FOOD+DRINK Bringing the Family Together

at the Dinner Table By NewsUSA

If you are like most families, the stress of having kids and maintaining hectic schedules, can heat up the happiest of households in no time -- especially when it comes to trying to decide what to have for dinner. However, with a little planning and some cooperation, even the busiest family can find time to sit down and enjoy a meal together. The following tips will give you an idea of how you can streamline the dinner process, while squeezing in some much-needed family time: • Get the whole household involved. Not only on chores like washing and drying dishes, but on tasting and choosing the menus. • Schedule a mock cooking class. If you want to get family members involved, make time on a weekend for a prepping and cooking session, where everyone can share knife skills, recipes, and other culinary lessons.

• Strive for leftovers. Whoever is cooking can make extra of anything that’s a hit with family members and store leftovers in the fridge or freezer. Two roasted chickens (instead of one) are great for hot or cold sandwiches, soup, salad, and great filler for fajitas or burritos.

• Do a taste test. Let’s face it, every family has that one member who’s finicky. To combat that, have them weigh in for taste tests. This way, you can plan to cook that dish in bulk.

ARTS+CULTURE 4th Annual Broomfield Brain Trust

2020 Trivia Challenge The 4th Annual Broomfield Brain Trust 2020 Trivia Challenge is again coming to The Chateaux at Fox Meadows on Friday, February 21st. Last year, twenty-six teams of six competed for the title of Smartest Brains in Broomfield and the new coveted electronic Broomfield Brain Trust trophy. How tough was the competition last year? The winners beat out the second place team by only one point. The competition was so close that the top three teams finished only three points apart. With over two hundred contestants and volunteers, The Chateaux was abuzz with the excitement of the trivia topics such as: The Final Frontier; Odd State Facts; The Musical Ensemble; and Herbs and Spices, which kept all guessing. This year, there will be a whole new set of topics and questions. Everyone savored pizza and salad from iPIE; then emcee Bruce Erley of Creative Strategies Group kept the crowd at the top of their game for eight rounds of 10 questions. Team monikers like Municipal Minions, Chamber Champs, Danger Zone, Gen X-n-Z, Red Hot Trivia Peppers, School House Rockers, and Emerald Fire that were sponsored by local businesses, charities and individuals and the Chateaux’s festive venue helped enhance the party atmosphere. The Old Guys with Attitude team representing the Kiwanis Club of the Foothills from Boulder proved to be the team to beat - nudging out the others’ scores. Second place went to the team that finished first in 2017, the GHNI team representing Global Hope Network, International and third place went to last year’s winner, GI Joes and Janes representing Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum.

The Rotary Club of Broomfield Crossing sponsors and staffs this event each year and the proceeds from the team entry donations benefit charities such as: End Polio Now; Emerald Elementary School, Hope House of Colorado; Stargate School; FRIENDS of Broomfield, A Precious Child and Broomfield Community Foundation. Contact the Broomfield Brain Trust Boss, Jeff Taylor at taylorx3@comcast.net or 970-331-2375 to reserve your table now. Earliest reservations get best seating and there is a space limitation of thirty tables.

Seas the Night Gala A Precious Child’s biggest event of the year, Seas the Night Gala, will be held April 4, 2020, from 5pm until midnight at the Omni Interlocken Resort. The event features a seated dinner, live and silent auctions, casino games, dancing and live music. To RSVP by March 21, and purchase tickets, visit: https:// apreciouschild.org/event/gala/. “This event brings together many members of our community and it’s a fun way to help children in need live up to their full potential,” said Carina Martin, CEO and Founder of A Precious Child. “The proceeds of this popular annual event help families and children who may be victims of child abuse or neglect, or those dealing with divorce, job loss, economic hardship, a death in the family or homelessness.” Donations of gently used clothing, coats, shoes, toiletries, home goods, baby gear, diapers, backpacks, school supplies, computers and sports equipment help a child to grow up with the opportunities and resources to thrive. A Precious Child envisions a future where every child grows up to be a secure, self-reliant, contributing member of their community. Due to the generosity of individual, corporate, and community volunteers, as well as monetary donations, A Precious Child is able to provide the services and programs needed to help families give their children family stability, academic success and social and emotional well-being.

HEALTH+WELLNESS Are You Fully Alive?

Tips for Living a Full Life By NewsUSA

You don’t have to lack a pulse or crave human flesh to go throughout your life like a zombie. The debilitating effects of depression assault 15 million Americans these days. But depression isn’t the only issue preventing adults from feeling content each day -- perhaps it’s a stagnant job, poor health, a loss of faith or countless other factors. Author, comedian and keynote speaker Ken Davis was a member of the walking dead for years before he realized he was living an unfulfilled life -- mentally, physically and spiritually. “This idea of living fully alive is not some thrill-seeking quest. It doesn’t require leaping from an airplane or riding bicycles at breakneck speeds or jumping a log cabin on skis,” says Davis. “I’ve done all that. What I longed for was to experience that sense of adventure in my everyday life. Shouldn’t we feel some of the excitement that comes from jumping off a fifty-foot cliff when we jump out of bed?” Ideally, yes. But as adults get caught up in the stressors of daily life -work, commuting, bills -- it’s easy to lose sight of the many components that interact to form a meaningful, healthy life. “The very nature of the words ‘fully alive’ implies completeness,” Davis says. “We are physical, social, mental and spiritual beings. To ignore any aspect

of our humanity is to be only partially alive. I’m not interested in partial life any more than I’m interested in partial plates or premature death.” Davis shared his epiphany and desire to reinvigorate life in his newest book, “Fully Alive: A Journey That Will Change Your Life.” Here’s a snapshot of the advice Davis offers to his readers: Kick guilt to the curb, and experience real freedom. Be active for an hour a day, and find ways to push your body to its limit several times in that hour. Develop spirituality in your life, whether through prayer, meditation, reading, connecting with nature or attending a religious service. See what else Davis can teach you at www.fullyalivebook.com.

HOME

7 Steps to Plan a Remodel By Family Features

Remodeling your home can be one of the most exciting projects to undertake. Planning and setting realistic expectations are critical in ensuring your project goes as smoothly as possible. Consider these steps from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) before you get started: 1. Determine your goals and needs. If you’re looking to increase resale value, consider the upgrades that can have the highest impact when going to market. If remodeling can make for a more comfortable space, create a list of “must-haves” and “nice-tohaves” then evaluate what’s feasible. 2. Get inspired. Whether watching home improvement shows or browsing the internet, finding photos of styles and looks you admire can be beneficial when sharing your vision with a remodeling contractor. 3. Understand your budget. Be sure to build in a contingency fund for unforeseen expenses. Project expenses should factor in the cost of products, labor and project management. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, be sure to get a written estimate and

scope of work once you’ve selected a contractor. 4. Determine timing. Build in additional time as a buffer for unexpected delays and recognize remodeling contractors typically have long lead times and may require flexibility to deliver optimal results. 5. Find a contractor you trust. While some of the best references may come from neighbors, friends or family members, a trade association like NARI can help with its online “Find a Remodeler” tool. Make sure any contractor you’re considering has sufficient relevant experience, as well as liability insurance. 6. Check references. You can never be too careful when choosing who to work with. Be sure to

follow up on references, read reviews online and even check out the work of any remodelers you’re considering hiring, if possible. 7. Prepare for the process. Because it can be especially stressful when redoing the kitchen or an essential bathroom, you’ll probably need to consider a backup plan or other arrangements throughout the duration of the project. Find more tips for planning a remodel at RemodelingDoneRight.com.

FURRY FRIENDS 5 Tips for Keeping

Your Dog More Active By BPT

Face it, getting enough exercise is tough for everyone, and it’s certainly true when it comes to our pets. Most dogs need more exercise than they’re getting, especially during the colder months when we all prefer to stay indoors. Consult your veterinarian for guidelines about how much exercise your dog should be getting to stay in top condition, then make a plan to add more pep to your dog’s step.

What are the best ways to keep your pup - and you - active and moving? 1. Vary Your Walking Route When you’re walking your dog, switch up the route now and then to keep it more interesting for both of you. Work on adding a few minutes or a couple of extra blocks to your walk any chance you get.

2. Pick Up the Pace Rather than just taking a leisurely stroll, walk with purpose, like you’re trying to get somewhere. This will make it a more heart-healthy workout for the both of you.

3. Bring Friends Along

Petmate can keep your dog engaged and excited to run and fetch for a lively, active play session that will be fun for both of you.

You’re more likely to enjoy and stick with regular walking dates if you can make some of your walks into a social occasion, whether your friends also have dogs or not.

5. Exercise Their Brains Research your dog’s breed to discover what stimulus they are most likely to respond to, so you can find new toys and activities your dog will love. Examples might be hide-and-seek games, having them use their sense of smell to find treats, creating an obstacle course in your yard or chasing (non-toxic) bubbles.

4. Make Time for Active Play In addition to walking every day, mix it up! Spend a little extra time encouraging active play like a good game of fetch with your dog. Not good at throwing? No worries - a toy like Chuckit! launcher from

People love to procrastinate, especially when they're dealing with topics that make them uncomfortable. As a result, estate planning can be a task that people tend to put off. Often they wait until they retire or are told they have a terminal illness or Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, procrastinating can raise significant questions as to your intent regarding your instructions after death. It adds uncertainty when you have not made amendments to your estate plan for many years, and then make significant changes just prior to your death or disability. Death bed changes are often contested in court. Influence by family members, diminished mental capacity, and the influence of medications on an individual's capacity all raise questions about the last-minute change, or preparation of an estate plan. This can be avoided by putting an estate plan in place early and reviewing it regularly to make sure that it continues to meet your goals. It can also help remind you of your well thought out intent when you are struggling late in life and are encouraged by others to make changes. Many problems can be avoided by planning early, reviewing and updating your plan often, and properly documenting your intent. Your family is less likely to fight over your wishes and they will continue to have family gatherings and meaningful relationships after your death. If you would like to learn more about estate planning, attend one of our complimentary workshops.
