Coffee with milk

Doesn’t sound quite as posh

ONE may have noticed we, here at lost, like coffee. Okay, massive understatement. You see, folk around these parts take it for granted that in a town with a population of 2500 (Hello Daylesford) people, one can choose from 30 venues to partake in coffee nirvana. And, that one street alone (Hi Vincent Street) has 10 outlets to feed the caffeine fix. And that’s not mentioning the surrounding villages. We don’t want to take it for granted any longer. So, during lost’s coffee phase we pay tribute to the coffee bean in all its forms and this month we acknowledge (and take a wee bow to) the Caffè Latte or Café au Lait. It’s one of the most commonly ordered brews and simply means coffee and milk. Sounds so much better in French or Italian, no? Available at all good cafes where the coffee bean’s ground… dp

Perfect peace & perfect pieces

in Kyneton

DAYLESFORD’S Petrus Spronk is a man truly inspired by the beauty just beyond our back door here in Central Victoria; the evocative landscape, the ice felt in each breath, the vibrancy of light through forest gum tips and the pleasure gained when you actually see something for the first time. So inspired, Petrus has been busy in his studio, and is currently showing two exhibitions at the Stockroom (98 Piper Street, Kyneton). Black Moon-Light – A Ceramic Journey in Three Chapters illuminates Petrus’ respect for simple beauty in a series of exquisite handcrafted bowls and showcases his talent as one of Australia’s finest ceramicists. The quietness of clay, the stillness of wool, a meditation is a collaborative celebration of the tall vessel, with Petrus’ fine ceramic work shown alongside another awarded local artist Teresa Poletti Glover. Teresa’s work in vibrant woollen felt casts a striking juxtaposition between the artists’ contemporary interpretation of the ancient vessel. There will be a floor talk from the artists on Saturday, August 6, at 3pm. The exhibition is open until Sunday, August 14. Open: Monday, Thursday, Friday 10:30 till 5pm, Saturday & Sunday 10 till 6pm. Kathy Douglas 4

Kyneton Charcuterie French Feast DIY

THE clever chap behind the Piper Street Food Co (89b Piper Street, Kyneton) just got cleverer. Okay, we know it’s not a word, but he did! Damien Sandercock created the food company after years of being owner/chef at the fabulous Pizza Verde, and wanted a new challenge – cheff-ing without the nights. Oh, and take his Charcuterie to the masses. There in lies his speciality – cooking devoted to meat products, a very important French tradition. If you want to learn classic French techniques (let’s face it – who doesn’t?) The Piper Street Food Co are now teaching you ‘how’ in their Kitchen Classes. The French Farmhouse Feast class will be held on Saturday, August 6 from 10.30am till 1pm and then the best bit, you sit down and rest on your laurels whilst feasting on the fruits of your labour. On my mind

LET’S get this straight. Babba are not Abba. They are an Australian Abba tribute band. Babba were babies when the real Abba douze pointed Sweden to victory at Eurovision in 1974. But close your eyes at a Babba gig and you’re transported to a Swedish disco in the ‘70s complete with white capes, hair flicks, hotpants, flares and sideburns. Actually you don’t even need to close your eyes. Babba are SO GOOD at being Abba that they sell out international tours, and ja ja… Babba are coming to town. They’ll be rolling out the spandex jumpsuits and busting out the symmetrical dance moves at the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St Castlemaine) Friday, August 5, from 8pm. It’s music...

lost the guide to where to find it

Bear Grylls’ Style CONFISCATING yourself from the known world and hiding away in the middle of nowhere in the pursuit of creating great music seems to be all the rage nowadays. Even better if you survive and manage to make a record worth listening to. Jordie Lane has made it out of the Canadian desert alive and not only that, he has created an album tipped to take the Australian Music scene by storm. And, it’s no surprise considering he has been winning accolades with his music, heavily influenced by American blues and folk style, since the age of 14. His second and latest album ‘Blood Thinner’ features Kitchen utensils, wine glasses, boxes and banjo skins as instruments, a voice that could be the love-child of Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson. He plays the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Rd) on Sunday, August 14, at from 4pm. More info call: 5348 2207

Another feather in your DIY cap... Leadlight the way

EVER aspired to recreate the cathedral windows of Paris’ Notre Dame at your place? Well, even the workers who soldered those magnificent windows (early last millennium) had to start somewhere… Perhaps it was at a workshop in Daylesford where they learnt the ropes?? The demonstrations by Sandra Broman will be inspirational, educational, entertaining, and will showcase leadlighting skills first hand whilst working on a live window for the Sister George store. It’s all in the family A BEVY of locals and tourists alike have long flocked to these parts to see live music. This wee magazine was even founded (ten years ago next month!!) on the flush music schtick of the area – and need for the word to get around, of course. For the past eight of those years local band: Family Farm have been a major part of that scene. In fact, they’ve done over 2000 performances here both home and away. Founding duo Steve Douglas and Stacey Kilpatrick play a wide genre including: bluegrass, old-time, jazz, calypso, reggae, country, pop and rock and can be a duo, trio or full band. Talk about versatile. Family Farm perform at Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6, Howe St, Daylesford) on Saturday, August 6, 8.30pm. For a full run down of August gigs turn to page 46. dp

Canvasses, clocks & cocktail shakers

TINY Trentham likes to surprise… and the latest find is an eclectic gallery filled with elegant antiques and fine art from local artist, Mark Payne. The gallery is called The Artist’s Muse (32 High Street, Trentham). An apt description really. So, what does inspire an artist to create? It can be many things, the light at dusk, a lover, music, or the landscape…. Or it could be a mint condition Art Deco American Machinist era chrome cocktail shaker with a complete set of matching glasses in pristine etched ruby glass. Okay, sure... It’s probably that last one. Trentham artist Mark Payne finds inspiration for everyone at the gallery he shares with wife Cherie. Cherie is an avid lover and collector of unusual antiques, from the clean lines of Bauhaus to whimsical Art Nouveau, sophisticated Deco and bold Machinist era pieces. Mark’s vibrant, playful, romantic works on canvas dominate the space, and every other corner is filled with treasures from afar. Discover your own treasure and place a red sold sticker on it before someone else does! The Artist’s Muse Art & Euro Vintage Gallery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11am - 5pm. Owl Eyes in Hepburn!

OKAY, don’t get too excited bird nerds, owls are indeed excellent, just ask Nina from Offspring. Okay, confession time… we’re not actually talking about birds here at all. In fact, you can almost guarantee that there shall be none of the feathered variety at The Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) on Friday, August 19. (Apart from, perhaps, the stray boa). Instead, the supremely talented Owl Eyes and her band, shall don the stage, playing their magical indie wonderfulness, and oh yes, that includes ‘Raiders’. Owl Eyes plays The Palais as part of her Raiders EP tour. The tour takes her all over the country with her band, her beautiful voice, and her bow and arrow, (look up Raiders on YouTube… Poor ted). Fab local duo Leda and Caleb are supporting. Tix are $15, from: www.webtickets.com.au, info go to: www.thepalais.com.au. Kathy Douglas 18

ANOTHER of humankinds’ greatest inventions must certainly be the wheel… of Camembert. The wonderful white wheel is in the larder of the Gods, on the cheeseboard of kings, and often on the bench here at lost, relaxing to room temperature before we hoe in with knives and crunchy lavosh. Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (TNC) (High Street) is holding cheese making sessions, and this month experienced local cheese maker Lee-Anne Tisdale is demonstrating how to make traditional Camembert. On the day you’ll whip up your own delicious wheel to take home. Hurry up and book your place before the lost team get in first. MANY shops, cafes – even town halls and monuments will be painted Pink in August as part of the Hepburn Health Services’ Womens’ Working Groups SWISH/SWATs’ latest health campaign. The project entitled: Hepburn Shire Goes Pink For Women’s Health is to raise awareness of the importance of Breast and Cervical Screening. We wouldn’t want to bombard you with boring statistics, but these aren’t boring, they’re scary. So here goes: less than half of the eligible* women (in the Shire) have two yearly mammograms and pap testing is at only 62%. Well below the State average… *Free for all women over 50. Than a CWA thing

CREAM teas have long been a ‘country hospitality’ thing to do. It has been reported that the word scone was first recorded in 1513, and has been the star of tea parties at least since the 1900s. Whether it’s the scones, the delicate little sandwiches, or fine bone china, afternoon tea continues to retain its glamour status hundreds of years later. DEMI Louise’s music has been viewed over 11,000 times on YouTube, she’s performed as support act for Dan Kelly & Renee Geyer, done countless gigs throughout Bacchus Marsh, Daylesford, Ballarat & Trentham, and is only just old enough to buy her first drink at the bar. Not bad for a girl who only ‘picked up’ the guitar for the first time less than two years ago. From her very first appearance at a performance night in 2009, it was clear that Demi possesses a talent well beyond her young years. With a gentle guitar style and a voice like Norah Jones she performs laid back pop songs with a healthy dose of maturity mixed in with an endearing teenager vulnerability that makes it impossible not to love her. JUST as there are Cat and Dog people, there are also Tea and Coffee people. If you are a coffee person, the next couple of paragraphs are irrelevant to the way you caffeinate your life, so please feel free to look away. Ahhhh Tea. A truly great cup of tea should give you the same feeling you get when you arrive home after a long time away. It should whisk you away from all of your worries and allow you to exhale. It should insist that you relax on the very first sip, and put a smile on your face by the last. So what makes a great cup of tea? Well, there here are a few little tips to help you create that extra special cuppa this Winter: 1. Invest in some good quality, loose leaf tea and store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place 2. Use clean, fresh water for every pot (Daylesford natural spring water is perfect) 3. Brew in after-boiled water for three - five minutes. (If you brew the tea for too long it can become bitter) 4. When possible, drink from a fine English Bone China tea cup (it really does taste better) 5. Make sure kids are either at school, in bed (ideal,) or playing happily and safely far away from you… 6. Add a deep breath, some quiet time, a great mag, some milk, honey or sugar as desired If this all seems a little too hard, then for the perfect local brew be sure to pop into Ego’s Culinaria, (10 Howe Street, Daylesford) for their “Tea Of The Month”. The team will work their magic and all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy! Jodie Fergusson-Batte 30

CAN you hear that? The collective round of applause you can hear is the folk of Glenlyon rejoicing in the return of their hub: The Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street). General stores have always served as the focal point in rural areas. Not only do they stock the essentials in life, these days you’re sure to get a real coffee, and more than just milk, bread and the paper. And this general store is no different. Gourmet selection of pastries, foccacias and light meals are on the menu. Run out of sugar and the nearest neighbour is 20 klicks away? No sweat, the General Store is your man (woman and child). David, Tania and Ben Levens got tired of having to do the k’s, tired of hearing the complaint about the Store being closed and turned to action. How to prove this, we’re not yet sure, but, a great start is to sample the Original Guinness from a hand pull, which also according to Guinness law takes the proper recommended 199.53 seconds to pour and settle. Another good start would be to settle in for some good ol’ fashioned country hospitality and dining, Italian style. And, whilst there may not be much more than a sprinkling of houses and one (awesome) pub in Lyonville, The Radio Springs Hotel (Cnr High & Main Streets - where else?) may well have helped Lyonville reach its (self??) proclaimed status. Find out for yourself: Open Thursday Friday from 4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11am. More info: 5348 5562. Danni Petkovic 37

Dead Salesman do it better

lost the guide to where to find it

in Daylesford

LET’S just get this straight from the start. Don’t expect these guys to turn up ’Dead’ at your door offering you wares you have no desire to procure, (though to be fair they are approaching middle age) expect instead intense, unpretentious and well-crafted snippets of life from suburban living to love gone wrong. Formed in the frosty hollows of Ballarat-town in the late ‘80s the Dead Salesman are made up of the moody and Michael Stipe-esque vocals of Justin ‘Happy’ Hayward and Justin Ryda on acoustic guitar. From the very beginning it was clear that Happy Hayward’s strength lay in vocals and lyrics, and Ryda’s in the skilled accompaniment of his acoustic guitar. They were heavily influenced, by the early ‘90s rise of the Violent Femmes, and their music shows all the features of adolescent angst and worry, just minus the grunge. I have to say watching Happy (who on stage is anything but,) Hayward perform is simply spellbinding, he’s far from animated, you’ll find no slickness about him, just a vulnerable looking man hunched awkwardly over a too-tall microphone sprouting honest, sometimes angry yet always well thought out lyrics. The Dead Salesmen Duo perform with support from the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Freya Hollick on Sunday, August 7, at Horvat’s Wine Bar, Howe Street Daylesford, from 6.30pm. Nel Staite 38

Old Plants and more! It’s BudaFest ’11!

39

lost the guide to where to find it

BUDA Historic Home and Garden (2 Hunter Street, Castlemaine) is a grand gold rush era property in Castlemaine, with a pretty schmick garden to boot. Yes, it’s an historic building… so, here comes the history lesson… The Leviny family lived at Buda for 118 years. They were mad keen gardeners and two generations of green thumbed Levinys lovingly tended the grounds. No hasty backyard blitz here, they put so much care into the garden that many of the plants growing today are original plantings from the 1860s. BudaFest is held each year to help raise funds for Buda House and Garden. This year’s program reads like a who’s who from Jamie Durie’s black book of horticultural heroes. The weekend is packed with garden rambles, workshops, discussions and displays, lectures and lunches, and a gala dinner. Over 30 garden gurus are on the program this year, hosting presentations on everything from Botanic gardens to Bonsai for beginners. BudaFest ’11, Gardeners Growing Communities: Friday, August 26 to Sunday, August 28, at venues around Castlemaine, including Buda Historic Home & Garden, Bookings essential. For info and bookings call 5410 1060. The full program is at www.budacastlemaine.org

We’re in Trentham anymore

PICTURE this. You’re at breakfast. It’s Sunday morn, not too early (it is Sunday). You’re desperate to try out the new café that has just opened its doors. You’re in your Sunday best (read: farm jeans, gumboots, beanie). It is the country. And winter. You drag your dishevelled self through the doors and into… chic land. There is not another muddy grubby farm looking being in sight. You are seated with coffee order in place. Menu is placed on white linen table clothed table. As you order breakfast a swift linen napkin is on your lap. Wow, you’re thinking. “did we transfer from Trentham to Paris?” Brekkie with real linen? Enter – the new café in Trentham town, Colliban Foodstore (18 Market Street). It’s pretty swisho and down right delicious. You’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re in France as you order a Croque Monsieur and gaze at the rows of food stuffs reminiscent of a European Deli. You notice that alongside the Euro delights are local wares and feel mighty proud of this part of the world. Quite a few other locals in their ‘Sunday best’ have shuffled in by this stage. It’s okay you’ve managed to blend in. Ah, another delight to add to the region. You’ve gotta love the countryside, where glam and gardening garb go hand in (gloved) hand. The Colliban Foodstore is open daily from 9am. From August 19, the cafe will be open for breakfast: Sat-Sun, lunch: Fri-Mon and dinner: Fri-Sat, with locals night every Friday. Info: 5424 1774. 40

And wombats may fly

THE much talked about café perched high on Wombat Hill Gardens has opened its doors. Wombat Hill House (Central Springs Road, Daylesford) is set within 10 hectares of stunning Botanic Gardens overlooking Daylesford. The former caretaker’s residence – an original 1940’s cottage has had a makeover. It now boasts a cosy licensed cafe serving seasonal food sourced locally and there is even kitchen garden courtyard (don’t get much more local than that!). It is the chef-d’œuvre of Alla, Alan, Larissa Wolf Tasker and team and is very much the hidden enchanted nook in the gardens where one might just see a wombat with wings. Open from 8.30am for breakfast and lunch from Thursday to Monday. They also stock pantry provisions, picnic food stuffs and take home meals. Words In Winter

BABY it’s cold outside…(well you are here in August)... Which means it’s also the best time to cosy up in front of the fire with a fantastic local Pinot, and a good book. Each Winter the region celebrates cosying-up-with-a-good -book at the Words In Winter festival. (August 4 – 28). Words in Winter (now in its tenth year) is an annual bibliophile feast, and lovers of words, prose, chapters, lyrics and verse come en masse to the area to immerse themselves in the written word. This year you can sign up for writing workshops, meet authors, buy books and take in readings from some of Australia’s favourite writers and poets. Poets Andy Jackson and EA Gleeson are hosting readings, as well as authors John Marsden, Ken Haley and Jenny Davies. Sing along with vocalists Fay White and Jane Thompson, and discuss the origins of certain ‘4 letter words’ with superlinguist Kate Burridge. If you fancy a bit of costume, the Book Ball is a Words In Winter highlight. Saturday, August 6, at Daylesford Town Hall. Dress as a character from a favourite book, or as your fabulous self from your own autobiography. Tickets are $25 & bookings are essential. For more info and to book phone 5348 1625. The Magic Lantern and Music Show returns this year, this incredible exhibit from an era prior to plasmas and pixels is fascinating. Presentations will take place in Clunes, Daylesford and Maryborough. Words in Winter runs from Thursday, August 4, til Sunday, August 28. Festival events will be held in many towns throughout the region. For more info and the full program of events go to www. daylesfordonline.com/wordsinwinter Kathy Douglas 44

Performance Anxiety

A novel approach to writing. SIX hours, several writers, and several hundred coffees. That’s all it takes to produce and perform a brilliant piece of writing, at the annual Performance Novella, held during Words in Winter. The deal is, a team of writers take turns to each write a chapter of a Novella. At the end of their designated hour, they read their chapter aloud, then hand the book on to the next writer, and where they take the story is up to them… it’s a page turner, it’s a thriller, and absolutely no one knows how it will end. Join the writers hourly for their readings, or settle in for the day over coffees or lunch. The Performance Novella takes place Saturday, August 6, at the Book Barn, Lake Daylesford 10am – 4pm. Free entry. kd

Scrabble Fest

YOU know who you are… You’ve got ‘25 Words With Friends‘ games going on, you know your double word score from your double letter, and the sound of those little cream tiles tipping out of the box makes you quiver with delight. Ooh, Quiver – imagine that on a triple word score… Have to be worth at least 54 points! (*squeal!*)…Ahh, I digress. If you’re an unabashed Scrabbler, get your eyes in the dictionary. Words in Winter is running a series of Scrabble games as part of the Australian Scrabble Players’ Association, Victorian Country Championships, and absolutely anyone of any age or skill level is invited to Scrabble it up with the best of them. Saturday, August 6, 10am til 4pm, at Daylesford Bowling Club, 8 Camp Street Daylesford, and it’s F.R.E.E. (7 points).
