because MALL is a four letter word... Here, at Got Craft?, we are super excited for the upcoming holiday season and we have so much to celebrate. If you haven’t already heard the news, Got Craft? will be popping up this December in the Pipe Shop Building at the Shipyards in North Vancouver. This spectacular heritage building on the City’s waterfront will play host to food carts, free hands-on workshops, and more than 80 handmade vendors including 25% first time Got Craft? vendors – Coral and Cloud, The Chocolate General Store, and Kiriki Press. For those that like to create, The Rice Babies will be hosting a mini holiday piñata workshop and District Dogs Designs will have their tabletop press for you to try your hand at letterpress. Spool of Thread will also be returning with a new sewing project for you to make. Check out the workshop page for full details. And finally, I want to say a huge thank you to all of our vendors, attendees, volunteers, and sponsors. Got Craft? would not exist without you. We’re celebrating our 18th show in Vancouver this December and we are grateful for the community support we received over the years. We strive to stay true to our vision by curating an indie-craft marketplace that showcases some of the best Canadian made goods. See you the weekend of December 12th and 13th! Best, Andrea + Robert

How did you get into Letterpress? What drove your desire to begin District Dog Designs? It all started with a linocut carving we did of our French Bulldog and the desire to produce a quality print from it. After doing a little research on printing techniques, the letterpress method attracted us the most. The opportunity to cultivate a creative outlet in letterpress was too

In terms of being motivated, every day to create, explore, and grow your business, what inspires you? Our day jobs somewhat inspire us to create daily! Letterpress printing is often quite messy. It requires an infinite amount of attention to detail and the craft in itself is a study in humility and persistence, but the output is truly satisfying. There is nothing better than a product that you can not only see, but touch as well. We want to provide people with a little bit of a tangible experience. People who genuinely like our creations, and people who consider handmade products still valuable… that’s who we print for. Is there a designer or brand with whom you’d love to collaborate? There are a lot of designers out there that we admire! Bring us your ideas! We would love to collaborate! What advice would you give someone who is looking to launch their own business? - Start small, start lean, start from home. - Build something great and word-of-mouth will get it out there. - Get inspiring family members and friends involved. - In the beginning forget about numbers, concentrate on making your clients happy and providing them with something of value. - Stop striving for perfection; it’ll prevent you from finishing anything. - And finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions from experts in the field.

When I first moved to Vancouver, I took a letterpress class, igniting my passion for letterpress and being hands-on to create. Do you offer classes too? We do! We offer both letterpress printing and linocut in collaboration with London Fields Shoppe! Check our website for course information and to register. businesses pushing an aesthetic and a high quality idea. The first Got Craft? Started in 2007 with 20 vendors, and is now the exhibition of over 75 small producers, with an annual attendance of over 5000. With the success of the show under their belt, Andrea and Robert decided to take on a storefront, to constantly show a handful of Got Craft? vendors as well as take on small businesses from America, throughout Canada, and a handful from the UK. The resulting shop, after over a year of delays and gut-wrenching complications, is downright gorgeous, with high ceilings, well worn hardwood floors, and shelves upon shelves that are filled with things you weren’t certain you needed before, from the aforementioned enamelware (the pie plates!) to local infused honey (the cardamom infused is too good for words) to paper goods, (like swoon-worthy candy coloured notebooks), and vintage jars and vases. It could easily be described as a gift-shop, but that would undercut its devoted base of locals that decorate their apartments with their springtime coloured Melamine cutlery, or themselves with the selection of surprisingly affordable jewelry. Add in the classes, small entrepreneurs showing how to make everything from taxidermy animals to minimalist and organic wreaths, it’s a shop that’s hard to pop in and not buy something for yourself. A few visits in, and you’ll find yourself slowly becoming that irritating person with the apartment people have to comment on.
