Legislation around the world requires combustion engines to operate cleaner, quieter and with lower emissions, whilst customers expect improved performance, economy and refinement. Developing engines to meet these requirements necessitates engine optimisation, research into combustion performance and new engine technologies. Traditionally, testing new camshaft profiles to change valve timing is expensive and time consuming as each new camshaft has to be designed, manufactured and installed each time.


THE LOTUS ACTIVE VALVE (AVT™) SYSTEM ADDRESSES THESE ISSUES... Lotus AVT is a fully variable hydraulically operated valve actuation system which empowers our clients with a tool for faster research and development of new engine technologies and combustion performance. The Lotus Active Valve Train system is renowned for its market leading accuracy and repeatability. It is already in use by leading OEMs in US, Europe and Japan. AVT eliminates the need to change hardware, dramatically speeding up development times and saving costs. AVT replaces the camshaft with a hydraulically operated valve system that can simulate an extensive, used definable range of valve lift profiles and timing from two to eight stroke combustion cycles in real time. Many hydraulic valve actuation systems have a trade off between speed and accuracy. The new Lotus system now operates up to 8,000 rpm whilst maintaining accuracy of results and quality of data for which AVT is renowned. The AVT system is scalable from single cylinder gasoline engines to heavy duty diesel engines.

Lotus can offer existing AVT users an upgrade path to the latest specification with minimal downtime. New clients are provided with a complete turnkey solution integrated with your existing research engine or with our own single cylinder engines.
