Head to Lyonville chop chop
HOW much wood would a wood chop chop if a wood chop could chop wood? Well in this neck of the woods, the wood choppers chop lots, and they chop it fast. Wood chopping is a tough competitive sport. Sure, it’s not one of your more glamourous sports, it’s not up there with polo or yachting for example, there’s not a huge amount of complex tactical strategy involved, and you probably wont see that Waterhouse bloke on the telly giving you the odds on who’s going to chop through the log first. But whatever… these blokes can chop a log like no one’s business. Saturday, February 1, the annual Lyonville Wood Chop is on at Lyonville Hall (Bremner St). See local legends and wood choppers from afar get the guns out, swing an axe and chop a big block in half. It’s a hugely popular community day with a BBQ, cake stall and loads of fun for all. Entry will cost you a few coins at the gate and the action’s on all day. Chop chop.
Friday night blues
…better than Sunday night blues
FRIDAY night is the best night of the week is it not? There’s the promise of the empty weekend ahead, two big blankcanvas days, crispy clean and free to go all Jackson Pollock on them whichever way you choose. Friday nights should be celebrated, with friends and whatever tipples your fancy. The weekend is welcomed in style at The Old Glenlyon General Store with fab food, happy hour and great live tunes. Friday, February 7, The Fabulous Jennie Brown and Bruce Millar will be playing. Jennie is well known as the voice of Daylesford, and has been belting out the tunes in every genre imaginable (we doubt screamcore – but you never know) on every stage imaginable right across town well before our happy hamlet popped up on the tourist radar. Hear Jennie and Bruce play a bit of swing, jazz and sultry blues to ease you into your awaiting weekend. The Old General is at 63 Barkly Street Glenlyon. 5348 7922. 2

Horse skills
and cow drills
CAMPDRAFT is not just something that happens when you leave the tent unzipped. Campdraft is Australia’s own family horse sport, encouraging and developing great horse skills and good stewardship towards horses and cattle. Each year the Maldon and District Campdraft Association hold an annual competition to show off their awesome skills. This year the Maldon Association will host their 40th annual Campdraft at 11 Lewis Road Maldon. This family event will require the riders to choose and cut a cow from a mob, for the rider to then navigate the cow around a four leaf clover pattern on the arena (yes a four leaf clover…. Could they have picked a trickier shape?) AND they have to do it in 40 seconds. (Personally we don’t think we could make a cow do that in 40 years.) The Maldon and District Campdraft will be held Saturday, February 8, (from 7am) and concludes: Sunday, February 9, 3pm. For more info call 5475 2707.
Jazz hands
for Valentine’s Day
LOVERS love jazz. They just do. The smoky, sultry, saucy, sexypants-ness of it all. Smooth tunes, luscious vocals, the whole shebang, really is a precursor to lurrrve. So it makes perfect sense that on the lovingest night of nights on le calendar of love, (that’d be Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, incase you are living under a cold hearted rock,) that there’d be a little jazz on the menu somewhere. This Valentine’s Day the jazz shall be served up steaming hot on a silver platter at The Old Glenlyon General Store. Vida Jazz (with Tania Petrini on vocals, Bruce Millar on double bass and Robbie Melville on guitar) will be swinging all over the stage, from a bit o’ bossa, to some funky grooves, a few sultry ballads, a smidge of blues, and a dollop of gospel… they intend on sharing their love for jazz with the lovers at the Old General. (63 Barkly Street Glenlyon). For more info like Glenlyon General Store on Facebook or call 5348 7922. 4

Don’t fall into the Booby Trap
YOU’D have to be living under a very large soundproof rock not to have heard about the Love Your Sister phenomenon. In a nut shell, Samuel Johnson (much loved actor, and all ‘round good guy) has a dear sister Connie, who has terminal breast cancer. Not to take this cruel diagnosis lying down Connie joked that her bro should ride around the nation on a unicycle to raise awareness and money to help find a cure. Challenge accepted. (…and challenge almost completed!!) His aim was to break the Guinness world record for the longest distance on a unicycle, to raise $1million, (tick! $1.2m and counting!), and to educate everyone in his path with the message “Don’t fall into the booby trap. Be breast aware.” To date, Sam has traversed over 14,000 kilometres on one wheel. (Seriously wow.) Thousands and thousands of people in countless communities around the country have turned out and lined the streets in pink to welcome Sam and his Boobmobile to their towns, to support Sam and Connie, to share their stories with him and money for this most worthy of causes. Early last month Sam rode into Daylesford and Hepburn Springs to bring the Love Your Sister message to town. Sam is from this neck of the woods and his hometown turned on a very moving (and very pink) homecoming celebration for his ride into town, with pink balloon lined streets, pink people, and a super celebration at the Savoia Hotel (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs), raising over $6000 in one night for Love Your Sister’s chosen benefactors: The Garvan Institute for Breast Cancer Research. On Thursday, February 13, Sam will complete his epic journey at Federation Square, Melbourne at 11:45 am. You are invited to Fed Square to welcome Sam home in (no doubt) a sea of pink and a flood of tears. Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, Sam and Connie would love to see you there. To find out more about the event like Love your Sister on Facebook. To donate to LYS go to loveyoursister.org. Onya Sam, we love you and we love your sister Connie! 8

Everybody cut footloose ...amongst the vines
LOVE IT, hate it, or completely ignore it, the 14th day of this month is usually met with either groans of passion or loathing. Valentine’s Day is a day drowning in hearts and flowers and brilliantly cheesy messages of love in the papers. Daylesford and Hepburn Springs are well loved towns for well loved up couples, and the roads to town definitely carry more vehicles than usual on Valentine’s Day. There are ‘Do Not Disturbs’ looped onto every bedroom door, and whitelinened tables for two are booked out weeks in advance. Now, sure, dinner is lovely to share with your partner, and perhaps Valentine’s Day makes it even more lovely-er-er but come on, you can go out for dinner 365 nights of the year… so how about doing something a little extra spesh for the extra spesh person in your life on this one particular loved up day of the year? Eastern Peake Vineyard and Winery (67 Pickfords Road Coghills Creek) is hosting an evening of open air cinema amongst the vines on Friday, February 14. It’s not strictly a couple thing, so BYO friends and family (or just your favourite-est person if you wish) and settle back under the stars with a bottle of Eastern Peake’s finest, a picnic and get all snuggly as they screen the 80s classic Footloose. BYO picnic blankie and something warm to wrap up in if it gets chilly, as well as pillows, chairs and stuff to get comfy on. Bring a picnic dinner if you’re feeling all organised, or food, wine (of course) and beer will also be available to purchase on the night. Bookings are essential, tickets are $15 per person, or $35 for a family pass. 20% of proceeds go to the CFA. (Because let’s face it the CFA peeps certainly deserve loads of love on Valentine’s Day.) (Love you CFA.) Arrive from 7pm for the screening at dusk. For more info and bookings call Jen: (ask her about the bus from Daylesford - yay! – limited seats so get onto it) 0458 617 025, or email Jennifer.sheahan@hotmail. com. For more info on the winery go to: easternpeake.com. au or find them on Facey. 10

The fine art
of vintage elegance
ELEGANCE. It’s something you just don’t see in the deli queue at the supermarket. It’s that quiet state of effortless beauty, which (annoyingly) often requires significant effort to accomplish. For some, elegance is genetic gift, but for us whom have not been blessed with the elegance gene, fear not, a state of high elegance can be achieved at The Art of Elegance Fair. Saturday, February 15, the Maldon Progress Hall, (Francis Street Maldon) will be transformed into a vintage department store, with traders creating themed spaces within the department store. Purchase vintage items and art or indulge in a decadent vintage high tea. Truly Madly Deeply will be playing live for a bit of added glamour as you shop into the evening. Dress in your elegant vintage best and really get into the spirit of the event. The Art of Elegance Fair is open 2pm-9pm. Entry is $5. More info call Monika 0437 384 543 or: ArtOfElegance Fair on Facebook.
A funny thing happened at the caravan park…
KIOSK is such a great word. We’ve often thought there should be one atop our country’s highest peak. C’mon, there is nothing not to like about Kiosk-sciuszko. Wes Snelling likes kiosks. Well, sort of. Wes grew up at the Kyneton Caravan Park. After school he worked at the kiosk observing the inhabitants of the park in their natural state. In 2009 Wes produced and performed Kiosk – a comedy and musical adventure about life at a caravan park. His show won a Moosehead Award, was nominated for 3 Green Room Awards and a Golden Gibbo, (wow) and now it is returning to its spiritual home for one show only at the Kyneton Caravan Park (back oval Kyneton Community Park) Saturday, February 15. This comedic feast will be supported by a fab band, Nola Poorboy will be serving deliciousness from their caravan (apt), there’ll be a bar, AND redskins galore. Tickets: $25/$20. More info and bookings go to: wessnelling.com 12

Treasure Hunters start your engines
YOU KNOW when you walk into someone’s house and they have this GREAT piece of furniture, an awesome ‘thing’ on a mantle, amazing original Danish kitchenware from the 60s and generally crazy-good vintage style (and you quietly hate them) and then you say “wow I love that where did you get it?” and they say “ oh I just found it at a market” and then you can’t quite contain your inner hate because YOU CAN NEVER FIND THAT SORT OF STUFF AT MARKETS? – yeah, that. Well, we would like to send out word to the vintagely challenged that we have found the market to end all markets, where you will find that unique piece of swoonable (covetable) awesomeness. The 6th Annual Maldon Antique and Collectables Fair will be held Saturday, February 15, and Sunday, February 16. In just a few short years this antique fair has earned itself a reputation as being completely super-duper. Antique buyers, frenzied collectors and sellers of the second-hand from all over Australia make the trek to Maldon to sell and hunt for treasures. This year there will be more than 120 stalls laden with genuine rare and valuable antiques, retro wonders and unique and quirky bits and bobs… (Salivating yet treasure hunters?) The Antique and Collectables Fair will be held at the Maldon Football Ground (Francis Street) and will offer more than one and a half kilometres of stalls. It’ll be all nice and level and grassy underfoot – therefore easy to negotiate when you’re loaded up with bags of trinkets, an industrial pendant lamp and a mint condition orange vinyl armchair from the 70s. Entry to the market is just $3 (there’s your first bargain of the day) and kids are free. The market is open 8am ‘til 5pm both days. For more info call Mark: 0414 244 842, or search Maldon Collectables on Facebook.

Lock up your wombats the Zombies are coming!
HEPBURN Wildlife Shelter rescues and assists sick and distressed wildlife from around the Hepburn Shire. At any given time there are about 100 animals in their care. Hepburn Wildlife Shelter is run completely on donations and love, so when it comes to the major fundraiser of the year you’d imagine that they’d do something warm and fuzzy and cute and cuddly wouldn’t you? Well… you’d be WRONG! The major fundraiser of the year for Hepburn Wildlife Shelter is a full-scale game of Zombie Chess. Saturday, February 15, the undead are coming to town. The entire floor of the Daylesford Town Hall will be transformed to a vast checkered battlefield. There are two teams competing: the White (the living) and the Black (the living dead). Two champion chess players will play a game of chess off to the side (out of the way of the blood and guts) and their moves will ultimately guide the Zombies and humans in their epic full-scale-blood-and-gore-battle to the death. Because the performance is based on a real game of chess, the outcome is unknown… but what is known is that zombies can not be dictated to, (nor trusted) and random acts of carnage are highly likely. Zombie Chess is presented by Zombiehire.com (professional zombies and humans trained in Zombie slaying) so there is no need to BYO pitchforks and brain-blasting weaponry. There are three seating options: Ringside: ($12, Up close and personal to the action - beware, it might get a bit smelly seated so close to the undead). Balcony: ($22, Safest seat in the house - FYI: zombies can’t fly). VIP Stage Seating: ($32, best seat in the house in the middle of the main stage) with a view of the chess champions’ strategy board. There are even limited tickets available to play on the White (alive human) team. ($52). All proceeds will be donated to the shelter. To witness this epic and hilarious zombie battle unfold, buy tickets at trybooking.com (search Zombie Chess), like Hepburn Wildlife Shelter, or Zombie Chess on Facebook. 16

ROD QUANTOCK is a living treasure. One of the forefathers of Australian comedy, and indeed one of the very first on the stand up scene in Melbourne, Rod has been delivering the laughs for 45 years. That’s a long time in one career. We hope he gets a gold watch when he reaches 50 years in comedy. (Or at the very least a rather large gold rubber chicken.) In more recent years, Rod has turned his eye, mind and sharp wit to politics and our planet. He has the ability to turn these particularly sensitive subjects into particularly large LOLs. His latest show Peak-A-Boo is all about our planet, as we surge ever closer to peak oil, peak water, peak people and peak EVERYTHING… and he is bringing this show to Daylesford for one night only, Wednesday, February 19, 8:30pm, at The Rex Theatre (47-53 Vincent Street). Rhubarb Rhubarb Rhubarb
we love the Kyneton Music Festival
THEY SAY you can hear rhubarb grow. There are recorded soundbites online of happy baby rhubarbs bursting forth from their corms. (Totally true – Google it.) And just like a field of happy rhubarb thriving in its well fertilised and watered field, the Kyneton Music Festival is growing and becoming more luscious and tasty (and noisy) before our eyes… (and happy ears.) This year the Kyneton Music Festival will be held from Friday February 28 - Sunday, March 2. The festival has only been in existence a few short years, and in that time the town has embraced the festival, they have welcomed some incredible musical artists, and it just keeps getting bigger and better… like a paddock of delicious crazy multiplying rhubarb. This year the festival presents over 40 bands across the weekend, including Eagle and the Worm, Cash Savage & the Last Drinks, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk, The Spoils, The Resignators, Saint Jude, Suzannah Espie and oodles more musical goodness. This year they have announced a limited number of camping sites at Kyneton Showgrounds (184 Mollison Street). The showgrounds are walking distance to all the venues making it a fab place to park your festival weary bod and rest your ears between gigs. Every conceivable stage and mic in town has been booked and is ready to roll out some of the finest music in the land on one jam packed weekend of musical awesomeness. All of the bands, venues and camping info are listed on the website: (kynetonmusicfestival.com.au) and you can keep up to the minute informed of festival happenings (additions, pics and good stuff) on their Facey page – search Kyneton Music Festival. Buy tickets on their website. (Above.) Friday day passes: $30 (adult) $15 (youth). Saturday day passes: $40 (adult) $20 (youth). Sunday Day passes: $30 (adult) $15 (youth) Full weekend festival passes: $65 (adult) $30 (youth). Campsites $40. (Booking fees apply). Current rhubarb price $4.95/kg. 22

Rub a Dub Dub
Your skin wants a tub
QUICK QUIZ… What’s the largest organ in your body? Nope, it’s not your brain Einstein, it’s your skin. And don’t we give it a hard time? We bake it, scrub it, graze it, wax it, and put it in all sorts of icky stuff. Poor skin. This time of year our exposed skin really cops it with the angry sun blasting its monster UV guns at us. (Back off sun, we’re just trying to top up our Vitamin D levels, give us a break!) Us human types have a tendency to do outside stuff when the sun is shining. We do garden stuff, beach stuff, and really rough stuff with our skin. And when we venture indoors we dry it out with air con. No wonder it gets grumpy with us sometimes… And when our skin is most sensitive, just about the worst thing we can do to it is to slather it in chemical nasties. After reading the chemical cocktails listed on regular skin‘care’ packaging, local lass Nat Hardy-Hurst decided to develop her own range of luscious skincare for her newborn bub. And voila! RubaDub was born. The RubaDub philosophy is ‘If you can’t eat it, then don’t rub it on your skin’ and whilst we don’t recommend dolloping the balm on your muesli in the morning, the food-based ingredients Nat uses are so wonderfully fresh and natural (and some home grown on the farm) you just about could. (…Think: local organic extra virgin olive oil, West Australian 550+ strength Manuka honey, and beautiful blends of herbs especially chosen for their healing properties. – Delish!) The RubaDub range includes soothing and healing body balms, soaps and moisturisers for everyone’s skin: from the most delicate newborn skin, to tough tradies’ skin, for people who can’t use soap, people prone to angry eczema, and perhaps those who have spent a wee bit too long in the sunshine (we wont tell your mum) or those who just wish to treat their precious epidermis to something deliciously handmade with love. RubaDub is available throughout Daylesford and region, and online at rubadub.com.au For a full pricelist and list of stockists check the RubaDub website. 24

Seriously Saucy
Sunday Sausages
ALL SAUSAGES are not created equal. There is no truer statement than that. And we’ve all been there, at a barbie, at a café, even at Bunnings feeling a little dusty on a Sunday morning… when you bite into a dud sausage you just wish you could take back that moment. But there are no returns on bad half eaten snags. And that cruel injustice is just something you have to live with. Fortunately, there are Sausage Artisans in our midst. There are bold Champions of Sausage, and highly skilled Sausage Gurus willing to share their carefully crafted deliciousness with us, the sausage adoring public. In Daylesford there is an iconic blue van, this blue van is well regarded as sausage nirvana. Affectionately known as the Blue Sausage Van (genius), it can be found at the weekly Sunday Market at Daylesford Station (18 Raglan Street/ Midland Highway). From 8:30am(ish) the sausages are sizzling on the hotplate. (You can smell them from Woodend.) The sausage menu includes Beef $5, Bratwurst $6, the local snag the Bullboar $6, as well as the hugely popular Duck Sausage $8. (Extras include sauerkraut, onion and cheese - 50 cents each) These sausages have a serious diehard loyal following. Especially the duck. Oh the duck. These little beauties are handmade by Salvatore Regional Butcher in Ballan (130 Inglis Street). They are 100% gourmet sausage goodness, stuffed full of high quality ingredients (= maximum deliciousness). Each sausage is served on a fresh bun baked early Sunday morning. Bring friends to try the sausagey goodness after a big Saturday night. They double as rescue sausages and you’re welcome to debrief on your weekend on the chairs next to the van, and regroup over one of the finest sausages in the land. Sausage therapy is free. Sausages are on ‘til 1pm-ish. Look for the retro blue van with the saucy ladies painted on the side (or just follow your nose). For market info go to dscr.com.au. The chicken
