Charity

A special assembly, including traditional Sri Lankan dance, was arranged to welcome Miss Partridge to Galpoththawala school at the start of her visit in March. Miss Partridge delivered goodie bags containing small toys, stationery and sweets to the children. Her inventive art activity transcended language barriers enabling all the children to participate in creating a huge piece of art.

We have been working hard throughout the school year to raise money for charity. Numerous events have been organised in aid of a variety of charities. These have included wearing fancy dress for Red Nose Day, where each form chose a different theme, and a Year 7 Talent Show in aid of the Make a Wish Foundation. During the evening the girls showcased a variety of talents including singing, dancing and cheerleading. 2 | LHS Life | June 2013

Sport

The spring term was a busy one for the sports teams at LHS. Winners of their county tournaments were the U12 and U15 hockey teams and the U13 and U15 netball teams. The U14 and U13 hockey squads also won their Leicestershire league competitions, whilst the U13 and U12 hockey teams represented Leicestershire at the Midlands regional tournament. The recently formed LHS football team showed great prowess at the regional finals in March; the team finished second overall and won the Independent Schools Football Association shield. Two girls from the team recently competed with the Loughborough Foxes U16 football team at the county leagues cup final. Several girls from LHS took part in the recent County Orienteering Championships. The girls all worked hard, winning an overall team victory for LHS as well as individual champions in different year groups. In addition to considerable team success there have been a number of individual achievements; Mari Smith secured the county crosscountry title and she, alongside Elizabeth Mulvaney, Laura Mullin and Francesca Green, was selected to represent Leicestershire at the English Schools’ Championships. Lastly, LHS have started a karate club this year and in March six girls successfully completed their orange belts.

Trips During February half-term, LHS and LGS students from Years 11-13 travelled to Alpe d‘Huez in the French Alps, for a week of vigorous exercise on the ski slopes. The snow conditions were superb and whilst the advanced group improved their technique in deep powder, the beginners and intermediates made very rapid progress under the excellent tuition of their French ski instructors. The après ski activities included a fiercely contested quiz, ice skating and bumboarding, culminating in a traditional alpine meal at a local restaurant.

In Iceland, during the Easter holidays, a group of geography students was soaked by the spray of the waterfalls they walked behind (see front cover), by the warm water that rained down as the geyser erupted and by the waves that crashed onto the beach. Walking up to the snout of a glacier covered in volcanic ash reminded the party of the eventful LHS trip to the same area in 2010 when the volcano erupted and the group was evacuated. This time the final day was more relaxing; bathing in the warm thermal water of the blue lagoon whilst wearing face packs of volcanic mud!

Trips The whole of Year 7 had a three day residential trip to the Hilltop activity centre in Sheringham. The girls (and staff!) had a fantastic time, taking part in many activities, including climbing, abseiling, biking, the assault course and the terrifying “Super Swing! The girls were a delight to be with and a real credit to the school.

LHS Meets LGS This year’s LES musical, Return to The Forbidden Planet, wowed audiences with its spectacular stage design and eye catching costumes. An evening of spell binding performances from a talented cast and band plus a dedicated stage crew who supported the proceedings in an unflappable manner.

Our strong links with LGS continue. Sixth form students had the opportunity, for the first time this year, to join the Combined Cadet Force and 10 girls paraded at the 56th Combined Cadet Force Review in April and participated in drill displays.

Girls and boys also joined forces in a charity netball match in aid of Rebuilding Sri Lanka. The boys wore fancy dress and it was a hilarious match which the boys, being unfamiliar with the rules, lost 14-4. 6 | LHS Life | June 2013

Arts Earlier this year members of the dance and gymnastics clubs took part in the annual Dance and Gym Showcase. Girls from both clubs choreographed their own routines ranging from contemporary dance to hip hop, modern and tap, alongside some fantastic rope and beam routines. The night was a huge success. Not only did the girls and staff have great fun but ÂŁ300 was raised for the British Heart Foundation.

This is our fourth year taking part in the Leicestershire Education Business Company fashion show based at the Athena Theatre, Leicester. Schools and colleges within Leicestershire participate in a fashion show of professional standard with students taking responsibility for helping with the sound, lighting, and videoing and for creating all the catwalk collections. This year, our Year 10 collection was based on Japanese art, patterns and origami and was inspired by a John Galliano Haute Couture 2007 collection. Plain white calico fabric was folded and pleated to create each fashion piece, the outfits becoming individual pieces of walking art on the catwalk. Year 10 models had spent weeks practising their catwalk routine and hair, make up and choice of music were all decided by the pupils. LHS Life | June 2013 | 7

Eco School We are delighted to have been selected as one of only 11 schools nationwide to be EcoSchools Ambassadors for 2013-2015. In order to achieve the award we had to demonstrate eco awareness in various areas and show that this is embedded into the curriculum. Our team of Eco Warriors have been working tirelessly and are congratulated on their commitment. Recent projects include constructing a bug hotel in our eco garden and creating outfits out of recycled material at the Burton Fayre. During Climate Change week a ‘Hot and Cold’ sale of pizza and ice cream made £171 for the WWF, at the same time raising awareness of the effects of climate change. The next step is to include the wider local community in our work by, for example, linking with another school to help them on their eco journey.
