A New Twist on Holiday Giving

A

s the holiday season begins, we are inundated with a constant influx of marketing for the dream gift suggestions for your special someone. Marketing campaigns from huge companies pierce our collective consciousness with catchy slogans like “Every kids begins with K”, “Diamonds are forever”, “Maybe she was born with it”, “There are some things money can’t buy, for everything else there’s MasterCard”, “Just Do It”, “Because you’re worth it”. I invite you to stop and think about the people you are gifting this year. Do they really want or need more stuff? Are there specific things they want?

If you aren’t sure, consider doing something different this year. In my family, we love the saying, “Experiences over things”. Can you have an experience with your loved ones and make a new memory, instead of buying another item that will be lost and forgotten in a house full of stuff? Go on a family outing or adventure. Plan a surprise day trip. Go see a local performance or show! Buying for kids? Try purchasing an annual pass to fun places, like the aquarium, children’s museum, the zoo or Georgia State Parks. Or get gift cards to the movies, bowling center or skating rink.

Buying for adults? Try choosing an experience they would love. You can get gift cards to a shooting range or driving experience. Know a couple who would love dinner and a movie? Give them gift cards and a babysitting voucher instead of a new shirt, candle or barbecue set. The holidays can be extremely taxing for ladies. Often they are responsible for organizing the parties, planning the meals, buying and wrapping the gifts. Most women crave time to relax and restore. A spa gift certificate is perfect. She can schedule a massage, spa service or facial and get the much needed zen time to unwind and recharge. Another idea is to contribute to a local charity as a Christmas gift. There are many programs that offer options to adopt a child or family for their holiday needs. Supply a meal, buy gifts for needy kids, volunteer together at a local nonprofit. Keep the spirit alive in your heart this season with some of these ideas. Don’t let the pressure of the holidays cause stress. Relish in joy, create happy memories and enjoy each moment! HUMANE SOCIETY OF FORSYTH COUNTY

What About Me? Hi Foco people! Our loved ones at the HSFC are trying their hardest to get the both of us adopted by Christmas, so this month’s feature should be called, “What About Us?” You see, we are now the longest residents at the shelter. It seems as if no one wants either one of us. So, I am here to tell you about our wonderfulness! First, let me introduce to you Sissy the cat! She has been here for over 315 days! She was originally picked up by Animal Control but no one ever came for her. She is only 2 years old! Sissy loves to play with toys, esp. toy mice! She loves to snuggle with folks, but it has to be on her terms. She does not like being held or restrained. She is litter box trained and keeps herself well-groomed. The other day, Sissy told me that although she gets along with other cats, she would love to be an only child! She has been through a lot, so who can blame her? Here is my story. My name is Angela and I'm a 1 year old Border Collie mix. I have been at the HSFC for over 102 days! I, too, was at Animal Control and my owners never came for me. I have a lot of energy so I would love a big backyard to play in! I am awesome on a leash and I love to be loved and cuddled! Here is my secret, but don’t tell Sissy! I really don’t like cats! I do like older children and I’m okay with most other dogs but, I would not mind being an only child! Well, that’s about all! Is there anyone who wants to adopt us? Please? We each need a home for Christmas! Here is our info!

PRP vs

for

Wrinkles

M

ost of us are familiar with Botox injections for cosmetic procedures. With Botox, the Botulinum A bacteria is diluted and injected into the facial muscles to cause temporary paralysis which decreases wrinkling of the skin. However, there can be many side effects from receiving a Botox injection including nausea, difficulty speaking, headaches and permanent muscle damage. Some patients have suffered from eyelid drooping after having Botox injected near the eyes. The Botulinum bacteria spread out after being injected and have been shown to migrate to the brain stem which can cause a myriad of neurological symptoms. Ironically, Botox injections can speed up the aging process of the muscles, eventually making you look older. Today’s rage in facial care, as demonstrated by the Kardashians, is the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to help regenerate collagen and blood vessels. So

why are so many men and women opting for PRP instead of Botox? PRP has been used in the medical profession for over 30 years to help heal skin quicker and prevent scarring. More recently it has been used with both amateur and professional athletes, to help speed up the healing of damaged joints. PRP is separated from your own blood, eliminating the chance of contracting any diseases and has been shown to stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms to help rebuild damaged collagen. Essentially, PRP regenerates the damaged, aging tissues instead of just temporarily masking the wrinkles. However, the results are not instantaneous while Botox results occur within minutes. There is always a chance of temporary bruising with both PRP and Botox injections and you should always have a qualified, well-trained doctor, Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant perform the procedure. If you or someone you know has any questions about PRP, please call Dr. Joe McNamara at 678-884-9488.

Dear Harper,

Dear Harper,

I am so excited as the time gets near for my brother and his family to make their annual trip home to spend the holidays. He and his family live across the country so this is usually the only time we get to visit.

The holidays are here and with the traditional family dinner get-together comes a problem. Our two children (ages 25 and 27) don’t like each other. It is a rarity that they have contact during the year. This makes for such a stressful holiday meal; my wife and I would just prefer to not have them. What should I say to explain to both of them that we will no longer host holiday “family” dinners? I'm afraid whichever we talk to first or even if it is at the same time, one will say “Well, I will come for Thanksgiving and she can come for Christmas this year”.

Unfortunately, he called me yesterday to say that this will be the last Christmas he and his wife and my two nephews will be coming for the holidays. He told me he has been having an affair and wants to leave his marriage right after the New Year. I want them here but feel like such a liar not saying anything, but I want to be supportive to my brother. Should I tell him not to come?

Parents Too Stressed by Holidays

Trying To Be Supportive

Dear Stressed by Holidays,

Dear Supportive,

Your “children” are adults! They should be able to put their differences aside two nights out of the year for your sake. If that statement is made, tell them, “No. This would only remind us that only half of you are here and that really saddens us.” Holidays are supposed to be happy times. We have made the decision to spend our holidays elsewhere.

I know it is hard being the only one in the family to know his secret. But by confessing to you, he is showing you he trusts and needs you. Once his secret becomes real, he is going to leave a heartbreaking mess. He will need you and the family to support him and his boys. Let him and your family have this one “perfect” holiday. Try to forget what you know and enjoy this untroubled time together. After all, tomorrow is another day!

The Christmas Tree

When we get older the days are long and the years are short. Well, these stories are of a time in everyone’s life when the days were short, and the years lasted FOREVER! Christmas took forever to come. Remember? (Excerpt from Growing Up in Ducktown, Dr. Linda Ledbetter)

t was the Saturday after Thanksgiving and I was five years old. It was a little early for a live tree, but; believe me, I had been nagging to get one for a week. My parents, especially my Dad, just gave into the inevitable. We loaded up the car and went to Buckhead to Weinstock Florist. Back in those days not everyone sold live trees. You couldn’t find a tree lot short of Atlanta. My parents always went to this huge, from my perspective, nursery and florist just north of downtown. I loved it! Even the extraordinary long drive did not put me to sleep. I was too excited. As the florist came into view, I could see the Christmas lights. Back then, no one put up Christmas lights until the day after Thanksgiving, so this was the treat I expected. There were live beautiful trees everywhere. They all seemed huge as I was very small. I ran around the lot while Mother mad her usual warning to my sisters, “Watch Linda or she’ll get lost”. I touched them all. Then Mother said I could pick the tree. Never had I got to pick the tree. Boy, was I picky! They were all perfect in the eyes of a five-year-old. Then I noticed that Mother was looking at a beautiful tree covered in white stuff. It looked like snow. Having lived in Georgia all my life, I had seen very little snow. I loved this tree. That was it! I remember Mother and Daddy saying the snow might fall off and ruin the carpet. It might be more flammable, etc. Anyway, Mother must have liked the tree because we got it. I was beside myself with joy. The man at the florist put the tree on top of our car and we were off with our treasure. When we got home, the tree had to be cut to fit the tree holder and I was so impatient. I was sleepy, but no way was I going to sleep before that tree was set up. In the process of setting up the tree, Mother found a little plastic bag with a note inside. She read it to Daddy. It was from a young man in Canada who helped cut down trees for sale in the United States. I did not know where Canada was, but I knew it was a long way away and it

I

snowed there. The note asked simply for Christmas gifts. I do not know if they were for him or his family. This was all the information my five-year-old brain ingested. I asked Mother why the young man did not simply ask Santa Clause as I did. She never really answered me, but we were on a quest to send gifts. To this young person. I liked this quest. I really did not know why, but I felt important being a small part of it. I remember packaging the things we sent, and most were warm clothing. That to me was not a great Christmas present, so a toy and candy had to be included. When Mother went to mail the package, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I, a little kid who never paid for gifts, who did not know the person, and did not really understand why this person needed our gifts, felt a supreme sense of worth. I have never forgotten that feeling to this day. It is what Christmas is all about. I did not know that then, but I know it now. So, this Christmas, help someone who needs it. Make your small children a part of it. Don’t think they won’t remember it or internalize the experience. It will make them a much better adult. I thank my parents, who are gone from me now, for all the wonderful Christmas memories. They were great people, great parents, and good Christians. Remember, memories are made every Christmas and who know how many Christmases we have left. Dr. Linda Ledbetter is currently serving on the Cumming City Council. As a retired educator, former county commissioner, and senior advocate, Linda wishes to conserve and protect our heritage. Born in Forsyth County, she is a UGA graduate and mother of three, Bart Hammond, Alisa Stone Dennis and William Allen Stone III.

Sheriff For A Day

A

t this year’s Bark & Boogie Ball, benefitting the Humane Society of Forsyth County, our very own Sheriff Ron Freeman volunteered to be a “live auction item!” This was quite the big hit! Two generous donors won the title of “Sheriff for a Day.”

Ann-Margaret Victor Johnston & Diane Rucker had the experience of a lifetime. Sheriff Freeman filled their special day with many memorable moments. First, there was a morning briefing, followed by a tour of the Courthouse by LT. Allan Frampton. The two women then had the honor to watch the swearing in of a new deputy. They also got to meet Boo Berry. She is a certified therapy dog for victims or witnesses of crimes, mostly those involving children. Detective Roe is her handler/ daddy. This was followed by a tour of the FoCo Jail led by Maj. Deeann Cash. Of course, the opportunity to lock up Ann-Margaret & Diane, was pounced upon! It was noted that our County Jail has to be one of the best around. While at the jail, these dog loving ladies spent some time with 1st LT. Tom Moore who oversees the program “Pups With Purpose.” This program takes dogs from the Forsyth County Animal Shelter and brings them into the jail to work with and be trained by selected inmates. Diane’s husband, Scot Rucker, is the one who trains both the inmates & the dogs. Through this program that Sheriff Ron Freeman initiated, many lives, both human & dogs, have been forever changed. At the conclusion of the jail tour, Sheriff Freeman escorted Ann-Margaret and Diane over to Lanier Tech for a wonderful lunch with the South Forsyth Rotary Club. Upon finishing lunch, the ladies then experienced a Ride-Along, shooting time at the range, and K9 Bite & Scent work. An amazing day was had by all! Thank you to Sheriff Ron Freeman, Ann-Margaret Victor Johnston, & Diane Rucker for raising funds for the HSFC. Sheriff Ron, you will forever be an “Auction Item!”

FoCo Woman wants to give a special thank you to Sheriff Ron Freeman and all the staff involved in making this event happen. We all learned so very much and had an absolute blast. Everyone was kind, generous and so very informative. Forsyth County is so blessed to have such an amazing group of men and women protecting us.

HELPING SENIORS GRANT PROGRAM Age Well Forsyth has been busy this month as several requests have come to fruition. The Senior Center at Charles Place will soon receive a new industrial dishwasher and flatware for the daily dining there. They will also have new dishes soon and if the grant is matching, Age Well will match it. The senior grant program has given various grants to individuals for the last three quarters. The new ride share program is being funded by the county but Age Well stands ready to help. In this program, a senior can get a ride to the doctor on Uber or Lyft for a very small amount. The rest is supplemented by the county. We commend the county for this needed gift. Hopefully this works as Age Well has been instrumental in voicing a need for seniors. Age Well is providing fruit and yogurt for the morning meal at Charles Place to supplement the donated food. Age Well provided pies for the Thanksgiving meal at Sexton Hall and one of the board members provided pies to Charles Place. Two of our board members provide small gifts to all 190 Meals on Wheels participants every holiday. They do this at their own expense. We truly have a wonderful group of people concerned with our elderly. In conclusion, if you know a senior in need, contact Age Well at 404-245-7949 or pick up a grant application from at a senior center. We are ready to help.

Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB) became the main local resource for household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal and recycling in November of 2004 with their first bi-annual electronics recycling event. Paint was added to the event in the fall of 2016 and the gallons of paint collected continues to grow at steam pace. In May of 2019 KFCB partnered with The City of Cumming and Forsyth County Government to offer their first true HHW collection event which by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) definition includes any unwanted household products that contain corrosive, ignitable, toxic, or reactive ingredients.

“solidify or evaporate” it. Once the waste is in a solid or dry state it can be placed in with regular household trash for disposal. For detailed instructions visit KeepForsythCountyBeautiful.org Here are a few additional options for specific items:

• The Forsyth County Convenience Centers accept tires, electronics, paint, batteries, used motor oil and anti-freeze – some fees apply. • Medication can be taken to the North or South Precinct of the Forsyth County Sherriff’s Office. • Old fire extinguishers can be used to hold a hands-on fire safety class. Many people have never used a fire extinguisher and knowing what to expect can be very helpful in the case of a real emergency. • Batteries Plus stores accept light bulbs and batteries – a fee may apply. For more information and to find out about the next KFCB Household Hazardous Waste Event, please visit our website:

1. Corrosive: it can damage human tissue. 2. Ignitable: it can catch fire. 3. Toxic: causes injury or death if it’s swallowed, inhaled or absorbed. 4. Reactive: it can cause an explosion. Examples of common HHW include paints, cleaners, oils, fuels, batteries, fluorescent or HID light bulbs, herbicides and pesticides. Additionally, some electronics fall into the category of HHW because they contain materials such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, or brominated flame retardants. The most common DIY alternative for liquid HHW is to

Let’s make sure to all take some time and appreciate all the achievements made over the past year and all the goals and milestones we hope to surpass in the year to come. As you celebrate with your loved ones this month, it is important to remember how truly blessed we are to live in such a wonderful county. This past year FoCo Woman has been so fortunate to meet, work, volunteer and get to know the people of Forsyth County. If it had not been for so many open-hearted people, my dream may still be in my mind and not actually printed five times. People often ask, “How to you find articles for your magazine?” There is never a shortage of information, heartwarming events, nonprofits making life better, our county leaders and Sheriff’s department that are constantly making Forsyth County the best place to live.

My biggest goal this season is to engage with and support those in need now and throughout the year. We are blessed with an abundance of worthwhile organizations to help. We encourage you to join us in a community-giving season. If you have a chance and see a child’s or person’s name on a tree or you can drop off food, there are so many ways to give back. If you need help locating a place to devote your time, efforts and resources, let us know, we’d be happy to help connect you with a place that serves your heart.

Forsyth County is committed to providing and maintaining the most efficient, customer service-oriented county government possible. Our county will be an innovative and strategic leader in providing essential and effective public services in a fiscally prudent and professional manner. I can not believe that 2019 is almost over. Once the holiday season begins it seems we will be ringing in the New Year 2020. The year 2020 brings the new United States Census. If you do nothing else, resolve to be counted. Every 10 years a complete count is taken of all residents in the United States. The Census is used for many purposes. Some are: 1. Redistricting at the national, state and local level. 2. Community Planning, including land use and transportation projects. 3. Distribution of billions of dollars in federal and state funds. 4. Analysis of local demographic and economic trends. Every home will have received an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census by one of three ways. This will happen by April 1, 2020. You can go online, by phone or by mail. It only takes a few minutes to ensure you are counted so please do so. This holiday season, I am asking you to Give the Gift of a Nutritious Meal. Meals are an urgent need and meal certificates are available for purchase at all the three Forsyth County Senior Services locations. The catered meals will be delivered by friendly volunteers through the Meals on Wheels program, providing much needed visits and safety checks. The cost for a holiday meal gift certificate is $4 for one day, $20 for one week, $85 for one month and $1,000 for an entire year. Best wishes for a safe and happy Holiday Season and a very Happy 2020!
