Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com
For me, November is the season to adopt an attitude of gratitude. I like to pause before the big rush of the holiday season, and take stock of all the good in my life. Of course, health and family are at the top of the list but I would be remiss if I didn’t express gratitude for my hometown, San Antonio. I like being a Texan but I love living in San Antonio. It is the biggest little town anywhere. My thankfulness begins way back when the leaders of San Antonio exhibited tremendous vision opting to tame the San Antonio River with damns and floodgates and create the beautiful River Walk in lieu of paving it over and making underground drainage. Each generation has built on their predecessor’s vision, dreams and direction. The story To Protect & Preserve page 12 provides a glimpse into the story. An entertaining 10-minute video on the River Walk’s official YouTube channel goes into even greater detail. Visit www.youtube.com, key words: River Walk San Antonio Hugman. The greater San Antonio area has much to be thankful for as we celebrate this season of gratitude. Economic stability and wonderful people combine to make us a city on the rise. And if you are lucky enough to be here the day after Thanksgiving we hope you will enjoy the 34th annual Ford Holiday River Parade. Details and parade tickets are available on www.TheSanAntonioRiverWalk.com.

River Walk

Above: Robert H.H. Hugman, Father of the River Walk; Right: Hugman’s original name for the River Walk was Shops of Aragon And Romula.Opposite page: photos from top to bottom: 1st photo is a view from Villita Street looking towards Dolorosa and then Market streets. Flood gate number 4 is on the right. 2nd photo is of the Arneson River Theatre shortly after completion in 1940. 3rd photo features 1950 dinner barges parked in front of Casa Rio, the first restaurant on the River Walk. 4th photo is a 1960’s postcard.
Multitudes of San Antonio guests and locals take the beautiful Paseo del Rio—or River Walk— for granted, but thanks to a long line of visionaries and staunch supporters, it has maintained its allure as a world-renowned, must-see destination.

RIO Magazine
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
First came the visionaries like the San Antonio Conservation Society, followed by local architect Robert Hugman. A devastating flood in September 1921 claimed 50 lives and prompted a plan to bypass a downtown “horseshoe” bend in the San Antonio River, pave over it and thus turn the river into a storm sewer. But the Conservation Society fought the sewer idea and won. Enter Hugman in 1929 when he unveiled plans for what would become the River Walk. He agreed with the installation of gates for flood protection and isolating the river bend. Then commercial development, which he called “The Shops of Aragon and Romula,” could flourish. It took a while for Hugman’s ideas to gain support, but funding from the federal Works Progress Administration in 1939 enabled construction to begin. That produced 17,000 feet of walkways, some 20 bridges and extensive landscaping, including the planting of bald cypress trees that now tower over the Paseo del Rio. Hugman’s dreams of development along the River Walk started to come true in 1946 with the opening of Casa Rio, first restaurant on the river, and the launch of the first river barge. After dinner at Casa Rio, diners could take a cruise; after cruising proved to be so popular, diners could actually dine on a barge while enjoying the sights of downtown San Antonio. The world’s fair – Hemisfair in 1968 – focused renewed attention on the river and initiated the first of several Paseo del Rio expansions. A new section extended eastward from Casa Rio on the horseshoe bend to the new convention center and multi-purpose theater (now the Lila Cockrell Theater) in the shadow of the Tower of the Americas. Meanwhile, the first major riverfront hotel – the Hilton Palacio del Rio – was built in record time just across the river from Casa Rio to help accommodate the throngs of Hemisfair visitors. Other restaurant icons such as the Little Rhein Steakhouse and Kangaroo Court (that’s been succeeded by other dining spots) joined the party. The River Walk’s growing prominence as well as the need to protect and preserve such a treasure sparked creation of the Paseo del Rio Association in 1968. Through the years, the association has served as a guardian angel, a regulator of orderly growth and development and an enthusiastic booster of the walk and its many charms and celebrations. In 1981, another major hotel venture – the Hyatt Regency San Antonio – connected the River Walk with the Alamo, the famous Spanish mission that became a battleground in 1836. The connection known as the Paseo del Alamo funnels water through the lower level of the hotel to the river, thus linking San Antonio’s two most-prominent tourist attractions. Seven years later, the river walk expanded again into the heart of the new Rivercenter multi-story shopping mall. Literally behind (and below) the scenes in the 1980s, the river tunnel project meant new protection for the River Walk. Like massive moles in a sci-fi movie, construction crews bored 24-foot-in-diameter tunnels 150 feet underneath downtown San Antonio to divert floodwater. The tunnels got their first real workout in 1998 when millions of gallons of rainwater gushed through the piping but caused no damage to the city center. In 2009, a new section of the River Walk – the Museum Reach – stretched farther to the north where the abandoned Pearl Brewery was undergoing massive transformation into an urban residential and restaurant complex. A similar expansion to the south – the Mission Reach – opened two years later and provided greater access by kayak and bike to the historic Spanish missions that recently gained World Heritage status. Now San Antonio visitors can savor approximately 15 miles of landscaped pathways along the entire River Walk to the south, to the north and through the heart of the city. Keeping close watch over the River Walk are new bands of angels such as the San Antonio River Foundation, volunteers working with the blessing of the San Antonio River Authority to provide enhancements not funded by public monies. A good example is the effort to build Confluence Park where the river and San Pedro Creek meet on the Mission Reach. The Foundation plans to take a former South Side industrial site and make it into a learning center complete with an environmental educational pavilion and recreational facilities. Throughout almost a century of existence, the River Walk has attracted a large following of fans that have been connected by their strong desire to protect and conserve. In this season of Thanksgiving, that’s certainly a huge blessing to be thankful for.

— Sam Houston
Had Sam Houston and General Santa Anna sat at a Boudro’s riverside table to share a Blackened Prime Rib and a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, things may have turned out more amicably. So, if you want to write some Texas history for yourself, join us for lunch or dinner. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Q: A:
How do you tell if someone is from Texas? Just give them a few minutes and they will tell you.
Texans are proud of their state, heritage and history and for good reason.
Interesting facts about Texas H The stone that covers the State Capitol building in Austin, came from the quarry which became the Japanese Tea Gardens in Brackenridge Park near the San Antonio Zoo. H Sixteen Spanish families from the Canary Islands located here and set up their settlements in 1731, making San Antonio one of the oldest cities in the west. H Tropical Storm Claudette set a U. S. rainfall record of 43 in 24 hours in 1979, not far from San Antonio, in the city of Alvin, TX. H The State Mascot is the armadillo. The armadillo always has four babies. They have one egg that divides into four and they have either four males or four females. H The Bowie knife is named after Alamo hero Jim Bowie. However, the distinctive knife was actually designed by his brother Rezin. H Texas is larger than every country in Europe. If Texas were its own country it would be in the top 40 countries in the world, in terms of size. H Some of the most popular snack foods in Texas are Frito Pie (a bag of Fritos with chili and cheese poured into the bag), peanuts in Dr Pepper (no period after Dr), beef jerky, jalapenos and corn dogs.

Superheroes Protect the Alamo City!
By Carole Miller Faster than a river barge! More powerful than a margarita! Able to direct anyone to any tall building anywhere! Look! In the yellow shirt! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s an Amigo!
Disguised as mild-mannered guys (and gals) wearing bright yellow shirts and super-stylish straw hats, the Amigos are true superheroes who make downtown San Antonio cleaner, safer and a heck-of-a-lot friendlier for the law-abiding citizens of the Alamo City. Armed with two-way radios, a vast knowledge of Metropolis and certain secret superpowers, the Amigos are ever-so-strategically ever-present downtown, especially in high-pedestrian traffic areas at key times of the day. Got a question? Ask a Hospitality Amigo. Go ahead. Ask anything. Where’s the Alamo? What are the bus routes and numbers? Where’s the best margarita? Which hotels are haunted? Where can one get the best view of bats? Where are the current art exhibits? What can I do for fun around here? Who are the Spurs playing tonight? Where’s a good kid-friendly/pet-friendly/handicapped-friendly restaurant? Where can I buy a yellow shirt? Those two-way radios they carry aren’t just for show. Amigos are required to radio in to Amigo Headquarters if they don’t have an answer to your question. And if, for some crazy reason, you can’t find an amigo, their headquarters are located at 219 East Travis Street and 32

the Centro San Antonio Mobile Information Kiosk can be found at the Torch of Friendship at Alamo and Market Street Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, at La Villita on Wednesday, Market Square on Thursday and the Spanish Governor’s Palace on Sunday. The bright yellow kiosk serves a temporary location where anyone can receive important information about local attractions and activities on the fly. It is also a wi-fi hotspot and has mobile charging stations for almost all mobile devices that are impervious to kryptonite. Or join a Hospitality Amigo for an insider’s look at downtown. Every day at 10 a.m., the magical tour starts right in front of The Alamo. Rain or shine, the Amigos offer a fun-filled, action-packed, one-hour walking tour exploring some of the best spots in San Antonio including The Alamo, the River Walk and La Villita. But the Hospitality Amigos aren’t alone in their mighty quest of making San Antonio the best city in the world. They actually get by with a little help from their friends the Maintenance Amigos and the Streetscaping Amigos. The Maintenance Amigos bravely protect downtown San Antonio from dirt and grime and keep our city beautiful by cleaning the sidewalks, removing graffiti, picking up trash, power-washing and removing weeds from the lush scenery. Maintenance Amigos perform services seven days a week, 365 days a year and can be seen around town in their sporty, yellow pick-up trucks power-washing, picking up trash www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

and monitoring maintenance services in general. They can be spotted wearing their signature superhero garb consisting of a yellow shirt and khaki baseball cap. They, too, carry radios enabling them to be in constant communication with Amigo Headquarters. And as you stroll through the streets of downtown, if you find yourself inexplicably exclaiming, “Great Scott! What fine greenery!” You can thank the Streetscaping Amigos. These amigos have used their superhuman strength to bring the plant kingdom alive all along the streets of Metropolis. They have embellished the charm of downtown even more by providing more than 600 planters on light poles, stair rails, and anywhere else that could use a little more flora and fauna. In the past year alone, they have sown some 2,000 bougainvilleas and patiently planted more than 3,000 pansies and petunias. The Streetscaping Amigos can also be seen cruising around in “The Gator” (a John Deere utility vehicle) contentedly watering and maintaining the fruits of their labors. The Hospitality, Maintenance and Streetscaping Amigos are all the brainchild of Centro San Antonio. The Public Improvement District was launched in 1999 with the support of the downtown property owners to assess themselves for the supplemental services. Their vision is to foster a vibrant and prosperous downtown that benefits the entire San Antonio community, to be an advocate for downtown businesses and property owners, a catalyst for economic development in the inner core and a thought leader on important community issues.
Gracias, Amigos!

Southern Hospitality - San Antonio personifies Southern Hospitality; courteous drivers, volunteerism, kindness towards strangers and fundraising for a cause. Rest yourself on the porch, sit a spell, and sip on some sweet tea. Y’all come back now! First Responders - People who are willing to participate in
high-stress, high risk jobs to save lives and serve others. I feel safe knowing these men and women are out there, everyday, 24/7. And I am thankful to their families who also endure so much.
Good Food - San Antonio’s vibrant food scene is on the rise and
becoming world class; from farmers markets and food-trucks to 24hour restaurants offering tasty comfort food and renowned chef-run restaurants.
Public Parks - San Antonio is blessed with over 240 parks within our city limits. SA also boasts 47 miles of linear park trails called, Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails, that provide paths for nature walks, hiking and biking. Live Music - With over 60 live music venues in San Antonio you
are sure to find your sound playing somewhere. The range of venues is dazzling from the world-class Tobin Center and the historical Majestic Theatre to sing-a-long bars like Howl-at-the-Moon and Durty Nelly’s to intimate clubs blues/jazz like Room 414 at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel.
Public Libraries - In 1731 Benjamin Franklin let people subscribe to borrow his personal books. He is credited with the idea of “social libraries” or lending books. San Antonio has 27 public libraries complete with homework assistance, book clubs and computers. Clean & Safe Downtown - It’s a team effort that allows
our city to shine and makes everyone downtown feel comfortable working and visiting downtown. Thanks go to the combined efforts of San Antonio Police Department, San Antonio Bike Police, San Antonio Park Police (FYI, River Walk is a park) and the Centro San Antonio Amigo program our downtown area is both safe and clean.
The Arts - The arts are alive and doing well in San Antonio through theater, movies, galleries, museums, public art, art schools, art classes and of course art for sale. “First Friday” brings artisans to the sidewalks in Southtown, public art installations abound on the River Walk and the Debra Benditz Gallery features an array of guest artists with works for sale.
Cowboy Lifestyle - While I don’t see gun racks in the back of
trucks anymore like I did when I first moved here in the 1980’s, the cowboy persona is strong. Jeans, boots and a pressed shirt are still appropriate for dressy attire. Trucks are not referred to as cars. Country music is king and the King of Country Music, George Strait, lives in San Antonio.
Historic Preservation - Don’t tear it down! Fix it up, repurpose and reuse are words heard a lot around San Antonio. Old buildings, walls and streets provide character to our community. We treasure our 17C missions and the late gothic revival 1929 Tower Life Building complete with gargoyles as much as we do and the 1962 El Tropicano Riverwalk hotel.

Volunteer Spirit SEGUIN
By Susan Yerkes
The slogan “Uptown, Down Home” fits San Antonio to a Texas “T.” This is one of the friendliest cities you’ll ever visit. And the front lines of that friendliness are manned by volunteers. The volunteer spirit is deeply ingrained in San Antonio’s hallowed history. In 1836, when Texas declared independence, William Travis, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and the brave band of men who died fighting for freedom at the Alamo all volunteered to be there. These days, San Antonio’s civic-minded volunteers face far less hazardous duty. But they’re still an integral part of the colorful fabric of the city, from welcoming visitors to the much needed muscle to power a multitude of year-round fiestas and fun. Many visitors meet their first volunteer when they arrive at the San Antonio International Airport. Airport Ambassadors are trained volunteers who serve in the vanguard of hospitality for more than 8 million travelers who pass through the airport each year. You’ll know the Ambassadors by their denim vests, cowboy hats, official name tags and big smiles. Hundreds of them donate a minimum of four hours a week to the program, and many clock much more time. The masses of pins on their vests, tokens from appreciative visitors, are eye-catching testaments to their friendliness. They’re constantly on the lookout for travelers in need of directions, information, maps, coupons or details about how to get around town, the
Ambassadors are a great introduction to the friendly, Bienvenidos a San Antonio!
This month is a great time to meet folks helping out at some of the year’s biggest events. More than 400 friendly San Antonio folks young and old will help the small non-profit Paseo del Rio Association prepare for the 34th annual Ford Holiday River Parade, a spectacular procession on the river downtown on November 27. These folks do everything from setup and take-down 12,000 chairs along the river banks and then greet and guide the arriving throngs of spectators for the popular parade. In December Boy Scouts place 3,000 luminarias, bags with sand and a lit candle inside, along the River Walk each weekend, adding a traditional Mexican Christmas glow to the dazzling holiday lights in the trees. Each spring, volunteers hang hundreds of sponsored yellow ribbons along the River Walk to honor friends and loved ones in the military. Project Yellow Ribbon is in conjunction with Paseo’s televised and nationally syndicated America’s Armed Forces River Parade. And in early fall, more volunteers will greet food-lovers who come downtown for a three-night culinary experience featuring downtown and River Walk restaurants. Big amateur sporting events, particularly those that draw thousands of out-of-towners, also showcase our town’s volunteers. The non-profit San Antonio Sports organization coordinates local folks eager to help out.

Uptown, Downhome Volunteer Spirit conitnued
Nothing tops the tower
If you’re among the 10,000 or so visitors expected to attend this year’s SeaWorld Copa Rayados Internacional soccer tournament Nov. 26-30, you’ll encounter volunteers of all ages at all four of the stadium venues. For them, as for many San Antonians, Thanksgiving weekend is a great time to share the beauty of San Antonio with the world. The following weekend, Dec. 4-6, San Antonio Sports volunteers will turn out in force again for the Bexar County Games Super Series Winter National Baseball Tournament, which brings 8U through 16U division baseball teams from around the nation to town for a championship competition. That same weekend The Rock’n’Roll San Antonio Marathon, with its twoday Health and Fitness Expo, half a dozen races and rockin’ entertainment, will bring out one of San Antonio Sports’ biggest annual volunteer efforts. With more than 250,000 racers expected on downtown streets, it’s a giant job. Throughout the weekend, nearly 2,000 volunteers on the Race Crew will help man start and finish lines and water stations, and take care of myriad tasks that make the event run smoothly. You’ll see them cheering on the runners and providing help where it’s needed, adding that special San Antonio-style welcome to the event.
Exceptional dining at chart house
In early January each year, the Valero Alamo Bowl brings two top collegiate football teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 to town along with thousands of excited fans. Hundreds of San Antonio’s volunteers will be there, too, wearing the distinctive Alamo-shaped logo on their polo shirts and jackets. But the volunteers’ work actually starts each August, when an intense slate of pre-game events kicks off. From providing the people-power at high school football clinics and golf tournaments to helping promote the big game throughout the community, the volunteers give thousands of hours to make the Alamo Bowl a success. You’re sure to leave San Antonio with many memories of beautiful sights, lively fun and special moments. But you’ll also remember the warmth and friendliness of the San Antonio volunteers you meet during your stay. They’ve probably told you this, but it bears repeating: Y’all come back, now!

Thanks, Spurs, Thanks As San Antonians sit around the Thanksgiving table, we give thanks for our Spurs basketball team. They’re the whipped cream on our pumpkin pie, the cranberry sauce with our turkey. Not just for the five championship trophies they’ve brought home, but because they’re family! The Spurs players are the kind of guys every team and every town wants sitting around their Thanksgiving table. When the Spurs signed LaMarcus Aldridge, he asked to wear the same number he had worn throughout his career. But the Spurs had retired beloved Bruce Bowen’s Number 12, who played on three Spurs championship teams. General manager R.C. Buford approached Bowen, now an ESPN analyst, with Aldridge’s request, Bowen agreed instantly, telling the San Antonio Express-News he wanted the new player to “feel part of the family.” They make us proud. Forbes magazine named the Spurs the 2000s’ “Team of the Decade.” This year Kawhi Leonard brought home the Defensive Player of the Year Award. By a vote of nearly 300 NBA players Tim Duncan was awarded the 2014 – 2015 Twyman-Stokes award, for selfless play, leadership, and commitment and dedication to his team. The Spurs Coyote mascot snagged 44

an award for Video Skit of the Year at the NBA Mascots Conference in August. And like our city, the Spurs are culturally diverse, and they get along. In January, at an event following their 2014 Championship, President Obama praised the Spurs for their sportsmanship calling them the United Nations of basketball with more countries represented on the team than any other. Then the Spurs raised the bar by becoming the first NBA team with a woman coach. Becky Hammon coached the Spurs summer league team to the championship in July of 2015. They give new meaning to the word “loyalty.” David Robinson, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard started their careers as Spurs. Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili are still
together 13 years later. Sean Elliott, George Gervin, and David Robinson are spending their retirement here. Gervin played nine NBA seasons in San Antonio, and Robinson, who led the Spurs to their first NBA championship and played his entire 14-year career here, have sponsored schools named in their honor. Robinson donated millions during his career to an independent school in SA geared toward children from mixed communities. And like a proud family, we wear their jerseys and we fly flags from the windows of our cars. Every year during the NBA playoffs, the Dixie Flag Manufacturing Company flies a 30’ x 60’ “Go Spurs Go” flag on a 107 foot tall flagpole. We get Spurs images shaved into our haircuts, like the one of Aldridge by barber Rob Ferrell. Local artist Christopher Montoya painted a mural of the city skyline, a rainbow, and the Coyote hefting a basketball. We hold a giant love fest with a parade on the River Walk and a free celebration at the AT&T Center, every time our boys bring home a championship trophy – five and counting! And every corner of the city rings with the chant “Go, Spurs, Go!” www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Ornament goes on sale November 27th at select River Walk retailers.
! l a i c fi f O Now It’s In September 2015 archeologists discovered at the banks of the Rhine River in Germany what is believed to be the earliest evidence of souvenirs dating back 1,900 years. This is a timeless acknowledgment
hologram sticker”. Even with our upcoming River Walk consumables, whether it’s our mouth watering chips / salsa or our fresh beef jerky items will be the highest and organic quality.
of man’s desire to fondly remember a destination or vacation by bringing a piece of their experience home with them. The River Walk was built in the 1930’s and popularized as a vacation destination in 1968 when the World’s Fair came to San Antonio. The flood of souvenirs started almost immediately. Today at the banks of the San Antonio River Walk you soon will be able to find souvenir treasures to take home, too. Lots and lots of them. Coming soon to retailers and shops in and around the River Walk area will be a variety of items from apparel and accessories items like tees, tanks, hoodies, crew, shorts, loungewear, sleepwear, headwear, flip flops, to a lot of souvenirs and collectibles like key chains, magnets, can and bottle coolies, holiday ornaments, medallions, pins, and “Loteria-type” card games, etc. In 2015 the first “officially-licensed” River Walk merchandise program was softly launched. Why now? Three simple reasons: Quality, Authenticity and Support. Quality merchandise means every item you bring home will have undergone extensive approvals as to materials, durability and craftsmanship. The River Walk Tee-shirt, Sweat Shirt, or Polo, for example, that you buy will wash and wear like a dream for years to come providing you with many years of enjoyment. The same quality will go into everything sold whether it’s an ergonomically-designed water bottle to glow-in-the-dark magnets to a perfect fitting cap. Each item will carry the River Walk’s own good housekeeping seal of approval, its “officially-licensed hang tag and
Authenticity means that all River Walk merchandise will be like you’re buying “authentic” Spurs, NBA or NFL merchandise. Be sure to look for our “officiallylicensed River Walk merchandise hang tag” so you know you will be getting the best, and not some imitation or poor quality item. And, speaking of authenticity, your River Walk vendors and our community agencies will be taking an active roll in making sure you’re getting only “official-licensed” merchandise. Asking for and purchasing officially-licensed River Walk merchandise is a clear message of support to your beloved River Walk. Supporting the River Walk means a portion of each sale goes towards costly maintenance of the River Walk. It will also be used to produce bigger and better special events on the River Walk. Did you know that it takes a village to execute 27 events annually ranging from craft shows to the Ford Holiday River Parade, which attracts 125,000 people? It does. And, that’s why we’re allocating a portion of the proceeds from all “officiallylicensed River Walk merchandise” to go back to promotion, preservation and maintenance of the River Walk. Our mission is to protect the integrity of our River Walk logo and the special bond the River Walk has with the community and culture. We’ll also be encouraging that only “officiallylicensed River Walk merchandise” will be offered by retailers and shops alike and no cheap knock-offs or non-licensed items. The River Walk logo is like our symbol of excellence. Sadly, the now non-existent village on the Rhine River did not withstand the test of time. With your support of “officially-licensed River Walk merchandise”, the River Walk will be around for a long, long time.

RIVER WALK: A NO FLOOD ZONE Did you know the River Walk cannot flood due to a series of 6 flood gates and a lock and damn by Brooklyn Street. The Olmos Damn, located 5 miles north, also helps with water control downtown. The water level is adjusted by the opening and closing of the flood gates to ensure water never rises above the sidewalk level of the River Walk downtown.

In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
