The Sons of the American Legion held their annual Holiday Christmas Breakfast to raise money for their scholarship program. 93 paying customers supported the event which was its usual biscuits and gravy (which, as always, was delicious) bacon and scrambled eggs with coffee and juice available. Thank you to the sons for what they do and our local citizens who support them.

by the citizens, several hundred at least. The largest town event I have seen. There was something for everyone. Many of the town organizations participated. The police provided smores and marshmallows for toasting, with three fire pits. The young people really enjoyed that and quite frankly, some older folks too. Hot Ham and Bean soup along with Hot Chili were provided from three huge caldrons with all the fixings.

It was great in the cool evening air. Hot chocolate was provided at the model church facility as well as a booth offering Christmas cookies. Inside the youngsters were offered the opportunity to do crafts and color.

Outside there was a train ride the young people and a hay wagon for all.

Christmas music was played through out the evening. Paul gave ongoing updates for Santa’s arrival. Live Christmas Caroling was provided by 5 students from UNC . Mayor Mac Leon lit the official Christmas Tree Lights. Soon after Santa arrived. The line for the young people to see Santa stretched for a while. Patient parents and grandparents waited with their children.

A great event requiring the support and cooperation of a lot of people.

Wiggins should be proud of its citizens both those helping put the event on as well as the many, many citizens that arrived to participate. Well done to the people of Wiggins. A lot of folks could learn from you!

A side note December 7th was the 78th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

It is good to remember the sacrifice so many made to help protect our freedom. Allowing us to celebrate the Holidays in peace. God Bless our veterans who served and our troops who serve now, protecting us at home! God Bless America.

by Bob Grand Well another year is rolling by. It is amazing how fast it seems to go. A time of year when people think a little bit more about others. A shame that is not the standard all year. But you have to deal with reality. Try and remember those less fortunate than you.

The latest on the Road Runner tales in Washington. There will probably be an impeachment vote this week. Looking back at comments that some Democrats made during President Clinton’s impeachment you have to wonder where the perspective is. There are many Democrats who would rather see a censure rather than a formal impeachment as they know where this is going in the Senate. The radical Democratic base and more importantly their donor base needs to be pacified, facts aside. We will see what this brings in the 2020 elections.

Meanwhile the President’s efforts continue to provide results. The stock market is up almost 10,000 points since he took office. Do you know how many pension funds are invested in the market, as there are not a lot of alternatives that can begin to meet their earnings projections, for example, PERA. The announcement of the first phase of the China trade agreement looks promising for our farmers. We have now become energy self-sufficient and with the new LNG facilities coming online out LNG exports will be growing. Our illegal southern border traffic has been significantly reduced. Looking back on the President’s campaign promises, whether you approve of him or not, his track record is good and getting better.

So, what about our Congress? It appears the House of Representatives will vote to approve the United States, Mexico and Canada Trade agreement. One has to ask with the tremendous amount of time focused on their long-stated goal of impeaching the President when will we get back to doing the people’s business. There are tough issues out there that require robust debate, healthcare, the national debt, immigration, changing work force, infrastructure, cyber security to name a few. Unfortunately, we are continuing to see a trend of further remoteness of elected officials and the people. The major political parties have, by virtue of not having term limits, we find that rather than the best and brightest we have party loyalist becoming in charge because of seniority. Nothing against the people of California and New York but do you believe that Jerry Nadler or Adam Schiff represent the best those states have to offer? So, what you have by default, is the staffs of these people being more responsible for creating substance. This aggravates the distance between the people and what goes on in government. This trend seems to be alive and well in Colorado. Be it the Capital in Denver, or the County, or even at some town levels. Listening to the people is uncomfortable for many politicians, as they are asked tough questions whose answers are even tougher. We need to figure how to get government back closer to the people, and just maybe we might have an improvement in government. Just maybe.

Watching Weld politics this next couple of months will be interesting. There appears to be a bit of a revolution in the Republican party with challenges to existing elected officials surfacing and challenges to the Republican Assembly process, which in theory represents a fair way to represent the County’s Republican population but which in reality is a method to control who gets nominated by the entrenched party apparatus. Looking forward to reporting on how this develops.

This Day in History - December 18, 1620 Mayflower Lands at Plymouth Harbor

On December 18, 1620, the British ship Mayflower lands at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, and its passengers prepared to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony.

The famous Mayflower story began in 1606, when a group of reform-minded Puritans in Nottinghamshire, England, founded their own church, separate from the state-sanctioned Church of England.

Accused of treason, they were forced to leave the country and settle in the more tolerant Netherlands.

After 12 years of struggling to adapt and make a decent living, the group sought financial backing from some London merchants to set up a colony in America. On September 6, 1620, 102 passengers–dubbed Pilgrims by William Bradford, a passenger who would become the first governor of Plymouth Colony– crowded on the Mayflower to begin the long, hard journey to a new life in the New World.

On November 11, 1620, the Mayflower anchored at what is now Provincetown Harbor, Cape Cod. Before going ashore, 41 male passengers–heads of families, single men and three male servants–signed the famous Mayflower Compact, agreeing to submit to a government chosen by common consent and to obey all laws made for the good of the colony. Over the next month, several small scouting groups were sent ashore to collect firewood and scout out a good place to build a settlement. Around December 10, one of these groups found a harbor they liked on the western side of Cape Cod Bay. They returned to the Mayflower to tell the other passengers, but bad weather prevented them from landing until December 18.

After exploring the region, the settlers chose a cleared area previously occupied by members of a local Native American tribe, the Wampanoag. The tribe had abandoned the village several years earlier, after an outbreak of European disease. That winter of 1620-1621 was brutal, as the Pilgrims struggled to build their settlement, find food and ward off sickness. By spring, 50 of the original 102 Mayflower passengers were dead. The remaining settlers made contact with returning members of the Wampanoag tribe and in March they signed a peace treaty with a tribal chief, Massasoit. Aided by the Wampanoag, especially the English-speaking Squanto, the Pilgrims were able to plant crops–especially corn and beans–that were vital to their survival. The Mayflower and its crew left Plymouth to return to England on April 5, 1621.

Over the next several decades, more and more settlers made the trek across the Atlantic to Plymouth, which gradually grew into a prosperous shipbuilding and fishing center. In 1691, Plymouth was incorporated into the new Massachusetts Bay Association, ending its history as an independent colony.

Christmas in Keenesburg was celebrated in downtown Keenesburg with a parade following. Local merchants participated; many had decorated their store fronts. Fortunately, the weather cooperated.
