Muesli & Coffee a love story

WE HERE at lost love a good story, a great love story - even better, a great local love story - better still. Throw in a coffee and we’re in heaven. When we came across local lass: Julia Predavec and her motto of ‘love your local food’ – we had to delve deeper. Julia runs a boutique hamper and distribution company selling and sending all yummy things local, far and wide. Including, of course, the best locally roasted beans from Coffee Basics. The latest addition to the hampers of local loveliness is her very own Farmhouse Muesli. Enter the love story, it started in a small remote hilltop village in Eastern Europe (don’t they all?), with her grandmother soaking the breakfast oats in the morning’s milk (fresh from the cow) and mixing it with left over strudel mix. The result - years of recipes handed down the generations, now made right here is Daylesford town. And, using the finest natural and local ingredients, eight varieties of scrumptious local fresh muesli are now available at Cliffys Emporium, Ego’s Culinaria and Bocconcini European Deli. All three cafes coincidentally (...or not) make excellent coffee. More details: info@klika.net.au. dp

Highlanders gather &

lost the guide to where to find it

Bring in the heavies...

THE Daylesford Highland Gathering is on again, it’s their 60th annual gathering, and if you hadn’t read about it, you’ll sure hear them when they arrive. Saturday December 3, the day kicks off with bagpipes and a street parade of 22 bands (no less!) along Vincent street, at 9.30am, the day continues up at the road at Victoria Park (Daylesford-Ballan Road), with Justice Teague as Chieftain for day. There’ll be cabor tossing (read: throwing of a really big pole, kind of like an electricity pole – hopefully minus the electricity) throwing of the Scottish hammer (sounds heavy) or putting of a stone. And finally, weight throwing - kind of like discus…only, you guessed it, much heavier. (We’ve been told it’s the equivalent to throwing a small child over a double-decker bus)…not quite sure how they know this…* If you fancy yourself as a ‘heavy,’ you are welcome to get involved! For the rest, there are loads of lovely spectator sports like the competition of the bands and Highland dancing, ancestry/heraldry searching, mast bands, food stalls –with pastries, shortbread, maybe even some haggis. And the drum major will stir the inner Scotsmen in all. Admission is just $12 and includes a program. After dark the Ceilidh - pipe band jamboree and a sort of Scottish bushdance ,will be held from 8pm at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) with Band “Sporting Paddy”, piping, drumming a game of Whisky Throw - whereby you throw $1 coins at the bottle of whisky on the floor…nearest wins the bottle! (ahuh...okay, may be just easier to buy a bottle...), hey, it’s all in the name of fundraising, it’ll be loud and raucous with competing bandsmen and women kilting up for the occasion. The band will sell drinks at the bar and you are welcome to BYO food, haggis optional. Cost is $8 adults, $5 children. All proceeds go to the Daylesford & District Pipes and Drums. For more info phone: 5348 1800 or 0437 659 148. *nb. no children were harmed in any heavy games. dp

Have a ball

on the Mayor

lost the guide to where to find it

PEAK Oil describes the phenomena when supplies of oil begin to decline dwindling supplies and increasing prices. Hepburn Shire council, a couple of years back acknowledged this as a real issue. This year the Mayor has arranged a charity ball to not only be a reminder of the evolving change of climate and energy use, but as a fund raiser to assist in the future during times of extremes like: catastrophic fires, floods and wind threats to our beautiful part of the world, as we have seen the past few years. On Saturday, December 3, the Hepburn Shire Mayor, Rod May hosts the Mayoral Peak Oil Charity Ball at The Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) The ball kicks off at 7pm; dinner and show tickets cost $65 and show only tickets cost $25. Live music from family band, The Cartwheels, will entertain with their special guests: Terry Murray and Gillian Eastoe. Renowned local artist Mark Payne has donated a framed original painting aptly titled: “Hog tied over a barrel”, which will be auctioned on the night. All funds raised go to the Mayor’s climate emergency fund to be dispersed by future mayors to assist with climate related disasters and emergencies in our community. A fun night out for a very worthy cause is always win win. For more information call: 5321 6451. For bookings, phone The Palais: 5348 4849. dp

Espaliering in espadrilles

Gardening in style in Blackwood TREE pruning is not an art. It’s a science. But if you do it right it makes stuff look pretty. (Find that in a textbook Einstein). For pruning novices and the newly green thumbed, don’t get your designer garden gloves in a knot, Julian the edible food gardener and guru pruner (sure that’s not a word) is here to help! Sunday, December 4, Julian is going to whip out his sharp secateurs in the espaliered fruit orchard at the Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road Blackwood) and show us how to snip, lop, tweak and train your espaliered or fanned fruit trees to optimise growth, fruiting and health. (Told you he’s a guru). The workshop will be held at 11am, at the Digger’s Club, Garden of St Erth. Members $20, non members $25. Bookings are essential, telephone: 5368 6514. kd

Better bread than red?

lost the guide to where to find it

Not likely

REDBEARD Historic Bakery (Old Bakery Lane, Trentham) has had a make over. Rest assured the beard is still red and the bread is still 100% certified organic, handmade, wood-fired, authentic sourdough cooked in the 140 year old scotch oven and exhale…phew. Along with a freshen up there’s more seating, a great viewing area for watching the artisan bakers, and best of all you can take a fresh warm loaf home straight from the oven from mid-morning, every day! Just as well too as they’ve recently ceased wholesale sales, meaning you need to head to the gorgeous village of Trentham to taste the wares, or head to one of the many farmers’ markets around the region, see page 56 for list of market days. Those interested in learning the craft themselves are also in luck, the clever fellas behind RedBeard also host workshops. Soft spot for soft cheese?

lost the guide to where to find it

Haven’t we all?

YOU’RE spoilt for cheesey choice in these parts. When Tony Raftes set up European style deli/café Bocconcini, (59-61 Vincent Street) he envisaged a well stocked pantry, cheeses, charcuterie, antipasto and named it after our favourite little white blob. But it’s not all about the cheese… (ohhh!) They have a new Summer menu, and an extensive tea list of unique blends. This tea is so exclusive, we cant tell you any more… only that perhaps, it may be the same brand loved by one Ms Oprah W. Tony and his team also share our love for coffee and serves up some of the finest Lavazza around. The deli stocks everything you need for a decadent Daylesford Christmas. Hampers filled with regional delights like Puds’ Puddings and Michele’s Biscuits start from just $30, or can be as exquisite as your budget allows. Open Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-5pm. DAYLESFORD has wineries. Yes it’s true, whilst a lot of folk may not be aware that this area is prime grounds for Burgundy Pinots, Chablis style Chardonnays and Rhine type Rieslings well, you know now! Fontanella (1225 Malmsbury Road), one the region’s newest wineries has set up in the wee hamlet of Glenlyon, just 8 klicks from Daylesford. John and Amanda Fontanella have been growing superb Pinot Grigio grapes for some time now, and with their focus being a vineyard offine Italian varietals, Nebbiolo and Prosecco complete their range. Whilst the winemaking is done off site (hey, making sure those birds don’t eat the grapes is a full time job enough) they have a stunning cellar door open each and every weekend for you to sample and swill (and spit) and enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labour. lost the guide to where to find it

you scream NOW... it goes without saying that we have a few vices here at lost. Most certainly, (and obviously) our world does not spin without caffeine. Linda Evangelista once famously spruiked that her supermodel gal pals didn’t wake up for less than $10000 a day. Sure Linda, whatever… we’ll get out of bed for a long black, but whatever floats your boat baby. Another thing we can’t live without, is sugar. Thankfully, Sugar & Ice (Shop 5, 27 Vincent Street, Daylesford) has opened! Hoorah! The brainchild of Graeme and Dawn Barnes, Sugar & Ice is aptly named, selling all manner of lolly love, and waffle cone towers of Norgen Vaas ice cream heaven and milkshakes. They do TWENTY different flavours including proper tall-glass-long-spoon slurpalicious sundaes and spiders. For the confectionary crazed; giant lollypops, gob stoppers and childhood faves will have you grinning like a kid in a… erm… candy store. There is also a jaw achingly good range of imported English toffees and kooky American confectionary. Other ice cream treats include Pat & Stick’s out-of-this-world ice cream sandwiches… and (quite literally) out-of-this-world dehydrated icecream… it’s what the spacemen eat - dontcha know?! Sugar & Ice is open daily, look out for the ice cream cone seats out the front, (just try not to lick them). For more info call: 5348 1117. kd

So now you can sound as good as they do when they expand their collective diaphragms, exercise their collective vocal chords, open their collective mouths and impose upon us singing so moving and beautiful you simply must be there to experience it. The 22nd Boîte Singers Festival (Thursday, January 12, till Sunday, January 15, in Daylesford), is four days of inspirational song - performed by passionate vocalists. Many of the performers within The Boîte group have fled their homelands seeking a new life in Australia. These talented artists bring with them their stories and share them in song, in choirs and as solo performers. The Daylesford concerts will move and inspire you. The first being a free outdoor concert on the lawn at Jubilee Lake. To be held at sunset, the melodies will be heavenly, the sunset over the lake, divine. Workshops and concerts during the weekend celebrate the diverse group of singers and their dynamic vocal styles. Workshops are inclusive and encouraging for both experienced singers and newbies. Everyone is invited to participate, with the participants becoming the star performers at the Sunday afternoon showcase event! (Go on! You know you want to...) There are evening concerts at Daylesford Town Hall, (Vincent Street), featuring headline artists, and beautiful choirs Saturday afternoon, as well as the Children’s Festival for kids aged 5-15 to partake in musical fun and circus tricks with talented musicians and teachers. The festival is inclusive, welcoming and celebrates Australia’s diversity and guarantees to inspire and uplift you. Lavandula summer harvest

lost the guide to where to find it

Smells like sunshine

THIS time of year the fields at Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm (350 Hepburn-Newstead Road, Shepherds Flat) are vibrant, the sun hot on the crop makes the air sweet and fragrant with lavender perfume. The vivid crop of purple looks it’s best around Christmas, a perfect time to picnic at the farm and relax in a purple patch before the slow harvest takes place in January. On Sunday, January 8 and 15, Lavandula invites you to watch the harvesting of perfect hand cut lavender bunches. The two harvest celebration days will feature live music, and it’s a perfect place to picnic under the trees, or enjoy something from the café. Stroll around the 1860s Swiss Italian farm house or shop for beautifully hand made lavender products in the barn. Entry is $3.50. More info: 5476 4394. kd 44

Fire Ready

lost the guide to where to find it

The ABC of the CFA VICTORIA is probably the most fire prone place on earth. Lucky you, you’re here in Summer! This year has been a big rain year which means there’s been plenty of growth around the place, in particular, grasses. The CFA have stated that this year poses a heightened risk for grass fires. Whilst not as spectacular as forest fires, grass fires move two or three times faster, and are just as deadly. On a day of total fire ban DO NOT light fires in the open, flick cigarette butts, or do anything stupid. On a day of Catastrophic fire danger (Code Red) your safest bet is to leave the region the night before, or early in the morning. In the event you’re still around, and townships are under threat, here is a list of Neighbourhood Safer Places in the region. (To be used as a last resort in bushfire emergencies.) Daylesford: CBD (Bounded by Bridport, Albert & Camp Streets & Central Springs Rd). Clunes: CBD Fraser Street (between Templeton and Service Streets) Creswick: Visitor Information Centre Car Park (behind the building) Cnr Victoria Street and Albert Street. Trentham: CBD Camp Street (between Cosmo Road and Bowen Street) Glenlyon: Eldon Street (between Molesworth Street and house number 19) Even if you’re having the best mini-break ever, on days of significant fire risk it is vital that you keep an eye/ear on local media to know what is happening in your area. For general and fire weather warnings visit: bom.gov.au. For specific fire info go to: cfa.vic.gov.au or: dse.vic.gov.au. In an emergency situation local radio will keep you up to date with what’s going on, in Daylesford and Central Victoria listen to ABC Local 91.1 fm or ABC Local 107.9 fm. Or, if you’re iPhone-d up - get CFA the app via iTunes. kd

Six and out

lost the guide to where to find it

On Australia Day CRICKET is an Australian summertime institution, from the key test to the Boxing Day test, beach cricket, backyard cricket, street cricket, stick cricket. We love it all. We talk like Richie, we zinc up and happily waste days in the sunshine. There are local boys in their whites on every country oval in every country town this time of year, and just up the road from Daylesford on Australia Day something very special happens. The grand final of the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup is played. Cricket Willow (355 Hepburn-Newstead Rd, Shepherds Flat) is the only place in the world (seriously, the whole entire planet!) where you can follow the process of how a cricket bat is made, from the bud of a willow tree, right through to the finished bat – and then test drive it (read: smash out a few runs) on the oval in front of the factory. It’s an opener’s utopia. The willow trees at Cricket Willow have been growing for over a century. These trees have been specifically grown to produce cricket bats and the bats created at Cricket Willow have a fierce reputation of regularly demolishing the team in the field. (hmmmm… perhaps our current Aussie 12 could do with a few of Cricket Willow’s finest? – Just sayin’.)... On Thursday, January 26, everyone is invited to spectate, or take part in the fun and games at Cricket Willow. From 9am the Family Super 6s kicks off, (families and friends are invited to form teams of 6 players to play). Following the Super 6s the top teams from the Central Highlands region compete for the cup. (Division 2 play at 12pm & Division 1 at 3pm). Bring a picnic and head out to picturesque Shepherd’s Flat on Australia Day for a sensational day of country cricket in a unique location. For more information visit the website: cricketwillow.com. au or telephone 5476 4277. Entry is by donation to charity. kd
