By: John Paul Guidry DPT CSCS

Low back pain is one of the most common orthopedic problems treated today. It is the leading cause of disability in Americans under the age of 45. Although steadily increasing, treatments like surgeries, injections, and pain meds, while helpful for some, are not successful in treating low back pain overall. There is strong evidence supporting manual and movement based therapies for painful musculoskeletal problems; therefore, physical therapy can be a viable option for treating low back pain without the negative effects of the treatments listed above. In this article, I would like to dispel some of the myths associated with low back pain and hopefully give and low back pain. Core strengthening exercise programs have been the readers a better idea of what to do if they experience it. The first shown to be no better than general exercise or even walking in myth: Damage and/or degeneration is correlated with pain. While treating low back pain. The spine is a strong, resilient structure and in damage and degeneration such as disc injuries, sprains or strains, arthritis, stenosis etc. are one factor in why someone may have pain, they most cases people with pain have more issues relaxing the muscles in do not have a direct correlation with pain. Pain is a multi-factorial issue their back rather than needing to increase the strength in them. Thinking that you have a weak back can cause more fear and in which damage or injury is only one factor; social relationships, environment, genetics, stress and anxiety are just a few of the many factors pain and lead to a decrease in function. Your back is not weak or out of place. While core exercises can be a beneficial part of a low back that effect whether someone may experience low back pain or pain in general. Pain is about sensitivity of the nerves not about damage to the pain rehabilitation program, the best course of treatment is proper education, a graded return to full movement and activity, manual thertissues. It is an output of the brain in response to a threat of which can be any number of things with tissue damage being only one. Therefore, apies, general exercise and movement, as well as keeping yourself in no matter what your MRI or X-Ray may show, if severe injury or disease good general physical and mental health. Physical therapy can be a great choice for most people with low back pain without the risks assois ruled out, the rest of the results do not correlate well pain. The second myth: People with low back pain should always avoid certain move- ciated with surgery, pain meds or injections. This information is not a substitute for a proper medical examination and treatment, so if you ments or activities. While acutely some movements or activities should are experiencing low back pain or pain in general please see a Medical be avoided, the goal is to restore all motions of the spine and return to Doctor or Physical Therapist for a proper evaluation of your complaints full activities as soon as possible. A common belief is that people with before starting any type of treatment or exercise program. low back pain should never bend forward or lift, but the reality is that people with low back pain or injury with a properly guided, graded activity and exercise program should be able to return to those activities with minimal to no issues. The third and last myth: Low back pain is related to either your spine/pelvis being out of place or due to a weak back or core. Firstly, there is no evidence supporting that the joints of our spine or pelvis can go out of place. Therefore, when you get manipuwww.guidrypt.com lated by a chiropractor or physical therapist and John Paul Guidry DPT, CSCS JohnPaul@guidrypt.com feel better, it is not because a joint was put back 61700 Hwy 434 Unit D Phone (985) 882-8427 in place, but rather most likely due to a change in Lacombe, La 70445 Fax (985) 882-8429 the threat to the nervous system as well as possible placebo effects. There is also a very poor correlation between core strength or weakness

Breakdown Of All 12 Schools Recruiting Classes By: Coach Andy Bryson

In this months issue, we breakdown each schools recruiting class. I am going to use the same formula that I use when I used to scout at the colligate level. So what I do is a assign a player a 1-10 for five categories; speed, strength, hands, size, and technique. Next I tally the combined score then divide by five and get the final score for each recruit. Five star recruits are anyone that scores a 8.5-10.0, four star is 6.5-8.4, three star 4.5-6.4, two star 3.0-4.4, and a one star 1.0-2.9. Now why would I do this. After all you can go to a number of websites and get this info. Well here is the truth about these so call recruiting websites. Those sites are ran by sport journalists with little to no background as a player or coach. So how do they get their rating system then? What they do is go off of who is recruiting the guys. So if a bunch of big power five conference teams are recruiting a guy, then he is a five star guy, if only one or two big schools

and a bunch of tier two power five schools are recruiting him then he is a four star guy. So you can see how the system is somewhat flawed. This why a lot of five star guys fall off the radar and get hidden at times. One of the best evaluators of talent (besides myself) is Frank Wilson. Coach Wilson is the head coach for UTSA, but when I knew him he was the recruiting coordinator and running back coach for LSU. There is a reason why LSU leads the nation with the most guys in the NFL, and a lot of that is due to him. Coach Orgeron has been a good evaluator of talent in the past, remember that Arden Key was his guy last year when he was the D-Line coach and look how he has paned out so far. It should be exciting now that he is head coach and he has the final say on who the Tigers sign. I loved the recruiting process when I was at the colligate level. There is so much that goes into recruiting that I could fill manuals with what I know. We hope you enjoy this evaluation of each recruiting class.

Mannie Netherly is a converted quarterback which gives him good vision. Additionally Netherly has SEC level speed which will make him a valued addition to the LSU lineup. All I need to say about Tyler Taylor is speed, power, and bone breaking. I am really excited to get this aggressive player for LSU. I predict that LSU fans will really enjoy watching Taylor. Clyde Edwards-Helaire has impressive field awareness and he makes defenders miss consistently. He doesn’t have elite speed, but Clyde does have the ability to move explosively up close. In his high school days Patrick played both sides of the ball. As a running back in the SEC he will need to bulk up. Queen has good hand usage to catch the ball and he can break tackles. Racey uses his hands well to catch the ball. What’s more, he has excellent breakaway speed. In looking at McMath’s hudl film I notice that he makes defenders miss consistently. As a former quarterback, Jontre Kirklin knows the reads and has excellent situational awareness. Jontre is a 4.4 guy, and has the potential to become a great cover corner. Saahdiq has excellent size to play the interior of the offensive line. Once he bulks up and adds muscle to his huge frame, he will be a huge upgrade on the line. Aaron, being the son of the Strength and Conditioning coach at LSU, already knows what is expected of him when he shows up. He has excellent size and speed. He will get stronger and faster and will provide great competition at the END/Outside Linebacker position.

SP SZ HD ST TQ Tot Neil is an aggressive interior lineman. His take off 6'3'', 295 7 8 7 8 9 7.8 could make him a dangerous lineman in the 30 set. In Hometown: Mobile, AL a 40 defense, he will play a 3 tech. School: Murphy High School Position: Defensive Tackle www.LouisianaGridironFootball.com 9

Justin does have a thick base, but he will need to bulk up his upper body. He has an explosive first step. However he will need to be coached to have better use of his a better use of his hands and control the line of scrimmage. Tory has a thick frame with an explosive first step. With his strength he blows defenders back. With Carter LSU gains a punishing power back.

Seth looks to be a highly underrated prospect. He is super aggressive and is a mauler along the line. His quickness gets him to the second level. He can play both inside and at tackle. His size is quite impressive as well.

Cole will most likely wind up playing running back or wide receiver . His speed will create a favorable miss-match against defenders.

Robertson has good field vision and plays on the ball. He is fast and can contribute in the kicking game as well.

Walker has a strong arm, but he tends to put a little too much air under the ball. He has good release so with a little coaching he will improve.

Joshua Mote has a big body. He needs work with his footwork and hand placement, but with coaching he has a lot of room to grow.

Cualan is a large receiver who was a very big fish in a small pond previously. He will need to tune up his technique to compete at the collegiate level.

Andrews has good speed which allows him to recover. He will need to improve his technique, but nothing the coaching staff at Tech can’t handle.

Farlow has a good strong leg and will greatly increase the depth for La Tech special teams.

Kollin has great instincts and can make good plays on the ball. Hurt lives up to his last name and can really make a hit too.

Conner Estes fills some major space and gets to the second level very quick. Its difficult to find a big guy who is quick, but it looks like Tech has found one.

Lyndon is a big receiver who has a huge upside. His mixture of size, speed, and use of hands makes him a dangerous tool at wide receiver. Morris is a 6-6, 315 lbs. FBS transfer from the University of Mississippi. The Memphis, Tenn. native was a 4 star prospect, Army All-American Selections, and was listed as #10 Best Offensive Tackle in the nation when he left Memphis East HS. Trevor has good snapping technique. He will add depth to the roster and fill a need at Grambling.

Kenan has great speed and range. He has good ball skills and can become an elite corner with the right coaching.

Edgard is a hard nose lineman that plays at another level. With his frame and size he should be playing on the edge, but I think he could be a better interior lineman.

Wesley is a gap crusher. Ne is a natural 3-tech defensive lineman.

Dorrell has the ability to separate himself in the passing game. He will need to bulk up to help in the run game.

Cameron has the size and frame to put on a lot of muscle while at Grambling. His speed off the line will make him a dangerous asset on the gridiron.

Malik may be small but he is fast. When he gets the ball in his hands, he does some magical things with it.

Chris is a big and physical lineman. Tends to play on his heels at times. Will need to clean up his footwork and hand placement.

Mac has the skills to be an immediate impact for the cowboys this season.

Nate may be small, but his speed and ball skills is unmatched. Nate can really stretch the field.

Quincy is a quick receiver who has the potential to be a game changer.

Tyrique will be an immediate impact for the Cowboys. He is fast off the edge and has the arm length to separate himself from the O-Line. He is also a punishing tackler. Donovan fine tuned some of his skills in Juco. His size makes him a prime candidate to play at the guard position. He will need to work on his pass blocking skills. Kordell is a solid defensive back. He has good speed and decent ball skills.

Cody has a burst of speed off the edge. His size will most likely move him to the outside linebacker spot.

Hanif has decent speed and has developed good ball skills.

Harris is a force in the middle of the line. He is a natural 3-tech.

Jacob can stretch the field with his versatility as a Tight End. He can block like a lineman and catch the ball down the field. He needs to bulk up a bit for college. Camron is a huge defensive tackle that has a great first step. He needs to add some weight . He also needs to use his hands better to get off blocks.

Cory is a dual threat athlete. He can play backer an wide out. He is fast and can catch the ball well. He can make a good slot.

Colby’s largest asset is his speed. He needs to work on his ball skills this offseason before he reports to camp. His speed can make him a weapon on special teams.

Interview With Louisiana College QB, Easton Melancon

By: Andy Bryson

When I first started Louisiana Gridiron Football,

You had an impressive career at LC, who do you attribute that to?

Coach Dennis Dunn from Louisiana College was my first interview. I could have interviewed Les Miles, or Ron Roberts since I had been a part of both staffs in one way or another. But I started with Louisiana College because I wanted to show how much talent there was in this state. Louisiana College was and is the only DIII school in Louisiana, and they had some rare Louisiana talents.

First of all, God gave me all my abilities and talents, and he gets all the credit. I know that I could never have done all the things that I have without God. Secondly, the coaches were encouraging to me and always helped with whatever I needed. And of course, my parents were very supportive and gave me the means to play at Louisiana College and to get my degree. Having my family at games cheering me on meant the world to me.

One such guy that caught my eye at Louisiana College was Easton Melancon. Even at 5’11” he is one talented quarterback. He has a strong arm, and great ball skills. He is a field general out there. I watched him on several occasions put the team on his back and fight for the win. I had the pleasure of interviewing him this month and the following is a little about the guy who is only the third person to throw for 3,000 yards in a season and the third guy in the state to throw for 10,000 yards in a career. How and when did you get into playing football? I was about 6 years old. My dad wad was always there for me, and he got me into playing sports. He is the one I really credit with starting me playing recreational ball. I was the youngest kid on the team but I was one of the best players on the team. When I got to high school, I played multiple sports so I like a little bit of everything. But, football is my main passion. How was your recruiting experience? How many schools were recruiting you? I had a couple of schools that wanted me to be a walk on or gray shirt, but when coach Brian Wallace came to my school he made it known that Louisiana College wanted me. My first impression of the school was that I really liked how all the coaches knew the players. Some schools aren’t like that, so it truly makes a difference that at Louisiana College they do. I wanted to stay in state so my parents could come and see me play. Family is important to me, and the coaches tried hard to make game day at Louisiana College a family environment.

Did you like playing at LC? If so, what would be some advice you would give to future recruits? I definitely enjoyed playing here. Not only did I enjoy it, I love it up here in Pineville. At first it was a culture shock for a city kid from New Orleans to come to a country town. But once I was here, I found the people in this area are so nice and welcoming. I will say that even though this school is smaller than some, recruits coming to Louisiana College should not think that anything is going to be given to them. If you want something you have to earn it. It is hard for a lot of recruits because some think that playing time is a given, but it has be earned by putting in the work in the weight room and on the field. I think that is part of what makes Louisiana College’s football program so strong. LC is known for its academics as well as being a religious university. How would you say that affected your college experience? It wasn’t all that different from how I was raised since I have been young I have been a strong catholic in faith. Even though Louisiana College is a Baptist school and we had chapel every week, I think any Christian would find Louisiana College an enriching place to go to school. In my opinion there is not much difference between the different denominations of Christianity because they all love God and that is the focus. What was your favorite football moment while at LC? That is a tough one. I would probably have to say my favorite football moment at Louisiana College was my second game my freshman year, against Weber University. Now, I wasn’t the starter yet, but Coach Dunn put me in at halftime since we were behind and struggling. I helped lead the team to a victory with a score of 18-12. After that, I have started every game since. There is something very www.LouisianaGridironFootball.com

rewarding about knowing you earned your starting spot and kept it for that long.

What is next now that you are graduating?

God has a plan for me, if he wants me to continue playing ball then I would love the opportunity. If anyone took a chance on me, I wouldn’t let them down. I just love playing ball. I hope to be able to continue I was the third person ever to pass over 3000 yards in one year playing for as long as I can. I did get a degree in education, so I hope to in the state of Louisiana. Danquan is a special kid. He has a good takeoff out of his stance and has some speed. Hunter can pay either inside or our on the d-line. He needs to add some bulk for the inside at the DI level. Drew is well coached. I feel that he needs to bulk up to be able to play the interior of the line in the Southland Conference. Lorenz is a man amongst boys on the gridiron. He has great size and strength. He also has good hand placement while keeping the defenders at bay.

He will most likely play wide receiver at Tulane. Singletary is a stout defensive end who has good natural ability. He will likely need some coaching to improve his technique at the next level.

Moody is another linebacker selected this season for Tulane. He has decent size and speed. He will be another strong contender for reps this season. LeDee is tall and has an uncanny knack for coming down with the ball. He will need some coaching at the next level, but should be fun to watch. Tucker is a large tight end. He has decent speed and will add needed depth to the Green Wave.

Brown is a little small for a safety, but he plays strong and has a lot of heart. He will make a good addition to the team this season. Cameron is a big strong Tackle. I am surprised that he was overlooked by bigger schools. He is everything you want in a tackle. Big, strong, and aggressive. Willie is a good receiver who stretches the field with his speed. He has decent hands and a great jump.

Chase is a prototypical big, strong safety who can either cover a receiver or play deep third.

Jaylon is a fast corner with good ball skills. He may have some difficulties with bigger receivers.

Jaetavian has good field vison and good hands. He can stretch the field with his speed.

Tirise has good speed and field vision. He is a hard hitting safety that is good in the run defense.

Cameron is a hard hitting end with relentless speed off the edge.

Patrick is a long end with long arms. His size and speed off the edge is a huge asset for the Wave. He needs to work on his starts and stances to get a better takeoff.

Schdarren is a speedster who can play multiple positions. He has good hands and can catch the ball well in space.

Andre is a little light at the end position. However he has a fast first step and can run around the line and still make sacks.

Staten has a huge frame and lots of room to grow. He plows through defenders in the run game. He needs to learn to set his feet in the passing game. Julius is a little light at the linebacker position. Most likely he will be red shirted his freshman year to add some bulk. Karson hits the gaps fast and hard. He is raw and last a lot to learn. He has the size and frame to be a contributor on defense.

Earnest is a speedy receiver who will help out special teams. He is undersized but he still makes plays.

Bennie has decent size and strength. He can play well against the run. He will need to work on his pass rush.

5

Ryheem is a special player. As a slot receiver, he is a mismatch for most nickel corners. He needs to work on watching the ball all the way in.

C.J. flies down the field. He has the ability to score every time he touches the ball. He needs to work on his ability to get off the defender. J.J. was highly recruited coming out of juco. He is a quick corner that has good ball skills.

After watching Javins film, I really liked what I saw. Javin is very fast, has great breaks, good vision, and can catch the ball out of the backfield. His size is his only obstacle. Zachari is a speedster and has great hands. He does magical things when the ball is thrown in his direction.

Dakota has a wide frame with decent technique. He needs to work on his footwork and better hand placement.

Don’t let Perry’s size fool you. He has elite speed and has great vision and ball skills.

RaShaad is a little undersized at middle linebacker spot. He needs to add about 20 pounds. Don’t let that confuse you though, because he can knock the stuffing out of the ball carriers. Demonde has a great first step. He can play either the 0 or the 3-tech on the line. He has decent handwork and can power through the line.
