Move Over Myer Music Bowl the Trentham carols are here

RIGHT about now you’re probably patting yourself on the back for untangling the Christmas lights last year. (Commiserations if you just stuffed them into a box. And… um, good luck with that.) Yes, Christmas is upon us, and Friday, December 2, Trentham is kicking off the Christmas Celebrations with their annual Christmas Carols in the Park. Come along from 6:30pm for hot food, the carols and concert will start at 7:30pm. Bring a picnic blanket or chairs, and a picnic and celebrate the season with friends. Local performers and the primary school choir will be singing up a storm. There’ll be a bumper raffle, free LED candles and maybe even a visit from the big bloke in the red suit. It’s always a gorgeous night for the whole community. Trentham’s Christmas Carols in the Park will be held at Quarry Street Reserve, in High Street Trentham. For more info call 5424 8291.

the Highlanders are gathering

2

OCH aye! It’s that time of year again. Saturday, December 3, expect to wake in Daylesford to the nostalgic sound of the pipers piping and the drummers drumming, as the highlanders gather in Daylesford. This much-loved day in the Central Highlands brings together Scottish clans from all over Victoria celebrating their family heritage. The Highland Gathering begins on Vincent Street with a rousing Pipe and Drums parade marching up the street. Once the parade is over, head up to Victoria Park for the official gathering. There’ll be clan stalls, food and drink, Highland pipe bands, Highland dancing, Scottish craft and a million kilts. And the spectacular highlight of the day, the grand massed band parade. This is something to behold, when the pipe bands combine in formation the hair will stand up on the back of your neck. It’s been said to move people to tears. Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens

lost the guide to where to find it

quite literally the coolest place in town

4

THE best place to be on a hot-as-chips summer day is under a shady tree. As soon as the mercury creeps over 30 degrees the place to be in Daylesford is up at Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. The Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens were planned and planted atop Wombat Hill in the late 1800s, and some of these magnificent early trees are still standing today. The gardens are lovingly tended by the Friends of Wombat Hill. This year these incredibly gifted and green thumbed volunteers have been very busy little bees, and have been pruning, weeding and planting like crazy, putting over 10,000 new bulbs in the ground, 300 hellebores and 25 new tree peonies. The garden is looking STUNNING as you can imagine! On a hot day the temperature under a magnificent leafy canopy is significantly less than on the sweaty streets below. It’s a treat to lie in the shade under one of these giant trees on a picnic blanket and listen to the birds and bugs above. Whilst you’re up on the hill pop into Wombat Hill House Café. There are soooo many amazing treats to take with you into the gardens – or stay for a late brekky or lunch and escape the heat inside. The Friends of Wombat Hill are having an end of year clearance sale on plants up at the little shed next to the café Saturday, December 3. (9am – 1pm). Learn more about the great work they do in the garden and find out how you can help out, or bring along a hat and gloves and get in there yourself. They’ll be asking for help on the day to do a bit of weeding after those late spring rains. – Then you’ll really enjoy lying in the shade of a giant afterwards. Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens in on top of Wombat Hill, Daylesford. Enter via Central Springs Road. For more info. about the gardens and the friends of Wombat Hill go to wombathill.org.au or like Friends of Wombat Hill on Facebook.

All I Want For Christmas

is 500 sexy Santas

8

LAST year some clever little local Christmas elves took it upon themselves to raise some money for some favourite charities. Sure, they could’ve shaken a tin, or cooked a sausage sizzle, but no…. These lovely little elves concocted a plan so fun, so crazy, so hilarious… and successful… that they’ve decided to do it again! The Sexy Santa Pub Crawl is happening through Daylesford Sunday, December 4. Sign up, dress up and drink up for a few great causes. This year Daylesford’s Sexy Santas are raising much-needed funds for the RSPCA, Living Positive Victoria, the CFA, Christmas Cheer Daylesford and Daylesford’s ChillOut Festival. The Santas will congregate at Vincent Street, Daylesford, from 1pm (meeting out the front of Hocking Stuart Real Estate) and from 2pm they’ll then run/skip/walk/crawl to four pubs (The Daylesford Hotel, Perfect Drop, The Farmers Arms, and The Old Hepburn Hotel) jingling their bells all the way. If you’re thinking about getting involved (go on… you know you want to) costumes can be as Christmas cray-cray as you like – think sequins, lycra, fur, tutus, wigs, Rudolph noses, antlers, fluffy Santa hats and funny stuff. It’s all for a good cause! (Local tip: That Bargain Place at 68 Vincent Street has your crazy Christmas costumes sorted!) Tickets are available at Eventbrite.com.au (Search Daylesford, it will pop up.) Entry (online) is $33 per Santa, or $45 on the day. (This includes 4 beers or softies at the pubs.) This year they’re hoping for around 500 Santas to participate – so don’t be a Grinch - dress up in your best Sexy Santa gear and get involved! For more information including registration search: Sexy Santa Pub Crawl 2016 on Facebook.

BY the time Saturday, December 17, rolls around you’ll probably be feeling like you need a little break from all the Christmasness. Horvat’s Supper Club in Daylesford has just the remedy. Pugsley Buzzard recorded his 2013 release Chasin’ Aces in New Orleans and his music oozes the vibe, the energy and the soul of that city, without a jingle bell in sight. Pugsley Buzzard will hit the stage from 7pm-10pm. Entry is free. For more info go to facebook.com/Horvats. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Not a Very Silent Night in Malmsbury

WE were all a bit bah humbug when the Christmas carol muzak started pumping out of elevators and shopping centres in October… but now that we’re sitting fairly in the middle of the silly season we are loudly Silent Night-ing and Oh Come all Ye Faithful-ing with the best of them. This year you’ll hear carolers pop up all over the place, and we have it on good authority that the carols at Malmsbury Primary School will be extra special. Sunday, December 18, brush up on your carol lyrics and head to the little school at 38 Cameron Street, Malmsbury from 6-7pm. The school kids and teachers, as well as local musos will perform. This is a free event for all, and we heard a rumour that Santa might even be paying a visit! Exciting! Bring a picnic blanket, and your singing voices! (No dogs or alcohol allowed on school grounds.) For more info call the school 5423 2284.

LAKE Daylesford is out-of-control pretty. With ancient trees dipping their toes in the water, sweet little bridges, and oh soooo cuuute baby duckies splashing around, it is so well loved (and heavily instagrammed) by locals and visitors alike. Now that the sun’s out, it’s time to get back down to the lake and enjoy its beauty (and those cute baby ducks) as many have done so for generations. The Lake Daylesford Pedal Pushers boat hire has recently opened down on the lake behind the Boat House Cafe. Hire a pedal boat (for one, two or three people) from $20 per half hour. A cruise around our lovely cool lake is the perfect thing to do on a hot summer day. (Make sure you follow it up with an icy drink afterwards from Boathouse Café. Nice.) NO pressure December 31… but we’ve come to expect a lot from you… the expectation of the party to end all parties, the obligatory reflection on the year that was, the expectation of the new, and the promise of a pash at midnight. No pressure NYE but YOU’D BETTER DELIVER! If all this expectation leaves you feeling like you’d prefer to crawl under a rock it’s ok. There are options other than fireworks and random pashes. Each year the Yoga Ashram at Rocklyn (393 Dean-Barkstead Road) hosts a New Year Retreat. The retreat focuses on cultivating a joyous mind, and entering the new year with mindfulness, intention, peace and joyfulness. The retreat can be taken as a full three day retreat from Thursday, December 29, - Sunday, January 1, or as shorter retreats from Friday, December 30, – Sunday, January 1, or just an overnighter on New Years Eve. There’s even an option to just come for the evening on New Year’s Eve from 3:30pm – 1am New Year’s Day. This retreat will follow a yoga program of postures, balancing the body with pranayama, relaxation with yoga nidra, and observing the mind more artfully in meditation. Participants will come together for a yagya, chanting and a havan, all connecting with the same beautiful intent. The outcome of the retreat will be a newly focused mind, contentment and an intention to experience joy into the new year. To bring the new year in with a positive focus and intention is empowering and inspiring. And you’ll wake up on New Year’s Day feeling energised and ready to make 2017 yours. The cost for the retreat varies depending how long you stay, but starts at $65 for New Year’s Eve only (no accommodation). For all the information, what to bring and to book your place, go to yogavic.org.au or call the ashram on 5345 7434.

Bikes and Utes and Coconuts! HAVE you ever marched in a parade? Have you proudly walked alongside adoring crowds, cheering and clapping, waving and smiling at you? Being in a parade is seriously joyous. Each year Daylesford hosts a very special New Year’s Eve Parade and Gala for families of the town. Absolutely everyone is welcome to join in, to be part of the parade, to create a float, to dress up and march, cartwheel, ride or strut down Vincent Street as a celebration of 2016 and the year to come. (And of course those not participating are invited to come along to watch the spectacle and to cheer on and wave to everyone in the parade!) Each year, local kids are invited to decorate their bikes to ride in the parade. The pushies are wrapped in tinsel and foil and teddies and cardboard, they look amazing! – There are prizes for best girl’s bike and best boy’s bike. Families, friends and individuals are invited to create a float (it can be a decorated vehicle or a walking float) – choose a theme, decorate your car, ute, or motorbike, dress up, play a tune, go bananas! It’s New Year’s Eve after all! Each year the floats get bigger and better! It’s an awesome sight! There are loads of prizes, and the best float takes home $500! (A totally awesome way to start the new year!) The New Year’s Eve Parade and Gala will kick off on Vincent Street from 6:30pm, with live music and food and some good old-fashioned kids’ games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Quoits, Coconut Shy and more! The street parade begins at 8pm. For more information on how to get involved this year email Anne at anneestewart.com.au or Cath at cathy_d_cat@ hotmail.com. Nearly 160 Years

IN AN age of swiping, scrolling, scanning and tapping, it’s nice to know there are some great old-fashioned traditions still standing strong. The Glenlyon Mixed Sports Day is one such age-old tradition, and the only swipe right you’ll see on the day is when someone shoos away a fly. The Mixed Sports Day is held each and every New Year’s Day down at Glenlyon Reserve, and it’s a brilliant family day out for all… and has been since 1857! Come along to witness the best in good old country fun. One of the days’ highlights is the famous wood chop. This event draws fiercely competitive wood choppers from all over Australia. They come strolling into town in their old blue singlets with their big sharp axes slung over their shoulders all for the glory of chopping a chunky log in half. The resultant hand-chopped wood is then auctioned for firewood. Other exciting events on the program include the Men’s and Women’s World Bull Boar (sausage) Eating Competitions. (Arrive sans-breakfast if you’re going to enter these comps!) There’s also the mineral water guzzling comp, (just drink a litre of Glenlyon’s finest mineral water in the fastest time to win)! There are prizes and trophies (and no doubt tummy aches) to be won! There are cash prizes for the classic ladies’ gumboot throw, and the nail driving comp. There are foot races for the kids and loads of fun for all! They don’t call this event the ‘mixed’ sports day for nothin’ … another big drawcard of the day are the equestrian events including show jumping and novelty horse events. Including the Glenlyon Cup run over 1200 dusty metres. There’s lots of food and drink available and plenty of fun for all. Bring a picnic and sit under the shade of the magnificent 100+ year old oak trees and welcome in the new year in a great fun way with friends old and new. A Sparkling Start to 2017

See-ya later 2016! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. No matter how this year has treated you, New Year’s Eve is a fantastic time to pause and reflect on what has been, and what will be in the new year. To celebrate the good stuff, commiserate the bad stuff and welcome the fresh, shiny, new blank canvas ahead. If you want to celebrate in fine style… Daylesford’s Lake House is where you need to be. Lake House is hosting a New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner and Fireworks from 7:45pm on Saturday, December 31st. It promises to be a very special party. This annual event helps raise funds for the CFA and is possibly the most elegant way to do so. The evening starts with Champagne as the sun sets on the year, and is followed by an incredible Lake House feast, and later watch fireworks explode and sparkle over Lake Daylesford. Soooo stunning. Cost: $395. Dress: Formal. For more info and bookings call Lake House 5348 3329.

Bushwalking

HERE in Daylesford/Hepburn Springs we are surrounded by forest, including the beautiful Wombat State Forest and the Hepburn Regional Park. If you stand on top of a hill you can see the bush in all directions. This land is criss-crossed with walking tracks and trails including the well known Goldfields Track, (part of the Great Dividing Trail), but few know of the other great off road bushwalking tracks around here, and there are plenty of them. They’re well established and perfect for serious hikes or leisurely bushwalks, as running trails, mountain bike trails or just as an interesting alternative to pounding the pavement. Spa County Explorer is an initiative of serious map lovers the Eureka Orienteers and Map Sport Cartographic. They have created a series of adventurer trail maps including some of this local area: The Spa Country Explorers Adventurer Series. Created by passionate local bushwalkers this series of maps is extremely detailed for our region. The new maps include contours, vehicle access points, and tracks classified by width and ease of use. The ‘Local Series’ includes a new Daylesford-Hepburn Village Link trail map. Yes! You can bushwalk between Daylesford and Hepburn Springs! (Did you know that!?) There are loads of tracks to get you there! And the Jubilee Lake Trail, catering for walkers, off-road and on-road cyclists. These maps are free and downloadable from the Spa Country Explorer Website. Also available is the highly detailed Wombat Station Adventurer map. (A fantastic section of bush south-west of Daylesford.) You can buy this map online, or pick it up for $10 from the Daylesford Tourist Information Centre. This map is $10. (It’s made out of special stuff that won’t get wrecked if it gets wet. Genius!) Summertime’s

LAVANDULA is a seriously stunning little farm just out of Hepburn Springs at Shepherd’s Flat. The original stone farmhouse was built in the 1850s, and has been lovingly restored, now boasting beautiful grounds and an envy inducing vegie and herb garden - which grows the produce for the onsite café la Trattoria. As you might’ve guessed Lavandula is named after its magnificent, famed lavender. And right now the purple fields of fragrant lavender are ready for harvest. Sunday, January 8, is the Lavender Harvest Festival at Lavandula. This sweet celebration of the harvest is a must-do on your summer holidays calendar. Watch as the flowers are harvested in the field, learn about the distilling process and how they create their precious essential oil. Hundreds of bunches will hang beneath the verandah, filling the air with that wonderful fragrance, and you’ll be able to buy beautiful bunches of fresh lavender on the day as well. The lavender is harvested for Lavandula’s own body lotions and creams, room mists and essential oils, and they’ll all be available to purchase on the day. You’re guaranteed to walk out smelling divine! A harvest festival is a wonderful celebration with food, and music and dancing, so expect delicious treats like woodfired pizza, live music and performers, and the Brandragon Morris Dancers kicking up their heels. There will be a number of stallholders selling local wares and produce, and the old stone farmhouse will be open for tours. Bring a picnic blanket and find a shady spot under a tree or just wander the beautiful grounds soaking in all the gorgeousness. It’s a perfect day out in the country. Entry is $6 adults, $2 school aged kids. Dogs are welcome (on a lead). Lavandula is at 350 Hepburn-Newstead Road Shepherd’s Flat, (just 10 minutes north of Daylesford). Gates open at 10am. IF you have a thing for old stuff… (think vintage, retro, antiques and other such pre-loved awesomeness) then you might just need to take a seat for a moment as we explain something of great importance to you. Just north of here, between Daylesford and Castlemaine, there’s a tiny old gold mining settlement in the bush called Fryerstown. Not a whole lot happens in Fryerstown. It’s dusty and quiet, and dotted with historic buildings and hints of a gold rush from days gone by… But something magnificent happens each January that brings thousands of people to the tiny town in search of a new type of treasure… The annual Fryerstown Antique Fair is an absolute treasure trove of incredible antiques, collectables, retro treasures and vintage wonders, and if you’re into that type of stuff, this is a MUST DO event! This year, the Fryerstown Antique Fair will be held Friday, January 27, – Sunday, January 29. The fair is held in and around the old hall of the Burke and Wills Mechanics institute. (Just follow the signs - and the crowds!) The paddocks around the hall are chockablock with second hand dealers from all over Australia. This fair is possibly the biggest one of its kind in the country, and you’ll find all manner of treasures available to purchase. Expect: Australiana, old linen, depression glass, furniture, retro lighting, art glass, homewares, machinery, things for your walls, rusty things, bric and brac, kids’ stuff, and things you remember from your dear old nana’s house. Adult admission is $6, kids under 12 are free. There is no bank in Fryerstown so bring cash. Food and drinks are available, and there’s loads of free parking. (Watch for kangaroos on the roads in the area, there are plenty about.) Bring a hat and sunscreen. Don’t wear fancy shoes (it’s dusty if dry, and muddy if wet). The fair will be open Friday 7am – 5pm, Saturday 7am-5pm, and Sunday 9am-3pm. For all the info including maps and
