FOOD+DRINK Home Bartending:
Your Guide to the Perfect Drink By BPT
When Stacie Grissom of Garden Cocktails has folks over to her apartment, she makes sure to offer guests something to drink before they can even get through the door. She built her brand on the notion that anyone can make gorgeous and tasty alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks right at home. Below, you’ll find some tips and tricks she has curated to help make anyone’s home bartending experience a little more seamless. 1. Educate Yourself Consider a beginner’s course in bartending, read articles online or even watch some YouTube videos. These materials are intended to give you the basic knowledge of various tools, lingo and more to help you find your way around your home bar, as well as equip you with the confidence to serve!
2. Ice Really Does Make a Difference Not only do the large, clear ice spheres look beautiful, they melt slowly to help keep drinks chilled longer without diluting. LG’s InstaView is the only refrigerator that automatically makes large slowmelting spherical Craft Ice, measuring two inches in diameter, and can store 25 at a time in the freezer drawer, helping you eliminate the hassle of manually filling and freezing ice molds.
3. Garnish Your Drinks Incorporating herbs, edible flowers and fresh produce into your drinks presents the opportunity to incorporate personality and additional
smells into the whole experience. Think about using lavender, basil, colorful flowers and more to top off your drink.
4. Master Your Syrup Game Many classic cocktails and mocktails call for every mixologist’s secret weapon, simple syrup. Rather than go down the store-bought route, consider crafting your own! With a simple mix of water, sugar and a little elbow grease on the stove, you can crank out your own syrups with ease. 5. Presentation is Key Certain types of drinks are meant to be enjoyed from specific forms of glassware. Consider expanding your collection to ensure you’re serving in proper form. For example, a Moscow Mule must be served in a copper mug or a spritzer in a Collins glass. For more information on LG InstaView Refrigerators, visit www.LGCraftIce.com.

ARTS+CULTURE VENTURE
Presented by Colorado Conservatory of Dance What happens when you mash the creativity of two Colorado Conservatory of Dance groups together into one masterful collaborative performance? On March 21st, CCD will be presenting Venture at the Broomfield Auditorium, where DanceFound meets Young Choreographers Showcase. The premise of the performance is to close the generation gap with a collaborative choreographic mashup. Their adult dance company, DanceFound, meets their Young Choreographers Showcase to provide an evening of scintillating original work across virtually every conceivable style of dance. Masterfully performed by multiple generations of CCD dancers, this first-ever collaboration promises to thrill with over a dozen world premieres. This year, Colorado Conservatory of Dance will be combining DanceFound and Young Choreographer’s Showcase into one show called Venture. This performance will be at the Broomfield Auditorium. Venture will be broken down in three acts. Act I will contain all of the DanceFound pieces,
choreographed by faculty and adult students. The Act II will be a collaboration with our adult students and the Young Choreographers Showcase students. The Act III will consist of the YCS pieces choreographed by students. The goal of this collaboration is to show that truly anyone can dance, and anyone can create art no matter the age gap. Colorado Conservatory of Dance’s mission is to unleash individual potential and invigorate community through dance. Their vision is to be a responsible and stable national model of excellence in dance, health and wellness, and non-profit management. From CCDance.org: “With direction, purpose, and intent, the Colorado Conservatory of Dance creates a healthy and generous environment where students, parents and community members are nurtured and encouraged to develop their most creative and fulfilled selves. We responsibly pursue our mission with high standards and high expectations. We value mentorship and partnership, and we believe that dance should be available and accessible to all.” For more information and to purchase tickets, visit https://ccdance.org/venture/.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT Kevin Pfannenstiel
Heroic Deed at Ted’s Montana Grill By Karen Luhrs
“I just did what any good-hearted person would do,” says Kevin Pfannenstiel, Team Lead at Ted’s Montana Grill in Westminster in regard to a frightening incident that occurred at the restaurant Tuesday, January 21st. It was an ordinary evening for the restaurant, but not so ordinary for Broomfield residents Karen and Otto Luhrs. Karen had recently begun working for a new company, and she and her husband were attending a welcome dinner with the company’s regional leader. Unfortunately, things got scary for the couple when Otto started choking. “I asked him if he was okay, and he shook his head no. I asked him if he could breathe, and he again shook his head no. I was in a panic,” says Karen of the terrifying moment. Luckily, Kevin was standing nearby and immediately began performing the Heimlich Maneuver. According to Karen, the restaurant was completely silent while Kevin was working to free the lodged food from Otto’s airway, and once Otto could breathe again, everyone in the restaurant applauded. “Kevin legitimately saved my husband’s life,” says Karen of the heroic deed. “If it had not been for Kevin taking the immediate action that he took, today we might be telling the story of a different outcome. It was a miracle.” “I just knew I had to help because no one else would,” Kevin said when asked what went through his mind. Kevin has lived in Colorado since 2001, and has worked at Ted’s Montana
Otto Luhrs and Kevin Pfannenstiel
Grill for 15 years. He has taken several CPR classes, including training from Boy Scouts and First Aid classes for expecting parents, but had never had to perform the Heimlich before Tuesday evening when his training allowed him to save a life. Kevin believes that it is important for all members of the food service industry to get training for life-saving techniques so that they can be the first to respond, if necessary. Karen and Otto maintained a sense of humor about the incident, joking about the great first impression they must have made on her new company. Otto thanked Kevin with a well-deserved drink afterward.

HEALTH+WELLNESS 8 Tips to
Allergy-Proof Your Home By BPT
Here are some tips to make your home comfortable for guests with allergies to your furry family members. 1. Bare the Floors Carpets and rugs are notorious for collecting dust mites, pet dander and other allergens, which can trigger allergy-sensitive guests.
2. Don’t Be Blind to Your Blinds Those window blinds that protect your privacy are also dust magnets in need of regular cleaning and dusting. Try mixing equal parts vinegar and Arm & Hammer™ Baking Soda and warm water. Spray the blinds until they’re fully soaked and then wipe clean.
3. Love Your Lamp Shades Lampshades are tricky to dust, so they’re often skipped over during cleaning. Use a lint roller or packing tape; their sticky surfaces work faster than a cloth to collect dust on lampshades.
4. Come Clean with Your Pets Pet dander, urine
and saliva are the main culprit to allergies - not pet hair. A weekly wash and scrub - using warm water and a dander-reducing shampoo - can greatly reduce allergens!
5. Designate Pet-Free Zones Pet hair can get everywhere, but you can dramatically reduce these fly-aways by keeping your pets out of certain areas of the house where your guests will be. 6. Defend Against Dander Run your clothes and bedding in the dryer before you wash them to remove pet hair, and consider using a hypoallergenic detergent like Arm & Hammer™ Sensitive Skin Free & Clear detergent.
7. Put Out Some Plants The American Society of Horticultural Science and other organizations have performed studies that show how indoor plants significantly improve and clean a room’s air quality. Setting out plants like aloe, golden pathos and
bamboo palm can help filter out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air.
8. Freshen the Air Air purifiers and filters can work wonders in reducing airborne allergens and keeping your surroundings feeling fresh. Purchase air filters that have a HEPA filter and start running them a few days before guests arrive for best results. Elizabeth Mullans, M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Uptown Dermatology.

ACTIVITIES Compete in the 11th Annual
Bowl for A Precious Child Tournament A Precious Child’s 11th annual Bowl for A Precious Child tournament, presented by B & B Heating & Air Conditioning, takes place March 8, 2020 at Bowlero in Westminster to raise funds that help provide opportunities and resources to children in need and empower them to achieve their full potential. This friendly competition is a collaborative effort between the North Metro Fire Rescue District and the Broomfield Police Department.
“A Precious Child has been a longtime partner of the fire district and has helped many families in our community who have been impacted by fire, among other difficult circumstances,” said David Ramos, Fire Chief for North Metro Fire Rescue District. “The bowling event is a fun way for us to give back to the community. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for a friendly competition with Broomfield Police to support a good cause, while defending our winning title.” The community is welcome to register as a bowler for two rounds of bowling, a drawing with exciting prizes, fun games, contests, pizza and more. All members of the community are welcome to watch this family-friendly competition.
“This exciting event brings our community together with our heroes, and is a fun way to help ensure children in need in our community have everything they need to thrive,” said Carina Martin, CEO and Founder for A Precious Child. “We want to encourage community members, volunteers, companies, churches and other organizations to get involved.” “This event allows us an opportunity to give back to disadvantaged families, while competing in a fun event with the fire department and community,” said Roger Plunkett, Commander, Broomfield Police Department. “We have seen this event grow, raise more funds and provide awareness to help children in need. Kids, cops, firefighters, and the community bowl together while raising money, to empower kids to succeed. Besides, it’s just fun for our brothers in blue to bring the trophy to our house!”

ENJOYING
YOUR
PERSONAL
OUTDOOR OASIS By Todd Tuell
If spring fever hasn’t struck yet, you can bet it soon will. Many of us take great pride in our yards and outdoor living spaces. Finding some special comfort in wonderful outdoor living environment is one of the true blessings of living in Colorado. A custom deck or patio is a good place to start in creating your personal oasis.

If your deck is more than five or six years old, you might be noticing your deck becoming weather worn. Spruce up may go beyond a simple coat of stain or sealant. “First thing you want to look for is signs of dry rot,” says Chet Anderson, owner of CA Carpentry. This problem develops especially in Colorado’s climate of alternating wet and dry, hot and cold. When poor materials are used, the problem can be even more significant even to the point of becoming a structural hazard. “I would say most decks constructed by builders before 2005 were built using non-treated lumber.” Anderson notes that building codes have become much stricter across the area. He recommends always using treated lumber for the framing, galvanized nails to avoid rust, and paying attention that the deck’s ledger boards are properly flashed. All these are precautions his own team takes on every job. Installing deck lights, especially at the stairs, is an upgrade you might consider for an existing deck this summer. It is a safety feature that many building departments are now requiring for newly built decks. Another consideration for your outdoor living space is a shade feature. “The advantage of this is that it will cool house down when summer hits,” says Anderson. “A pergola or an awning can make your deck more usable especially if it’s west facing.” He also notes that composite decking material can get much hotter than redwood. A nice patio can also offer the outdoor living space that doesn’t need to be raised off of the ground. Rocky Mountain Stonecrete is a local business that provides a more natural and artistic alternative to the concrete slab you might associate with typical patios. “It’s a special mixture of color and concrete to create a real looking stone in outdoor and indoor settings,” explains owner, Eric Niemann. For those homeowners who want to enjoy their summer and not spend it working around the house, maintenance and care is a dream. “All you need to do is hose it off,” says Niemann. “Then every 3 to 5 years, you reseal it with an acrylic sealer.” Color choice for a patio is a major consideration according to Niemann. Especially in new developments where you don’t yet have much shade, direct sunlight on a darker surface can become uncomfortably warm. Landscaping is a passion of many and now is the time to start planning if you have changes in mind. With Colorado’s unpredictable weather and long periods of dryness, the biggest consideration is how much green to bring into your yard. There are many alternatives ranging from use of native plants to integrating more rock as decorative elements and ground cover. The best place to start is with your county’s CSU extension office. Many have Master Gardeners to help you with your plans. Warm weather is for enjoying the outdoors. But it’s also for getting the big home projects done. Your home is a huge investment. You don’t want to wait for another winter to arrive and still not have your siding replaced. Once start seeing issues with warping and
rotting, you’re putting your biggest investment at risk. “The first thing to check for is rotting, cracking or pulling away from the wall,” says Keith Vigil, partner and owner of GS Construction in Littleton. He explains that the UV levels are much higher in Colorado. “That tends to make the paint on siding break down faster than you might see in other states,” he says. “Without that protection, our wet and dry weather and hot and cold temperatures make typical Masonite siding fail faster than the manufacture might indicate.” If you are in need of siding replacement, one consideration is to install an upgraded product. GS Construction is a preferred retailer of James Hardie fiber cement siding. “In Colorado, it’s like having brick or stone on your home,” explains Vigil. “It’s very low maintenance. It’s fire proof, hail proof, wood pecker proof.” With the cold weather soon behind us, window replacement may not have crossed your mind. But did you know that many energy efficient windows are effective in reducing solar heat gain, thus lowering your cooling bills over the summer months? There are many good products on the market, but the biggest consideration is proper installation. Make sure you are confident with the team you hire. When you take on projects this spring and summer, make sure you consider the long term effects of your choices. Talk to professionals to get the real scoop on product options. On top of that, make sure the job is done right so you can enjoy your summer outdoor oasis this year and for many years to come.

FURRY FRIENDS Help Your Pet
Feel at Home on Vacation By NewsUSA
Families, when planning their vacations, are often looking to bring along a very important guest: the family pet. According to a recent survey from Petplan Pet Insurance, more than 78 percent of pet owners say they take their pet with them on vacation. If you’re among the travelers adding pet-friendliness to your list of accommodation must-haves, consider staying in a vacation rental to make vacationing with your furry friend as seamless as possible. Vacation rentals offer many of the advantages of home, like fully equipped kitchens, multiple bedrooms, more space and privacy all-around. For pets used to having plenty of space, vacationing in a typical 325-square-foot hotel room might leave them feeling cramped. The average vacation rental is 1,850 square feet, giving you, your family and your pet enough space to spread out in during your stay. When you arrive, let your pet explore
the rental and sniff around outdoors to help them adapt to the new space. Vacation rentals can also help maintain some of the familiarity and routine pets crave. If your pet is used to sleeping in the living room, or their bowls are typically in the kitchen, they can still enjoy those comforts while away. Bring some of your pet’s favorite toys and blankets along to help make your rental feel even more like home. In addition to more room inside, many vacation rentals offer private outdoor space. Some even have large decks and fenced-in backyards, creating ideal vacation space for travelers with pets, whether you’re barbecuing outside or letting your pet get some fresh air in-between attractions. When booking your accommodations, ask about any added services or amenities that may help your pet feel more comfortable on vacation. For example, Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professionally managed vacation rentals company, greets furry guests in some of its properties with common pet necessities and temporary ID tags for their collars. SECURE Act Causing Mistakes! Avoid Probate Reduce Taxes Feel Secure
Plans That Work. People Who Care. Estate Planning Wills Trusts Business Planning Efficient Probate and Trust Administration Serving our client family since 1996 Offices in Brighton and Westminster 303.654.0100 www.EstatePlansThatWork.com
In December Congress passed the SECURE Act. The Act significantly changed how retirement assets are treated after your death. A lot of articles and information has been circulated about the impact of this new legislation. Unfortunately, much of this information, and the recommended changes, is inaccurate and does not consider all of the options.
The Truth About Estate Planning™ Workshop
One of the responses to this new law was to dismiss using a protective trust as a beneficiary for your retirement plan. Protective trusts provide advantages for your family, and directing your retirement plan to those trusts is an effective planning tool. If designed correctly there will be no difference in the income tax outcome. When adjusting for a change in the law, remember the results you hoped to obtain through your estate plan. Then design and implement the strategies to address the tax change with that in mind. While the new act did increase taxes, the changes to the law did not create a situation that requires you to abandon your goals and objectives.
Come and learn about your planning options, including costs, without obligation. You’ll also learn how you can create a plan tailored to your needs by working with people who know you personally and truly care about you and your family. Workshop dates are listed below. Space is limited, and reservations are required, so call to make your reservation today. Workshops may not be held in our offices.
Anyone who has retirement plan assets should meet with their knowledgeable estate planning attorney and update their estate plan and how they handle their retirement plans. If someone is telling you shouldn’t leave a retirement plan to a trust because of significant tax impact, they are simply wrong. There are simple techniques available, and some may actually increase the amount your family receives.
THURSDAY, MARCH 12TH AT 6PM WESTMINSTER THURSDAY, MARCH 26TH AT 6:30PM BRIGHTON

DEFINE
YOUR OWN
DESIGN By Family Features
Spring is the perfect time to clean, freshen up, and create a new atmosphere in your home. You don’t need to purchase new furniture or expensive decor in order to spruce up your environment. With Scotch tape, some paint and some ingenuity, you can add exciting new designs to your home for less money. Explore these ideas to help spark creativity for your next project.
MAKE A STATEMENT There was a time when it was considered daring to paint one wall in a room a different color. However, these days, statement walls are replacing the subtler accent wall. A wall filled with geometric shapes or a colorful pattern is an eye-catching enhancement that can be added to just about any space. Instead of purchasing a painting or photograph to hang on your wall, consider using your own creativity to make a unique statement wall, either with repeating patterns or abstract shapes.
Scotch Painter’s Tape partnered with Matt W. Moore to create this welcoming and colorful mural at a New Orleans based organization for young artists. In cities across the country, vibrant murals reflect a growing trend toward a more adventurous design. It’s a style that you can easily adapt and make your own with existing decor elements that are already in your home.
REVAMP FURNITURE Refinishing old furniture is an affordable way to outfit a newly designed room. For an on-trend look, invite some visual interest with patterns. You might choose a single color stripe to contrast a lighter or darker hue, or create a pattern using shapes like circles or diamonds. Side tables, dressers, dining tables and entertainment centers are perfect options to spice up a room. If you’re concerned that you won’t like the change, consider using a water-soluble, washable paint first to make sure you are happy with the pattern before applying a permanent coat.
CONSIDER ACCENT PIECES Paint embellishment doesn’t have to be limited to hard surfaces; textiles can also benefit from a bold paint makeover. Accent pieces like pillows or lamp shades are easy places to add colorful designs on a small scale that can easily be swapped out if and when you’re ready for a new look. Again, you can use a simple strip with a pop of color, or you can opt for repeating patterns such as chevron or circles. If you are feeling really creative, you can attempt more complicated designs such as palm trees, pineapples or mountain images. Just be sure to use paint suitable for fabric.

Divorce Is Never Easy... That’s Why We’re Here. PRO TAPING TIPS •
Make sure the surface is clean, dry and dust-free so the tape sticks properly.
•
Apply tape directly on the surface, pressing down as you go without stretching the tape.
•
Press down firmly with a smooth edge to secure the tape.
•
Let the tape set for about 30-60 minutes before painting.
•
Wait until the paint is dry to the touch before removing the tape.
•
Use a putty knife or razor blade to score along the edge of the tape to help prevent cracking along the paint line.
•
Lift tape slowly by pulling it back on itself then removing at a 45-degree angle.

A GARDENER’S BEST FRIEND
RAISED BED GARDENING ON THE FRONT RANGE By Daniel Buelow
Raised beds and cold frames are two important tools that are a gardener’s best friend in the short growing season of the Front Range. Understanding the purpose of these tools and their benefits is a great way to achieving a productive garden early, throughout and long after the typical growing season. Spring is upon us and planning for the garden of your dreams must start now!
RAISED BED GARDENING Araised bed is essentially a garden that is constructed above the native ground that uses a premium soil mixture to provide an optimal growing environment. Raised beds provide an opportunity to enjoy a productive garden where space, soil or environment may be a limiting factor. Growing in a raised bed offers an ease and comfort in garden preparation, production, maintenance and harvest. Crop yields may show improvement in a raised bed thanks to an increase in the plant density and the ability to quickly manipulate or modify the soil and growing conditions. Additional benefits include the reduction of soil compaction by eliminating foot traffic in the garden and the avoidance of many common challenges that plague Colorado soils. Native soils may prove to be high in clay content, pH, salts or heavy metals and suffer from poor water drainage. Cold and wet soils that are slow to warm up and dry out in the springtime put gardeners at a disadvantage with delayed seed germination times and reduced root growth. In raised beds, the soil is located above ground and warms and dries more quickly supplying the perfect soil environment needed for a quick start in the spring.

RAISED BED CONSTRUCTION
COLD FRAMES
Constructing a raised bed requires consideration of the site location, size, construction materials and soil. First, choose a site that receives lots of sunlight and if possible a site that is protected from wind. Next, determine the bed size with the understanding that the bed length may be as long as desired; however, the bed should not be more than 4 ft. wide to allow for a comfortable reach anywhere into the bed without entering. Consider the above ground and below ground plant structures and growth when determining bed depth as the depth must be sufficient to accommodate the crop to be grown. For shallower beds or those constructed on bare ground, till or amend the native soil beneath the bed for purpose to improve drainage and offer additional potential root zone. Construction materials for bed frame may include untreated lumber, timbers, pavers or blocks. Pre-constructed untreated wooden frames that are hinged at the corners and stackable to create deeper raised beds can be found at many garden centers. Also available are manufactured bed sets that are decorative and quick to assemble. Not every raised bed needs a frame. However, the frame offers erosion control and some temperature stability. Insertion of foam within the walls of the bed offer even greater temperature control during cold nights. Keep in mind that raised beds may also be covered with a plastic, a frost cloth or a grow tunnel cover to provide resistance to crop losses when freezing temperatures occur. Lastly and most importantly, select a soil for a raised bed that is loose, meaning that the soil has ample pore space for oxygen and water, provides good drainage, and is free of viruses, pests and diseases. The soil should contain organic matter but not be too rich in organic matter. Organic matter (OM) content near 5% may be sufficient for many crops, while slightly higher OM content may result in a quicker crop turnover or sometimes in crop difficulties or quality issues.
A cold frame is a miniature greenhouse like structure that consists of a stable, but bottomless frame and a cover that is penetrable by light and has the ability to hinge open and vent off the excess heat that builds up within the frame on cold but sunny Colorado days. Cold frames are valuable because they create a protected environment for cool season crops to continue growth or production without the threat of life threatening damages due to cold or freezing. Cold frames are used primarily for productive early season starts and late season finishes for cool season vegetables and other tender plants that are started outside before the danger of nighttime frosts are past in the spring or are still producing magnificently ahead of anticipated nighttime frosts in the fall. Gardeners using cold frames are able to start crop production weeks earlier and end crop production weeks later than seasonally expected; nevertheless, cold frames require attention to detail. Be very cautious and mindful of the daytime heat that builds inside the cold frame on sunny but cold days.
LET’S GARDEN! It is time to get spring gardening preparations started. Consider raised beds and cold frames for lengthening the gardening season and enjoy the garden of your dreams! March 2020 | The Broomfielder™ | Read more online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com
