Year 7 Activity Day Just 10 days after joining LHS the new year 7 pupils enjoyed a range of African inspired activities. In groups led by Drum Roots, every girl had the opportunity to play the drums, to dance and to decorate masks before joining together in a fashion parade to show the traditional outfits they had made during the afternoon from recycled materials.

The Food Room Before...
During the summer break the food room at LHS has undergone a major refurbishment. The old room was very outdated and research suggested that most of it was installed back in the seventies with some alterations made 20 years later as interest in the subject grew and we needed to accommodate larger classes. It has been an exciting and at times somewhat challenging experience but the new facilities are now in use and we are hoping to organise a special event later in the autumn term to mark the occasion.

The Diamond Jubilee & Picnic The Diamond Jubilee
To celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee the whole school was invited to take part in producing a piece of art to be displayed outside. Over 400 members of the school have taken part in decorating clay tiles which have been glazed and assembled to form a large crown. This now has pride of place in the quad.
Picnic
On Friday 1 June the girls enjoyed a jubilee picnic at lunchtime with union jack sandwich boxes and red, white and blue cupcakes. One form even offered to take photographs with ‘a member of the Royal Family’ to raise funds for their form charity.

Olympics On 3 July the Olympic Torch came through Loughborough. Everyone from LHS joined the huge crowds gathered in the Market Place to catch a glimpse of the torch passing by. LES Music School choirs and bands were on hand to entertain us while we waited.
The 2012 Prize for Olympic Endeavour, initiated by the leavers of 2012, encompasses the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship and is awarded to an LHS girl who displays all round enthusiasm, spirit and dedication at school. Congratulations to Sarah McCarthy, the winner of the inaugural award.
We have been fortunate to have the Olympic torch in school recently and girls were able to have their photograph taken with it in return for a donation to charity. The charity prefects are pictured with the torch. After a rigorous application process Ruth Parker was selected to be a London Ambassador during the summer games of 2012. She spent three separate days being trained in London learning all about the city and how to deal with customers of every kind. During the Games she spent six days in Hyde Park helping tourists from all over the world, giving them directions, information and guidance. Ruth was awarded a Mayor of London’s excellence badge for her service and says, “It was the opportunity of a lifetime and I can’t be more proud to have been a part of London 2012.” LHS Life | October 2012 | 5
Science
ULN Chemistry
ULN Chemistry Activities Day - In June, eight year 12 girls took part in a chemistry activity day at Leicester University where they were given the opportunity to synthesise an ester in the laboratories and then participated in a business game synthesising a drug for cancer. They took part in a quiz in the afternoon where Halisha Tanna won the session with Ellie Highton also putting in a top performance.
Get Set
GETSET! Engineering Event - During the summer holiday ten year 9 girls took part in an event which was based around planning, designing, building and racing a solar car. The girls visited the engineering labs at Loughborough University and were given a careers talk. All the girls represented the school very well and were praised for their engineering talent, enthusiasm and the innovative designs that they produced.
Nuffield Bursary
Rajaishree Armugam, now in year 13, was awarded a Nuffield Bursary which enabled her to participate in an exciting project at Loughborough University over the summer holidays. Rajaishree’s project report on digital mapping will be published within a paper written by her mentor making her one of the science world’s youngest published authors. She has been invited to an international conference and workshop in Salerno, Italy in October to present her work to global scientists. 6 | LHS Life | October 2012
Travel Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
D of E continues to be very popular in school with over 30 year 12 students embarking on the Gold Award this year. At the very beginning of the autumn term year 10 girls completed the qualifying expedition for their Bronze award. Training for the Silver and Gold expeditions is underway.
Cycling Display
National Cycling Week, in June, had the aim of promoting a healthy life style. Girls in years 7, 8 and 9 all watched a cycling display and those who brought their bicycles to school were able to learn a few new skills.
Montpellier
Once again this summer LHS linguists spent time in Montpellier combining the opportunity to improve their French with visiting the surrounding area, sightseeing and relaxing in the shade!
Geneva
In July, 64 pupils and teachers from LHS and LGS flew to Geneva for a five day music tour. The choir performed in Geneva Cathedral and everyone took part in concerts in Lausanne and the small town of Lugrin. The highlight for members of the Big Band was their participation in the Montreux Jazz Festival. The party also found time to enjoy a traditional fondue, sightseeing by Lake Geneva and a visit to the salt mines at Bex. LHS Life | October 2012 | 7
Celebration Prize Giving
This term we celebrated the success of all the girls at Senior Prize giving. The winners of the TH Simpson Trophy for Excellent Work in Year 11 are pictured. The guest speaker this year was Joanna Kavenna, author and Writer in Residence at St Peter’s College, Oxford. Dr Kavenna is an old girl of the school and spoke, amongst other things, of her memories of her time at LHS.
Leavers’ Ball
Cocktail Party
At the end of term year 13 students of LHS and LGS celebrated their time at the Endowed Schools at the annual Leavers’ Ball. A drinks reception and dinner were followed with dancing.
In June, year 11 girls marked the end of their GCSE exams with a cocktail party which they attended with their parents and teachers. A welcome opportunity to dress up and relax after all that hard work.
