Kilt-tastic Action highlander style
THIS REGION goes by a few aliases: Spa Country, The Goldfields, and it’s also known as the Central Highlands. And as Central Highlanders we have a healthy respect for Highland activities. Oh yes… Bring on the Bagpipes! This year the Annual Daylesford Highland Gathering is celebrating its 60th year, and will be held Saturday, December 1. Kilts have been pressed, sporrans brushed, tassels fluffed and bagpipes tuned and ready to go for the street parade at 9:30am. Line Vincent Street to cop a marvelous earful of the drums and pipes belting out traditional highland marching tunes, by many visiting bands. The event then moves to Victoria Park for a day of traditional Scottish dancing, solo drum and pipe performances, contests, presentations, stalls, food and activities. Kilt up and get along to join in the fun. For more information on the Highland Gathering go to: daylesfordhighland.com.
If The Shoe Fits
lost the guide to where to find it
wear them out in Creswick HERE AT lost we often find ourselves thinking “gosh, there really doesn’t seem to be enough Pantomime in the world”. We’re sure you think that often too. Which is why we were chuffed to hear that the Creswick Theatre Company is performing the pantomime: ‘If The Shoe Fits’. Billed as a comic adult pantomime, (sounds a bit ‘oooer’) it is written and directed by Carol B Cole. If The Shoe Fits has a limited season: Saturday, December 1, then Wednesday, December 5 ‘til Saturday December 8. In the season of silliness, why not add a few more laughs and fun. Bring your friends, wear your best shoes (well if the shoe fits... come with us here…) and BYO drinks and nibbles, to Creswick Courthouse Theatre (Raglan Street) for a laugh, and a bit of old fashioned, pre-Christmas panto. Tickets are $15 at the door. For more info call Paul on: 5348 8280.

Everyone Knows…
the elves don’t make gift vouchers GIFT vouchers are the easy way out. You can tick off an entire Christmas shopping list in under five minutes in the supermarket (in-between picking up a 12 pack of toilet paper and a sirloin). The downside is that everyone knows you spent more time deliberating over your loo-rolls than their gift. If you’re in Woodend, Sunday, December 2, there are no excuses this year. Craft Markets Australia is hosting a Market Day Out at Hanging Rock (South Rock Road, Woodend). Stroll the marquees and discover high quality hand made goods, unique gifts and gorgeous bits for the fussiest peeps on your pressie list. Market stalls include hand made glass wear, fine soaps, preserves, handstitched loveliness, reclaimed-reimagined pieces, art, décor, children’s gifts, delicious fresh produce and absolutely no vouchers. Market hours: 10am ‘til 3pm. Parking $5 (includes market entry). More info at: craftmarkets.com.au.
A Needle Felted Elf
lost the guide to where to find it
in a pear tree
WHEN the boxes of Christmas decorations are unearthed after their 12 month sabbatical in the back of the cupboard/ shed/attic, it’s nice to reacquaint yourself with all those cheery baubles and jingly bits. (Not-so-nice however, to recall you couldn’t be bothered untangling the lights before putting them away last year… meh.) But back to the ornaments… There’s something extra gorgeous about a handmade ornament isn’t there? The crafty among us revel in the opportunity to whip up a little Christmas craftiness, and this year Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (High Street) is offering a session on Needle Felting, where you will create your own little 3D Christmas Elf sculpted in wool. Sunday, December 2, 11am-1pm, join the crafty collective and make an elf for the mantel, tree, or for someone special. For more info and bookings call the centre: 5424 1354. Cost $20. Includes all materials. 6
Peddling Deliciousness
lost the guide to where to find it
from London to Castlemaine CHRIS Edwards is a Pastry Peddler. Although that description is somewhat apt, it doesn’t really encapsulate the deliciousness of what this fine pastry chef is capable of. Trained in London, Chris whipped up pastries and delicious morsels of awesomeness at the Ritz and numerous schmancy hotels in London before moving to Australia eleven years ago to share his treats with us. (oh we are sooo lucky to have him in our ‘hood peeps!) Chris’ one man business is Peddling Pastry, and from his shiny new kitchen in Castlemaine he lovingly whips, pipes, blind bakes, caramelises and delicately hand-makes pastry perfection in all shapes and sizes using the finest ingredients. His range includes teeny macarons, a range of flourless orange pistachio, chocolate and lemon polenta cakes, decadent ganache tarts (did somebody say passionfruit curd and White chocolate ganache? – oh yes, we diiiid…) and a caramel chocolate ganache that is so good it should be illegal. Chris also creates shortbreads, a summery strawberry crème filled ParisBrest and the most deluxe ‘hedgehog’ you are ever likely encounter… its proper title is: Belgian Choc Orange Crunch. Chris is also responsible for the incredible Belgian choc honeycomb, made with local Des O’Toole honey and sold through Daylesford Provenders. If you’re keen to hunt down a Peddling Pastry treat, you’re in luck. Chris peddles his wares through Bocconcini (Vincent Street, Daylesford) The Hepburn General Store (Main Road, Hepburn) Coffee Basics, Café Republic and Origini (all in Castlemaine). Chris also takes private orders (oh yes…)! For more information check out the Peddling Pastry Facebook page or give Chris a call on: 0413 686 505.

A Christmas Carol
with apologies to mrs brady THE ONLY Carol better than Carol Brady is a Christmas Carol. Who doesn’t love a par-rum-pum-pum-pum (Little Drummer Boy style) belted out over a few fruit mince pies waving a candle in the air, on a warm Summer’s eve? Ahh. Loves it! The annual Trentham Carols in the Park will be held at Quarry Street Reserve (High Street, Trentham), Friday, December 7. Round up the family, and warm up your vocal cords for a not-so-silent night. Come early (from 6:30pm) for food, bring a picnic blanket, and pull up a patch of grass to listen to local performers (including Katie Nowland), and sing along to your Christmas faves from 7:30. There’ll be a huge Christmas raffle to enter… and shhhh, but rumour has it the bearded bloke in the red suit will be making an appearance at about 8:30pm. Ho ho ho! Carols in the Park finishes up at 9:30pm. For more info call Bette McLaren: 5424 1127.

plie..?
THE SOUND of the pitter-patter of tiny feet is usually accompanied by something pretty cute… more often than not, it’s the owners of those feet. For months now, the little owners of many pairs of little feet have been diligently leaping, twirling, posing and tip-toe-practicing their little hearts out at Daylesford Dance. Daylesford Dance is a local dance school specialising in Ballet, Ballroom and Latin dance classes. The junior ballet classes are putting the final touches on costumes, twisting those plaits into buns, and warming up… (happy feet, sad feet, happy feet, sad feet) for the end of year presentation. This year the Daylesford Dance ballet presentation will be held on the big stage (featuring lots of happy feet) at the Daylesford Town Hall (76 Vincent Street) Saturday, December 15 from 2pm. Adult tickets are $15, Children $8, (under 5s free). Or family tickets are $40 (2 Adults, 2 kids). Tickets are available at the door. And if you have an aspiring ballerina in your household, you might want to leap gazelle-like along to the annual Daylesford Dance Enrolment Day, Tuesday, January 29, at the Dance Studio (39 East Street Daylesford). The Studio will be open from 2pm ‘til 4pm, for preschoolers to year 12 students to register for term one. Ballet costumes will be organised, (a Ballarat dance-wear company will be measuring up and taking orders on the day) and of course, if you come along you’ll have the chance to meet the teachers Glenn and Sue. They’ll be available to chat all things dance, and discuss which class would be suitable for your aspiring tiny dancer! First term 2013 begins Monday, February 4. (At the time of print it sounds like such a long way off… We haven’t even started Christmas shopping yet! Perhaps Santa can bring us some ballet shoes? And a tutu? Yes, that would be grand.) For more info on the end of year performance, the enrolment day and 2013 ballet classes, call Glenn or Sue: 0400 669 200 or go to daylesforddance.com.au. 12

A Royal Welcome
to music lovers everywhere… THERE’S something in the water… or maybe it’s in the beer… This region produces oodles of talented musos. And the Royal Hotel (27 Vincent Street, Daylesford) has decided to jump on the band wagon, quite literally, and bring the bands (and their station wagons full of gear) back into the main street for weekends of live music. Each Friday and Saturday nights from 9:30pm ‘til 12:30am, the Royal will welcome to the stage live bands from here, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and anywhere in-between. Triple J Unearthed winner Josh Owen plays The Royal: Saturday, December 8. (Entry is free) The Royal is also bringing back the Sunday Sesh with something a bit cruisier on offer each Sunday afternoon. The hotel is open 7 days a week, 9am ‘til 10pm, and weekends 9am ‘til 1am. TINSEL, sparkles, shiny balls and glitter everything. Christmas is hands-down the bedazzliest time of year. Hepburn Springs plans on upping the glitz quotient this year with a cheeky Chrissy celebration: Dolly Diamond and Luke Gallagher Do Christmas. Cabaret diva Dolly Diamond hails from the UK, and is well loved in Spa Country, (she’s a regular cabaret fave at the annual ChillOut festival). Together they invite you to sing along to all your favourite Christmas tunes (and to trash your not-so-favourites) Saturday, December 15, at the Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). Tickets are $25 + booking fee (show only from 8:30pm), or $65 + booking fee (dinner and show, from 6:30pm). Get your tinsel boa and baubles out and your sparkle on. All I Want For Christmas
lost the guide to where to find it
is someone to do the dishes
CHRISTMAS lunch is pretty much the meal of the year. Bold statement, but is it not? At what other times do you attempt a turkey? And which other events inspire you to order a 10 kilo lump of ham, score it, stud it with cloves and smother it in sticky cranberry sauce, baking it ‘til it resembles a patent Vivienne Westwood couture number?… No other event has us hunting down duck fat to baste the spuds in (oh, so good… one moment please… excuse us, salivating…) And who pipes the cream into the brandy snaps, diligently cuts out dozens of shortbread bickies, and wraps a pud in muslin (months in advance) carefully laden with sixpence (watch the coins kiddies!) just for fun…? Indeed, Christmas a major food event like no other. Which in turn, (unless you’re a crazy-clean-as-you-go-guru) makes it a messy kitchen/dishes explosion like no other. *sigh* At about 5pm (after the pressies are all done, and the post lunch pain has worn off – but before you think about dinner (uurgh, already?) the kitchen must be faced. (Cue dramatic music… Dah dah DAAAH!) That is… if you decide to host Christmas at your place. There are many outstanding chefs in the region (with amazing kitchens and turbocharged dishwashers that you don’t need to pack… *Love*) creating heavenly Christmas lunch menus for family gatherings on the big day. Campaspe House (29 Goldies Lane, Woodend) is one such venue. Steffen Jensen has created a wonderful menu (we spied the words: oysters, prawns, turkey ballotine truffle, glazed pork belly with shallot tart, at a quick glance… oh my!) It all sounds delicious and soooo much easier (and more pleasant) than finding yourself elbow deep in a turkey, studding a ham, and having Uncle Barry drop your good glassware after a few too many Chrissy Sherries. The full five course Christmas Luncheon menu is up online at: campaspehouse.com.au. $120 per person, $80 per child (under 12 years of age). Drinks will be served from midday, lunch from 12:30pm. Bookings, call: 5427 2273. For more cafe/restaurant listings turn to page 58. 16
‘Tis The Season
to get bonkers… fa-la-la-la-laaa… LOVE the silly season. It’s a free pass to go out and get a little bit bonkers. (However, it still doesn’t justify the LED reindeer horns folks, just sayin’…) At Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6, Howe Street Daylesford) they’re celebrating with loads of great live music, cheeky DJs, and Christmas bubbles. On Friday, December 21, sample a little Horvat’s Christmas Cabaret Frivolity with mistress of ceremonies, chanteuse, and comedienne Leila Leontine and her Three Wise Men. Leila will be performing her mesmerisingly sassy act (described by Cameron Woodhead from The Age as “A natural comedian, with a huge stage presence and a singing voice that could charm birds from trees”… wow.) New Year’s Eve local DJ Casio will be spinning the party tunes until our feet fall off and we start dancing with the afore mentioned antlers on our heads. Aaaand that’s when it’s time to go home. More info call Horvat’s: 5348 2333.
Fresh Festive Fare

farmers’ market style THE LAST weekend before Christmas is hectic. Around here it’s not exactly Chaddy hectic, but busy nonetheless. Last minute fever takes hold and we’re crossing lists, checking them twice, and making last minute changes to lists, just so we can do some more crossing and checking. (Fellow list lovers… Unite! Uh huh – you know you do it too.) If your to-do list could do with a few more crosses, let us point you in the direction of the Daylesford Farmers’ Market annual Twilight Christmas Market, Saturday, December 22. This special market is the perfect place to pick up last minute treats and eats and gifts and goodness. Meet friends for a wander, say g’day to the bloke in the red suit on the local CFA truck, (who needs a red-nosed-reindeer when you have lights and sirens baby?) The market is on at the Daylesford Primary School Oval (Vincent Street) from 4pm ‘til 8pm. Find more info on their Facebook page: (DaylesfordFarmersMarket).

bring on 2013!
THE END of an old year, and beginning of a brand spanking new one is naturally a good time to do a bit of a stocktake on the past 12+ months, and look into the next 12, to reassess and think about stuff. It can be as deep as you like, (‘wow that new Aldi coffee machine I bought made my year, I think I’ll go crazy and try the Chai pods next’… to ‘I think I’ll leave my job and start a school in Namibia’). Whatever life has thrown at you in 2012, it’s great to take a step back, refocus and breathe. The Satyananda Yoga Ashram at Rocklyn (a peaceful haven nestled deep in the bush at 393 Dean-Barkstead Road, not far from Daylesford) hosts wonderful uplifting New Year’s celebrations. There are several packages available, stay for one, two, or three nights, or just come for New Year’s Eve. The Ashram has accommodation and camping is also available onsite. The purpose of the celebration is to refocus your consciousness and to cultivate and embrace positivity moving forward. There is a special program held during the days leading to New Year’s Eve. Immerse yourself in life at the Ashram with daily yoga sessions, wander or ride the bush trails and breathe the fresh air deeply. The ‘countdown’ to midnight will feature a special program of chanting with the best of Kirtanists, Nada Narayana, and meditation will bring in 2013. Love, peace, positivity and a fresh focus will lead you into the new year. Ahhh bliss. If you’d like to welcome January 1 in, mindfully, with a clear head, positive outlook and new resolve, bookings are still being taken. Three night packages from Saturday, December 29 ‘til New Year’s Day, cost $300, two nights from Sunday December 30, ‘til New Year’s Day are $250, and staying one night (New Year’s Eve) is $200. If you choose not to stay the night, you are also welcome to join in the celebrations. Enrolments for the session only are $120. (Departure 1am). A Tree Change for Santa christmas at the palais
SANTA loves his home up in the Arctic Circle. It’s cold, it snows, and he gets to wear gumboots a lot. Sounds pretty perfect for the bloke in red. We’ve been thinking about it, and we reckon that if Santa ever wanted a tree-change, he’d probably move to Hepburn Springs. In winter he’d feel right at home, there’s lots of gumboots around, the odd snow flurry, and he’d just need to pop a pair of antlers on a local wombat, and it’d almost pass for a reindeer. We’ve also decided that he’d love The Palais (111 Main Road) as well. On Christmas Day, The Palais is hosting a four course Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. It’s $75 per person, $35 for kids (under 12) and kids under 3 are free. We think that after circumnavigating the globe, Santa could be up for a cold one and a decent feed on the 25th, (watch out for Rudolph and his posse out the front). Bookings for Christmas lunch are essential, call The Palais: 5348 4849.

DECEMBER 31, you’ve had your time in the spotlight. Sure you’re the last day of the year, but really… what makes you all that more special than say: July 23, or March the 3rd? Well enough with your schmancy midnight Champagne and Fireworks! This year, your old buddy December 29 has had a gut-full and is taking a stand. The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) is celebrating New Year’s Eve, Eve, Eve this year from 9pm, with local garage band Hydrosis playing ‘til the wee hours of um… the next day. They’ll even be counting down the seconds ‘til midnight, and no doubt there’ll be a few dodgy dancefloor pashes as well. Happy New December 30 everyone! $1 Oysters Happy Hour?
lost the guide to where to find it
nothing darmagi about that!
DARMAGI (97 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) hosts happy hour from 4pm ‘til 6pm. Now, don’t draw it to their attention, but that’s actually TWO hours. And do you know what makes those two hours extra happy? $1 oysters. Oh yes indeed. And just to make it even better, (you might need to sit down for this next bit… Seated yet? Good.) They serve the freshly shucked goodness with cans of imported Peroni Beer for $5. (Can you cope?) By our calculations, you and a buddy can be seated in the glorious afternoon sunshine, with a couple of Italian beers and a dozen oysters for $22. Hello! Heaven! …And we haven’t even made it through the door of the restaurant yet. Darmagi has recently had a facelift. The restaurant is a hub of deliciousness and love, and the same can be said for the extensive wine list (with a grande range of Italian varietals). The menu is Mediterranean influenced, and is tweaked twice a day! Whatever excitingness is dished up, the wine that accompanies your meal will have an equally exciting story. Perhaps it was grown on the side of a (still active) volcano? Perhaps it’s orange? Perhaps it comes from the heel of the Italian boot? Or perhaps from down the road, leave the decision up to the sommelier, and a little bit of magic happens. Salute! Darmagi itself is named after an Italian wine varietal. The legend goes: Angelo Gaja’s father strolled past his vineyard shaking his head disapprovingly as his son had planted Cabernet Sauvignon on a very famous Nebbiolo site, causing much embarrassment to the family. He muttered the words “Darmagi, darmagi, darmagi” as he wandered the vines – (darmagi meaning ‘what a pity… what a shame’). The resulting Cab Sav is one of Italy’s most famous and sought after wines. With a wine list, food, and a happy hour this good, Darmagi might just become one of our most sought after restaurants as well. They’re open 12pm ‘til late, Thursday – Monday (and there’s usually someone making take away coffees from 10am, (shhh, that’s our little secret). Bookings: 5348 2221. 24

Phoenix Rising
trentham’s cosmo is back! IN 2005, the iconic Cosmopolitan Hotel in Trentham was destroyed by fire. The fire spared only the exterior, a few chimneys, and a few familiar (now blackened) bits and pieces (including the bar, *phew*). Seven years later, with a HUGE amount of blood, sweat, tears, and beers… (down the back in the very excellent re-imagined stables) this muchloved watering hole is rising from the ashes in January! Hooray!! The Cosmo has been completely recreated from the stumps up, and at the time we go to print, swarms of tradies are working tirelessly behind the blackened facade to bring this significant piece of Trentham’s history back to life. Regardless of the grand reopening date, (check thecosmopolitanhotel.com.au for updates) The Cosmo will still be welcoming in a very happy shiny new year with dinner and music by Bakehouse on New Year’s Eve. Tickets are $85p/p. For more info and bookings phone 5424 1516.
Cheesy Happy Dancing
lost the guide to where to find it
in the sunshine
THERE are three things that get us doing a little happy dance around here: holidays, cheese and wine. (Sure there are a couple more things on that list, but these three totally float our boat) Happiness is a summer’s day with friends, great wine and creamy wedges of handmade cheese. And guess what, our idea of heaven can be yours too, down the road at Goldfields Farmhouse Cheese (71A Albert Street Creswick). This summer, (in their sunny courtyard) these very clever cheese artisans are serving up wonderful platters of their own white, semi hard and blue cheeses *salivating* with local wines and 3 Troopers beer from Beaufort. Goldfields Farmhouse Cheeses create 16 fine cheeses from local milk, and have about 12 in their fridge at any one time, have a taste, and take home your faves to share with friends. (Cue happy dance now). Open Friday - Sunday 10am to 4pm. Info 0409 756 289 or visit: goldfieldsfarmhouse.com.au. 26
Fireworks Schmireworks happy new year’s eve!
IF YOU happen to find yourself onboard a yacht in the middle of Sydney Harbour, between the Opera House and the Bridge on New Year’s Eve, well good for you. If, however, you find yourself in Daylesford, let us assure you, although the fireworks aren’t quite as blinding, (ahem… what fireworks?) and the Lake isn’t exactly harbourish, or home to humpback whales… the clock will still strike midnight and the new year will be warmly welcomed by all. Indeed, Daylesford can throw a party like the best of them. Red Fox Spotted

in creswick
STUFF is happening in Creswick. And not just stuff like: there are cute ducks on the lake, and grass is growing on the roundabout. AWESOME stuff is happening. The most recent awesomeness to happen is the opening of a brand new café/deli called Red Fox Deli at 67A Albert Street. Call in and stock up on delicious bits for platters, like award winning hams and small goods, antipasto and fab cheeses, and European style sausages. Or stay a while over a coffee, and one of their insanely delish pastries and treats. Red Fox are also rolling out Devonshire Tea Thursdays, and High Tea Sundays (bookings required for High Tea). Red Fox is open 6 days a week (Tuesdays the Fox sleeps). Opening hours: Monday, and Wednesday to Friday 7:30am - 5pm, and weekends 8:30am - 5pm. For all the latest Red Fox goss check out their Facebook page: (search Red Fox Deli Creswick) or give them a call: 5345 1414. 28

happy new year glenlyon style AT GLENLYON’S annual Mixed Sports Day, you will see no badminton, no basketball or polo. There shall be no lacrosse, no netball, and certainly nothing resembling footy. (Okay, maybe a little bit of impromptu kick-to-kick in the car park). But on the whole, the sports we’re talking about here are, well… a little bit bonkers. And that’s what we love about it. This annual event has been held in Glenlyon since 1857, (yes, that’s an eighteen at the start there…) They’ve been up to their sporting shenanigans since lumps of gold were being pulled out of the ground around here). This light hearted community sports event is one of the last of its kind in the country, and visitors still come from far and wide to join in the fun. The Mixed Sports Day will be held (as always) on New Year’s Day from 10am, at the picturesque Glenlyon Recreation Reserve in Dysart Street. Events include ladies’ gumboot throwing (we don’t expect to see a Hunter tossed, but you never know… BYO special super-flight aerodynamic boot girls!) There will be wee pony races, axe wielding professionals will take to chunky logs for a bit of high action wood chopping, there’ll also be children’s races, and possibly the highlight of the day: the world championship bullboar sausage eating and mineral water drinking competition. Dah-dah-dah-daaaah! – (This event is indeed worthy of such impressive fanfare, however, enter if you dare…) Remember, the Mixed Sports Day IS held on new year’s day, be mindful of this fact if you’re planning a large celebration on new year’s eve… That bullboar competition is TOUGH at the best of times... *shudder* Enter everything on the day, BYO picnics, kids’ running shoes (if they’re competing in something) and appetite if you fancy yourself in the bullboar/mineral water competitions… And possibly a bucket, your call. For more info on the Glenlyon Mixed Sports Day go to glenlyon.vic.au and check out the calendar of events.

Hello Cello
lost the guide to where to find it
it’s ben again BEN SOLLEE is a man on a gentle mission. With his wellplucked cello slung across his back, he can often be spotted riding his pushie to gigs. Hailing from Kentucky USA, he probably won’t (however,) be cycling all the way to Castlemaine when he plays at the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street), Saturday, January 12. Ben’s show promises to be awesome. His performances are an exciting blend of eclectic folk, bluegrass, and jazz styles. He gives a lot of himself to his audience, with personal stories and opinions shared in his smoky/rough/smooth vocal style. He’s an accomplished composer, a genre-busting cellist, with a side of banjo, mandolin and guitar, with a smidge of political activism on the side. Tickets to his gig are $45 (at the door, show 8:30pm) or $79 dinner and show, (dinner from 7pm). For more info and bookings call the Theatre: 5472 1196 or visit: theatreroyal.info.

Hanging Out
lost the guide to where to find it
for rocking horses HANGING Rock is a spectacular setting for just about anything. Take a picnic to Hanging Rock, and a few sandwiches suddenly becomes a little iconic. Hanging Rock has hosted major international acts live in the natural amphitheatre, it’s well recognised on screen, and in January Hanging Rock plays host to a whole lotta horsepower, with Racing At The Rock on New Year’s day, and again on Australia Day. Everyone knows that new year’s resolutions don’t actually start until February 1, so pack away the guilt and celebrate the first day of 2013 with friends and family and a whole lot of fast horsies. Pack the Berocca and Barbeque Shapes in the picnic basket, put a twenty on race four, and find a shady spot under the trees to reflect on the year that was, and fine tune those resolutions for 2013. (…seriously, at lost we’re giving you an extra month to get sorted there, well, WE need an extra month with all the BBQs and parties on the calendar! LOVE summer!) Entry to Hanging Rock Races on New Year’s Day is $25, gates open at 10am. Australia Day (Saturday, January 26,) is yet another chance to unearth the fascinator you paid a fascinatingly large amount of money for in October, and frock up for a bit of good time race action. Australia Day at the Hanging Rock Races is huge. This year, they are celebrating 125 years of racing at the rock, and that seems like a good enough reason to let your hair down to us. (Remember, resolutions start Feb folks, so it’s ok.) There are shuttle busses from Woodend Station to get you there and take you home, and entry is, once again, $25 at the gate. There will be live entertainment, big screens, food vendors and bars open. (Please note no BYO alcohol is permitted to be brought onto Hanging Rock racecourse on either date). For more info on New Year’s Day and Australia Day Racing at the Rock visit countryracing.com.au or call 1300 139 402.

Green Thumbs
and golden sunshine HIGH SUMMER can get rather toasty around here… Average gardens get a little browned off with the whole ‘heat’ thing and look a little hot and bothered. Two magnificent summer gardens are throwing open the garden gates for everyone to come and wander through and take a little inspiration: Saturday, January 12, and Sunday January 13. Come and explore Sedum (3 Frame Avenue, Hepburn Springs), a tapestry of colour and form, planted specifically to cope with our local weather extremes, in a high fire risk area. There are steep gravel paths (that means sensible shoes peeps). Food, drinks and plants will be available to purchase. Sailors Hill Garden will also be open at 27 Hoaths Road, Daylesford. Entry to each garden is $7 (children under 18 free). Garden open hours are 10am ‘til 4:30pm. (No doggies please!) More information call Alan or Kaye Harrison on 5348 2698 or visit: opengarden.org.au.
The Goldfields

a world of organs… apparently! SINCE Barry Morgan appeared melodiously out of an organ and into our lives, we’ve never been the same, and neither has our appreciation of the good ol’ organ. The big daddy of them all The Pipe Organ is both monumental and grand, and many historic organs reside in cathedrals and churches throughout the region and will be celebrated in the eighteenth annual (yes, EIGHTEENTH – why have we not heard of this before?!) Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival. Tuesday, January 15, there will be two recitals in Clunes: at 11am Italian organist Christian Tarabbia will be performing a magnificent organ concerti by Haydn and Handel with the Festival Orchestra, at Clunes Uniting Church (Service Street). And Canadian Tenor Justin Burwood and Australian Lutenist Rosemary Hodgson will be performing at 2pm at St Paul’s Anglican Church (84 Bailey Street). Info and bookings: 0429 327 097 or ballarat.com/organs.

play on...
A MIDSUMMER night’s dream would surely be to catch a little live Shakespeare with friends, whilst imbibing fine wines, at a boutique vineyard on a balmy midsummer evening. (In fact, we’re pretty certain Mr. Shakespeare had that in mind when he penned his plays in the early 1600s). Rowanston On The Track is a winery pretty much committed to making that midsummer’s night dream come true. They are hosting Essential Theatre’s performance of Twelfth Night at their annual Shakespeare in the Vines event. Rowanston On The Track Winery is nestled in the northern foothills of the Macedon Ranges (at 2710 Burke and Wills Track, Glenhope). It’s all a bit gorgeous with the property boasting original stonewall fences, and great views out to the McHarg ranges. Their wines are a bit clever as well, having picked up many awards this year, (at the Kyneton, Macedon, Daylesford, Fed Square, and the Wine and Spirits Asia/Singapore shows.) Their high quality boutique varietals include Shiraz, Merlot, a Sparkling Merlot, Riesling, and a Sparkling Blanc de Noir. The wines are carefully crafted using meticulous, traditional techniques, and can be sampled at their cellar door: (10am till 5pm seven days a week), or by the glass whist watching a bit of Shakespeare in the Vines. Twelfth Night will be performed Saturday, January 19, at the winery, at 6pm. The performance runs approximately two hours and includes a short interval. Tickets are $70, which includes a delicious tuckerbag picnic. The winery will be open from 4pm on the day, and your picnic can be picked up any time from 4pm. Sample the wines, choose a glass of your favourite, find your perfect picnic spot, and bring on a bit o’ Shakespeare. (If the weather is bad, they do have a plan B up their sleeves, make your way to the winery and the show will go on!) For more information and bookings go to rowanston.com or call the winery: 5425 5492 or visit: rowanston.com. (And don’t forget to pack your picnic blanket!)

Newstead Live

a very big weekend out NEWSTEAD is an historic, quiet sort of town, with a couple of pubs, a couple of cafes, and one excellent annual music festival. Newstead Live will be held Friday, January 25, to Monday, January 28. The whole town becomes the festival venue, with bands and acts performing down shaded streets (all within walking distance) and the main street of town being the festival hub. Newstead Live pulls in some amazing international acts, and this year is no exception with world class performers in intimate performance spaces, including Rory McLeod (UK), Monique Brumby, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan (UK) Wes Carr’s Buffalo Tales, Modhan (Scotland) Austin Lucas and PJ Bond (USA) The Stilsons, and oh so many more! For the full list of bands, venues, events and performances, as well as ticketing and camping options visit: newsteadlive.com or call: 5476 2360.

Fire Ready
lost the guide to where to find it
it’s that time of year again… HELLO DECEMBER-JANUARY. How we love you for your loooong afternoons, your cicada song and freckles, your feint (albeit intoxicating) scent-combo of Aerogard, barbeques and sunscreen, and your significant lack of fog and mist. We love you summer… but damn, you come with some baggage girl! Baggage in the shape of snakes, sunburn and bushfires. (Eh, ‘spose you can’t have it all)… If you happen to be here in summer, you need to know some important stuff. Victoria is one of the most bushfireprone places on the planet, and bingo, you’re here at the most fiery time, and oh looky…we’re surrounded by bush! Therefore, it is hugely important that you know what to do if you’re here on a day of significant fire risk, ie: total fire ban, extreme fire danger, or (eek!) catastrophic (code red) fire danger… so here it is: Firstly if you don’t have to be in the region, don’t stay! Leave the night before, or early in the morning. (That’s a no brainer!) If you do have to stay, if possible keep out of the bush, and don’t do anything mental, (like light a campfire or flick a cigarette butt out your car window… Der!) Keep an ear on local media to hear the latest about any fires, including road closures, and imminent danger in the area. For general weather and fire weather warnings check the Bureau of Meteorology website at bom.gov.au. For specific fire warnings go to cfa.vic.gov.au or dse.vic.au. The CFA also has a helpful app for smart phones. In an emergency fire situation around Daylesford and Central Victoria listen to ABC local 91.1 fm or ABC local 107.9fm. They will keep you up to date with developments minute to minute. There is also a comprehensive list of neighbourhood safer places (to be used in a bushfire emergency as a place of last resort) at saferplaces.cfa.vic.gov.au (search by town or shire). Hopefully you won’t need to know any of this stuff, but now you do! (Just in case).

down a dusty track… FRYERSTOWN is an unlikely place for an antique fair. Aside from the fact that the town itself is quite the antiquity, there’s not much around (apart from a few dusty paddocks and a few old buildings hinting at old gold money). However, the hot dusty land behind the main street still entices thousands of people to town each summer in search of treasure. But unlike the days of the dry diggings, narrow mine shafts and odd gold strike, you’re much more likely to find something of great value - lovingly lined up on trestle tables, tucked under shaded canopies and umbrellas at the Fryerstown Antique Fair. This year the 38th annual Antique Fair will be held across the Australia Day long weekend. (Saturday, January 26: 9am – 5pm, Sunday, January 27: 9am – 3pm, and Monday, January 28: 9am – 5pm). This massive fair draws an annual pilgrimage of antique and collectables lovers from all over the country. It harbours such a wealth of eclectic relics and retro goodness, everything from collections of old doilies and linen, to large scale industria, glassware, toys, fine china, postcards, pictures, furniture, fashion and old stuff. So much stuff that it can be seen from space (ok, not really, but it’s still extremely massive and extremely awesome). The tricky thing is not the finding of a dream treasure, or much sought after knick-knack, (that bit is easy) the real adventure is finding the fair in the middle of the bush... From Daylesford head north to Castlemaine and follow the signs from Guildford, and if you’re coming from the north, follow the signs from Chewton (near Castlemaine). (Or just follow the people with trailers and utes… they know they’re going to go home with loads of goodies!) Trawl the stalls, and dust off a bargain. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, (there’s a bit of shade around but not much, it can get very hot and did we mention dusty...?), there are food stalls and cold drinks available to purchase. Entry to the Antique Fair is $6. Kids under 12 free. (All proceeds go to the upkeep of Fryerstown’s Historic Hall). More info: patriciacubeta@gcom.net.au or call 5473 4373.
