Outdoor Pursuits Bronze D of E
The girls are on their practice expedition in these photos. They walked from school to Markfield and camped over night at John’s Lee Wood Scout camp. They will go on to complete their final expedition in September and this will be in the Peak District. The girls did extremely well in awful weather conditions and must be commended for their determination and teamwork. LHS girls entered the Orienteering County Championships for the first time performing impressively on a wet Saturday morning at Bradgate Park. Three girls became individual County Champions and two others gained second places which led to LHS being Secondary Girls County Champions at our first attempt.
Creativity Cheerleading
Fashion Show
Loughborough High School has started its own cheerleading club this year. Cheerleading involves pom pom dancing, jumping, tumbling and stunting. The squad performed at the dance and gym showcase this year and will be recruiting new members to compete in the national schools competition next year!
We helped celebrate the 10th anniversary of the LEBC Fashion Show at the Athena Theatre, Leicester on March 22nd by taking two collections and 46 pupils. The GCSE group based their collection on stars and the Universe and the A Level group based their collection around the quirks and habits of the older generation.
Drama
From your whole life, from all you’ve ever done, felt or thought‌ what is the one thing you treasure most? The AS Drama and Theatre Studies students asked this very question when they presented their performance of 100 by The Imaginary Body. The characters in 100 are forced to choose and re-enact their memories. The students provided mesmerising physical theatre performances with unfaltering expertise.

Travel & Exploration Senior Ski Trip
The senior ski-ing course with LGS took place during the February half-term in the French resort of Serre Chevalier. Girls and boys from years 11, 12 and 13 joined in an action-packed week on the ski slopes. The girls were in the minority, but they soon proved equal to the boys in terms of their determination and stamina. Aprés ski activities included bum-boarding, ice-skating and swimming in the superb new thermal baths. The end of the week was marked by a traditional alpine meal in a local restaurant. Preparations are now underway for next year’s venture!
Peak District Geography Trip
60 year 10 geographers enjoyed investigating river features and processes in the Peak District as part of their IGCSE work. Data on stream velocity, channel gradient, bed load and cross-sectional area was collected by the girls to aid their understanding of river changes downstream.
Junior Classics Trip
At Easter, a party from years 8 & 9 took part in the LES Junior Classics trip to the Bay of Naples, visiting the spectacular site of Pompeii, preserved by the volcanic eruption of AD79. The itinerary included visits to the beautiful town of Herculaneum, Cumae – with the underground cave, Puzzeoli (with one of the largest amphitheatres in Italy), Solfatara, the still smouldering crater of an ancient volcano, and Mount Vesuvius itself, with its breath-taking panoramic views of the whole of the Bay of Naples. 4 | LHS Life | June 2012
Travel & Exploration USA
35 sixth form students of politics (from both ends of The Walks) visited New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC at the beginning of April. This week long trip included visits to Ellis Island, the United Nations, Ground Zero and the financial district in New York and the Houses of Congress and the Senate, the Supreme Court and the White House in Washington, as well as shopping on 5th Avenue and a Broadway show. A fantastic and fascinating trip!
Extreme Physics
Eight year 10 girls participated in the Extreme Physics event at Rugby school during the Easter holidays. They were set several challenges using their physics skills and knowledge, prepared a presentation on a physics concept and also went rock climbing and skydiving in an air column.
Your Future in Europe
Opal Coast
Just like that! At a boulangerie deep in the northern French countryside, year 8 pupils make improvements to the traditional croissant! The results were every bit as tasty!
In February, 35 year 12 students from LGS and LHS went on a four-day trip to Paris for the “Your Future in Europe” conference. This was open to all pupils studying French, Politics, Economics and Business at AS. We enjoyed hearing conferences in French and English delivered by a mixture of speakers; from the entrepreneurial speakers of Innocent smoothies to the political voice of Evan Davis. We did a spot of tourism too, and visited the Tour Montparnasse, walked along the ChampsElysées in the snow and floated along the Seine in a bateau-mouche.

Year 7 Activities Year 7 Residential Visit
After three days of exams and a medieval day, year 7 headed off to Norfolk for a three day residential experience at Hilltop activity centre. The girls really challenged themselves on a variety of activities, whilst supporting and encouraging their class-mates. Everyone participated in all of the activities and learnt many new skills, returning home feeling tired but happy.
Year 7 Medieval Day Year 7 experienced a variety of medieval activities including archery, medieval singing and artwork, stoolball and falconry. The girls learnt to fire a longbow at a target and also held several different birds of prey, receiving them from flight. This was followed up by a visit to Castle Rising on the way to Sheringham for their residential visit. 6 | LHS Life | June 2012
Year 8 Activities
Year 8 Hockerton Trip
Year 8 thoroughly enjoyed visiting The Hockerton Housing Project and Manor Farm which complemented their geography work on renewable energy and sustainable living. They learnt how important it is to generate clean energy and to farm organically. The girls are pictured on the roof of an eco house built into the hillside.
Year 8 Citizenship
Year 8 took part in their annual citizenship day when they had the opportunity to visit the council chambers in Loughborough to learn how local democracy works. They are pictured with the Mayor, Councillor Diane Wise.
Thinking Skills
At the beginning of this term year 8 attended a thinking skills workshop to help them to develop their individual learning style. The day included juggling and making a replica Roman bath house (pictured). The straws were the columns in the colonnade surrounding the palaestra. LHS Life | June 2012 | 7
Charity
Charity
LHS has continued to be incredibly successful in its fundraising efforts, raising over £17,000 since Christmas through many and varied events including the year 7 talent show. Girls organised and rehearsed their own performances in support of Water Aid. We focus here on two events for our link school, Galpothawala, in Sri Lanka. Year 12 Link prefects organised a school Talent Show; pupils from all years performed in front of an audience and judges and raised over £600 to help buy tables and chairs and to rebuild the school Library and classrooms. Year 11 held a charity breakfast. The girls enjoyed their sausages and croissants especially for such a good cause! They raised £120 which will be used to kit out the new classrooms. Staff have also contributed by buying 75 school uniforms for pupils at Galpothawala (see top picture). A clean water supply and the tap (pictured) were funded by recent LHS donations.
