Wagoneers 4 H Club Annual Trick or Treat Street Event at Weld Central Junior High

The annual Wagoneers 4 H Trick or Treat Street Event was held at Weld Central Junior High School. Attendance and participation was, as usual, outstanding. This event has great community support from the Wagoneers 4 H Club, as well as Weld Central Student Government, school staff, teachers, friends and families of students. A big thank you to all the local businesses that supported the event with a special thanks to Cooksey Farms which provided pumpkins for all the young people that attended. This is a fine example of how America works best, cooperating and working together. Maybe next year we should invite our state, county, and local government leaders to see a real live example of how it can be done. A big thank you to all for providing an event that was appreciated by so many.

This year marked the 17th and final year of the Haunted House event at the American Legion Post 180 in Keenesburg, Colorado. The four Grand Witches of Keenesburg, Christie Grabian, Mickie Moser, Krista Pierce and Heide Robertson have announced their retirement. The project takes a lot of work and coordination and over the years has brought much delight to the attendees, even some shrieks to be honest. The Grand Witches have been helped by volunteers over the years and who for this year are pictured above. A big thanks to the Grand Witchs for all their time and hard work. Many generations have enjoyed it!

Women’s Wellness Connection Offers Free Mammograms

Weld County – Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Colorado among females, killing more than 600 women annually. But when breast cancer is detected early, 98 percent of those diagnosed had a five-year survival. Likewise, when cervical cancer is diagnosed early, 92 percent of women had a five-year survival. “Breast cancer screenings are critical for women over 50,” says Michelle Delgado, coordinator of the Women’s Wellness Connection Program at the Weld County Health Department. “Women’s Wellness Connection has made pap tests and mammograms accessible and free for all eligible women. Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October is the perfect time to get screened. Contact your doctor or Health Department today and schedule your screenings. They could save your life.”

The Women’s Wellness Connection urges women ages 40 years and older to talk with their healthcare providers during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month about screening for breast cancer. Women who can’t afford mammograms may be eligible for free screening. The Women’s Wellness Connection offers free breast and cervical cancer screening to low-income women aged 40 to 64 years through 34 community providers statewide. The Weld County Health Department screens eligible women in Weld County. The Weld County Health Department will be at Project Connect on October 18th at Island Grove Park from 12pm-5pm providing vouchers for free mammograms to qualifying clients.

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a good time to remind the women in our lives to get screened,” said Mark E. Wallace, MD, MPH, Executive Director of the Weld County Health Department. “We are proud to work with the Women’s Wellness Connection to offer free mammograms and pap tests to women who need them but can’t afford them.”

This Day in History - October 30, 1938 Welles Scares Nation

Orson Welles causes a nationwide panic with his broadcast of “War of the Worlds”—a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth.

Orson Welles was only 23 years old when his Mercury Theater company decided to update H.G. Wells’ 19th-century science fiction novel War of the Worlds for national radio. Despite his age, Welles had been in radio for several years, most notably as the voice of “The Shadow” in the hit mystery program of the same name. “War of the Worlds” was not planned as a radio hoax, and Welles had little idea of the havoc it would cause.

The show began on Sunday, October 30, at 8 p.m. A voice announced: “The Columbia Broadcasting System and its affiliated stations present Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater on the air in ‘War of the Worlds’ by H.G. Wells.”

Sunday evening in 1938 was prime-time in the golden age of radio, and millions of Americans had their radios turned on. But most of these Americans were listening to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy “Charlie McCarthy” on NBC and only turned to CBS at 8:12 p.m. after the comedy sketch ended and a little-known singer went on. By then, the story of the Martian invasion was well underway.

Welles introduced his radio play with a spoken introduction, followed by an announcer reading a weather report. Then, seemingly abandoning the storyline, the announcer took listeners to “the Meridian Room in the Hotel Park Plaza in downtown New York, where you will be entertained by the music of Ramon Raquello and his orchestra.” Putrid dance music played for some time, and then the scare began. An announcer broke in to report that “Professor Farrell of the Mount Jenning Observatory” had detected explosions on the planet Mars. Then the dance music came back on, followed by another interruption in which listeners were informed that a large meteor had crashed into a farmer’s field in Grovers Mills, New Jersey.

Soon, an announcer was at the crash site describing a Martian emerging from a large metallic cylinder. “Good heavens,” he declared, “something’s wriggling out of the shadow like a gray snake. Now here’s another and another one and another one. They look like tentacles to me … I can see the thing’s body now. It’s large, large as a bear. It glistens like wet leather. But that face, it… it … ladies and gentlemen, it’s indescribable.

I can hardly force myself to keep looking at it, it’s so awful. The eyes are black and gleam like a serpent. The mouth is kind of V-shaped with saliva dripping from its rimless lips that seem to quiver and pulsate.”

The Martians mounted walking war machines and fired “heat-ray” weapons at the puny humans gathered around the crash site. They annihilated a force of 7,000 National Guardsman, and after being attacked by artillery and bombers the Martians released a poisonous gas into the air. Soon “Martian cylinders” landed in Chicago and St. Louis. The radio play was extremely realistic, with Welles employing sophisticated sound effects and his actors doing an excellent job portraying terrified announcers and other characters. An announcer reported that widespread panic had broken out in the vicinity of the landing sites, with thousands desperately trying to flee. In fact, that was not far from the truth.

Highway Deaths are Down, but Pedestrian Fatalities Rose in 2018

Associated Press, 10/23/2019 Traffic deaths in the U.S. fell slightly in 2018 for the second straight year, the government’s road safety agency said Tuesday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration attributed the 2.4% drop partially to technology in newer vehicles that can prevent crashes. A total of 36,560 people died on the nation›s roads in last year, the latest full-year statistics available.

The agency said the downward trend is continuing into 2019. Firsthalf estimates show fatalities down 3.4%.

“This is encouraging news, but still far too many perished or were injured, and nearly all crashes are preventable, so much more work remains to be done to make America’s roads safer for everyone,” Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, whose department oversees NHTSA, said in a statement.

The overall declines in 2017 and 2018 came after two years of large increases blamed on people driving more as the economy improved.

But pedestrian deaths rose 3.4%, and the number of people killed on bicycles and other pedaled vehicles went up 6.3%. People killed in large-truck crashes rose just under 1%.

The agency reported 6,283 pedestrian deaths, the highest total in 28 years, according to Consumer Reports, which said pedestrian fatalities have risen about 53% since 2009.

NHTSA said alcohol-impaired fatalities dropped 3.6% in 2018, while fatalities attributed to speeding fell 5.7%. Motorcycle deaths declined 4.7%, the agency said.

Most of the pedestrian deaths, 76%, and half the bicyclist deaths occurred after dark, and the some pedestrians and cyclists had some alcohol in their systems. Seventy-four percent of the pedestrian deaths occurred outside of intersections, the agency reported.

NHTSA also said it would look into the increase in SUVs as a factor in the increases. SUVs sit taller than cars, which can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists.

The agency said in a statement that it’s also studying changes in its five-star crash assessment program and will consider including new technologies such as pedestrian detection systems. It’s also working with the Federal Highway Administration to reduce bicycle and pedestrian deaths.

“This is an epidemic of preventable deaths,” said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports. “We need to double down to figure out how to achieve better pedestrian detection and more widespread adoption.”

The agency said that the number of deaths in crashes with distracted drivers hit 2,841 in 2018, or 7.8% of total traffic deaths. But the 2018 number is down 12.4% from 2017, according to the agency.

The Truck Safety Coalition, an advocacy group, said crashes involving at least one large truck killed 4,951 people last year. In a statement, the group said fatalities involving large trucks have increased 46.5% in the past decade, yet the administration of President Donald Trump has pushed for proposals that would make it easier for truck drivers to work 17-hour days, and to remove a 30-minute break requirement for truck drivers after eight hours of work.

At the same time, the Transportation Department hasn’t done anything to advance safety rules that would require automatic emergency braking or electronic speed limiters for big rigs, the statement said.
