The BullBoar

lost the guide to where to find it

not a silly sausage

BULLBOAR sausages are a local delicacy. True story! Family recipes have been handed down through the generations from the early Swiss Italian settlers of the region. You’ll still find them in local butcher shops today, or if you’re keen to discover what makes a truly great Bullboar, you could always take a class during Harvest Week. Tuesday, April 30, Gary Thomas from Spade to Blade Catering will lead a very small class of sausage enthusiasts, (including Swiss Italian descendants) in a day of sausage making. Learn tips and tricks from treasured family recipes, (some hidden for over 50 years), to make fresh and curing varieties. You’ll even be able to take home a selection of your hard work to show off at the BBQ. The sausage session runs 10am – 3pm, and will be held at 57C Vincent St Daylesford. Cost $100. Book early, as numbers are limited. BYO sharp knife and apron. For more info and bookings call 0448 483 616.

Logistically Logical school holidays

LOGISTICS come into a whole new realm for families in the school holidays, the balance of kids, travel, child care, playdates, rellos, annual leave, (or lack of it) is the stuff logistic nightmares are made of. In this region we are lucky to have a school holiday program for primary school aged kids that is so good you’ll want to come along too… (sorry, you’re not allowed – it’s strictly kids-only stuff)! The nine day program includes excellent workshops, activities and presentations, including a horse riding and scavenger hunt day, a bike day at the skate park, outdoor mural painting, orienteering, making music videos, screen printing, mini golf and loads more. Each day begins at 56 Central Springs Road and goes from there. The minimum fee for each day is $25.05. There are government subsidies available. Call Julie or Anne Marie at Daylesford Community Child Care Centre for more info and bookings on 5348 3702.

Glenlyon

lost the guide to where to find it

music and magic

JUST A few ks out of Daylesford you’ll find the wee town of Glenlyon. The ancient trees of Barkly Street’s Avenue of Honour create a perfect tunnel of green, and this time of year the canopy brightens to gold, and at the right time of morning, when the sun is still low in the east, it shines though those golden leaves as they float from their branches making for a shimmering golden drive as you head out of town. Ahh, it’s pretty Glenlovely. Friday nights are pretty too… pretty spesh, if you head to The Glenlyon General Store. Each Friday night the store hosts free live music. Friday, April 5, Mana play a fusion of moody, soulful, gypsy tunes, and with a glass of something from the General Store’s impressive wine list, roaring open fires and friends all around, it’ll make you feel there’s magic in the air for the weekend ahead. Mana play 6-8pm. The General Store is at 63 Barkly Street. For more info call the store 5348 7922.

Food + Wine + Music

lost the guide to where to find it

= a perfect day out

ANDERSON’S Mill is a five storey bluestone flour mill, just down the road in Smeaton. It’s a pretty spesh building. Constructed in the 1860s, the mill was built when one decided to replace all that gold one had recently unearthed with wheat and grain. After almost 100 years, the mill closed its doors in 1957… (That’s a lot of bags of flour). In 1974 the grand old mill was one of the first buildings in Victoria to be included on the historic buildings register. See… it really is pretty awesome. Nineteen years ago the people of Smeaton decided their mill deserved a celebration in its honour and the Anderson’s Mill Festival was born. This unique annual festival will be held Sunday, April 7, and is a showcase for the region’s outstanding food, wine and music. Sample and purchase local delights such as fresh trout rolls, the tastiest bullboar sausages, organic burgers, with all manner of delicious tapinades and relishes to choose from. Indulge in home made icecream, and taste your way through stalls of the finest produce, breads, pastries, olive oils, sauces, cakes, biscuits and more. Local vineyards will be well represented as they bring their cellar doors to the mill. Try vintages from several boutique wineries, and handcrafted beers by Red Duck brewery. There will also be many makers and artists showing and selling their handcrafted wares. As always, the festival celebrates local live music with jazz, funk, folk and roots represented up on stage, as well as outstanding young musos from Ballarat High School. The mill’s ancient waterwheel will be rolling once again, and tours of the mill will be conducted throughout the day. There will also be a special kid’s entertainment area where the littlies can make wooden models, take a pony ride, and have a crack at gold panning (surely there’s something left in the creek? Get to it kids!) Entertainment takes to the stage at 10am and the day concludes at 4:30pm. Entry: $12 Adults, $5 kids, $8 seniors. Family tickets are $30. For more info go to: andersonsmillfest.org.au. 6

To Market to Market to buy a fat fig

IS IT too late to start our new year’s resolution? The one about eating healthy? Okay, okay, after Easter, we promise we’ll start. And a great place to start eating healthy is with a big empty basket slung over your arm, and a fist full of dollars at a farmers’ market. Oh and look! Here’s a fab one, just down the road. The Daylesford Farmers’ Market is held monthly (First Saturday of the month, this month it’s Saturday, April 6,) at Daylesford Primary School (Vincent Street). The market opens at 9am and runs for four hours. Each month local farmers and producers of home made deliciousness back up their utes laden with fresh picked vegies still grubby with earth, warm breads, luscious baked goods and treats, home made pickles, jams and preserves, local dairy products, organic goodies, and fruits just plucked from the tree. (Feeling healthier just reading about it). For more info call 0421 458 891.

Streaking

lost the guide to where to find it

out of daylight savings

THE SILVER Streak is a much loved Daylesford train. For the enthusiasts she’s a fully restored 1970’s diesel rail car, but to us, she’s shiny bright and better than the Melbourne food tram. Ahh yes. The Silver Streak is pretty spesh. Once a month she gets a run down through the Wombat Forest, from Daylesford Station to Musk, ferrying passengers there and back, prior to their dinner reservations in town. Departure is 5:30pm, and you’re invited aboard to enjoy live music, a glass of local wine, and appetisers as you roll along the tracks. (Returning to Daylesford Station by 7pm). This month the Silver Streak departs Saturday, April 6. This date is important to note as it is the last night of daylight savings, thereby your last chance to roll through the forest on a lilac dusk, before we wind our clocks back for winter. Cost $35 all inclusive. Bookings are essential check out: dscr.com.au/silverstreak or call 0421 780 100 for more info.

Autumn

damn you’re so prrrrdy TRENTHAM is a town that does autumn so very well. The well-loved autumn cliché of crunchy autumn leaves/designer gumboots/red wine/open fires/chunky knits/quiet fog and crisp see-your-breath-mornings is a daily reality here in Trentham town. Oh and how we love it. If you want to live a little of that idyllic autumn awesomeness, here’s one way to do it… Round up a few friends and head to the refurbished Cosmopolitan Hotel, (corner High Street and Cosmo Road), and park yourself in front of a fireplace, or outside in the gardens with a bottle of award winning local red wine. Sundays at the Cosmo, they host live music from 1pm. Sunday, April 7, Liz Frencham is bringing her guitar along for a few tunes in (hopefully) some of that pale autumn sunshine. Bring a scarf, bring your sunglasses, and relax away an idyllic autumn afternoon with leaves stuck to your boots. For more info call The Cosmo: 5424 1516.

Modern Day Attention Spans,

lost the guide to where to find it

…ooh look a birdie

THE REX Theatre stage (51 Vincent Street) is a perfect space for little bit of live theatre. And let’s face it, a little bit of live theatre is all the kids need. Being at The Rex, a live performance is made even better (as you get to sit in comfy cinema chairs), and being in Daylesford it’s better still, as the performance in question here, is local performer Anthony Verity, AKA: George the Conductor. ‘George’s Snappy Pantomimes for the Modern Day Attention Span’ is a fun family friendly show combining a series of two minute skits, comedy, slapstick, a bit of clowning around. Audiences from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to Hong Kong, (ages 4 – 90!) have loved it. The price is family friendly too, tickets are $7 for kids, and family tickets $25. George will be conducting his Snappy Pantos at 11am, each Sunday this month. Tickets available at the door or from Yang With Yin (within The Rex complex). Call 5348 1105 for more info.

Mud, Mud Glorious Mud

lost the guide to where to find it

and truly beautiful clay

BOY IT’S fun making mud pies. Oozing and squelching and smoothing and patting and sculpting. Some people never grow out of that mud pie stage. These folk are called Ceramicists. Their art is such that they get to play with cool malleable clay every day, and knead it, guide it, ease it into another beautiful form. In the Daylesford region there are many talented and gifted ceramic artists tucked away in their home studios, diligently working away at their precious blocks of slippery earth to create pieces of great natural beauty. Sometimes these artists hand dig the clay out of their own backyard to create a truly local end product. (See?! We weren’t kidding about the mud pies!) The ceramicists of the region have united to create a cooperative to support and inspire each other and share their knowledge. As well as a space to exhibit and sell their wares. This space is called Clayspace. And recently they have moved to new premises at Door 3 Gallery, East Street Daylesford. Clayspace Gallery Shop is open Saturday and Sunday 12pm – 5pm, and showcases the pieces created by our very talented local ceramic artisans. The pieces for sale are mostly functional, (think: cups, bowls, plates, teapots, platters and other tableware) and are all wonderfully tactile. When you pick these pieces up (careful now… it’s a concrete floor) they create a real sense of connection with the earth. Lovely stuff. Clayspace as a cooperative aims to nurture their members, and those new to the art, with regular meetings, sharing ideas, knowledge and resources and helps connect the public to this ancient art form. They plan on opening a collective studio later in the year, and host workshops, artist talks and feature a new artist each month at the Gallery Shop. If you are a ceramic artist and would like to become a Clayspace member, email: clayspacedaylesford@hotmail. com, or for more info on the artists, their work and events, hop onto their Facebook page: search for Clayspace Daylesford. 12

Create Your own destiny

SOMETIMES we’re a bit too busy to be creative. Sometimes we just don’t know where to start, what to do, and that blank canvas/lump of clay/box of pastels doesn’t exactly offer much in the way of creative advice. What you need, is to be immersed in inspiration and guided to discover your inner creative guru. Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) is offering a series of Creative Woman workshops, to ignite the creative spark, and immerse you in creative juices (don’t worry, you wear a smock). Journey through themes with music, guided imagery and visionary techniques to discover a bit more about yourself and explore your creativity in a safe, relaxing and fun space. (No previous art experience is necessary). Weekly sessions start Friday, April 12, (10:30am-12:30pm) and run for six weeks. Each session is $25. For more info and bookings phone Daylesford Neighbourhood House: 5348 3569.

There’s Something About maryland

HAVE YOU ever watched one of those food shows – where a kitchen ninja with crazy knife skillz chops up a whole fresh chook into 47 perfect pieces? Hmmph. So have we… and let’s just say… we ain’t no chicken ninja. (Pass the pre-cut stir-fry…) Ahh, but help is at hand for those wishing to gain the skill to portion up your own chicken, and learn how to use all the bits. Boy oh boy will this save you some bucks at the register if you can DIY your own drumettes. Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre (13 Camp Street) is hosting a Cheap Chicken session Saturday, April 13, 11am – 12:30pm. At the end of the course you’ll take home instructions, recipes, and two chickens cut into breast fillets, thigh fillets, wings and drumsticks. Vintage Engines

lost the guide to where to find it

pulling a crowd

SOME folks are mad about old engines. They love a rusty old bucket of bolts for the pure mechanics, the history, the grease and dirt, and can tell you (sometimes in excruciating detail) about the life and times of said bolts. In fact, if vintage engines had a Facebook page, they’d have more likers than grumpy cat. People are completely nuts about them. Mind you, those old time crazy contraptions are kinda awesome, in a wacky ye-olde kinda way. If you’re into that stuff head to John Powell Reserve, Guildford, Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, for the 17th Annual Vintage Engine Club Rally. See machinery from the good ol’ days, where necessity was the mother (father, and extended family) of invention. There’ll be loads of working models, displays, and beastly things belching lots of noise and fumes (hmmm also, not unlike the extended family). Open Saturday 10am–5pm, and Sunday 10am–3pm. For more information: 5476 2481.

Choo chooooo

lost the guide to where to find it

here comes the traaaain! ALL KIDS are mad about trains. This is not a generalisation, just a mere statement of fact. This sometimes completely obsessive behaviour is socially acceptable, even recognised as ‘cute’, in kids. The thing is, the older you get, the less ‘cute’ it is. And the only way you can fake your own nonchalance about locomotives is to have kids of your own so you can display faux interest in these monstrous marvels of mechanics. We all know the truth though. We all know adults never really grow out of their childhood steam train love, the noise, the power, the soot, the lingering smoke and ash in your hair, the thunderous rumble as the gargantuan black engine heaves and hauls weather-beaten wooden carriages down wonky old tracks. (Go on, admit it, it still gives you a thrill huh?) Well big kids, it’s time to load the little kids into the car and head to Maldon these school hols to re-live the thrill… The Victorian Goldfield’s Railway is holding two special Steam Trains for Kids days: Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14. It’s a brilliant day out. The steam train departs Maldon Station (Reef Street) at 10:30am, 12pm and 1:30pm both days and travels to Muckleford. Aside from the steam train rides there are trolley rides, diesel rides, an animal farm, other novelty fairground rides, horse cart rides, donkey rides, (yup, donkeys!) a sausage sizzle, model railway, and a clown on board just incase you aren’t having quite enough fun. It’s held on the last weekend of the school holidays, so really it’s your last chance to pretend like you had to take the kids along… (it’s ok, we wont tell anyone your little trainspotter secret). Tickets are $24 for adults, $14 for kinder and school kids, $3 for pre-kinder kids, or $75 for a family ticket. There are discounts if you book online at: vgr.com.au. For more information, including maps, head to the VGR website, or phone the Victorian Goldfields Railway on 5470 6658.

In for a Penny…

loving local live music PENNYWEIGHT are a local band with other lives. In the day time you can find these locals at school pick ups, in the queue at the supermarket, and doing the 9 to 5 (ish) like the rest of us mere mortals. But in their other muso lives, they somehow find the time to not only get together and jam, they also manage to pen award winning song lyrics, do festivals and now they’ve even recorded a debut CD: Keys & Change. This recording of 12 contemporary folk tunes tell tales tied to the land beneath our feet here in Central Victoria, as well as immigrant experiences, depression era Sydney, woven with rich stories of modern life and love. Pennyweight will launch the new album at the Old Hepburn Hotel, (236 Main Road) Sunday, April 14, from 1pm. Then you’ll probably see them in the self service aisle at the supermarket grabbing some stuff for dinner on the way home. As you were. For more info call the pub 5348 2207.

A Fungi Feast

delicious mushroom encounters

Have you ever wondered about the first person to pick a mushroom? Why did they think it would be a good idea to put it in their mouth?! Whoever it was, they were a genius!! And they were closely followed by another genius, who sautéed them in butter and herbs. The fungi kingdom is so bizarre. We are lucky to have a mushroom master in our midst. Alison Pouliot is a fungi expert, and she is hosting a series of fungi workshops, seminars, and expeditions to discover, identify and unravel the curiosities of the fungi kingdom. On Thursday, May 2, Alison will be hosting A Mushroom Encounter, workshop and feast at Ellender Estate Winery (260 Green Gully Rd, Glenlyon). The focus is on edible species and is followed by a sumptuous mushroom inspired three course lunch by chef Michael de Jong. The session runs from 10:30am-4pm. Cost $155. Bookings essential. as every good bakery should

THIS MONTH is Autism Awareness Month, and to help raise awareness, show support and raise vital funds, Country Cob Bakery (130-132 Mollison St, Kyneton) is hosting a good old-fashioned pie-eating competition. Saturday, April 20, at 10:30am, put your money where your mouth is, (but not before you shove in a pie) (or ten) and join in the fun. Country Cob has been baking the deliciousness for about 20 years, so they know how to whip up an award winning tasty pastry. Needless to say, it won’t be a problem to scoff loads of them to make some money for the Romsey Play Connect Playgroup. The playgroup supports families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. All money raised goes to Play Connect, do dig deep and eat big. To be involved (as an eater, a donator, a sponsor, or just to enjoy some of the baked goodness) find all the details on the Country Cob Bakery Facebook page, or call the shop: 5422 1801.

No Trash

lost the guide to where to find it

just local treasures OP SHOPS. They’re divisive. Either you’re a bit bonkers for bric-a-brac… or you’re not. If you fall into the former category, and you get that crazy rush of adrenalin at a whiff of mothballs or heart palpitations wondering what treasures lie beneath a pile of discarded pantyhose… then keep reading fellow op shopper… this story is for you. And if you’re not into second hand stuff, read on anyway, because it’s not really all about the mothballs… The Daylesford Community OpShop has been operating for 12 months. Initially set up as a project to engage and strengthen our little community, the OpShop has been a resounding success! This not-for-profit shop is entirely run by volunteers, and each month the store profits are gifted to a local community group needing a bit of extra cash. Each and every dollar raised stays in town. (Feelin’ the love yet?) This month they’re raising money for the Daylesford community after-school program to help buy a new computer and software. Doin’ it for the kids!! Yeah! This month ALSO sees the OpShop moving house! (Oh what a job to move an op shop… VOLUNTARILY! – aargh!) The new premises at 8 Mink Street (next to the car wash in East Street) are shiny bright, spacious and has access for all! (i.e.: no stairs!) If you can afford the time to help them move, the lovely vols (and community) would be ever so grateful. Pop in and pick up a pile of stuff at their current address (4 Albert Street), and drop it off. Easy. Or donate some decent stuff you don’t want any more… (We hear someone recently unearthed a pair of Manolos. FOR. REAL.) The Daylesford Community OpShop even takes electrical goods, furniture and mattresses. This month will be huge for this amazing bunch of community minded peeps, so if you can spare some stuff, some time, or a few bucks to buy a treasure or two, Daylesford says thanks! Mwah! The OpShop is open 10am–4pm Tuesday to Saturday. Just call into the store if you wish to help out, or for up to the minute happenings and store opening hours find them on Facebook.

Run the Rock and rock a PB

PERSONAL bests are there to be personally bettered. And if you’re one of those types who can’t function without smashing out a few Ks each day, you probably have a few PBs that you’d like to blow out of the water. The annual Run The Rock event (to be held Saturday, April 27,) is a chance to do just that. The course at Hanging Rock is run to support the Cancer Council of Victoria. Sure you might be circumnavigating a rare, six million year old volcanic feature, but don’t be overwhelmed, it’s really just a great chance to get out there and fill your lungs with some mighty fine, fresh air. There are four distances to choose from: 19km, 10km, a 5km walk/run and a 2km kids’ run. You’ll circle the rock, and do a lap of the racecourse, and there’s loads of space to catch up with friends and wind down for a picnic, BBQ, or catch your breath under a tree afterwards. For more info, or to enter the event go to starttofinish.com.au

Chocolate is for Life

not just for Easter

WITH EASTER behind us, perhaps chocolate season is over? PAH! What a ridiculous statement. Chocolate is always in season. And especially during the Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Week Festival. Commencing Friday, April 26, the festival launches in a most delicious way, with an indulgent chocolatier craft workshop. Macedon Ranges Chocolatier Cindy Crozier will lead you in this most decadent of workshops. You will taste, create and take home your chocolate creations. The five hour workshop, (uh-huh, FIVE hours… that’s a lot of time in a room full of chocolate), will educate you on the key elements of chocolatier craft (and you were thinking about taking up crochet… pfft.) The workshop will be held Friday, April 26 (and the following Friday as well) at Glenlyon Hall, 32 Barkly Street, 10am–3pm. Cost $120pp. Bookings are essential, phone: 0448 103 628 or for more info go to sweetcins.com.au.

It’s Harvest Time!

lost the guide to where to find it

hope you packed your appetite HARVEST celebrations are an ancient tradition. They hark back to an age when the success of a crop could dictate the future of a community. And even though we live in the modern era, farming success is still reliant on strong seasons and a bit of luck sent from the gods. In this region we still celebrate harvest with gusto, at the much anticipated (and extremely delicious) annual Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Week Festival. (Held from Friday, April 26, ‘til Sunday, May 5.) This celebration showcases the abundance of exceptional, delicious and diverse produce and world class wine that is grown in the region, and the farmers, provedores, chefs and winemakers responsible for our bounty. If you’re here during the two week festival, make sure you explore the roads less travelled, visiting farm gates along the way and take home just-picked produce straight from the farmer. Sample tasting plates at local cafes, experience outstanding fine dining created by award winning chefs, knock on cellar doors, meet passionate vignerons and hear the stories of their vines and taste the wine they so carefully create. Drop in at a farmers’ market and take home a boot-full of the finest produce in the country. Over the two week festival, many treasured local foodie haunts will be creating special harvest menus, hosting tours, masterclasses, competitions and workshops, covering topics as diverse as chocolate, bull boar sausages, and mushrooms! (Not at the same time we promise!) Everyone is invited to locals’ nights around the region, where special menus embrace the harvest. (Don’t worry, you don’t need to show ID!) Annie Smithers is creating a sumptuous classic French farmhouse feast, at her Trentham eatery du Fermier (42 High Street, Trentham). Indulge in three courses for dinner: Friday, April 26, Saturday, April 27, and May 2, 3 and 4. Cost: $44pp, from 6pm. Bookings essential: 5424 1634. For all the info on the Harvest Festival pick up a program around town or go to dmproduce.com.au

Pretty Ponies

A HORSE is a horse of course of course… unless it’s a miniature pony. From stockwork to riding to school, horses are a significant part of life in the country, and so every now and then we like to pop them up on a pedestal and say “hoorah for horsies.” The annual Feature Show at the Castlemaine Showgrounds (to be held Sunday, April 28) will feature magnificent Clydesdales (foals, fillies and mares) miniature ponies and horses, foundation classes and teeny little Shetlands that you’ll just want to pop into your pocket. Come and see the best of the best Clydesdales and the prettiest ponies vie for blue ribbons and a carrot or two. The show will be held at Camp Reserve, Forest Street, Castlemaine, 10am ‘til 3pm. Entry is $5 for adults, $2 for kids, (children under 6 free). For more info go to castlemaineshow.com.au or call 0413 339 058. 35

You look great DH,

lost the guide to where to find it

have you had work done? OVER THE last couple of months, locals have keenly watched a Daylesford icon with great interest. The magnificent Daylesford Hotel (at 2 Burke Square) has been undergoing something of a facelift. This old dame has been nipped and tucked by subtle and clever surgeons, (read: tradies) giving the old girl a fresh new face, a clean, unpretentious look minus the botox and scary body work. This clever and sensitive rejuvenation of this wonderful old building is now complete, and the iconic regional pub is now open, with the bistro, front bar, beer garden, and wine store already drawing (and pleasing) the crowds. The casual front bar offers loads of classics; like old school fishermans’ baskets and schnitzels… but done in that wow-this-isactually-totally-delicious-what-a-great-pub way. Inside the front bar the first thing that really impresses are those leadlight windows. We’re thinking the fairies waved a magic wand (or toothbrush) to clean those precious town treasures. It is worth stepping in to the bar itself just to marvel at how special they really are, (Hello… Stunning!) The wine store offers a fab list of quality local wines, and there are some ripper beers on tap. But what about the biggest balcony in town? What’s up the stairs these days? Well… they’ve built a new bar up there… Don’t be shy, wander up, order your favourite beverage and take in that view… and there it is… a little bit of Daylesford magic, right there. This month the Dining Room will open, which will focus on serving up great bistro classics, (no foam, no microherbs we promise), just a down to earth great pub menu tailored by new chef Dan Melbourne (previously of Annie Smithers’ Du Fermier in Trentham, and Innocent Bystander in Healesville). There’ll be matched wines, there’ll be heavenly cheese, there’ll be deliciousness. The Daylesford Hotel is open 7 days, 12pm ‘til late. Bar meals are available 12pm–9pm. For more info and dining room reservations call 5348 2335. Or find them on Facebook.

She’ll be Mangoes

THERE’S no denying it. As much as you want to cling onto your stone fruit, berries, and mangoes, the summer fruit season is well and truly over. But it’s not all grey skies in the fruit bowl, the very best of the apples have arrived. Is there anything better than the juice-bursting-crunch-explosion of a fresh picked Red Delicious in Autumn? Well is there?! (Um, rhetorical question, go with no). Autumn is the time to think apples, and if you want to grow your own, it’s not hard, but there are some good tips you need to know to get the most out of your tree. The passionate apple enthusiasts at Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) are holding an All About Apples workshop, Sunday, April 28, at 11am – 12:30pm. Learn the basics about planting, apple varieties, pruning and maximizing your crop. The workshop is $35 (or $25 for Diggers Club members). For more info and bookings call the St Erth Garden Shop on: 5368 6514.
