The USO was formed in 1941 to lift the spirits of the troops and their families. During World War II, the USO became the G.I.’s “home away from home” and began a tradition of entertaining the troops that continues today.

Today the USO has over 160 locations around the world in 14 countries. It is estimated the USO has served more than 35 million Americans over its history. USO has had a downtown San Antonio presence since the early 1940’s. The USO mission is to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. Between 1942 and 1964 there were about 30 “USO” activities scattered around San Antonio including a couple in the downtown area: the Jewish Welfare Board, Catholic Servicemen’s Center, and the Officers Center in the Casino Club, etc. These were all consolidated under one USO banner in 1964. In May 1989, the USO moved to its present location on the River Walk in the River Bend Parking garage (203 W. Market Street). San Antonio is now home to three USO locations with a fourth soon to open! The USO has a center in the San Antonio International Airport, Terminal B Baggage Claim. One at Military Entrance Processing Services (MEPS) on Ft. Sam Houston, introducing brand new service members and their families to the goodness the USO provides on the day they begin their military career. In the fall of 2016 a fourth state of the art, flagship, 6,000 sq. foot center will open at Ft. Sam Houston. San Antonio is one of five pilot sites to introduce the RP6 program connecting targeted resources for transitioning service members and their families in more efficient, effective, and positive ways on their path forward after military service. USO San Antonio is always by their side from the day they are sworn in until they transition into the next chapter of their lives after serving their country.

Quick Facts in 2015: H 100,690 military family members were served at San Antonio centers. H 60,239 troops & their families benefited from programs and events hosted by USO San Antonio.

H 157 USO Volunteers are the heart and soul of USO San Antonio. They contributed a grand total of 16,673 service hours (an average of 106 hours/volunteer). We have 9 staff members.

In 1799 Washington died. In 1833 a society was formed to raise funds to build Washington a memorial. In 1848 the cornerstone of the monument was laid but the project was abandoned again due to funding. In 1879 work on the monument resumed and was completed in 1884. It opened to the public in 1888 and at the time was the world’s tallest structure. For more than 110 years, H-E-B’s commitment and involvement in the community has been an important part of the way we do business. H-E-B is proud to support causes that are important to our customers and Partner employees including honoring the brave men and women who defend our nation’s freedom and their families through our Operation Appreciation initiative that focuses on internal and external recognition and support programs.

23 STATUE OF LIBERTY

SAN ANTONIO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MILITARY AFFAIRS

The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the U.S. by France to celebrate America’s first 100 years as a nation. It commemorates the alliance between France and the U.S. during the Revolutionary War. Her face and attire come from the Roman goddess Libertas, who represents freedom from tyranny and oppression. Her foot is raised as if she is continually on the move, forever bringing freedom to others.

24 LIBERTY BELL

AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION SOUTH TEXAS CHAPTER

Of all the battles our Armed Forces fight, suicide shouldn’t be one of them.  Suicide is a leading cause of death in the U.S., yet preventable. Among the military, the rates are much higher. The mission of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention South Texas Chapter is to save all lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide through advocacy, providing resources and supportive events.  Learn the warning signs at www.afsp.org/about-suicide

Saluting Those Who Serve Us Walmart will offer a job to any eligible veteran who has been honorably discharged since Memorial Day 2013. Walmart has a strong, ongoing commitment to supporting the brave men and women who have sacrificed on behalf of the safety and well-being of our nation. We believe it is our duty and honor to support our men and women in uniform not only when they are on the battlefield, but also when they return home and transition to civilian life. We also work to support veterans in areas beyond employment and job security by partnering with organizations such as Goodwill, Operation Homefront |and others that share our goal of supporting our military men and women and their families.
