Art‌ by Design
The Art and Design Departments once again showcased the work of their students at the annual Art and Design Show. The work on show was outstanding in both its quality and diversity, a testimony to the skill and endeavour of the boys involved.

Search and Find For a second year, the CCF Army Section based themselves at Quorn for their Field Day activities. They pursued a number of activities utilising the very extensive and varied terrain and vegetation afforded by our fields. The area around the stream provided an excellent location for a “search and destroy exercise” and for the construction of bivouacs, and the long grass provided ideal country for a camouflage and recognition task.
Field Day Fun CCF Field Day in June gives Years 6 to 10 the opportunity to let off steam after a hectic year. Year 6 worked hard to present their version of Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations by Alan Aykbourn; Year 7 visited Drayton Manor Park; Year 8 explored the delights of Alton Towers; Year 9 cycled around Rutland Water; Year 10 - seen here - canoed, sailed and raft built at Bosworth Water.

Come Fly with Me

During the summer, the CCF RAF Section enjoyed camps at RAF Fairford, where they worked on essential tasks as part of the Royal International Air Tattoo, and at RAF Odiham, a more “normal” camp, and experienced a wide range of activities, the highlight being a trip in a Chinook helicopter – the karting was also a favourite!

Charitable Cricket
September 2016
Three years after the previous, very successful tour to Sri Lanka, the senior cricketers once again left for the island in mid-July. The cricket was, as expected, very competitive, ending with wins and losses balancing out. Two highlights were Ben Mike’s 143 not out in the first match and playing at the International Rangiri Stadium in Dambulla, which later in the summer hosted two one day matches between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Away from the cricket, the party visited the Endowed Schools’ charity projects at Batukanaththa and Galpothawala, plus the “home” of Rebuilding Sri Lanka in Uragasmanhandiya. Visiting the schools is a humbling experience and the lads were magnificent in playing games with the children, handing out nutrient packs and presenting gifts. Mr Gidley also presented new fans for Batukanaththa as well as two iPads.
The members of the tour party would like to express their sincere thanks to Mrs Clare Allen and her team at Rebuilding Sri Lanka for making their visits to the schools so memorable.

Just So
This year’s Year 8 Drama Festival was based on five of the “Just So Stories” by Rudyard Kipling: How the elephant got his trunk; How the leopard gained his spots; How the alphabet was formed; The beginning of the armadillos; The cat who walked by himself. Each tutor group performed a colourful piece and as always physical drama loomed large in a very enjoyable production.

Midsummer Night’s Dream The junior drama clubs of LGS and LHS combined to perform a very ambitious version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They planned to present the work in a number of outdoor venues around the campus, not least in the Spinney, but they were almost thwarted by the horrendous June weather. Only one performance outdoors was possible – just. Everyone involved must be congratulated on the way they adapted at the last minute to presenting the work in the LHS Studio Theatre: it was fantastic – or was it a dream?

Yorkshire Adventure
10
Year 7 once again ventured into the wilds of Yorkshire – well almost – on their annual residential trips. One group departed in early June whilst a second trip left in July. Both groups enjoyed a range of outdoor pursuits, such as cycling, outdoor cooking and abseiling.

All the fun of the fair The now annual Year 7 Fete and Alternative Sports Day managed to defeat the early July weather, but many events had to be taken indoors, rather than being in the Quad. Nevertheless, a total of £1340 was raised, £340 of which has gone to the Malawi Association for Christian Support, which helps children to attend secondary school, as education is not free. The remaining £1000 will be used by the PA to support various aspects of school life.
Motoring Along
The Parents’ Association have funded and supported the Design Technology Department by providing a 1993 Mazda MX5 for the Sixth Form to work on during their Thursday afternoon activities alongside the Greenpower Electric Go-Kart Project. The Department has a link with Loughborough Car Club through a parent, Mr Richard Egger.
