Town of Leesburg
Leesburg’s Crowd Pleaser Flower and Garden Festival Blooms April 16-17 By Margaret Morton The surest sign of spring’s arrival is the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival, which will be held Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17 throughout downtown Thousands of Loudouners and visitors from around the region will converge on the historic district to wander the six-block festival area, eying the great variety of plants, garden-related equipment, backyard furniture and accessories, as well as enjoying entertainment for all ages and a wide range of food and offerings from nine local breweries. The event has won many awards over its 25year history and is the Town of Leesburg’s largest annual event. There will be a few tweaks here and there this year, according to the duo in charge of the annual production, Parks and Recreation Department Event Coordinator Barb Smith and Events and Outreach Manager Linda Fountain. The basic footprint of the festival remains unchanged—two blocks of Market Street; two blocks on North King, and one on South King, one on West Cornwall Street, the Lightfoot lot, the Post Office lot and the parking lot at 19 N. King St. Vendors include a mix of landscape exhibits, plant vendors, hardscape, garden equipment and decorations to offer practically everything one could want for outdoor living (See more on festival vendors, Page 4). The festival is both a visual delight and a great source of horticultural education. Vendors and
By the numbers: • 2,066 linear feet of vendor space • 1,500 town staff hours from Friday to Sunday • 1,200 glasses in the Wine and Beer Garden • 700 terra cotta pots/15 pounds of seed/320 quarts of soil in the Children’s Area • 50 part-time staff members • 30 full-time parks and rec staffers • 28 picnic tables • 15 gallons of paint/100 paint brushes in the Children’s Area • 11 ticket booths landscapers offer a wealth of information and garden design tips to both experienced and novice gardeners. The Post Office lot will house various nonprofits where volunteers will hand out literature and talk to the public about their programs. The entertainment roster on the courthouse lawn stage features musicians performing a variety of music for festivalgoers, who often rest their feet for a while and enjoy food from the various vendors as they listen to some great music. Patrons this year will have the choice of sitting on the lawn by the courthouse steps, or using picnic tables that
3 are now allowed in the lawn area near Church and East Market streets (See details on entertainment lineup, Page 16). Also, the parking lot behind 19 N. King St. will be open as a shaded picnic area, including a large tent, to provide festivalgoers with more places to sit and have a bite. Kids, as usual, have their own space—on Cornwall Street, where they can enjoy games and crafts as well as their own entertainment (See more on kids’ offerings, Page 8). Another change this year concerns the landscape exhibitors. For the first time, there will be no landscape contest with formal judging of the elaborate garden creations that are a hallmark of the festival. Instead the only “judges” will be the public, as Smith and Fountain have retained the popular “People’s Choice” award. Smith and Fountain are excited with the spring-like 2016 festival logo with its bright yellow black-eyed Susan. The 4,000 lime green tote bags that will be given away show a bright blue flower, the festival logo and main sponsors listed on the front and “Leesburg, the hometown of the 21st century,” also in blue, on the back. “The tote bags go very quickly,” Smith said. They give out about 2,000 per day. There are also a few high-tech upgrades. “We’re coming into the modern world,” Fountain quipped. This year visitors can text “flower 88-777” to get information about the event sent to their phones. Short messages and updates will be provided during the run-up to the festival. Among the notices will be information about parking, hours and shuttle stops. In another new touch, participating downtown businesses who put the Flower and Garden logo in their window and offer special promotions will be listed in a special festival directory. Admission is a requested donation of $3 to help defray some of the festival costs. Parking is available in both the Town Hall parking lot on West Loudoun Street and the Loudoun County Government Center lot on East Loudoun Street, as well as satellite parking at Ida Lee Park. Shuttles will provide continuous free transport between the festival area and Ida Lee Park. Pets are not allowed in the festival area, and visitors are advised to wear comfortable shoes as considerable walking is involved. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. Festival-area streets will close at 5:30 p.m. Friday and re-open at around 10 p.m. Sunday. For more information, go to flowerandgarden.org or call 703-777-1368. mmorton@loudounnow.com

Vendors Offer Everything for Outdoor Living By Margaret Morton For two days each year, the streets of downtown Leesburg become the region’s largest garden center
Town of Leesburg
There will be 150 vendors—offering everything from awnings to zucchini plants—lined up in the six-block festival area. Festival coordinator Barb Smith is excited with the mix of vendor products this year. “The goal is to provide as much variety as possible,” she said, calling this year’s collection “a nice blend of returning and new vendors.” The wide range of plants is matched with all kinds of items for outdoor living and gardening. Items include backyard furniture and accessories, garden art, stained glass, decorated gourds and gourd birdhouses, quixotic birdhouses, mosaic tiles, birdbaths, bat houses, stepping stones, pavers, outdoor rugs and garden equipment. Festivalgoers can also shop for everything from garden pottery and vases to lawn mowers and spa accessories. Soaps and lotions, Greek olive oils,

loose leaf teas, jams, seagrass hats, gloves and sunglasses will also be featured. “We have a lot of plant materials this year,” festival coordinator Barb Smith said. And whether buyers are novices or experienced gardeners—there is something for everybody. The festival is known as a great place to find that unusual, hard-to-find perennial or shrub you’ve been looking for. There are vendors that VENDORS continues on page 6

specialize in all categories of plants: fruiting trees, shrubs, herbs, annuals, perennials, exotic bulbs, vegetables, native plants, bonsai, hanging baskets, air plants, herb vinegars, sprouts, succulents, seeds and carnivorous plants. Many of the vendors will be familiar to festivalgoers, but also there will be new faces present. Some of them have come long distances to participate in the festival that has won national awards over the years. MoTown Mushrooms from Morristown, VT, will offer mushroom growing kits, including a hollowed log. KSCanuck is coming from Emporia, KS. Michigan Made Metal is from Hartland, MI. And East End Foodies is bringing its balsamic vinegars from Tuxedo, NY. Some new Virginia vendors include Dripping Springs Ollas, from Gloucester, which provides unusual earthenware underground water soakers; Heather’s Pet Products from Salem; and Sophia Street Studios from Fredericksburg. From closer to home, new local vendors include Wood Fired Pottery from Lucketts; Lovettsville’s Jumbo Bottom Barrel Works and its reclaimed wine barrel furniture products; and Watermark Woods from Hamilton offers native plants. More unusual wares will be found at the booth of Connecticut vendor Richard Borden, who makes hand-carved bowls and baskets from Cypress roots.
Town of Leesburg
At the other end of the scale, nothing is more familiar than a display of cut flowers from the garden. Holly Heider Chapple has operated a booth at the center of town during every one of the festival’s 25 years, blending blooms to create sweet-smelling bouquets. “We looked for things that promote outdoor living
and gardening,” Events and Outreach Manager Linda Fountain, who has worked in tandem with Smith, said. “If a product can’t be outside, this may not be your show,” she advises applicants. mmorton@loudounnow.com

and various games round out the offerings for the activities. And when they’re tired of that, the kids can sit on the sidewalk or on straw bales to watch their own entertainment roster. Entertainers perform in 45-minute segments. First up Saturday at 11 a.m. is Uncle Pete, a popular interactive entertainer who delights young audiences with song, music and dance. Next up, at noon, is Claysmile Zumba Party, another entertaining show designed to get the kids moving using the hit exercise Latin-inspired dance style Zumba. At 1 p.m., longtime crowd favorite, Celtic Rhythm, mesmerizes children with the troupe’s traditional and meticulous Irish step dance routines and beautiful costumes. Another dance group follows at 2 p.m.; the Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers dance to a variety of music, including traditional bluegrass, country, pop rock, Irish and some orchestral. At 3 p.m., Troupe Eshveh takes the stage. The professional dance ensemble uses both

Town staffers can be seen hosing off the large plywood animal cutouts that children have liberally covered with paint, ready for another go under the onslaught of determined kiddy brushstrokes. It’s one of the kids’ favorite stops each year and parents need not fear their kids will return with paint all over their clothes, as staff members wrap them in protective aprons. Sponsor Home Depot has provided 700 terra cotta pots and 15 pounds of seed, along with 100 paint brushes and 320 quarts of soil, so the kids can have the fun of filling the pot with dirt, planting a seed, and decorating plant stakes. Best of all, they get to take it home. They can also make colorful tissue paper flowers. Face painting

Visitors to Vote on Best Landscape Exhibit By Margaret Morton The elaborate and creative exhibits assembled by landscape designers are hallmarks of the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival That continues in 2016. For many festivalgoers the exhibits—often featuring rock walls, water features and gazebos— provide inspiration for sprucing up their backyards. For others, they offer ideas for arranging their wagon load of new plants when the shoppers get home. Building the displays is no small feat, and not cheap either. This year, festival organizers worked to make it easier for landscapers to participate. They’ve waived the booth fees and given the designers more of a free hand in general. “They spend so much time making [the gardens] and spending so much money on the design, we decided to change the format,” Outreach Manager VISITORS’ VOTE continues on page 22

Festival’s Music Unplugs a Bit
Musicians will take the stage on the Loudoun County Courthouse lawn all day Saturday and Sunday.
By John McNeilly This year’s music lineup for the main stage at the county courthouse promises to be a quieter affair Literally. Leesburg’s Department of Parks & Recreation, the organizer of the festival, cracked open the suggestion box and learned that although vendors enjoyed the music of local bands in previous years’ festivals the volume of the performances often made it difficult to communicate with customers. Visitors expressed the same concern. And while this year’s festival will feature the same local-centric music lineup, it will emphasize more low-key, acoustic sets. The energy, spirit and musicality will all be there, but the audio will be tamped down a bit. (Think seven, instead of 11.) “We listened to our vendors and this year’s musical lineup will have more of an acoustical drive to it,” Barb Smith, events coordinator for Leesburg’s Department of Parks & Recreation, said. “I like it because it still gives a hometown feel. And the backdrop of the old courthouse offers a perfect place for people to picnic with family and friends and to just relax and rest your feet while

Ken Wenzel is a musician whose popularity at area wineries and breweries, and his alt-country band Cross Kentucky is well established. He’s thrilled about his first appearance at the event. “I attended the festival last year and remember thinking, ‘I really need to play this event.’ the Leesburg music scene is fun and I’m proud to represent,” Wenzel said. He, like many other musicians on the lineup, is prepared for the quieter tone of the festival. the performance will be an acoustic duo, with Wenzel playing primarily original music, accompanied by his pedal steel guitar player Bobby Birdsong, who also plays in his regular band.

“I guarantee you that will be the only pedal steel player you’ll hear among the acoustic offerings that day,” he said, laughing. this softer approach makes Smith, who’s newly installed as the town’s events coordinator, very happy. “We really made an effort this year to improve the overall atmosphere for vendors, their customers, and our visitors. this is the direct result of feedback from them,” she said. “We think everyone will be happy with it.” mmorton@loudounnow.com

VISITORS’ VOTE continued from page 12
Linda Fountain said. the town has done away with the formal landscaping contest that required the displays to meet specific criteria. However, the top designer— picked by visitors casting ballots for the People’s Choice award—will still walk away with coveted bragging rights. “It’s a nice thing for the landscapers; it takes the focus off technical needs,” said Barb Smith, Leesburg’s Parks and recreation events coordinator. “We hope to widen the appeal, to make it more fun, and to make it for the everyday gardener, so people can actually envision it in their back garden,” Fountain said. this year, there will be six landscapers in the competition: amazing earth Landscapes from Purcellville, easternview by Deckscapes of Virginia from Catharpin, Homeland Scapes from Leesburg, Saxton Landscapes Inc. from Purcellville, Main Street Landscape Inc. from Haymarket, and the Pond Doctor from Warrenton. their displays will include water features, deck structures, pavers, pavilions, furnished patios, along with a large variety of shrubs, bulbs, trees, flowers and other live plant materials. Main Street Landscape Inc. won the 2015 People’s Choice award. mmorton@loudounnow.com

They are dedicated to promoting tree preservation and planting within the Town, providing a healthy and diverse tree canopy as well as ensuring an aesthetic quality of life for all citizens. The Town’s Urban Forestry Management Plan was approved in 2006 to guide Leesburg’s efforts to recover the loss of tree canopy and enhance all tree-related benefits by recommending strategies and actions to improve their urban forest management in an equitable, economic, and sustainable manner.
