- International Public Toilet Design Competition

Location : Trimabkeshwar, Maharashtra, India

Group Members : 2

Brief : ‘Toilet’ is treated off limit when it comes to architectural experimentation and innovation. This competition is an attempt to open the doors to discuss the type of space a designer would advise for public use. Artuminate launched this competition aiming to experiment with new, sustainable and innovative solutions not only for aesthetics but also for the technological aspects of toilets.

Description : ‘Tvarit’ that translates to ‘urgent’ in Marathi is a public toilet design project that aims to cater some of the urgent needs of a user. . The project also proposes a system where the edifice can have a greener footprint with minimal harm to the environment and at the same time also become an economic generator. A bio-digester tank is proposed that converts human waste to water and methane gas which can later be channelized and reused. Thus, the reused water can be used for flushes and for landscape irrigation. Apart from this, Installation of solar panel would not only help in having a self-sufficient electrical dependency but also contribute to the electrical grid, thus reducing the maintenance cost. The introduction of ATM machines and advertisement billboards will also act as financial generators that can contribute to maintenance costs. The edifice also responds well to the climatological context with maximum use of diffused natural light through northlight truss and natural ventilation through jali walls while keeping the privacy intact. The provision of ramps, double sway doors, dedicated toilets for specially-abled, low toilets for kids etc... are the evidence of the inclusivity factor of this design. .The toilets are also equipped with sensor taps, paddle dustbins, sanitary pad dispensers, water-efficient flushes, hand dryers etc. An open Wi-Fi facility is proposed in the Waiting Area.Tvarit promotes a clean and usable public space for sanitation under the National mission of Swachh Bharat.

The aim of the competition is to develop a place making project that will act as a Centre for change and community empowerment, in the heart of Dharavi, that will be wholly and truly owned by the people there. This will be a project that has the potential to become an umbrella institution for initiating change in Dharavi from within. The aim of the competition is to use Architecture as a tool to enable social upliftment and arrive at changes that will actually have a catalytic impact on Dharavi. It is imperative that the design learns from the efficiency and resourcefulness that the people of Dharavi exhibit. It should be able to act as an icon for the people living there and the rest of the city and should help the people realize their short- and Long-term goals. The design must be scalable, moldable and flexible in use and must remain in use at all times.

Description :

Like a rekindled flame in a patchwork house deep in Dharavi, Re-Dhara (we) is the medium for the revival of olden cultures in lasting milieus. As a recreation of the lost swampy islands of Dharavi, the community center hosts a variety of spaces for the upgradation of the community. From temporary galleries tented under the stilts, to theatres on the moundscape, to flexible spaces riddled across, Re-Dhara (we) is designed to showcase its ambivalent planning with the spaces on terraced slabs. The site creates opportunities by/for itself through the many spaces and landscape within. Infact, it seeks to engineer the very profession of recycling, as a physical manifestation of the architecture, that is, the junk gabion walls. The walls are nestled be tween the amoebic slabs as a reflection of the organic attitude of Dharavi’s architecture, also a construction by the people of Dhar- avi themselves. The spaces within are placed in conjunction either with the staircase within, or the terraces overlooking the city of Mumbai. Arraying across the spaces to the staircase to the landscape, it is all tied together with the earthed ramp circling like a literal ‘dhara’ and the coconut trees threading through. In its true essence, one can say that Re-Dhara(we) is and will be a spliting consequence of the set tenets of the- REuse of scraps, REcycling of the junk, REcreation of spaces, Renewal of nature and Rejuvenation of the community.

The project is situated in the old town of Dhubri, in Assam’s westernmost corner, known as the “Land of Rivers.” To empower and educate women of all ages in Dhubri, the project was conceived, with a girl-centric design incorporated for this purpose. The building design considers the climate of Dhubri, with the vertical axis along the north influencing the mass design. What sets the project apart is its inclusion of various activities for women and its capacity to support flood victims during crises. The staggered classroom mass encourages children to engage in way-finding activities and games. The project’s future prospects include raising awareness about education in every household, making it a unique initiative. A semi-open play area has been introduced that offers glimpses of the sky and creates vibrant patterns on the ground. The rainwater pods resemble a tree trunk, serving as a playful element for children. Colorful glass panels on the staircase cast shadows of various shapes, subtly educating students about different shapes. A wall displaying challenging mathematical tables, with recurring exposure to the wall, helps children remember them subconsciously. The walls also feature engaging games like the abacus wall and stick wall. Elements like ramp and different types of facade and opening types include playful engagement. During breaks, mothers can participate in games with their children, fostering a bond between them. Overall, it provides a fun experience for everyone involved.
