Shadows & Reflections
Photography by Lauren Mitchell
Preface
When I started this project, I knew I wanted my subject to be SHADOWS and REFLECTIONS right away. I saw an artist do this same subject and I was instantly drawn to her work. REFLECTIONS can change the way a person sees something. Whether the REFLECTION is in a mirror, or water etc., it can completely distort the object being reflected. When I look into a REFLECTION, I feel as if I’m looking into a different dimension where everything is opposite than what you know. Looking into a REFLECTION is like looking into a world you didn’t know was there. SHADOWS add simplicity to an object that is so much more complex. It takes away all the details of the object that is causing the SHADOW to be there. I love how, depending on where the light is, SHADOWS can change the size of the object to be bigger or smaller, or can even change the shape completely. Sometimes, when you look at a SHADOW, you can’t even tell what object the shadow is made from. SHADOWS and REFLECTIONS are different in many ways, but they both feel similar to me. They are both intriguing. They both show worlds unknown to us. This is a book of photos that I think express this.
