Summery slidey blues and tropical beats
PHIL and Trudy Edgeley are a dynamic duo on and off the stage. Together they have played across the land, Phil’s British Folk/Blues songwriting mixed with Trudy’s tropical rhythms and soulful melodies create a lusciously rich, bluesy, rootsy, rhythmic sound that can’t help but move you. Over the years Phil has collected many instruments other musos drool over, (um… hopefully not literally... that could get messy). He’ll bring them along for their next two gigs at the Glenlyon General Store; Friday, December 5, 6:30pm 8:30pm, and Saturday, January 3, 3pm - 5pm, in a special Saturday afternoon session. Come and see Phil and Trudy (and Phil’s awesome fave guitars) at the General (63 Barkly Street, Glenlyon). For more info like Glenlyon General Store on Facebook or call them: 5348 7922. To sample a little of what Phil and Trudy are all about go to www.philedgeley.com. Entry is free.

Hark!
The Trentham Angels Sing
FOR some people it’s just not Christmas without a couple Oh Come All Ye Faithfuls and a few Par-Rum-Pa-Pum-Pums… You might hang out for the carols on the telly on Christmas Eve… (who doesn’t love a quiet convivial whilst wrapping pressies - watching all those babies go to sleep by candlelight as Marina Prior brings the house down with Hark the Herald Angels Sing…? Love. It.) If you feel the need to sing a big Chrissy anthem in the open air on a warm December eve’ Trentham is hosting their annual Carols in the Park at Quarry Street Reserve, High Street, on Friday December 5, 6:30pm – 9pm. This free community carols evening is a showcase of local talent singing all your favourite Christmas tunes. Bring a picnic, or buy dinner at one of the food stalls. We hear the big bloke in the red suit will be paying a visit as well… Brush up on your carol lyrics and tune up for Trentham carols! For more info call Bette: 5424 1127.

THERE’S no time for a spring clean like summer. The entire town of Trentham has been de-cluttering, sorting, and culling their ‘stuff’ from their houses and sheds in preparation for the annual Whole Town Garage Sale. If you love a treasure hunt, a trawl through other people’s stuff, and the potential to discover a massive bargain (think Antiques Roadshow… you might discover a forgotten Renoir or something… well you never know…) head to Trentham-town on Saturday, December 6 with a pocket full of cash and an empty boot. Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (corner Market and High Streets) will have the BBQ fired up for a sausage sizzle brekky from 8am. Buy a $3 map of the Garage Sale Trail and get treasure hunting! For more info phone the centre 5424 1354 or go to trenthamnc.org.au.

THINK quick… What’s the most famous bagpipe tune you can think of? How about the bagpipe solo in John Farnham’s You’re the Voice huh? Iconic piece of piping right there… Back in the 80s some bands would’ve gone with a guitar solo, a keyboard solo, a sax solo… but no… Mr. Farnham went for the rousing bagpipes. Visionary. Now here’s a little claim to fame you might be unaware of... that very piper who played on You’re The Voice lives in Daylesford… True story. We have some mighty passionate Scottish folk here in Daylesford, and a rousing Pipe and Drums band too. On a warm summer’s evening you can hear the distant sound of bagpipes float over the hills, as the band practices for Daylesford’s Annual Highland Gathering. Each year on the first Saturday in December, Daylesford hosts the first Highland Gathering of the season. Saturday, December 6, Vincent Street will come alive with the sound of pipe bands from all over Victoria. They play and march up the street (from 9:30am – no need to set your alarm... you’ll hear them.) The bands make their way with the tartaned throng to Victoria Park for a fantastic family day out, with more kilts, pipes, drums, food and dancing than you could poke a haggis at. The day is celebratory with loads of Celtic memorabilia and displays, if you have a Scottish heritage learn about your clan, take a look at the Highland Dancing competitions, massed bands, and sample and buy as much Scottish food as you can handle. This year the Rolls Royce Club returns and will have many old and new vehicles on display. Entry is $12 Adult/ $8 Conc/Children $4, (under 5 free.) Programs $3 at the gate. Gates open 7am. For a little Highland inspiration and to stay up to date with the latest Gathering info like them on facebook.com/DaylesfordHighlandGathering or go to daylesfordhighland.com.

Gentlemen,

it’s time to shop
18
THE main shopping strip in Daylesford is well known as being a bit boutiquey-gorgeous. Not too many people leave Vincent Street empty handed, with galleries and gift shops lining the street with unique and carefully curated homewares and fashion. Up until now, there has been little for the boys to browse, other than well-written menus and this little magazine whilst waiting for their partner to ‘just have a quick look’ (guilty as charged). Times have recently changed on Vincent with a new men’s boutique, Mannen, now open at 66 Vincent Street. Mannen has grown from a tiny corner of the delightful Harry and Me store (across the road at 57D Vincent Street) into a brand new, fully fledged shop in its own right. Amanda at Harry and Me introduced a selection of menswear into her store and the boys just loved it. So much so, that the demand called for its very own store. Mannen stocks exquisite pieces, one offs, and well designed items of clothing, accessories, homewares and furniture. Amanda has a great eye for detail (and gorgeousness) and stocks cult Dutch label Scotch and Soda, Status Anxiety, and other quality European items from Scandinavia and beyond. The furniture items at Mannen are masculine, industrial and unique. Even the shop display counters are special, like the antique Japanese lolly display cabinet… (muuuuch too awesome to put lollies in!) And a bonus for the girls… as a result of Mannen’s opening, there’s extra space at Harry and Me! Amanda has filled the store with more beautiful women’s labels, including Maison Scotch (the women’s Scotch & Soda line) and the entire range of Lee Mathews clothing. As well as favourites like Elk, and a stunning range of Christmas décor and gifts. Mannen is open 10am-5pm Monday – Saturday, and 10:304pm Sunday (5348 2165). Harry and Me is open 10am-5pm, 7 Days (5348 1172). For more info like Harry and Me and Mannen on Facebook, or follow Harryandme on Instagram. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
Christmas craziness has gone to the dogs

NEW Year’s Eve is one of the biggest social nights of the year – a chance to frock up and go a bit bonkers and pash a random at midnight. Or…. Not. If you’d prefer a little quiet reflection, and to focus on creating positivity for the year ahead, the Satyananda Yoga Ashram at Rocklyn (near Daylesford) offers a new year’s eve retreat to create positive direction in your life for 2015. The retreat can be taken as a four night stay from Sunday, December 28 until Thursday, January 1, as a three night retreat, an overnight retreat (just staying on New Year’s eve) or come just for the meditation, chanting and a peaceful and conscious entry into 2015. WE HAVE some great local traditions. And one of the big faves on the calendar is the annual New Year’s Eve parade. This parade is a celebration for the families and fun-lovers in town and everyone is invited to be involved. Local kids decorate their bikes and ride up and down the street ringing their bells and swishing past in tinsel and decorated helmets. Clever creative-types spend weeks creating awesome floats out of their utes and wave to the crowds lining Vincent Street, (between the roundabouts) in Daylesford. This year the crowd will start gathering for an early dinner with food stalls serving from 6pm. The parade starts at 8pm. This year new-look trophies will be awarded for favourite parade entries. And if the parade isn’t enough excitement for one night, following the parade the Rex Cinema (47-53 Vincent St) will be showing The Hobbit – The Battle of Five Armies from 9pm. Welcome 2015!
28
WAY back in 1857 a bright spark in Glenlyon thought it’d be a good idea to host a community sports day. The tradition started with wood chopping and pony races and some good (very) old-fashioned fun. 158 years later the tradition continues, and not too much has changed… just with a bit of added gumboot throwing, face painting and mineral water drinking added in for good measure. The Glenlyon Mixed Sports Day is held each year on New Year’s Day at the Glenlyon Recreation Reserve (Dysart St.). Gates open at 10am for a day of competitions and fun for all ages. Watch wood choppers from all over Australia make light work of a few big logs (make friends with them if you can – a wood chopping pal is handy to know in winter folks.) – All chopped blocks are up for auction afterwards. There are standing block, underhand, tree felling comps, two-man combos, cross saw events and an under 18s comp. (Bet you didn’t know wood chopping was so diverse huh?) Take part (if you dare) in the bullboar eating world championship competition, (oh yes… This is unique to the region) and the Glenlyon mineral water drinking world championship (Our advice is to skip brekky folks…) There will be various horse and pony races (including the prestigious Glenlyon Cup) as well as show jumping comps, demos of horse and carriage driving and harness racing, various kids’ foot races, a ladies’ gumboot throwing competition (start practicing girls… Not the precious Hunters though… just your standard issue rubber gumboot will do.) All events can be entered on the day (except the wood chop.) There’ll also be kids’ face painting, bands, raffles, and hopefully the sun will shine on a classic country day out. This much loved New Year’s Day event raises money for the Daylesford and District Hospital, local charities and youth groups. Entry is $10, kids under 12 free. See Lamine Sonko, Jen Skate, Liz Frencham, Mal Web, Nino Tsitsishivili, Joseph Jordania, Jane Thompson, James Rigby, Kelsey James, Lisa Salvo, Georgie Darvidis, John Flanagan, Rose Paez, Swami Atmamuktananda and choirs from all over Australia. The hills of the Central Highlands will be alive with the sound of music and sweet sweet voices. Thursday, January 8, head to Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) for a Georgian Supra – A Supra is an important event in Georgian culture – a feast of food and song with lots of toasting and celebrating. You’re invited to this ancient tradition featuring musicians from Georgia: Joseph Jordania and Nino Tsitsishivili with the Melbourne based Georgian Choir Gorani. The event will be held 7pm-11pm. Tickets $60. (Includes the banquet.) During the festival Joseph Jordania and Nino Tsitsishivili will be leading a full day workshop exploring the richness of Georgian song. Another hands on full day singing workshop will be held with Jane Thompson and James Rigby. Come and have a big sing with them. You can expect great original arrangements of contemporary Australian songs, some beautiful, some powerful, all awesome. Bookings and the full Boite Singers’ Festival program, is available at boite.com.au or find them on facebook.com/Boite.sf LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

THIS year the Boite Singers’ Festival is celebrating their silver anniversary. That’s 25 years of singing and sharing wonderful music. A silver anniversary calls for a celebration, so it’s only fitting they host it on The Silver Steak vintage train, Saturday, January 10. Join the merriment and sing up a storm aboard the train as it travels to Bullarto with Mal Webb and the Furbelows Singers from 11:30am – 1pm. Enjoy morning tea along the way on the recently reconstructed line (it was burnt out during the 2009 fires). Tune up for an onboard workshop and enjoy the swing sounds of Mal and band. The train travels through the bush, hear a little about the history of the Spa Country Railway from the volunteers who run it today. Daylesford Train Station is in Raglan Street. Tickets are $40. Permaculture Club

TO LIVE sustainably is a dream for many. Most of us do our bit here and there, composting, installing solar panels and other bits and pieces, which is important, but if you’re interested in taking it to the next level you need to take a tour of David Holmgren and Su Dennett’s Hepburn Springs home Melliodora. In 1985 their land was a blackberried wasteland. They have transformed it into a permaculture paradise and invite you to take a tour of the house and permaculture garden Sunday, December 7, and again on Sunday, January 11. The house tours are conducted 10am-2:30pm, the garden tour follows at 2pm-4:30pm. Be inspired and explore one of the world’s best examples of permaculture. It’s your opportunity to ask these sustainable living gurus a million questions so you can start living gently with the earth too. Tours are $60 (house or garden) or $90 for both. Summertime
lost the guide to where to find it
= pooltime
34
OH HELLO summer. Welcome back! Summertime in this region means two major things for all of us… 1: We are all super-duper fire aware… AND 2: THE POOL IS OPEN! Firstly, the important fire stuff... ABC Local Radio regularly updates fire information throughout summer. ABC Ballarat can be found on your radio at 107.9fm, and ABC Central Victoria can be heard at 91.1fm. In a fire emergency the radio is your BEST source of information. For latest fire updates follow @ CFA_Updates on twitter and like CFA on facebook.com/cfavic And now for the fun summer stuff... Saturday, December 6, the padlocks are unlocked, the bolts unbolted, the shackles are cast aside and the town is abuzz with pool fever. Rummage in the back of the shed for the inflatables, dust off the thongs, throw a towel over your shoulder and head into town for a laze at the pool. There’s nothing like a country pool, a few coins gets you in, a few more gets you an icypole. And if you’re lucky the sun might even shine. In the Hepburn Shire there are four pools, Daylesford Pool is in Central Springs Road. (5348 3255) Opening hours this summer are 10am-6pm weekends and public holidays, 10am-6pm school holidays and 12pm – 6pm weekdays during school term. Clunes Pool in Ligar Street (5345 3312) is open 10am-6pm weekends and public holidays, 10am-6pm school holidays and 12pm – 6pm weekdays during school term. Trentham Pool in Market Street (5424 1212) is open 1pm – 6pm weekends, 1pm – 6pm public holidays and school holidays and 3:30pm – 6pm during school term. The toddlers’ pool at Calembeen Park, Creswick is open is open 1pm – 6pm weekends, 1pm – 6pm public holidays and school holidays, and 3:30pm – 6pm during school term. The Hepburn Shire pool season will be open until Monday, March 9, unless it’s still hot, in which case council will keep the pools open ‘til Autumn is upon us. ‘Til then, see you poolside! A Sunday session with Ms. Stringer
LIZ Stringer is a big fave around here. Her luscious vocals and formidable skills on the guitar have us swooning and quietly wishing we kept up with our guitar lessons all those years ago… Liz has a loyal following around the country and last year recorded a gig at the Yarra Hotel in Abbotsford, her first live album. The album was released last October and she’s touring the land promoting it – this includes a show at The Old Hepburn Hotel, 236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs, Sunday, January 18. Liz has played Byron Bay’s Bluesfest with Mia Dyson and Jen Cloher and has recently returned from a small tour in Germany and the Americana Fest in Vienna, Austria. Go Liz! Tickets to see her a little closer to home are $15. The gig starts at 5pm. For more info go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au or call the pub on 5348 2207.

An annual pilgrimage
lost the guide to where to find it
to the mecca of old stuff
38
RUMMAGERS, collectors, vintage lovers, antique aficionados, and trash and treasure fans, please, take a seat. There is something we need to share with you, and we feel it’s best if you’re seated when you hear the news. The annual Fryerstown Antique Fair is on again across the long weekend in January. Yes, we know…. Deep breaths, deep breaths people, we understand the excitement, but please don’t pass out on us. Breathe, breathe… focus. For those uninitiated, the Fryerstown Antique Fair is known around Australia as being one of the very best antique and collectable fairs in the country. Sellers and buyers from all over Australia flock to the teeny hamlet of Fryerstown for the long weekend and boy is it a haven of awesomeness for those who love old stuff. This year marks the 40th annual fair, and we’re pretty certain that it’ll be bigger and better than ever. (If that’s even possible.) The fair is held in and around the grounds of the historic Fryerstown Hall (Castlemaine street). Stalls are set up inside the hall, and sprawl out forever in the paddocks around and behind the hall. Wear comfy shoes and a sunhat (it gets hot and dusty) and prepare to spend a day trawling the trestles and hunting for treasure. Stallholders sell everything from retro furniture and homewares, to vintage linen, militaria, kitchenware, Victoriana, clothing, vases, pottery, Australiana, fine antiques, rusty bits and bobs, pieces needing love to restore to former fabulousness, and pieces perfect in their rustic-ness. You’ll find everything from Bakelite buttons to coloured crystal, battered old tins and vintage signs and amazing bits from yesteryear. It’s an exciting roller coaster ride down memory lane. Take cash, and a trailer… (you’ll need both… unless you just want to buy buttons.) The Fryerstown Antique Fair will be held Saturday, January 24, ‘til Monday, January 26. For more info call 5473 4373 or go to onlymelbourne.com.au/fryerstown-antique-fair. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU
