Hello to Berlin
The annual pre-Christmas visit to Berlin introduces LGS and LHS pupils to legacies of the Cold War in the shape of the East Side Gallery and the House at Checkpoint Charlie museum. In common with the Debaters earlier in the term, they too visited the Reichstag, one pupil managing to sit on Angel Merkel’s chair. The famous Christmas markets and currywurst proved equally enjoyable. Debaters at the Berlin British School: as well as debating “gay marriage”, “Facebook as a force for good”, “men as not the worst things in the world” and “why Germany shouldn’t help the needy Greek economy”, the Debating Society traced the line of the former Wall, toured the Bundestag (knocking on Angela Merkel’s door) and walked the streets of the city absorbing its history and vibrant and various arts and cultures. LGS pupils and the Romero Britto “Best Buddies Friendship Bear” which was dedicated to the city of Berlin by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 2011 to honour people with intellectual disabilities.
London Calling
