Griego, who has been with the county for more than 43 years, was instrumental in selecting Ulrich as her deputy and implementing the department’s succession plan.

“This department is the most complex in the county,” said Kirkmeyer. “The numerous divisions, responsibilities, and funding sources require a leader who truly understands the day-to-day operations as well as the impacts of proposed state and federal legislation. We are happy to name Jamie Ulrich as the new director and are confident in Jamie’s ability to be that leader.”

Ulrich began working for the department in 1996, when she was hired as an eligibility technician for the Aid to Families with Dependent Children division. For the next 17 years, Ulrich gained more experience in the department through several divisions. In 2013, she took a position with the state DHS as the deputy director for the division of employment and benefits. She returned to Weld County in 2016, when she was hired as the department’s deputy director. Since that time, Griego has mentored Ulrich in preparation of this transition.

“I’m ready,” said Ulrich. “It’s been invaluable to have had the time to learn from Judy about what it takes to manage the many divisions, projects and programs in this department. I feel confident she has given me the foundation I need to be successful.”

As for Griego: “I’m excited to start my next chapter,” she said. “I’ve had a great career here in Weld County. I’ve worked with amazing commissioners and incredible staff. I feel confident the department is in capable hands with Jamie.”

CSU Animal Sciences Embarks on Program Improvement

Dept. head wants ‘pre-eminent’ program at state university

State University has embarked on a campaign to return its animal sciences department to the pre-eminence it once enjoyed. Dr. Keith Belk, the department’s director, outlined plans for the department Wednesday during the fifth annual Northeast Livestock Symposium in Fort Morgan.

Belt told the nearly 100 people attending the symposium that CSU faces some stiff challenges in achieving that goal, not the least of which is the almost complete lack of financial support from the State of Colorado for the state’s land-grant university. Belk said Colorado is now 48th in the nation in terms of funding it’s state university. When Belk took over the department in July, he said, he had 14 full-time equivalent faculty to teach 870 students and a morale problem among those faculty. Meanwhile, enrollment in the department has grown to 970 students. In addition, Belk said, the nature of the students has changed. This semester, he said, 80 percent of the students in his department are female, and students and faculty alike are constantly bombarded by negative messages about agriculture, and especially about livestock production. “The message we get is that agriculture is bad for our health, bad for the environment, we’re responsible for global climate change and just about every other bad thing in the world,” he said. “And all we want to do is teach out students how to feed people.” Still, Belk said he and Dr. James Pritchett, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences, have put together a program that will give students more practical instruction under the tutelage of a first-rate faculty. “We have begun the process of adding 10 new faculty, which will eventually give us about 35, which is comparable to the animal science department at Kansas State University,” Belk said. In addition, the department is seeking non-traditional students to go into animal production. “Our job is to help introduce people into the industry and do it sustainably,” he said. We need to create the next generation of livestock producers and introduce new blood into the industry.”

To do that, Belk said, CSU is recruiting urban students to study alongside the traditional rural students who have always attended the university. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re from Yuma, Colorado, or Los Angeles, if you want to be a cattle rancher, come to CSU and we’ll teach you how to be a cattle rancher,” he said. When asked about possible cultural differences between the students, Belk said he and his faculty constantly emphasize a one-team mind set. “Instead of making fun of that city kid because he doesn’t know how to (pregnancy) test a cow, get in there and show him how it’s done,” Belk said. “That’s how we establish relationships among these students.” Belk said he also wants students to have more hands-on experiences while at CSU so they can make mistakes that can be corrected while in school instead of making them in the real world. Students have to make decisions about the animals they’re raising and then see the consequences of those decisions while under faculty supervision. The program changes won’t happen overnight, Belk said, because he still has to build his “supply chain” of resources to equip the students.

“We’ll have to implement in baby steps, but we’ll get it done,” he said. The Northeast Livestock Symposium is presented by the Colorado Livestock Association.

This Day in History - December 4, 1991 Hostage Terry Anderson Freed in Lebanon

On this day in 1991, Islamic militants in Lebanon release kidnapped American journalist Terry Anderson after 2,454 days in captivity.

As chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, Anderson covered the long-running civil war in Lebanon (1975-1990). On March 16, 1985, he was kidnapped on a west Beirut street while leaving a tennis court. His captors took him to the southern suburbs of the city, where he was held prisoner in an underground dungeon for the next six-and-a-half years.

Anderson was one of 92 foreigners (including 17 Americans) abducted during Lebanon’s bitter civil war. The kidnappings were linked to Hezbollah, or the Party of God, a militant Shiite Muslim organization formed in 1982 in reaction to Israel’s military presence in Lebanon. They seized several Americans, including Anderson, soon after Kuwaiti courts jailed 17 Shiites found guilty of bombing the American and French embassies there in 1983. Hezbollah in Lebanon received financial and spiritual support from Iran, where prominent leaders praised the bombers and kidnappers for performing their duty to Islam.

U.S. relations with Iran–and with Syria, the other major foreign influence in Lebanon–showed signs of improving by 1990, when the civil war drew to a close, aided by Syria’s intervention on behalf of the Lebanese army. Eager to win favor from the U.S. in order to promote its own economic goals, Iran used its influence in Lebanon to engineer the release of nearly all the hostages over the course of 1991.

Anderson returned to the U.S. and was reunited with his family, including his daughter Suleme, born three months after his capture. In 1999, he sued the Iranian government for $100 million, accusing it of sponsoring his kidnappers; he received a multi-million dollar settlement.

Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission Announces Deputy Director Scott Cuthbertson to lead COGCC operations efforts

DENVER - The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) today announced that Scott Cuthbertson joined the division as Deputy Director of Operations. In his role, he will lead COGCC’s organizational operations, program and employee development.

“Scott’s extensive experience managing environmental and technical statewide programs will help the COGCC to align and improve our organizational resources and processes. These changes are crucial to our success as we implement our rulemakings,” said Director Jeff Robbins. “We welcome Scott and his background to focus on improving our internal best practices and employee development.”

Scott has a successful career in natural resources management, with nineteen years of service at the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, where he was most recently the Deputy State Engineer for Public Safety with the Division of Water Resources. In this role, he managed statewide dam safety, stream hydrography and water well metering inspection teams as well as a Denver based modeling and water information team. Prior to DNR, he had a groundwater consulting firm and was a former refinery process design engineer and environmental director for Conoco, Inc. Scott has many years of leadership and management skills and is known for his commitment to his teams and innovative leadership style. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and is a Registered Professional Engineer.

Hoyt Home Circle Club Meets

The Hoyt Home Circle met for a meeting at the Hoyt Community Center at 1:00 p.m. on November 13, 2019. The hostess was Ruth Anderson and Marilyn Musgrave filled in for Ruth. .President Marilyn started the meeting with welcoming everyone and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The club creed was led by Martha Allen. Ruth read “Friendship”. The roll call of wrapped Christmas gifts for seniors was answered by 10 members, honorary member Norma Lingo and special guest Brycen Musgrave. The gifts will be delivered to Valley View and The Beehive by Dorothy Kamanski, Elsie Naill and Ginger Lingo.

Barb Chilcote displayed the beautiful twin quilt which will be given away in a drawing along with the lovely queen-sized quilt and lap robe at the 2020 Hoyt Community Center Chili Supper scheduled for the last Sunday of February 2020. Tickets for the drawing for each quilt and the lap robe are being sold by all Hoyt Home Circle members for $1.00 each or six tickets for $5.00 and can also be purchased during the chili supper.

Marilyn reminded everyone of the annual Hoyt Community Center membership meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on November 14, 2019 at the Hoyt Community Center. If unable to attend everyone should contact President Steve Comer with opinions for 2020 improvement projects.

Two nominations were made for the club secretary for 2020 and Deb Mobley accepted the nomination.

The Christmas luncheon was discussed. Marilyn read the list of what food item or paper goods each member has signed up to bring. The luncheon will be held at noon on December 11, 2019 for members and their family members and guests. A meeting will be held following the luncheon and clean up. There will be an optional gift exchange and a Christmas card exchange. SA ornament exchange will be part of the roll call.. Those with secret sisters can bring an optional gift for their secret sister and will find out who their 2019 secret sister is. Members will sign up to be a secret sister for 2020 if they choose to participate.

The 50/50 drawing was won by Robin Sorensen and the hostess gift was won by Dorothy. The next meeting will be the Christmas luncheon scheduled for noon on December 11, 1019 at the Hoyt Community Center. Hostesses will be all Circle Club members. The roll call will be a silver offering and an ornament exchange.
