Design Projects during studies 2009
Thesis project: Housing complex at Perama The project concerns the development of an urban housing complex on a disused industrial site, located at the periphery of the town of Perama, near a slum neighbourhood at the far end of the harbour of Piraeus. The main goal is to design a new urban environment containing both private housing and public uses, incorporating the distinctive identity of the surrounding neighbourhood and the industrial character of the wider area, so that it functions as an extension of the existing settlement and not as an “intrusion” in an already established urban landscape. Supervisor: Professor P. Dragonas!
2008
Urban design project: the “Olive Grove” archaeological park The project refers to the design and implementation of an archaeological park at the west side of Acropolis along the ancient Holy Road (Iera odos). A 3-level development is introduced, linking the archaeological excavations (level -1) to a pedestrian plateau (level o) and to restoration and administration services (level +1). Supervisor: Professor G. Patronis
2008
Urban design project: “Streets of water: streams within the urban space” The project refers to the regeneration of the banks of one of the most ancient streams of Patras –Milichos. Interpreting the given site as a transmuting landscape, the construction of a linear park along the riverbank is proposed, containing transient, changeable uses and flexible activities.
Supervisor: Professor G. Patronis 2007
Design project: Tensile construction - shelter for outdoor activities and events. This project refers to a proposal for the construction of a sheltered space which connects the laboratories of the School of Architecture with a multi-functional space hosting various activities and events connected to architecture. Supervisor: Lecturer M. Vrodisi
2007
Architectural design project: “Un_Folding Spaces”. Library and archives building A continuous flexible element, unfolding like a ribbon creates fluid spaces and connects the buildings of Library (the contemporary documents and media resources) and Archives (history and tradition), trying to express through design the flowing character of information and the constant interaction between past and present knowledge Supervisor: Professor N. Kazeros
2006
Architectural design project: Restoration of historical buildings in Patras. This project included the drawing of the plans of the selected buildings and presenting proposals for their restoration to their initial form and status. Supervisors: Professors P. Koufopoulos, S. Mamaloukos
2006
Urban design (interactive) project: Moving within the city’s “terrain vagues” Urban voids (terrain vagues) are being redefined into new urban interactive spots capable to hold a variety of events and actions. Supervisors: Professors V. Bouzas, D. Giannisis
2005
Architectural design project: “Re-designing the Athenian model of urban block of flats” The main functions of the urban block of flats, known as the “Athenian model” is being reconsidered and redesigned so that it meets the heterogeneous demands of contemporary society. The existing model is reshaped, while its characteristic elements are kept, improved and rearranged. Supervisor: Professor Y. Aesopos
2005
Interior design project: “xyz- creating a meeting point” This project concerns the design of an interior meeting point for students of the School of Architecture in Patras. Basic parameters that led the design included: limited space offered, low cost, and multiple functions of the venue. Supervisor: Professor I. Kostadopoulos
2004
Architectural design project: Museum of the Aquatic World This project concerns the design of a multi-functional space, which combines an aquarium with exhibition spaces, restaurant and a bookshop.
Supervisor: Professor D. Giannisis Research projects during studies 2009
Thesis research project: “New formats for living”: re-defining the apartment in contemporary housing The research focused on the contemporary design trends of multiresidential housing in European cities from 1990 until today. I elaborated the argument that in our times housing design is not based on the model of “average user’ and “average family’ as it happened some decades ago, but instead it tries to meet the contemporary heterogeneous needs and life styles of city dwellers, leading to a high diversity of different dwelling types through flexible and adaptable design; also becoming a real alternative to suburban living, offering a range of new identities to urban housing. Supervisor: Professor P. Dragonas
2003-2008
