Certain investments carry a higher degree of risk than others and are, therefore, unsuitable for some investors. The value of investments, and the income from them, can go down as well as up, and you may not recover the amount of your initial investment. Before contemplating any investments, you should consult your wealth manger
Since 2008 this popular event has attracted an increasing number of dedicated connoisseurs of food, beers, wine and since last year - gin!! This year we have assembled an exciting mix of over 25 food stalls on the Market Place and for a second year Church House in Churchyard Walk, will host an exposition of eight superb wine merchants and two gin traders. Just in time for Christmas, the Market Place offers a plethora of delightful herbs and spices mingled with heady flavours of quality produce including cheeses, meats, vegetables and other festive fare to create a perfect sustenance with a rosy glow to counter the wintery days ahead. In Church House, the wine and gin aficionados will meet in their Elysium to sip ambrosia. A paltry £6 gains you entry into a cellar where wine merchants offer reds which are powerful yet balanced and whites with rich textures melded with classic aromas; both have lingering flavours. Also gins distilled with traditional botanicals offer a balanced bouquet of juniper and citrus.
Last year the Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse raised nearly £7,000 more than the previous years. This linked with our other fund raising initiatives enable us to assist national and international good causes plus local charities including Leisure Direct, Sue Ryder Stagenhoe, Breakaway@NHCVS, Herts MS Therapy Centre and Growing People.

We are delighted that Andrei Lussmann has agreed to be patron of this year’s festival. Andrei has been working in hospitality for 28 years. After gaining early experience with Forte and Bass while completing a Hospitality & Bussiness degree, he held senior positions at Pizza Express, Fish Diner and Corney & Barrow. In 2002, Andrei founded Lussmanns with the aim of bringing sustainable dining to the high street. Now with five independent, multi-award-winning restaurants in Hertfordshire including one in Sun Street Hitchin, Andrei continues to champion all things ethical, accessible and affordable. He is an Ambassador for the Sustainable Restaurant Association, a member of the Fish2Fork Chefs Club and was named UK Chef of the Year 2016 by the Marine Stewardship Council.
Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse
Introduction to this year’s Hitchin Wine and Food Festival Patron.
Andrei’s achievements have been recognised through a visit to Downing Street, by Lussmanns being voted ‘People’s Favourite@ in the national Independent on Sunday/ Food Made Good Awards 2016 and by The Good Food Guide recommending Lussmanns since 2010 as ‘doing Hertfordshire proud’. Andrei’s quote on being Patron this year: “Since one can remember, the spirit and lifeline of all our communities has been its town centre. A mini Mecca for bustling traders, a meeting of minds and an everevolving food scene. Hitchin Wine & Food Festival is essential in supporting the town and helping to galvanise the value of our traders. I am honoured to help with this Festival and appreciate all the local support we have enjoyed since opening on Sun Street a year ago”
Questions for Andrei: Why do you do what you do?
I anticipated becoming a Pilot, as many young boys do. However my mum suggested that I would be good at hospitality and as mums know best, my career had been decided and there was no turning back.
What makes your business special?
Lussmanns has pioneered the concept of sustainable dining and we are dedicated to making this a commercial success on the high street. We are fortunate to have staff that care about our business- what we do , how we do it and why we do it and work really hard to provide a first class service to all of our diners. Simple dishes, like our House Fishcakes and Steak Frites, which are very popular choices on our daily 12-7pm set price menu.
What is your favourite food and drink? Italian, with a good wine.
Anything new in the pipeline?
We’ve recently launched an ethical tapas menu at Lussmanns in Hitchin- the only one of our restaurants to have a diner’s bar and look forward to hearing what our patrons think of these new dishes.

Wine Tasting for Everyone Do you know your Merlot from your Malbec? Or your Chablis from your Chardonnay*? It may not matter if you don’t, but there is a growing thirst among wine lovers for a bit more information about what they are drinking. We are fortunate, in the UK to have access to a huge choice of wines and despite that, or maybe because of it, we tend to play safe and limit ourselves to a handful of trusted favourites. Hertfordshire Wine School will be at Church House during this year’s Food and Wine Festival, alongside various independent wine and gin distributors. They run fun and informal wine courses and tastings for people who like wine and want to know more. On a typical evening tasting you taste six or seven different wines, find out how wine is made, learn about grape varieties and discover which wine styles you prefer. In Hitchin, tastings include an ‘Introduction to Wine Tasting’ evening, a ‘Champagne & Sparkling Wines’ tasting and an ever-popular four-week ‘World of Wine’ course. Corporate and private tastings can be arranged and the school also runs professional qualifications as an approved programme provider of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). For more information, please contact David Rough on info@hertfordshirewineschool.com or visit www.hertfordshirewineschool.com *Chablis is the name of a wine from Northern France, always made from the Chardonnay grape variety!

Hitchin Junior Chef North Herts College’s Hart Kitchen Tilehouse Hitchin Rotary Club held its first Junior Chef competition in February this year. Hosted by North Herts College’s Hart Kitchen, with all the food donated by Waitrose, the event was a resounding success. 11 young people cooked an inspirational set of menus. Graham Chatham, Head Judge and Executive Chef at Daylesford Organics were supported by Stuart Dunlop of NHC and Simon Kirbyshire from Waitrose. The Winner of the Year 7 competition was Mia Caldwell. Year 8 winner was Paige Bains and Year 9/10 competition was Freya Edmondson. The award for overall Best Main for his delicious Sage and Mushroom Chicken in cream sauce, went to 12 year old, Edward Burbidge, with the overall Best Dessert being awarded to Freya Edmondson, age 14, for her Chocolate and Orange Mousse. “The standard of cooking was very high”, commented Stuart Dunlop, “many of these young people have the skills to choose this as a career “. Graham Chatham, who has 26 years experience as a top chef including The Langham, commented that “he would happily pay for Edward’s chicken dish”. He went on to say “I was very impressed, they were organised, very calm and the standard of cooking was to be applauded “. Feedback from the parents and the contestants has been glowing. One of the parents commented “She absolutely loved the experience. It was a great chance for her to do something she really enjoys, but also really good for her to think about what she needed to do/bring, what to cook, learn some new skills/dishes, be organised, etc. Everyone made her feel so comfortable and welcoming, and it was a really great experience for her.”
