the American Legion Post 180 in Keenesburg and the VFW in Brighton, Adams County Fair Board, Beef Superintendent for the Adams County Fair, West Adams County Soil Conversation, Prime Rib Club and President of Adams County Farm Bureau Board. He also received the Outstanding Adult Livestock Contributor award from Adams County 4-H. He enjoyed his grandkids and watching them at their sporting events and livestock shows, loved being with his cows and a good horse, having coffee with any one, watching rodeos and westerns and fishing. Don was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Hazel Hirsch, Sister Sharon Hirsch, and Sister Sandie Conover. Don is survived by his spouse Kim Hirsch of Brighton, CO; his daughter Keisha (Michael) Kornman of Hudson, CO; his son Joshua (Tiffany) Hirsch of Eaton, CO; his grandchildren Jake Greiner, Jaelee Greiner, Lauren Kornman, Grace Hirsch, Maggie Hirsch, and William Hirsch; and his nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 5:00-7:00pm at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home in Brighton. Funeral Service will follow on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 11:00am at Zion Congregational Church. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 10:00am at Elmwood Cemetery.

Lisa Kilsch Lisa Kilsch, 47, of Keenesburg, passed away November 4, 2015 at her home. She was born April 15, 1968 in Brighton, to Luther Ard and Helen Vaughn. She graduated from Ft. Lupton High School in 1986 and continued her education taking several college courses.

She married Peter Kilsch on September 20, 1996 in Ft. Lupton.

Lisa worked at Platte Valley Medical Center, Platte Valley Ambulance and drove busses for Weld County School District RE3-J and was a member of Fourway Baptist Church in Ft. Lupton. In her free time, Lisa enjoyed volunteering at the schools that her children attended. She also enjoyed reading, making crafts, listening to music and cooking for her family.

Lisa is survived by her husband, Peter Kilsch of Keenesburg; four children, Paul (Kendree) Kilsch of Rogers, AR, Joshua (Andi) Kilsch of Salina, KS; Sarah and Hannah Kilsch of Keenesburg; brother, Dormus Vaughn of Sturgis, SD and four grandchildren.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 1:00pm at Fourway Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Mizpah Cemetery in Platteville.

Kathie Jo Aden

Tribute for Kathie Jo Aden Kathie Jo Aden, 65, of Hudson, Colorado left her earthly pilgrimage to eternal fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ on October 30, 2015. Kathie was born in Longview, Washington on April 8, 1950 to Clinton C. Edgar and Mavis K. (Waite) Edgar. As a small child, the family moved to Colorado where they lived in various locations in the Denver metro area until settling in Northglenn, Colo. in the early 1960’s where Kathie attended school and graduated from Northglenn High School in 1968.

Her great adventures began on June 7, 1969 when she married Charles L. Aden and they built a rich life together in Colorado and Wyoming. Their greatest joy was their two children, Mark and Denise born in the mid 1970’s. Kathie briefly worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. until her husband completed his undergraduate degree when they moved to Chugwater, Wyoming and worked for Warner Ranches on the Double L west of Chugwater. Kathie began with enthusiasm to develop her awesome careers of cooking, canning, sewing, gardening, motherhood along with many outdoor skills of camping, fishing, hiking and processing game for the family in Wyoming then continued when they moved back to Colorado. She and the family traveled extensively by car, ship and private aircraft across the U.S. with trips to Mexico, Canada and Alaska. In 2001 they moved their small custom beef operation from Henderson, Colo. to Hudson, Colo. and expanded the operation now named Coyote Hill Land & Cattle. Kathie embraced and dearly loved the rural life as she partnered with her husband. Although her life was shortened by a two year battle with cancer, she lived a full and engaging life. Her life was an excellent example of the description of an honorable wife in Proverbs 31: 10-31, with the value of an honorable role as summarized by what Solomon recorded in Proverbs 12:4a.

Kathie is survived by her husband of 46 ½ years, Charles, her children Mark L. & (Staci) Aden of Brighton, (Sean) & Denise R. Davis of Broomfield, Colo., her mother Mavis K. Edgar and sister (Ron) & Linda Lewis of Fort Collins , Colo., her sister (Bradley) & Kim Cramer of Houston, Texas, her brother Randy & (Gloria) Edgar of Golden, Colo., her loved grandchildren Hallie & Audrey Davis, Kaleb & Jacob Aden, her mother-in-law Carrie L. Aden of Brighton, Colo. Kathie was preceded in death by her father, Clinton C. Edgar, grandparents Wayland & Mary Waite, Claude & Ida Edgar and infant granddaughters Jillian & Sarah Aden and infant grandson Noah Aden and father-in-law Everett L. Aden.

How Oil and Gas Disposal Wells Can Cause Earthquakes

Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” (a drilling process that injects millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals under high pressure into a well, cracking the rock and to release natural gas and oil) has only been known to rarely cause earthquakes.

But the disposal of drilling wastewater used in fracking has now been scientifically linked to earthquakes. The fluids used in fracking (and the wastewater that comes back up the well) is disposed of by injecting it into disposal wells deep underground. This is generally regarded as the safest, most cost-efficient way to get rid of it. But in some parts of the country, especially in the Barnett Shale area around Dallas-Fort Worth, it has also been causing earthquakes. And they’re growing both in number and strength.

How Fracking Disposal Wells Can Cause Earthquakes The culprit of earthquakes near fracking sites is not believed to be the act of drilling and fracturing the shale itself, but rather the disposal wells. Disposal wells are the final resting place for used drilling fluid. These waste wells are located thousands of feet underground, encased in layers of concrete. They usually store the waste from several different wells.

drilling wells, according the the Railroad Commission. Each well uses about 4.5 million gallons of chemical-laced water, according to hydrolicfracturing.com.

“The model I use is called the air hockey table model,” says Cliff Frohlich, a research scientist at the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin. “You have an air hockey table, suppose you tilt it, if there’s no air on, the puck will just sit there. Gravity wants it to move but it doesn’t because there friction [with the table surface].”

But if you turn the air on for the air hockey table, the puck slips.

“Faults are the same,” he says. If you pump water in a fault, the fault can slip, causing an earthquake.

“Scientists in my community know that injection can sometimes cause earthquakes,” Frohlich says.

The science linking manmade earthquakes to the oil and gas industry isn’t anything new.

Decades ago, researchers even found they could turn earthquakes on and off by injecting liquid into the ground, says Dr. William Ellsworth with the Earthquake Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey.

“This was seen as validation of the effective stress model,” he told StateImpact Texas. “This is work that was published in Science magazine and many other publications.”

Shale. The productive portion of the Barnett Shale is located directly beneath Johnson, Tarrant and western Dallas counties, about a mile and a half underground. The shale contains an estimated 40 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, making it the largest onshore natural gas field in Texas and potentially in the United States.

A University of Texas at Austin from study last summer found a definitive link between earthquakes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and disposal wells in the Barnett Shale.

And an earlier study by scientists at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and UT found links between disposal wells near the DFW airport and induced earthquakes for a series of quakes in 2008 and 2009. The study specifically looked at two injection wells in the area that were built in 2008. Seven weeks later, earthquakes started. “Were the DFW earthquakes natural or triggered by activities associated with natural gas production, most likely saltwater injection to dispose of brines?” the report asked. The study said yes, the “correlations are consistent with an induced or triggered source.”

cont. from Page 12 The quakes studied from that two year period were all 3.0 magnitude or below, but in the years since there have been several quakes above 3.0 in the area, going as high as 3.5. There have been more than fifty earthquakes in the area since 2008.

It’s important to note that the earthquakes haven’t caused any reported significant damage. Generally an earthquake has to be magnitude 4.0 or higher to cause damage. But locals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are disturbed and concerned about the trend of manmade seismic activity.

And there’s the open question of what kind of damage these induced quakes can do to drilling infrastructure. It’s plausible that the tremors could affect well integrity, Frohlich says. “In my business, you never say never. That said, most of the time these earthquakes are not right near the well. But it’s possible an earthquake could hurt a well,” he says, though he knows of no instances where that’s occurred.

It’s also important to note that there a tens of thousands of injection and disposal wells in Texas, yet only a few dozen of them are suspected of inducing quakes. It’s also true that disposal and injection wells have been known to induce seismic activity since the 1960s. What’s happening now is that with the rise of fracking, there is a need for more disposal wells. And in areas where fracking waste water is disposed of near population areas, it’s going to be noticed more.

Recent Earthquakes in Texas South Texas experienced a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in Oct. 2011 near the Eagle Ford Shale Play, which is home to over 550 gas wells. There have been many other earthquakes linked to injection wells in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, over 50 since 2008. There were no earthquakes before then. The most recent quake was 3.0 magnitude on January 22, just outside the DFW airport. You can read about other recent quakes in the stories below.

And the quakes aren’t limited to Texas. Ohio experienced a magnitude 4.0 earthquake earlier this year near the town of Youngstown. The New York Times reported that Ohio officials believe this quake, the eleventh such event in Youngstown in 2011, was the result of disposal wells. Ohio stores much of Pennsylvania’s fracking waste in those wells.

Are the earthquakes getting bigger?

Art McGarr, of the US Geological Survey’s Earthquake Science Center, has been looking at whether the amount of fluid stored in a disposal well affects the strength of an earthquake. The question is that as wastewater stays in the disposal wells longer and more and more fluids are added, will the quakes become stronger?

His answer: they will.

“I think we’re at the point when, if you tell me that you want to inject a certain amount of waste water, for example a million cubic meters for a particular activity, I can tell you that the maximum magnitude is going to be five (on the rictor scale) or less. I emphasize or less,” McGarr said in a recent presentation.

The findings contradict the notion that the rate at which waste fluids are injected in a disposal well impacts the chance of quakes, but it raises another concern. If the findings are correct, they mean the longer a disposal well is injected with fluid, the greater the likelihood of a stronger quake. That means that older wells still in use across Texas and the rest of the country could be growing more and more prone to producing larger earthquakes.

“With time, as an injection activity continues, so will the seismic hazard as measured by the maximum magnitude,” said McGarr at the close of his presentation.

Beta Epsilon #357 of Epsilon Sigma Alpha has had a full schedule since the installation of officers. President Stephanie Bearden, is leading the group with her theme “ESASomething to Crow About. Officers serving with her are vice president Shirley Chapin, treasurer Alberta Simmons, parliamentarian Cindy Powers and Educational Directors Paula Kopetzky and Vivianne Lorenzini.

The chapter members participated serving both the Relay for Life and the WALK to End Alzheimer’s. Besides helping on the committees the group donated over $4000 to the two projects. Funds were donated to the ESA Disaster Fund and the ESA Foundation. An ongoing project is making and donating holiday favors to the residents of the Bee Hive. A traditional project continues to donate hats and gloves to the students in the third grade at Columbine School in honor of former teacher Mary Alice Covelli. The chapter is currently working on a display for the Vision of Trees.

Lorenzini and Kopetzky have led the group in interesting programs. The details of the 2016 IC Convention to be held in Loveland hosted by the Rocky Mountain Regional Council were reviewed for the week-long event. Colorado State Council is a member of RMRC and will be participating with the conference. “What is Stress and How to Overcome Stress” was well received as the membership learned the top 10 way to enjoy a stress-filled life. In remembrance of Veteran’s Day “Ultimate Survivors”, the longest surviving Veterans from the Revolution War to World War I was presented. Information was described on the 11 survivors of these wars. An interesting fact about each of these Veterans was that they were all over 98 years old. The oldest being Frank W. Buckles of the U.S. Army, serving in World War 1.

He enlisted at the age of 16 was 110 at time of death in 2011. Many of the Veterans enlisted in their early teens. They served their country well.

Cindy Powers and Gertie Chapin attended the Colorado State Council fall meeting.

President Vickie Martinez of Denver led the two day conference with her theme “ESA Flying High on Eagles Wings”. Plans were on the schedule for Colorado sharing in the 2016 IC convention. Powers donated time at the ESA Dream House in Denver. The house is a raffle with funds going the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Beta Epsilon was chartered in May of 1944. The chapter has been an activity organization in community for over 70 years. The international headquarters is in Fort Collins.

Short-Term Energy and Winter Fuels Outlook

-From the U.S. Energy Information Administration website: http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/steo/ EIA projects average U.S. household expenditures for natural gas, heating oil, and propane during the upcoming winter heating season (October 1 through March 31) will be 10%, 25%, and 18% lower, respectively, than last winter, because of lower fuel prices and lower heating demand. Forecast lower heating demand and relatively unchanged prices contribute to electricity expenditures that are 3% lower than last winter (Winter Fuels Outlook slideshow).

North Sea Brent crude oil prices averaged $48/barrel (b) in September, a $1/b increase from August. However, volatility remained high during September. EIA forecasts that Brent crude oil prices will average $54/b in 2015 and $59/b in 2016, unchanged from last month’s STEO. Forecast West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices average $4/b lower than the Brent price in 2015 and $5/b lower in 2016. The current values of futures and options contracts for January 2016 delivery (Market Prices and Uncertainty Report) suggest the market expects WTI prices to range from $32/b to $67/b (at the 95% confidence interval) in January 2016.

U.S. regular gasoline monthly retail prices averaged $2.37/gallon (gal) in September, a decrease of 27 cents/gal from August and $1.04/gal lower than in September 2014. EIA expects monthly gasoline prices to decline to an average of $2.03/gal in December 2015.

EIA forecasts U.S. regular gasoline retail prices to average $2.38/gal in 2016.

EIA estimates that total U.S. crude oil production declined by 120,000 barrels per day (b/d) in September compared with August. Crude oil production is forecast to decrease through mid-2016 before growth resumes late in 2016. Projected U.S. crude oil production averages 9.2 million b/d in 2015 and 8.9 million b/d in 2016.

Natural gas working inventories were 3,538 billion cubic feet (Bcf) on September 25.

This level was 15% higher than a year ago and 4% higher than the previous five-year average (2010-14) for this week. EIA projects inventories will close the injection season at the end of October at 3,956 Bcf, which would be the highest end-of-October level on record.

What a Difference a Bye Week Makes

By Chris Rymes, Carbon Valley Independent The Denver Broncos headed into their bye week with a 6-0 record which sounds perfect on paper. Funny how things look different in real life than on paper, because the word perfection was the last word anyone used to describe the Broncos as they entered their bye week.

Fans had been grumbling over Peyton Manning’s performance the same way one complains about the weather: “Don’t like it, and when will it stop”. Many of the Broncos faithful were so upset with Manning’s performance they were actually begging the team to bench the first ballot Hall-of-Famer and throw the keys to a game-untested Brock Osweiler. All the unrest from the fans and the media would have one believing the team was actually 0-6 instead of 6-0.

Then the bye week happened and change was in the air both figuratively and literally. The temperatures dipped and the leaves started to change color, but meteorological transformations weren’t the only changes occurring. The Broncos were busy spending their bye week making corrections to their offensive schemes and meticulously planning how to improve a struggling offense. As the week passed, the unrest turned into apprehension as the biggest test of the season remained directly in front of the Broncos. The mighty Green Bay Packers, led by Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, came into town as favorites to win the game and prove the Broncos 6-0 record was a lie.

But then the unexpected happened and the sky stopped falling as the Broncos “No Fly Zone” defense held Aaron Rodgers to a net 50 yards for the game (that is not a typo). The Broncos offensive line gelled for the first time this season, allowing Manning to complete 21-29 passes for 340 yards as the Broncos offense piled-up 500 total yards in a 29-10 drubbing of the Packers to improve their unblemished record to 7-0.

One day later the Broncos demonstrated their efforts to improve the offense by addressing the team’s deficiency at the tight end position when they acquired two-time Pro Bowler, Vernon Davis, in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. Davis’ distinct ability to run wheel routes and seam routes will stretch the defense and open up the middle of the field for Manning and the offense to operate. This will allow Manning to complete more downfield passes to his primary receivers, which will effectively set up the run game. Expect Davis to make an immediate impact for the Broncos, especially in the red zone, where they’ve struggled to score due in part to the off-season departures of wide receiver Wes Welker and tight end Julius Thomas.

The re-tooling of the offense, a big win versus the Packers, and the addition of Vernon Davis should help propel that apprehension into confidence. The Broncos offense showed glimpses of the “old” high powered scoring machine fans have been accustomed to seeing.

Combine that with a Broncos defense which has the ability to be ranked among the best of all-time, the Broncos would truly be scripting a mile high magical season.

As we know from past experience, greater use of natural gas in power generation is a major driver for reducing carbon emissions – and other pollutants – from this sector. This news from EIA follows a separate report by EPA that the oil and gas industry reduced methane emissions in 2014 by 13 percent just since 2011. This reinforces the trend where our methane emissions drop even while production goes up. These are promising signs as our nation works toward a cleaner environment and a stronger economy.”

MCC Jazz Ensemble’s Winter Concert

Fort Morgan, CO. 11/09/15. The turkey season is nearly upon us, and soon it’ll be time to deck the halls. To add to the holiday spirit, the MCC Jazz Ensemble is ready with their Winter Concert, scheduled for Sunday, November 22 at 7 p.m. in the Fort Morgan Middle School Auditorium.

The concert, led under the direction of Ron Pflug, will feature music of the 1920’s as well as the more traditional Big Band sound.

WELD COUNTY, CO – On Monday, the Weld County Board of Commissioners proclaimed November 20, 2015, as Weld County Adoption Day. The 16th Annual National Adoption Day will be November 21, 2015, and will bring attention to the importance of adoption for the more than 100,000 children in the United States foster care system.

In Weld County, more than 30 children are waiting to be adopted. In an effort to help these children find permanent and nurturing families, the Weld County Department of Human Services (DHS) Adoption Unit and 19th Judicial District will join together for a special celebration on Friday, November 20. On this day, Weld County adoptions will be finalized from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and an adoption celebration room will be available at the Weld County Court House to all families who complete their adoptions.

Weld Food Bank Seeks Turkeys

GREELEY, November 4 -- The holidays are quickly approaching and 34 of Weld Food Bank’s partner agencies have requested 4,500 turkeys this year for families in need. Additionally, they have requested 4,467 potatoes, 4,929 cranberries, 8,260 green beans, 7,369 mushroom soups and 6,472 boxes of stuffing to make holiday food baskets or hot meals for the people they serve. Currently, the food bank has 0 turkeys on hand. While doing your holiday shopping, be sure to pick up a turkey to donate and help provide holiday meals for families who otherwise would not have one.

Turkeys can be dropped off right now at the Weld Food Bank warehouse located at 1108 H Street in Greeley, Monday-Friday 8:00-4:00. Once again, this year Wing Shack is partnering with the food bank to collect turkeys at their Garden City, West Greeley and Windsor locations. Anyone who donates a turkey at one of those three locations will receive 6 free wings. On top of that, Wing Shack will also make a $5 donation per turkey to Weld Food Bank.

Lastly, the food bank will be holding their annual Turkey Drive on Saturday, November 21 from 8am to 3pm at select locations. Make a difference this holiday season by taking part in the Turkey Drive.

The participating stores are: Walmart on 47th Avenue, Sam’s Club and both Safeway locations in Greeley, as well as Ken Pratt Walmart in Longmont. Donations can also be made at the food bank warehouse on that day.

The Broe Group and CPPIB Lead Acquisition of DJ Basin Oil & Gas Assets from Encana in $900 million Transaction

A group of local singers from the Grover, Hereford and Briggsdale areas presented an I Love This Land, a patriotic musical, at the Hereford Church on Sunday, November 15 at 11 a.m. in honor of Veterans’ Day and Thanksgiving. The choir is composed of director, Erin Flaharty (who currently is a music instructor for Weld RE3J schools), Pastor Carol Opdycke, Steve and Jan Hauer, Karel Smock, Shirley Wiggin, and Kathy Zitek from Grover/ Hereford, and Rita Johnston, Merietta West, and Teri Jewell from Briggsdale. The Prairie Songbirds have been singing since approximately 1999 and each year present a patriotic musical and Easter musical. Over the years new faces and voices have been added and others have gone, but the group’s singing remains something to hear. Prior to this presentation, the group has sung at the Amico Club in Greeley and at Briggsdale Congregational Church. If you want to hear a really uplifting and patriotic cantata, this is it. Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings was served following the musical.

By Brianna McBride Agriculture has been in my family for years so it’s natural for me to show, raise, and judge dairy cattle and be a part of 4-H and FFA. I never fully understood the opportunities I had through these programs though until the last couple years. Through the newsletters and activities I heard about through other members, I became more and more involved and began to really love 4-H and FFA. One of the parts of 4-H that took a while to fully understand was the record books.

Setting goals, recording feedings, or tracking all purchases seemed like a hassle to me.

I realized this year though, that this is how a business is made, and I already do most of it to begin with.

Setting goals is probably my favorite part. I have some of my goals on my whiteboard such as “Become a state FFA officer” or “Dairy judge at the World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin” or “Compete in round robin at the Weld County Fair”. The best feeling in the world is being able to erase them once you’ve accomplished them and write a new Visiting and petting my Milking one. It sounds cheesy, I know, but it helps Shorthorn heifer Kordyn. and really makes a difference. Having that goal for a couple years before I actually accomplished it made getting there so much sweeter.

This isn’t to say that I’ve accomplished all of my goals or have always had people behind me. My goals haven’t been accomplished without the support of the people around me and their investment in my passions. When it was my first year in FFA, my advisor constantly encouraged me to compete in the FFA Creed. Without that push from him, I might never have competed in prepared speaking the next year and later compete at the state level. Now it is something I love to do, and I look forward to public speaking even though I used to be the most shy and quiet girl in the class.

A fair-well message from Olivia and Dan Burgess: “We will be leaving this lovely Valley on Friday, October 23rd and heading to our new home in Castle rock. It a bitter sweet move, as we will so miss all the wonderful friends we have made these last 16 years, our church at Goodrich and the slow pace life and beautiful country surroundings. But, the time has come when we need to be nearer to family and health facilities. We hope you will all keep in touch via e-mail and Facebook and if you’re every passing through Castle Rock, please drop by and visit.

Joy and Milo Wilson enjoy a sort trip to Oklahoma to visit their daughter Katie Denny and family. A great time was had by all.

A Halloween hay rack ride was enjoyed through Orchard with the Andy Wilson and family. There were many well dressed “trick and treaters” visiting through- out the Valley on Saturday evening.

Carol Baber had a great trip to Las Vegas. Upon her return her grandson Todd visited for a few days before he traveled to California for his job.

Church chat: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Weldon has mass each Sunday at 7:00 a.m., with Father Frank Garcia. On Sunday, The men of the Knights of Columbus will be serving breakfast after mass on the second Sunday each month.

The Weldon Valley Presbyterian in Goodrich has Christian education and worship at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday. Pastor Brad Gustatson of Loveland joined the congregation on Sunday.

Pastor Donna Herman of La Salle will serve from November 8 through January 3.

She has been with the congregation before and is excited about serving the community.

The Women’s Bible study met in regular session at the church with Susan Kammerer as hostess. The meeting was open with the dedication of the Thank Offering. Roll call was answered with a discussion of use of the “Star” word. Cards of cheer were sent to many in the community.

Reports were received and holiday activities discussed. The second Sunday of each month the food distribution is conducted at the church my KATB. “Greatly Honored Are the Peacemaker” from the Confessing the Beatitudes Bible study was lead by Sammie Covelli. The key idea was “Jesus honors those who work for shalom as his own sisters and brothers, children of God.” When defining Peace and Peace maker the group declared that all are peacemaker when they share with other to aid in bring contentment. The lesson was closed with prayer.

Refreshments were served and the group continued their discussion.

Upcoming events at the church include the “Hanging of the Greens” on November 30th.

School scoop: Congratulation to the Warrior of the Month, Blake Covelli, Mickey, and Greg Wheaton, thank you for your service. Wacky Wednesday, the first Wednesday of the month, will be “Hats off to Reading”. Students K- 12 are encouraged to wear Wacky hats for a special time to read.

The PTO is encouraging all too safe box tops and soup labels. Each box top raises money for the school. Save your box tops!

The sixth grade class would like to thank all who purchased cinnamon rolls. This program will help fund the annual Out-door Education Program this spring.

4-H News: After a very successful year of activities Weldon Valley 4-H held their first meeting of the new year. Officers, president Kirsten Wood, vice president Kandice Knapp, treasurer Connor Wood , reporter Nicole Doll led the meeting. Secretary Michael Cline and activity director Cylee Matheson had moved from out the county. Early enrollment is ready. Registering for the new 4-H is online or for more information go the Morgan County Extension Website. Plans were made for the Afterschool Program to be held later in the fall at the school. Election of officer was held and they will be installed at the annual Achievement Night. The Achievement Night is set for November 8th. 5:30 p.m. at the Weldon Valley School cafeteria. Parents and family member are invited to attend this important and fun activity.

The 2015-2016 officers will be installed at the Club’s Annual Achievement Dinner. They are: President Kirsten Wood, Vice president Kandice Knapp, Secretary Kenndra Filter, Treasurer Jon Baessler, Reporter Nicole Doll, Activity Director Levi Hawkins.

It was a birthday celebration when the members of the G.L.A.D. Club met at the home of Joan Lambert with Opal Cooper as co-hostess. Isbell Thompson was honored on the occasion of her 93th birthday. The members showered her with birthday cards. She blew out the candles on a beautiful cake which was served with ice cream. It was a joyous time.

The meeting was opened with the pledge to the flag. Veterans and those current serving were remembered. In honor of Veteran’s Day Sammie Covelli read prayer delivered in 1947 by Reverend Peter Marshall to the U.S. Congress. Roll called answered by twelve members with “What I am Thankful For”, family and health were top on the list. Many cards were sent to community member in need of cheer. Items were brought by the membership to be given to the S.H.A.R.E. Inc program. An up-date on the progress on the road directory sign was presented. Road 5 has been completed and is in place. Road 6 and Y.5 are being completed. The Christmas luncheon will be held on December 1. The installation of new officers will be conducted. A “white elephant” gift exchange will be held.

It was announced that there is a program to use a green light on your porch to let Veterans see we are remembering them. The school newsletter was reviewed. The PTO is encouraging all to save box tops and soup labels. They can be redeemed for school projects. Best wishes were expressed to member Chris Ahrens in the opening of her restaurant “Hug 39” in Wiggins.

The Morgan County Emergency Management director presented film on damages cause by flooding demonstrating the dangers of driving into flooding waters. During his presentation he urged all to use a NOAA Weather Radio to obtain the comprehensive weather information. NOAA stands for national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. During threatening weather, live broadcast are made of warning for high winds, large hail, tornadoes, flash floods and winter storms. NOAA Weather Radio can purchase at many electronic stores. Everyone received a Citizen Emergency Preparedness Guide prepared by the Northeast Colorado Offices of Emergency Management. Aims Community College Works to Meet Workforce Needs in Weld County

Aims Community College is quietly forging powerful opportunities for students to find affordable options as they find their new career or get started on the path to a four-year degree. With 160 available programs and through partnerships with local industry, community and K12 schools, Aims is working to meet workforce needs in rapidly growing Weld County.

In a June 2014 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Weld County had the largest increase for employment in 2013, nationwide, at 6 percent as compared to the national average of 1.8 percent. Industries such as wind-turbine manufacturing to agriculture have kept Weld County in the top 10 percent in recent years, according to Upstate Economic Development. Agriculture accounts for $1.2 billion in sales in the county; Weld County also produces 85 percent of oil and gas in Colorado. This is good news for the Aims district as the college continues to imagine and implement specific programs to nurture success in the classroom and in life for diverse and ambitious students in the community.

Aims has partnered with local school districts to extend college into high schools through Academic Pathways, Career Academy and Early College High School. Through each of these programs, students can earn college credit or reach competency levels required for entrance into college.

Academic Pathways offers opportunities to students who have been historically underserved and underrepresented in higher education by enhancing the transition and access to postsecondary education through concurrent enrollment, Centennial BOCES alternative high school, GED testing, and the Intensive English Language program.

Through Career Academy, students can enroll in career and technical education courses designed for preparedness to enter the workforce and compete successfully in the job market. Students may choose from numerous certificate programs from entry-level, oneyear or less to two-year degree programs leading to immediate employment in a skilled and/or paraprofessional occupation.

Early College High School, through Greeley-Evans School District 6 and Windsor Charter Academy is a bold, new approach to free community college and college readiness.
