Learn Bringing Literature to life In September, Year 13 English students explored the deep context of their major A2 Paper topics by visiting gothic locations and pastoral places in London, including the site of Newgate, the notorious prison and place of public execution, and the site of Dr Johnson’s house in Gough Court.

Formula for Success Twenty of the keenest Year 12 Chemists took part in this year’s University of Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, most scoring better than the average for those entering the competition: they gained an impressive 2 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 Copper awards between them.
Outnumbered In November the Loughborough Grammar School Sixth Form Maths team competed against 16 other schools from in or near Leicestershire, in the ‘Senior Team Maths Challenge’ competition, held at Loughborough University. Year 13s Matei Mandache and Arthur Tang and Year 12s Alex Westin-Hardy and Terry Tong swept aside the rest of the field for the sixth consecutive year, scoring an unassailable 89%, and now go forward to the National Final in February.
Physics Comes Home The School’s latest Science development, a new Physics building, was formally opened on Wednesday 17th October at 12 noon, by Professor Ian White, Master of Jesus College Cambridge and President of the Loughborough Endowed Schools. The building, named after Neville Ireland (Headmaster, 1984 to 1998) completes the laboratory provision in the Science Park and replaces the original Science Building housing all three subjects which was opened in 1963.
Starry, Starry Write The Queen’s Building saw stars to rival the Milky Way as a hugely successful project to write poetry about celestial bodies culminated in the entire stairwell being filled with the results.

Magnificently led by the twelve members of the Corps of Drums, 275 cadets of the Combined Cadet Force formed a very large section of the town’s Remembrance Day Parade and Service on Sunday 11th November. The Contingent, in the vanguard of the second half of the parade as it made its way to and from the Service of Remembrance held in front of the Carillon in Queen’s Park, exercised its annual right to march along the A6 from Burton Walks to Southfields Park and back again for the Muster and Dismissal elements of the parade. The salute for the March Past in Devonshire Square was taken by Lady Gretton, the Lord Lieutenant of the County and a Governor of the Endowed Schools
Leading Edge Will Peck, a Senior Cadet in the CCF(RAF) Section, has won the top award in the Air Cadet Leadership Course held at the Royal Air Force College at Cranwell. The Cubby Sword is presented to the ATC or CCF(RAF) cadet considered to have shown the best leadership potential during the four Courses which are held each year. Around 800 cadets are nominated of whom only 200 are selected and the competition between these is very keen indeed. To be judged the top cadet out of so many is an outstanding achievement, especially as Will is diabetic and dependent upon regular medication to control the condition.

Carols Across the Campus The Burton Choristers, along with the newly-formed Chesterton Cantamus, the LES Senior Choir, the Senior Girls’ Choir, the Chamber Choir and the LES Choral Society, led a large and appreciative congregation at the Endowed Schools’ Carol Service, held at the beautiful St Margaret’s Church in Leicester.
Season’s Greetings Chorus of Approval The Burton Choristers were in action at Leicester Tigers’ ground on Sunday 9th December where they sang carols to the assembling spectators for the Heineken Cup match against Benetton Treviso, gave a spirited rendering of Jerusalem to the whole stadium just before kick-off, and further entertained the 18,432 attendees at Half Time.
Christmas Largesse Every year, for two weeks towards the end of the Autumn Term, the Voluntary Service Unit launches its Christmas Hamper Appeal, asking for donations of non-perishable food items so that hampers of Christmas fare can be given to elderly and needy members of the Loughborough community. Once again, it was very well supported, enabling 38 festive hampers to be delivered to local residents who are visited by members of the VSU on Thursday afternoons.

Boxing Charitably The annual Year 7 Christmas Shoebox appeal in support of Operation Christmas Child was a huge success with a fantastic 222 boxes being donated. Packed with small toys, games, small musical intruments, educational supplies (especially stationery), hygiene items (such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap), nonchocolate sweets, scarves, gloves, hats, etc., this year the Shoeboxes were distributed to very poor children in Kosovo.
Dazzling Days of Christmas Beans Means Lines The traditional Year 7 Pantomime featured all the usual elements of audience participation and splendid silliness together with fabulous costumes. Because it was “Jack and the Beanstalk”, it also had an amazing beanstalk which grew up to the ceiling – sorry, clouds – and an extraordinarily moving performance by a cow called Daisy.
The Twelve Days of Christmas formed the central theme of a highly unusual and spectacular Christmas Tree created by Year Six pupils for the Annual Festival at the Parish Church. The twelve members of the form designed one “stained glass” panel each and the tree itself was inspired by Mrs Viv Thompson and built by Mr John Marsden.

Charity Begins
Pedal Power In December, a cheque for £4468 was presented to Breast Cancer Care. Greg Cornes, Will Rowell and Matt Taylor, all of whom are in their final year at LGS, raised the money from a sponsored cycle trip across France in August: they covered an astonishing 1322 kilometres in two weeks!
Friday Night Fever It’s Friday, it’s December, it’s Year 8 Disco time again, which this year raised £305 for Rebuilding Sri Lanka.
Over £13,000 raised LAST term!
Bacon Butty Breakfast - and sausages!
Good Eating
Year 7 enjoyed a late breakfast and raised £510 for Chipako School in Zambia as part of their on-going support for the charity headed by Mrs Cecilia Grey who works in the LES Refectory.
The Crepe Sale held in October was one of a number of highly successful food fests held to raise money last term – needless to say it went down a treat! Bon appetit, mes braves!
