Roots Canada P R O J E C T : Apparel graphics & private label branding CLIENT:

Established in 1973 as a natural footwear company, today Roots is Canada’s leading lifestyle brand. For four formative years, Louis Fishauf directed all of Roots’ visual branding, including advertising, in-store signage, packaging and the creation of several private-label brands. His graphic vision was instrumental in the launch of the Roots Athletics apparel line of printed tees and sweats. The phenomenal success of Roots Athletics propelled Roots out of its footwear niche and set the stage for success in the larger apparel market.

Club Monaco P R O J E C T : Retail branding CLIENT:

SIGNATURE IMAGE For the 1985 launch of the clothing retailer, Louis developed the chain’s signature image, which was based on the Casino in Monte Carlo. The casino became a brand icon, and was reinterpreted in the decor and facades of the retail outlets. Louis also designed hangtags, posters, signage and other miscellaneous items that helped define the retail chain’s graphic style.

Bata Retail P R O J E C T : In-store graphics CLIENT:

To enliven the retail environment, a fresh graphic theme was created for all Canadian Bata stores every six to eight weeks. The themes were generally seasonal, or tied to a special promotion, and the retail decor consisted of coordinated window signs, wall posters, shelf danglers, cardboard standups and other in-store display items. The award-winning campaign, which lasted for over four years, utilized the talents of many Reactor illustrators working under Louis Fishauf’ direction.

Molson Canadian is one of Canada’s most popular beer brands. In 1995 Louis Fishauf was hired by MacLaren Advertising to freshen the brand’s visual identity and packaging. He developed the iconic red maple leaf branding that is still in use (in a slightly updated form) more than twenty years later. The new graphic look was applied to all aspects of the brand’s promotion, including ads, signage and delivery trucks. Louis also created graphics for the initial launch of Molson Canadian’s “I Am Online” website.

TBWA Chiat Day PROJECT: Window murals CLIENT:

When the Toronto branch of multinational advertising agency TBWA/Chiat Day took over the ground floor space in their building at the foot of Lower Spadina Avenue, they commissioned Louis Fishauf to create a billboard-scale graphic mural to wrap around the exterior. The mural’s imagery playfully combined references

to the advertising business, the geographic location of the building and the Frank Gehry-designed office interior. Peekaboo cutouts and varying levels of opacity allowed passers-by to glimpse into the interior, while still providing privacy for agency staff and clients. The graphic panels were digitally output and applied to the street-level plate glass windows.

Working closely with Alias’ in-house design team, Louis guided Maya’s look and feel from its initial product launch in 1998 until the 2006 sale of Alias Systems to US software giant Autodesk.
