The Official Magazine of the River Walk

Staff Curator of Paleontology and Geology, Thomas Adams, Ph.D. invites everyone to experience life-size prehistoric Texas giants at The Witte Museum’s newest exhibit, “Discover the Ice Age.” Dr. Adams is shown standing beside a Woolly Rhino.

What’s old is new again… San Antonio is a city rich with history and tradition, yet it also seems to be constantly reinventing itself. This remarkable balancing act of remembering and innovating is what makes San Antonio a vibrant place to live and visit. The July issue of RIO Magazine is dedicated to what’s new in our old city. The recent heavy rainfall throughout Texas created the Aquifer Tour in the Discovery Cavern at Natural Bridge Caverns. Topgolf, a high-tech driving range complete with swanky lounge, drinks and games opened in February to big audiences. Museum lovers will enjoy Ice Age, a new exhibit at the Witte Museum. And the newly opened DoSeum features hands-on activities galore for young minds and adults. The River Walk and downtown area also have a few new tricks up their sleeve with sculptures, menus, hotels and a decadent chocolate shop! Located within Hotel Emma at the Pearl Brewery is Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, a new restaurant that lives up to its’ name. Schakolad Chocolate Factory, a newly opened European-style shop features chocolates and truffles handmade, on-site. You’re never too old, and it’s never too late, to enjoy the River Walk! If you’re visiting for the first time, be prepared to have a blast! If you’re a repeat offender, as so many are, rest assured your favorites haunts are still there plus new things to keep you coming back for more.

[ By Susan Yerkes ]

There’s something enchanting about San Antonio’s richly textured blend of past and present. Long ago, Mark Twain called this one of the four truly unique cities in the United States. The magic still lives, thanks to historic preservation and imaginative adaptation. From magnificently preserved San Antonio Missions to the constantly evolving downtown streetscape and expanding River Walk, change is a constant here. Along with the iconic Alamo, San Antonio’s lush and lively downtown River Walk is the city’s best-known attraction. Things could have turned out differently, but for a visionary young architect named Robert Hugman. In the 1930s, when business leaders planned to pave over the river downtown, Hugman proposed another idea. He designed an “American Venice” – a shady, meandering stream lined with shops and cafes, where gondolas would ferry folks through the heart of the town. Some locals scoffed, but Hugman’s vision triumphed. This summer, a handsome bronze bust of the man who dreamed the River Walk will be placed on a tiny island on the River Walk, by the round tower of the 1800s Romanesque revival building where Hugman officed at Commerce and Market Streets. (Look for the Texas flag umbrellas of the Republic of Texas restaurant on the building’s river level.) The River Walk’s charm endures today. But even a dreamer like Hugman would be astonished at the way it has evolved. Many classic structures along the river have been transformed, and it’s far more accessible to all visitors, thanks to multiple ramps and strategically placed elevators. 14

RIO Magazine

And the River Walk itself has stretched miles beyond the best-known downtown “river bend.” Today, colorful dinner barges and water taxis pass through a river lock upstream to the River Walk’s art-enhanced Museum Reach. On the way, look for a larger-than-life bronze vaquero (a Mexican cowboy) driving his longhorn cattle up the banks to the new Briscoe Western Art Museum, built in and around the first San Antonio Public Library. The massive sculpture captures the rugged spirit of the Texas frontier, and the finest traditions of Western art, you’ll find inside the museum. Beyond the Briscoe, follow the River Walk up to the riverside plaza of the new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Like many of San Antonio’s repurposed historic buildings, the Tobin retains the original façade of the original mosaic tile-domed Municipal Auditorium. Try to see a concert, play or dance event in one of the Tobin’s three high-tech performing spaces. Upriver, the River Walk’s art-lined Museum Reach extends beyond the San Antonio Museum of Art to the urban buzz of the Pearl complex. Once a major brewery, the Pearl is now a mecca of cafes, cool apartments, upscale shops and offices. It also boasts a branch of the Culinary Institute of America. Sample master chefs’ creations at the CIA Bakery or dine at the elegant Nao. Pick up a copy of the newly published “American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio’s River,” at the Twig Bookshop, or order a custom-tailored guayabera shirt at Dos Carolinas. craft beers at the new Southerleigh restaurant and brewpub in the Pearl’s antique brew house, where pieces of the old brewery accent the décor downstairs and shiny new copper vats continue the brewing tradition upstairs. Check out a B-Cycle from the handy racks at the Pearl and start your own tour. (You’ll find B-Cycle racks at a host of popular locations downtown and along the river.) Just down from the Pearl, visit the San Antonio Museum of Art, in another classic old brewery building. Nearby, check out hip new gathering spots like Rosella Coffee or The Luxury, a popular patio café (don’t miss the French fries here!)

If you’ve worked up a thirst after a day of touring, follow the trail of “pastmeets-present” back downtown to the Esquire Tavern. This 1930s-era watering hole on Commerce Street claims the longest wooden bar in Texas (100 plus feet). Recently resurrected after a seedy decline, the Esquire is now a hip hangout serving top-shelf tequila, fried corn on the cob and Texas Wagyu ribeyes. Across the river from La Mansion del Rio Hotel, the more modern Iron Cactus Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar features a modern take on classic Tex-Mex, from citrus-tinged ceviche to veggie enchiladas.

Head north on Broadway to one of San Antonio’s hottest new attractions, the Do-Seum children’s museum. The striking, state-of-the-art building, just opened in June, is already winning national acclaim for its cool design and imaginative, interactive exhibits and activities. From the Spy Academy and Sensations Studio to an ADA-enabled treehouse and a friendly robot named Baxter, there’s tons of family fun.

Cap off your evening with a stroll down to Main Plaza and San Fernando Cathedral. The historic heart of the city since 1738, the cathedral is the perfect backdrop for “The San Antonio Saga,” a spectacular high-tech sound and light show designed to perfectly fit the beautiful old church’s façade. The flagstones of the plaza where the city was founded fill with visitors every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening for the free, 24-minute show. Go early to get a seat, or take a blanket and a picnic.

Across Broadway from the Do-Seum, the classic old Witte Museum offers cool respite from the summer heat with its new “Discover the Ice Age” exhibit. Life-sized mammoths, mastodons, a sabre-toothed tiger, paint a lively picture of North America 2.5 million years ago. While you’re at the Witte, take a side trip to the more recent past at the museum’s beautiful, airy South Texas Heritage Center, overlooking the river as it flows on through Brackenridge Park.

As the evening winds down, and you’re planning a new day, consider an excursion to the newest reaches of the River Walk, the 8-mile Mission Reach south of downtown. Follow the river through the Victorian mansions of the King William district to hip hot spots around the Blue Star Arts Complex. From there, the recently completed Mission Reach of the River Walk carries you by foot, bike or kayak, to the heart of San Antonio’s Spanish history – the beautifully preserved missions.

— Jim Bowie

Had Boudro’s been serving on the River Walk back then, Jim Bowie could have carved his Center Cut Top Sirloin with a butter knife. Prime steaks, Gulf Coast seafood and the best Margaritas around have made Boudro’s one of the Alamo City’s most loved restaurants. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Breakfast, Burgers AND Craft Beer alk on the River W

Charlie Wants A Burger Sports Bar is your River Walk stop for an early breakfast, juicy burgers, craft beer and hand-crafted margaritas. This locally owned restaurant features a River Walk patio and upstairs balcony excellent for people watching, but if it’s sport you’d rather watch Charlie’s has 11 big screen TVs upstairs and downstairs. The restaurant embraces the River Walk with open air seating inside and an upstairs loft. No worries if the temperature is triple jalapeno hot, the AC will be blasting. Charlie’s burgers are big fat juicy ½ pound certified Angus beef. Their patties are never frozen so you can be assured you are eating fresh beef. There is a burger on the menu for everyone from an “Old School” burger to burgers with totally Texas toppings. Charlie’s signature burger, the Juicy Lucy, is for serious cheese- lovers. Not a beefeater, Charlie has you covered with a lamb burger, salmon burger and veggie burger. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the craft beer selections and can recommend a craft beer to pair with your meal. If you have a huge appetite then Charlie’s 2 LB Burger Challenge is for you! If one person finishes the burger, fries and onion rings in one hour without leaving the table, then the meal is on the house with a free “I Made the Burger Obey” 2 LB Challenge t-shirt. This burger is large enough to feed a family of four. It’s perfect for sharing and a good value. Although Charlie’s is renowned for its burgers, the menu also includes, baby back ribs, salads, sandwiches, tacos, wraps and hot dogs. A “Little Leaguers” Menu for kids features mini mouth-watering sliders. In case you didn’t know, July is National Hot Dog and Ice Cream month! Celebrate with Charlie’s Texas Chili Dog and a thick, velvety shake. For adults only, Charlie has “Boozy” shakes too! If you are looking to kick back and relax after a day of seeing of the sights, check into Charlie’s for Happy Hour, 3 – 6 p.m. daily. Charlie’s legendary, signature drink is the hot pink Cactus Rita made with prickly pears soaked in gold tequila. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Q: A:

How do you tell if someone is from Texas? Just give them a few minutes and they will tell you.

Texans are proud of their state, heritage and history and for good reason.

San Antonio Little Known FactsH July 8, 1718 held at the new Mission San Antonio de Valero, later known as the Alamo, was the first baptism, as reflected in the baptismal register of the mission. H The Alamo’s famous façade was not part of the original building. The U.S. Army added it when repairs were made in 1850 and it was used as a depot. H In the original plans presented in 1929, River Walk architect Robert H. H. Hugman wanted to name the San Antonio attraction “The Shops of Romula and Aragon.” Thankfully, that didn’t catch on. H Barbed wire took off in the United States in 1876 after a dazzling promotional stunt in Alamo Plaza, where it was used to fence a herd of longhorns. H San Antonian Sam Maverick let his young calves run around without brands, thus unbranded calves in the area were known to be Maverick’s and the name maverick came to mean any young unbranded calf. H In 1985, the Fairmount Hotel was painstakingly moved about five blocks from Commerce and Bowie streets, the current site of the Marriott Rivercenter hotel, to its current spot at South Alamo and Nueva streets, where it came to rest six days later. It is largest building ever moved in one piece.

Downtown

and the beat goes on By Bob McCullough

Like a beating heart, the San Antonio River has pumped new life into the community ever since a settlement sprang up on its banks in the name of St. Anthony. The rythm has intensified with major developments on or near the Paseo del Rio (River Walk) and announcements of more good things to come. Throughout three-plus centuries of San Antonio recorded history, the river has been a strong magnet, creating a never-ending desire among both visitors and residents to head down by the river side. The most-prominent recent additions include the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, formerly the Municipal Auditorium that served as a cavernous community gathering place beginning in 1926, and The Pearl, the transformation of the dormant Pearl Brewery site just north of downtown into residential and commercial spaces as well as a haven of dining and entertainment options. A fire in 1979 devastated the Municipal Auditorium yet ultimately prompted new thinking about a world-class performance center. Designers of the 34

RIO Magazine

Tobin kept the façade but totally changed the auditorium into three venues – the H-E-B Performance Hall that can accommodate up to 2,000, the 250-seat Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater and the River Walk Plaza and its 32-foot video screen, which hosts outdoor concerts and family events for up to 600. Since its grand opening last September, the $203 million Tobin Center has been a qualitative and quantitative hit with its eclectic mix of concerts, comedians, theatrical shows and dance, plus performances by its 10 resident companies spanning the artistic spectrum from ballet to opera to the San Antonio Symphony. First-quarter 2015 rankings of entertainment venues by Pollstar, the concert industry’s leading trade publication, placed The Tobin 29th in the world, 19th in the U. S. and first in Texas. In addition to applauding great performances, patrons praise The Tobin as a single destination for an entire evening out. They can enjoy Taste pre-show dining on selected dates that includes a buffet with chefperformance, salad and dessert stations. Reservations at (210) 212-0925 or dining@TobinCenter.org are strongly recommended. The lineup of www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

upcoming Tobin Center productions can be found at www.TobinCenter.org. Also situated to the north of downtown and upstream on the Paseo del Rio’s Museum Reach, The Pearl and its ever-expanding mix of residential and commercial elements continues to pulsate with activity. This 22-acre complex brewed beer from 1883 to 2001, but today it’s become an eclectic gathering spot for sampling new brews, delightful dining and year-round entertainment.

The Pearl Amphitheater on the San Antonio River often serves as the scenic site for musical and other special activities.

Currently all eyes are on the conversion of the brew house into first-class lodging – the 146-room Hotel Emma that’s scheduled to open Oct. 1. Its design will be a mix of Victorian and South Texas touches along with its industrial, beer-brewing heritage, and its amenities will include a restaurant, bar, in-room service and a gourmet market showcasing locally sourced goods. Elsewhere at The Pearl, more than two dozen shops and restaurants beckon including NAO New World Flavors, an affiliate of The Culinary Institute of America. The Pearl Farmers Market every Saturday morning features approximately 50 vendors, and special events such as the Échale Latin Music Estyles block party on Labor Day weekend dot the calendar. The Pearl Amphitheater on the San Antonio River often serves as the scenic site for musical and other special activities. The latest information about what’s happening is readily available at www.AtPearl.com.

In addition to the lustrous Pearl, smaller gems like the Schakolad Chocolate Factory at 112 Broadway shine in the urban environment. Schakolad, within easy walking distance of the River Walk and downtown hotels, prides itself on creating decadent chocolates in-house. A preview of tasty treats at the new factory can be accessed at www.schakolad. com/store49. As a result of so much vibrancy in the center city, VIA Metropolitan Transit has introduced a new circulator service called “The E” that runs along Commerce and Market streets as well as St. Mary’s and Navarro streets. The six-month pilot program, which uses specially branded orange trolleys, serves major entertainment venues, hotels, restaurants, cultural sites and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from 6 p.m. to midnight Tuesdays through Saturdays. Thanks to collaboration with VIA’s partners, riders can enjoy The E for free. To learn more, visit www.VIAinfo.net/E. The Tobin and The Pearl constitute major achievements for San Antonio, and they’ve spurred talk of more excitement on the horizon such as a 250-room, AC by Marriott hotel on the San Antonio River’s main channel; a new master plan for Alamo Plaza; the redevelopment of Houston Street, a major east-west thoroughfare; and the revitalization of Hemisfair Plaza, to name a few. But for now, the heartbeat of San Antonio remains strong, thanks in large measure to a river that’s been nourishing as well as invigorating the city for centuries.

THE new

GRUENE

AUNFELS

If you don’t discover your inner-child during a visit to the new DoSeum, then you just aren’t trying. In a word, it’s an enormous, humungous, gigantic, stupendous, abundant, abounding, astonishing, astounding, wondrous world for kids of all ages. Media hype tout it was designed by engineers, architects, educators and scientists. But after one visit you will swear it’s pure magic. The fantabulous new DoSeum has six, exciting indoor galleries: Sensations Studio, Explore, Innovation Station, Spy Academy, Imagine It! and Little Town. The main entrance hall musical staircase is brought to you by the SEGUIN same people who crea ted the giant floor piano in the Tom Hanks classic movie, “Big.” Incredible outdoor play areas include a tree house with wheelchair accessibility. An enormous oak tree with wood carved seating serves as an outdoor storytelling place and a third outdoor area offers plenty of chances to get wet while having fun and learning. Bring a towel with you or buy a towel in the gift shop. And be sure to dress the kids in clothes that can get wet. “Phun with physics” is what the Sensations Studio Gallery is all about. Have a “science jam session” in the DJ mixing station. Observe light and sound phenomena using everyday tools and objects, play -Willy Wonka with light and mirrors, experiment with color by dropping water balloons full of paint off the balcony, draw with light, build a laser maze, play in the outdoor bubble yard or rest under the solar tree. Whew!

“We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.”

The Explore Gallery is the home of many maps, a multitude of models and a sundry of shifting scales. This super space encourages kids to discover and even question their place in the world. Using tech-savvy, interactive exhibits,

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

SEUM By Carole Miller

kids explore and connect to other parts of the globe. Explore is also the new home to Powerball Hall, a frenetic, gravity-defying ball exhibit with all kinds of pulleys, gears, flippers, blowers and launchers.

“You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

-Dr. Seuss

“Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation and 2% butterscotch ripple.”

If at first they don’t succeed, all the better. While visiting Innovation Station, kids are encouraged to evaluate, try, fail, re-evaluate and try again. Innovation begins with tinkering and it is here that -Willy Wonka future engineers get their start by programming robots, designing and building bridges, floating objects in columns of air and exploring the mysteries of magnets. In the Innovation Station gallery, children use real tools to solve engineering challenges in the perfect place to imagine, create and build. Innovation station even has a resident giant robot named Baxter that kids can program. Wow! Agent 007 wishes he had this kind of training! One of the only exhibits of its kind in the country, Spy Academy teaches math the same way moms slip vegetables into casseroles or smoothies--without kids knowing it. “Shaken not stirred.” While “enrolled” in Spy Academy, -James Bond young spies-intraining use their wits to solve clues, make codes, break codes and work their way through top secret missions. Spy Academy “recruits” can return again and again to unlock new levels and eventually achieve the coveted title of Master Spy.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere..”

Ever wish you could jump into those paintings with Mary Poppins and join her and Bert on their jolly ‘oliday? The Imagine It! gallery puts kids in the middle of the -Albert Einstein action and lets their giant imaginations soar so they can develop their own stories. There are paths, sound effects, a playful landscape and costumes to help kids write, animate and record their own stories with stop-motion animation tools. And when their movie masterpiece is finished, they can email it to themselves!

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

-Dr. Seuss

In this adorable, miniature-sized metropolis, kids can interact and improve their delightful, tiny motor skills in a town that is, according to Goldilocks, not too big and not too small. In Little Town, children from six months to five years of age can playact in a charming little townscape featuring a kid-sized bank, grocery store, veterinarian’s office, airplane, food truck and Molly Trolley.

The site of the museum was formerly a car lot. Today it is more than 26,000 square feet of indoor exhibit space and 39,000 square feet of outdoor exhibit play space in the West and East Yards. The West Yard is home to -Joni Mitchell (sorta) the 26-foot-high DoSeum Treehouse, one of the most significant free-standing outdoor treehouses in the country. This is the place for utilizing gross motor skills and challenging kids to learn by doing and running around.

They put up paradise and unpaved a parking lot.

42

RIO Magazine

The East Yard, on the other hand, is a zen place for relaxing, regathering and re-generating. It has a tranquil fountain, eco-pond and shallow children’s river (we’re talking inches). But, most importantly, kids are welcome to get in and splash around in all the water features. And who hasn’t wanted to jump in a fountain at least once during their childhood? In addition to being generally awesome, the DoSeum is about as green as green can get. Solar panels on the roof produce approximately 20 percent of the facility’s energy. Ninety percent of daily waste materials are recycled. The water reclamation system captures approximately 180,000 gallons per year from the museum’s HVAC system for on-site irrigation. Storm water runoff from the street is filtered through two natural bioswales that send the water back into the San Antonio River. Reused materials were incorporated wherever possible in the construction of the facility and 98 percent of construction waste was recycled. And at least 50 percent of the museum’s outdoor footprint was restored with native or adopted vegetation to help promote biodiversity. Allow at least 4 hours to experience the museum which closes at 6pm. The DoSeum is located at 2800 Broadway, about 6 minutes from downtown. Admission is $11 for everyone one and older. Museum hours: Mon-Sat (10 am-6 pm), Sun (noon-6 p.m.). (210)212-4453. www.TheDoSeum.org

IN THE SWING OF THINGS By Lucille Sims Thomas

Topgolf has 50 golf bays that allow 6 players at a time to shoot at 11 targets.

Looking for a fun, affordable adventure to keep everyone in the family entertained? Look no further than Topgolf. Not a golfer? No problem! Topgolf is a three-story entertainment facility themed around golf. Most guests are not even golfers and 30 percent of visitors don’t play golf outside of Topgolf. Admission into Topgolf is free and there are plenty of free things to do; shuffleboard, fooseball, pool tables and KNEX on the 1st floor and Bear Pong, Jenga and basketball on the third floor roof top terrace. Food and beverage options are plentiful—including three bars. The largest one, the Terrace Bar, is an open air sports bar with fire pits, 60 seats, 30 tables, 30 televisions and depending on the day, a stage with live music and deejays. It also offers a full food and beverage menu. Located just 20 minutes from downtown San Antonio, Topgolf provides all of the equipment needed to enjoy its facility and is open to guests of all ages. If you can hold a golf club and swing then you’re sure to have fun. Upon arrival at a bay, golfers will find a full set of clubs with staff members who are ready and eager to assist by offering quick lessons on how to swing, what a stance should look like and how to keep the club head square. Most visitors spend about an hour and half to two hours in the bays. It is a computerized game with players hitting live golf balls with GPS microchips 46

out to targets that are 15 yards and 25 yards away and 30 feet in diameter. The microchip track golfers’ scores and distances in real time and displays them on a screen. Six players at a time can shoot at 11 targets.

Golfing bays range from $20 to $40 an hour depending on the time of day but a maximum of six guests can split the cost of one golf bay. To avoid waiting, groups of 12 or more are encouraged to make reservations through the sales team for golf, food and beverage packages. For those who want to get more serious about golf, Topgolf is a teaching facility. They have on site PGA professionals who offer a full range of lesson packages. Topgolf is a very popular destination; open 9am until midnight Sundays through Thursdays and Fridays 9am-1am, Saturdays 8am-1am. Off-peak times, which are the best times to visit, are during the early hours of the day Monday through Thursday. Wait times increase during the evening hours and the facility is busy all day on Fridays and Saturdays with Sunday the busiest day of all. Topgolf is located on 14 acres at 5539 North Loop 1604 West Ave. and features 50 bays. For more information, call 210-202-2694 or topgolf.com

Natural Bridge Caverns Adventure

HIGH

& Deep Opened in 1964, Natural Bridge Caverns is one of the most treasured natural attractions in Texas offering adventure that runs deep and high; 180 feet below ground or 60 feet in the air—to be exact.

The Discovery Tour which goes 180 feet below ground, is the original and most popular cavern tour, introducing guests to a world of natural beauty and amazement. The Hidden Passages tour offers another world-class cave to explore, where darkness and shadows dance across delicate structures and mystery waits in every corner. With either tour you will marvel at how little drops of water and the slow passage of time have formed massive otherworldly formations. The caverns stay a constant 70 degrees year-round making a visit to Natural Bridge Caverns the perfect summertime entertainment. The Canopy Challenge Zip Lines allow guests the option of snapping into a harness and flying high across the landscape of the Texas Hill Country. Visitors who like testing their balance and fear of heights can visit the Canopy Challenge Explorer Course, where they are given 30 minutes to grapple their way to the top of the 60-foot, four-tier adventure course. A different sort of adventure awaits you at ground level, in the AMAZEn’ Ranch Roundup , where twists and turns await you through a 5,000 square foot outdoor maze. Time how long it takes to find each checkpoint and your way out! The winter of 2015 will showcase the second annual Christmas at the Caverns, featuring the AMAZE’n’ Reindeer Roundup, a Country Christmas Hayride and two underground Christmas cave shows, Caroling in the Caverns and Journey to Bethlehem. After a Natural Bridge Cavern adventure relax, shop and enjoy refreshments in Discovery Village.

The Ultimate Ride By Ron Aaron Eisenberg

Spending a day tubing on one of San Antonio’s rivers is nothing new for locals and visitors however, the highly publicized spring rain throughout Texas has turned a fun day into the ultimate ride! Best of all, the only skill needed is the ability to relax and float along on an oversized inner tube while enjoying spectacular scenery. A tubing outfitter can provide everything needed for a float including lifejackets! And there are dozens of outfitters from which to choose. Outfitter rent the tubes and drive participants to drop off points up stream and pick up downstream.

For a list of river outfitters: www.innewbraunfels.com/visit/play/river-outfitters A cooler filled with snacks and beverages to take along makes for a floating party. And if travelling with a group friends ask for tubes to be hooked together and “train down the river.” The two primary rivers for tubing in our area are the Comal and the Guadalupe: The Comal River is a spring-fed natural flowing body of water that has attracted visitors to New Braunfels (just north of San Antonio) for generations. The headwaters spring up from the Edwards Aquifer, flowing through Landa Park in New Braunfels, bordering Schlitterbahn Waterpark, and eventually merging with the Guadalupe River. Most of the New Braunfels area tubing outfitters are less than a 40 minute drive from downtown San Antonio. The Comal River is one of the shortest navigable waterways in the United States. The New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce says the water temperature is a steady 70-72 degrees year round, which makes it refreshing in the Texas summer heat and warm enough for a morning swim in the winter months. The other major river for tubing is the Guadalupe River. Its headwaters are near Kerrville, Texas. The river eventually flows into Canyon Lake. Water released from the Canyon Lake dam creates what most Texans know as a top location for summer tubing! Many visitors stay along River Road and enjoy the Guadalupe from their campsites or cabins. But the river and tubing outfitters are close enough to San Antonio to make a day trip for tubing a possibility. The outfitters, campsites are a 40-50 minute drive from San Antonio. As the Guadalupe comes out of the bottom of the reservoir, it is very cold -- cold enough to cool off the hottest Texas summer! But water releases from Canyon Lake fluctuate, so it is best to contact one of the many River Outfitters to ensure you have a great, safe time on the water. 50

Tubing Etiquette and Fine Points •

Sunscreen is a must- this is Texas – outfitters sell

Footwear needed - The rivers have natural rocky and uneven bottoms

Drinking Water - trips range from 1-4 hours. You’ll get thirsty

A swimsuit – hats are good too

Life jacket-most outfitters rent them

Food- bring with, to enjoy while floating-finger foods work best

Drinks are welcome in closed containers BEFORE entering the park. However NO glass or Styrofoam is allowed. It is best to check with the outfitter about alcoholic beverages before bringing

Ability to swim is important. Most outfitters require participants be able to swim. Please also consider any physical limitations

Kids are welcome, however “no one under six years of age on the Guadalupe and three years of age on the Comal.” Check with your outfitter

$15 per tube and up to $20 for all day shuttle pass.

Tubing is not dangerous if you use common sense, are realistic about what you can do, follow the guidelines/rules provided by outfitters at a pre-float safety briefing, stay alert and are reasonably cautious. The Comal and Guadalupe Rivers are not a theme park, they are all natural attractions and river flow, length of float times, age appropriateness based on current strength, and more can change daily due to weather and other circumstances. Check with an outfitter for the latest information.

And, remember these three simple rules:

1

2 3

No littering in the rivers – litter bags are available to take with you as well as plenty of trash containers at outfitters and in the parks. Ask for a “Mesh Bag,” they are free. No trespassing on private property along the rivers. Most of the property along the river is private and off limits – please access the river only in public areas. Your outfitter will guide you. No jumping off area bridges, trees, or other natural or manmade things into the river or onto the ground. Local emergency responders have a lot of experience helping those who have!

Tubing Texas rivers is a blast. You will be glad you tried it. And odds are you will come back again and again. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
