Lothar Böttcher

Since 1994, when the Department of Glass & Design opened at the Tshwane University of Technology, Lothar Böttcher has been instrumental in giving glass a voice as an expressive medium.

After his studies in Pretoria, Böttcher specialised as Glasschleifer (cold worker, carving, cutting, and polishing glass) at the Staatliche Fachschule Weilburg-Hadamar, Germany.

In 2019 he completed Parts I & II as Master Glass Cutter (Glasveredlermeister) at the Staatliche Glasfachschule Zwiesel.

He regularly exhibits in national and international group shows. Most recently, he exhibited in the New Glass Now exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, United States and the Toyama Glass Art Museum, Japan.

Böttcher work is represented internationally in museums such as the Corning Museum of Glass (United States), Glasmuseum Frauenau (Germany), Glasmuseum Hadamar (Germany), Glasmuseum Lette (Germany), and Pretoria Art Museum (South Africa).

For the 2021 and 2022 Glass Art Society conferences, Böttcher copresented lectures with the international cold-worker collective Lathe Riders.

He is an active committee member of the Pretoria Arts Association. Over the past two decades, he has also curated several exhibitions promoting glass as a creative medium.

Piece of Cake

I love irony. Piece of Cake was difficult.

The circumstances at the time of making this work have been demanding. So many unexpected, personal life-changing twists and turns emerged during the winter of 2022. The future has become a multifaceted haze of uncertainty.

My attention was focused on creating a sculpture that encapsulates many techniques and disciplines of glass making and also tells a story with humour in my dark hours, giving me moments of catharsis and bliss.

Enjoy my Piece of Cake…
