it’s Daffodil Time!

2

AND just when you thought winter would be as long as that one when Elsa cracked it and walked up the mountain in Frozen… it breaks! The first hint of the seasons changing around here is when those cheery bulbs push out of the frozen earth and head skyward. Right about now they’re at their happy, yellow, noddy-headed best with daffodils and jonquils in fields, nature strips, and virtually everyone’s front yard. We plant them to give us a reminder of what colour the sun is. We haven’t seen it since May, so please bear with us while we are consumed with excitement about the change in season! Kyneton is a town totally enamoured with the happy bulb and celebrates the return of spring each year with the annual Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. This month the festival will be held Thursday, September 1, ‘til Sunday September 11. This year’s program is bursting with fantastic events, and there is truly something for everyone. Lovers of the visual and performing arts are well catered for with the Festival of One Act Plays, exhibitions and the Daffodil Art Prize, an arts trail and photography exhibition. The hilarious (sorry, serious) ferret races are on again, and the fun Dog Dash – a race for dogs of all shapes and sizes. There are flower shows, (of course – with daffodils front and centre) the town scarecrow display, wander through open gardens, or dance the night away at the glittering Daffodil Old-Time Ball. The Antique and Vintage Fair is on again, the Wine and Food Festival will be serving up the deliciousness at Degraves Mill, there’ll be performances, buskers, plays, bikes, and of course the finale – the Grand Parade on the last day of the festival; where bands, dancers, musicians, floats, vintage cars, kids and the whole town turns out to parade down the streets, then it all ends in a celebratory street fair with rides and more performances. It’s a fantastic way to welcome in spring – More info, including the full program and tix go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au or call 5422 2282.

Back on your Bike Sunshine!

6

YOU know who suffers most in winter? It’s not your pets, or your plants… it’s your beloved bike. Remember your ol’ treadlie?? It remembers you… it remembers happy days of cruising in the sunshine, but for months now it has been shacked up in the cold, dark, shed. Your bike hasn’t seen the light of day for months… It’s miserable, cold, flat, and in need of a bit of love. Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre is hosting three bicycle maintenance sessions at The ARC, Saturday, September 3, Saturday, September 10, and Saturday, September 17. Learn everything you need to about keeping your bike in ship-shape condition for the glorious long sunny riding days ahead. For more info and bookings (essential) call the Neighbourhood Centre, (5348 3569) or just drop in, at 13 Camp Street. The Bike Maintenance workshops will run at The ARC (Smith Street, Daylesford). and Thousands of Book Bargains

8

THE journey of a lifetime begins with the turning of a page. The annual Daylesford Primary School Book Fair is now in its 6th year, and it is the school’s major fundraiser. All the little page-turners at Daylesford Primary would love you to come along and buy a book or three to help support the school when they open the Book Fair doors: Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4. The Book Fair raises funds to enhance the school’s literacy program and the kids at the school have already benefitted from the efforts of previous years’ Book Fairs, with exciting and engaging literacy programs rolling out across the entire school. The Book Fair will be held in the school gymnasium 9am ‘til 5pm Saturday, and 10am ‘til 3pm Sunday. As always, there will be thousands upon thousands of high quality, pre-loved books to browse and buy. Book donations roll into the school all year ‘round, so even if you’ve trawled the trestles for book bargains in previous years, you will find thousands of new titles this year. Books are generously donated by members of the local community and gifted to the school by publishers. Prices start from $1!!!! (I know!! Crazy! – It’s a book bargain bonanza people!!!) Every genre possible is catered for, from cookbooks to crime, romance to reference, business to biographies, sci-fi to DIY, children’s books and so much more. If you’re here for the weekend come along and pick up a few books to take back to your accommodation and read by the open fire. Or if you’re local come along and refresh your bookshelves with a few (or 100!) new titles. You’ll never know what you’ll find! Every cent of funds raised goes back to the school’s literacy program to help develop their little learners’ life-long love of reading. For more information call the school 5348 2480, or like the DPS Book Fair Facebook page: facebook.com/ DaylesfordPrimarySchoolBookFair. LOSTMAGAZINE.COM.AU

Kyneton’s Got Talent You’d Better Believe It

BUSKERS can be a bit hit and miss… Some you’re happy to throw a few notes their way, others you’d rather throw them some money to make them stop. Saturday, September 3, as part of the Kyneton Daffodil Arts Festival, every kid with a trumpet and bloke with a banjo will take to the streets of Kyneton in a battle of the buskers to play their hearts out for your spare change and some decent cash prizes. From 10am-3pm the streets will be ringing with music. First prize is $250, there’s $100 for second and $50 for third prize. It’s basically going to be like Australia’s Got Talent for five solid hours on the streets of Kyneton – you never know which future superstar you’ll see! Fill your pockets with change and cheer your faves. While you’re wandering - take in the daffodil window displays and sample great food and coffee along the way. Before the spring craziness hits the garden get into Creswick Neighbourhood Centre: Saturday, September 3, 10am-4pm, for a day of garden structure weaving. Learn how to whip up beautiful natural garden structures for your summer plants to climb up. Weave a willow teepee and cloche that can be used as shelter or plant support (or for the kidlets to claim as a cubbyhouse). You’ll also learn how to make a willow border. It will be used in the community garden, and you’ll take home the skills to make your own. BYO secateurs, and any flexible climbers or vines from your garden to experiment with.
