1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

In exploring architectural design, the architecture of the earth, spatial potentials and directions, mass and volumes must all be considered – these factors have implications on the techniques, designs and forms of the structural creations. Tectonics – the study of the harmony and discordance of spatial systems allows architects to fully understand the implications of designs above, below and in between ground spaces, and three tectonics; point/line/plane, frame and infill, and mass, explore this relationship with the earth in detail. The Earth – Architecture Design Studio course dives into these three concepts, exploring each in their separate details, as well as the relationships they form through their interactions with one another. These relationships characterise the inspiration behind concepts models created within this portfolio. Coming together, they bring the theme of Earth to life in the final architectural project.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Point is a basic unit. Line is the product of the basic units - points. A plane is a product of the lines. This close relationship of point line plane suggests continuity and infinity.

Lines formed by the structural elements of the infrastructure, continuity of this 3-dimensional structural element has transformed into a visual illusion of 2D plane of lines. ‘Distance’ has visually unified line into a plane.

Design Concept Inspired by the roof design of Liege rail station, this design demonstrates the inter-relationship among Point, Line and Plane. In the previous precedent, the driver for such a transition of elements is distance. A driving factor for the inter-relationship of elements will also be explored in this design. From the side perspective, the two planes are curved and intersect with each other at a line ( from the top view) and at a point (from the side view). This creation of line and point through the interaction of two planes demonstrates the inter-relationship of these three elements. The driving factor for the transition of elements is Time. Take the metaphor of a Tree. From the intersecting roots underneath the ground, to the growing imcomplete tree with branches start appearing, to the finally smooth plane which indicate maturity and completeness.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL Frame- conveying a language of solidity, universal and strength, It is commonly associated with construction and structural elements. Infill - symbolising dynamics. Combination of frame and infill will show strong material and idea contradiction but more often will achieve a sense of harmony.

SCUOLA DELL’INFANZIA , GUASTALLA ,2015 Mario Cucinella Architects The frame structure is formed from many vertical wooden elements that characterize the building installation and that echoes the motif of infusing into nature. This wood frame structure and glass facade gives lightness and a changing image of a typical school. This framed interior stimulates the child’s interaction with the surrounding green environment. Moreover, natural sunlight can light up the whole interior.

Conceptual Model Inspired by the precedent above, I am interested looking into the relationship of Fill and infill, in the precedent I studied, as we have learnt, Frame provides the structure for infill. And I questioned if it could be the other way round: ‘‘ The infill framed the frame in how frame can frame the infill at the same time.’’ I challenged this concept and went ahead in doing a physical model. By using plastic sheets to create an enclosed area around the cube, I fill the cube with water to demonstrate the concept above.

1.3 MASS Mass- ‘born of the earth’ (quote Peter Zumthor) can be expressed in terms of texture, weight and feel.

Tom Ford Ranch , Santa Fe New Mexico, USA 2012 Tadao Ando The ‘‘mass’’ above the mass creates a strong language of strength and power in this barren land. The closeness of the designed mass and the natural mass creates a strong compressive illusion.

The underground passage Good use of lighting that adequately lights up the underground without compromising the feeling of being under the mass. Natural texture of the walls and ground give a strong organic walling experience under the ground.

Design Concept 4 concepts and ideas I would like to demonstrate in this design task : Mass Postive and Negative Space Forced Circulation Texture of earth Using art and craft technique, I cut out the voids underground which would be my underground space, texturized with stone wall to give an organic feeling. Circulation is via the lift on the left which brings the explorers from ground level to basement 2 which would be a theatre. Stairs would then bring the explorers to Basement 1, the gallery session. Lastly, the lift would bring the explorers back to ground level. This section design also looks like an artwork.

3.3 CONCEPT My concept is using circulation as a driving element to connect the three tectonics elements in my design. My ‘‘secret’’ concept will also be revealed through the explorers’ experience when they circulate in the design. Inspired by Peter Zumthor’s Vals where users’ experience is brought out by texture, material and tactility, materials of the design will be a significant element in the design.

2.4 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT After getting feedback from the tutor, there are few aspects for improvement in this design. - Emphasis more on the experience and show how the experience would be like - Incorporate the discovery of history into the design - Explore further with the materials - Clearer circulation

The emphasis of this design is the circulation. Circulation drives the main experience of the explorers.

I have reconsidered my design according to the above aspects. A more thoughtful design has been introduced in the Final Design.

The experience has been separated into 3 phrases, according to the 3 distinct spaces designed. Firstly, the explorers will walk into an enclosed ramp passage on the ground floor, the history of Herring Island wil be revealed to the explorers. After that, the explorers will walk on the opened ramp, when the explorers get an extensive view of Herring Island and develop a new persception of Herring Island after the ‘history gallery’ session. A lift at the end of the ramp will bring explorers to the basement, a social congregation area. On ground level, there is a flat concrete path that allows the explorers to circulate around the Peck’s existing artwork (made of Harcourt granite).

Design Concept The three tectonic elements; point/line/plane, frame and infill, and mass, have been infused into this design, where the three elements interact with each other. The transitions of one element to the next can be seen through circulation of the site. The secret of the design lies in the history of Herring Island - in exploring this structure, users take the role of a personification of Herring Island itself. The development of the island goes through the journey of having a river channel, to being flooded, which the user experiences through being submerged in the water. Towards the end of the sculpture, the enclosed ramp’s is constructed from soil and other organic materials, giving the user the feeling and understanding of the next stage of Herring Island’s development - consolidation with soil. When resurfacing via the ramp, users feel the symbolisation of the complete creation of Herring Island into the land that it is today. Further exploration of the surrounding site allows users to engage with the sculptures on the island, to experience Herring Island as the site of Melbourne Festival’s “Environmental Sculpture” Park.

3.0 REFLECTION The three tectonics elements have inspired me in arranging spaces and user experience in my architectural design work. Weekly tasks of exploration into the three tectonics allows me to generate architectural structures based on the basic principles of objects, establishing aesthetics, atmospheres and order in my designs. Research and study has allowed me to explore different styles of architecture and develop my own sense of architectural evaluation based on the tectonic principles. I really enjoyed this learning experience. Progressing to my final design, I felt that I was equipped with the skill of strategically compositing spaces according to my concept and confidently presenting my ideas and thoughts with accurate architectural terminology. Earth is a studio that I feel passion for - the whole learning process has been a thoughtful experience. It makes me think: Design with a thinking.
