THE OLD MARK “MATCHBOX” Before developing a new identity for MATCHBOX, we should examine and understand the design of the past look. The old MATCHBOX logo features the company’s name in a simple way, reflecting its mechanical, model making feels. The red and yellow of the wordmark makes it very eye-catching and energetic. The quotation marks deliver a nice emphasis on the achievement of company’s legend in producing miniature car toys.

WHAT WILL BE TRANSFORMED? The new MATCHBOX will expand beyond change of scale. The future will be transforming fun in all possible ways we could ever thought of.

NEW CONCEPTS FORMING NEW FUN The next step of the visual development is research and brainstorming. There are three main ideas which highlight our future direction and help to explore new visual system that fit our mission. We intend to use the letter “M” as a symbol to represent MATCHBOX, and apply the three ideas to the letter as a combination to present a meaningful and provoking mark.

LOGO RESEARCH FUTURE COMPETITIVE LOGOS A brand’s mark should be unique and standout from the competitor’s designs in the world. Through logo research, we will visually understand the overall concept and visual language from the other brand and avoid similarity.

SIMILAR LOGOS We intend to use letter “M” on the logo to represent MATCHBOX. We want to look into other design that help us bring inspiration and at the same time avoid any similarity to our future logo.

01 : FUN MATCHBOX’s former fun are from delicate research and calculation to be able to make live-like miniature replicate. It was from its intelligent effort to make the “fun” happened. The playfulness and importance of smart fun is lying in MATCHBOX’s history.

02 : TRANSFORMATION Future matchbox will broaden the idea of transformation beyond scaling. The letter M starts to turn into something else, representing the state of changing.

03 : REFLECTION Based on Matchbox’s history of making accurate car miniatures, the models can be taken as small scale reflections of the original automobile model. To execute this idea of reflection, I tried the representation of flipping the letter form M. Based on anatomy standpoint, M has natural symmetric structure. It has its potential to create mirroring effect as two equally divided parts flipping between sides.

DIGITAL SKETCHES After trying many sketches to explore ideas for our mark, we focus on the concept of “flip” as a representation to connect the idea of transformation.
