Interview I am currently working on two projects for different channels; one revolves around women and their counseling, while the other is about men and their problems their insecurities, fears, complexes, etc. As not much attention is given to men and their issues, I decided to unveil their problems through the show “Meet the Man”

U

rooj Nasir made her foray in the fickle world of showbiz more than a decade ago. A young colt at the time, the girl was all set to rule the roost with her talent and good looks. And sure enough she was all over the

pact on her viewers. However, it came as a shock when the established actor, one fine day, decided to quit acting for good. At the pinnacle of her career, not many would have the guts to take such a decisive step. Being a determined girl she stuck to her decision and to date has not wavered from it. She can now be seen in the garbs of an anchor person, on various TV channels. Here are excerpts from her interview for Lounge. Q. How has the experience of marriage been so far? A. Absolutely fantastic and fabulous.

32 I January 30 - February 05, 2011

I’m very happy and content with my life. I’m lucky to have found a man like Asif. Marriage is actually a gamble however, there are a few basic ingredients needed for a marriage to be a success - honesty, loyalty, sincerity, fidelity and respect for each other. If you’ve got that worked out then there’s no reason your marriage will not flourish and prosper. Allah has been really kind to us. He has given us a chance to make our lives beautiful and we will keep working on our relationship. Q. What keeps you busy nowadays? A. Lately, I have been working on myself to become a better person. I spent the last two Eids with mine and my husband’s fam

ily. At the moment I’m enjoying my marital life with my adorable and supportive husband who encourages me to follow my career. Q. Why did you disappear from showbiz when you were at the peak of your career? A. I never disappeared from showbiz. However, I decided to be more selective and choosy about my work. You will not believe the number of offers that started pouring in once I had announced my decision to quit acting. I got all sorts of international offers as well as for local ventures. However, I did not want to continue as I was not comfortable with the way things were progressing in show business. Q. What was it that made you decide to give up acting? A. One of my teachers taught me to do things for the right reason. I had many right reasons for quitting acting. Too many to divulge, but one thing I would like to clarify is that I did not leave it to please a particular individual; I left it for my own principles. Q. When did the transition from an actor to host actually take place? A. I started my career as a voiceover talent. My onscreen debut was as an anchor on NTM (private channel). Later I got my break as an actor through Family Front. Samina Ahmad made me a part of that family and I’m thankful to her for that. Q. Any regrets about giving up acting? A. No regrets whatsoever! Actually I’m very happy that I took that decision at that particular point in time. I have come to realize that when you take a decision for the right reasons you never regret it. Q. Any plans of taking to the acting platform again or will you continue being a host? A. I strongly believe in ‘man proposes, God disposes’… So no point in making plans. I now take each day as it comes as what’s meant to be will be. As far as acting goes, I don’t see myself doing that anymore. Let’s see what God has in store for me. Q. What about modeling? A. I’m not interested in fashion or ramp modeling. As far as TV commercials are concerned I will definitely take on any good project that comes

my way. Q. Please tell us about some of the projects you are working on currently. A. I am currently working on two projects for different channels; one revolves around women and their counseling, while the other is about men and their problems - their insecurities, fears, complexes, etc. As not much attention is given to men and their issues, I decided to unveil their problems through the show “Meet The Man”. Q. How do you manage to strike a balance between personal and professional life? A. One of my friends once told me to always remember to, “Give everything its due share even if they are the plants in your house.” And that thought has stayed with me ever since. I give my husband time; I respect his work, understand his work commitments and give him top-most priority in all matters. In return he reciprocates. My work comes after my family that is also the reason why I don’t want to take on too many projects. Q. Who’s your style inspiration? A. Actually no one! I don’t follow anyone, I have my own style. If you ask me, style is not about wearing modern or revealing clothes. In my opinion anything that you carry with style is stylish. When it comes to dressing, I’m very particular and conservative in my choice of attire. Q. And how do you keep fit? A. I do yoga and a bit of dieting. Both help me maintain my shape. Q. What are your future plans? A. Like I said, only Allah knows what’s in store for me so I don’t believe in making grand plans. But I do plan to have babies and do a bit of meaningful work to bring about some difference in people’s lives. Q. If not an actor/host what else would it have been for you? A. I would have been involved in some charity work where I could help mankind in any capacity. Q. Words of wisdom for our readers: A. If you can’t make someone’s life easy please don’t create problems for them either. And if you want to lead a peaceful, happy and successful life do good deeds and Allah will reward you.

You will not believe the number of offers that started pouring in once I had announced my decision to quit acting. I got all sorts of international offers as well as for local ventures. However, I did not want to continue as I was not comfortable with the way things were progressing in show business

your

style! By Urooj Zia

A

dding a dose of feminity to your daily ensemble shouldn’t be a difficult task. Nor does it have to break your wallet. Until Pakistan becomes a land where people learn to not impose their notions of morality on to others, you don’t have to dress like a 90-year-old. Follow the basic principle that the ‘tu khud ko budel’ anthem teaches, and jazz up your outfits the way you want. Say hello to the wonders of leggings, elbow jackets and thick bangles! They come in all sizes and colours (and in the case of bangles, even shapes!), they’re cheap, and they can be paired with any outfit at all, to desify it enough to wear to work, or out on the street. Love that awesome little skirt? Grab it! Add a pair dark leggings, and voila! You have a perfectly ‘non-offensive’ ensemble. See what we mean? Few things – very, very few! – spell feminity the way elbow jackets do. In colder cities, add a set of wrist-length gloves, and a bunch of thick, metal bangles for a look that is guaranteed to be a head turner for all the right reasons. Colours this season are all over the place. Get a brilliant, fiery orange hat with your old black shirt, or a petrol blue scarf for a dark brown dress to add ‘pop’ to an otherwise mono-toned outfit. Pair off-the-shoulder gowns with shrugs in bright, happy colours. This season, ring in the biker chic! Lay off the excessive piercings, though – those just look trashy. For ideas, feel free to drool, like we did, over the Burberry Prorsum Aviator Jacket line. Why do those things cost so much? Why don’t we earn more? Why isn’t the earth round? Oh wait… Anyway, while heavy-set people have a ball in the winter (we all go around bundled up like little packages, don’t we), skinny folk need not worry. Skinny folk should think bullet pleats! They’ll give your tops the oomph you need and your skirts will get cute wavy hems. Also, embellish dresses with fur (faux, please, we like our animals!) and embroidery. Or get kneelength knits, paired with skinny belts and leggings to ward off glares from the more-pious-than-thou. The basic principle in all this is to look around at what’s deemed ‘okay’ (read: gets you the least amount of trouble on the streets). Of course, nothing that you wear – not even an abaya – will completely stop harassment, but for some twisted reason, anything other than the basic ‘acceptables’ seems to add to women’s woes thanks to the moral brigade (and we’re using the term ‘moral’ in a very sarcastic manner here, just so you know). It is ‘okay’ to wear qameez-shalwar. Well then, it should be ‘okay’ to wear dresses with leggings too, right? Dupattas are considered ‘okay’ but if we don’t want them replace them with funky scarves to keep your necks warm (your local Itwar Bazaar should be the place to go for these). Chuck headscarves and get hats. If you’re in Karachi, pushcart vendors at Tariq Road have an amazing collection of headgear – in all kinds and colours – for under Rs 200 each. For vintage dresses in excellent condition, check out local shops (or pushcart vendors) selling second hand clothes. We’ve found absolute treasures, for under Rs 300 each! Above all, be yourself, stand up for what you feel is right, and have fun.

‘Mystery’ of the zodiac The Controversy

by Fatima Zahra Naqvi

The cosmic news broke without warning? Or did the solar eclipse and floods and blizzards herald the rediscovery of the new sign of the zodiac: Ophiuchus, the snake-holder? His usurpation of the 19 days between Scorpio and Sagittarius has altered everyone’s horoscope — and perhaps altered our personalities too. Think you’re a Pisces? Think again, because the star sign you thought was yours may be incorrect. That’s according to an astronomer who has discovered there are 13, not 12, zodiac signs. The internet exploded this month when Parke Kunkle discussed the newest sign, Ophiuchus, in an interview with American broadcaster NBC, propelling the topic to “trending” status on twitter for several days. Kunkle, a professor in the Minnesota Community and Technical College, talked about how a wobble in the Earth’s axis had caused a change in star constellations. As a result, there is a new sign, Ophiuchus, that wasn’t present 3,000 years ago when Babylonians introduced zodiac. Kunkle said in an interview that the Earth’s position has changed vis-avis the Sun in the last 3,000 years when astrological signs were first allocated and there is a new sign called Ophiuchus which dictates the course of many events.

Ophiuchus Personality Traits • A seeker of wisdom and knowledge • Flamboyant dressing sense, favouring bright colours • Authority looks upon him/her well • Would make a great architect or builder • Number 12 is the lucky number • Will have a big family but will leave home at an early age 40 I January 30 - February 05, 2011

Ophiuchus: an old hoax? While the sign many people were born under may change, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to remove that scorpion tattoo just yet: some astrologers, particularly in the western world, use a system that is Earth, not star, based. Kunkle’s debunking of astrology and the viral wave of theories and anti-theories about the 13th zodiac sign confounded the followers of astrology the world over, but also dealt a lethal blow to astrologers who withdrew to their shell groping for answers. But now astrologers are striking back. “The zodiac isn’t wrong. Your sign isn’t changing. Ignore the misinformation,” thundered astrologer Rob Brezny. “Every year or so, another astronomer erupts into the mainstream media with a portentous announcement about how, due to the precession of the equinoxes, the astrological signs are no longer aligned with the actual constellations,” he wrote on his website. Eric Francis, a New York-based astrologer and scholar, says the latest debate is another smear on the science of astrology. He says Kunkle’s revelations have no significance for the work of that for western astrologers, who use the tropical zodiac unlike the Vedic astrologers who use the sidereal zodiac.

Two corner tables with decoration pieces and vases on them further enhance the presentation of the lobby, with a floor lamp to add to the overall ambiance. Not only that, but also the floor is covered with beautiful tiles of earthy tones and a false ceiling, with painted art work forces one to analyse every detail of the lobby. Three glass doors in the lobby each open to the drawing room, the dining room and the main hall/TV lounge respectively. TIPS • Maintain a consistent colour scheme throughout the house except bedrooms • Do not overdo bedrooms, as they are private spaces for relaxation • Do not leave walls or corners bare, or else they seem neglected • Vanity depressions or niches in walls add variation to the monotony of walls, taking away the need for mounting up shelves everywhere, acting as perfect places to showcase decoration pieces January 30 - February 05, 2011 I 44

There is an Egyptian crystal horse on a side table and also two Egyptian steel bulls in golden. There are also replicas of Egyptian miniature paintings framed and hung on the walls. This Egyptian theme with the earth tones used in various furniture items in the drawing room along with the grey-brown Roman blinds finishes off the look. The dining room consists of a 12-chaired wooden dining table, with large chairs with white covers, giving it the perfect royal touch. The TV lounge and the kitchen on the first floor of the house are asymmetrically designed to the ones below them on the ground floor. However, there are three bedrooms, two of which are guest beds. The bedrooms are comparatively simpler than the rest of the house. But as should be,

archway is a four chaired dining table, perfectly suited to the three-member family owning this beautiful house. The kitchen is a rather small place with a wooden floor, and chocolate brown wood is used for all cabinets. The shelves are lined with green Indian marble. The kitchen is a rather simple affair with the minimum of decorations, with only artificial fruit-hangings and flower-hangings above the cabinet. This keeps in line with simplicity, without compromising on the beauty of the area. The TV lounge has comfortable sofas and a settee in light brown tones beautifully complimenting and in synch with the over all colour scheme of the house. There is a 42 inches flat screen LCD TV mounted on the wall, with a small glass table beneath it, on top of which lies a fish bowl, with two gold fishes, completing the entire look of the room. There are paintings and other art pieces hanging on different walls, showing that every little nook and cranny of the house has been well-tended to. One of the walls of the TV lounge has a large hearth with glass walls on either side, which look into the drawing room. The drawing room is by far the most lavish and tastefully decorated part of the house. This room is a classic fusion between traditional interior decoration and modern interiors. The fireplace between the glass wall partitioning the drawing room from the TV lounge adds another level of sophistication. Two low wooden chairs with beautifully carved peacocks on the rest, with maroon covers are placed in the corners besides the fireplace. Plush sofas in beige and dark brown are placed around a low coffee table. The coffee table is decorated with small decoration pieces of crystal, all collected from various parts of the world. The consistent use of ashwood for all floors, doors and windows maintains the cosy ambiance, going in line with the earth colours used throughout the house they are very lavish, yet not overdone. Wooden floors, platform beds, Chinese paper lamps on low side-tables are the major highlights of all the bedrooms. There are fireplaces in the two main bedrooms, completing the cosy atmosphere of the bedrooms, making it ideal private spaces to relax in after a tiring day. The basement of the house is an area dedicated to extravagant indulgences of the owner, consisting of a billiards room and a home theatre. The home theatre boasts of a 60 inches flat TV with a surround sound system. There are huge comfortable sofas and a large hearth adding to the warmth of the room. The colour schemes of the entire house has consistency with earthy tones of brown, black, gray and caramel with different variations being used throughout. Details have been carefully looked into as there are no bare walls, no bare corners and empty tables. Paintings from Rehman Chugtai to Archie Boyd and wall hangings decorate all walls. Hanging lamps and floor lamps have been used abundantly, adding a certain glow and cosiness to the ambiance. All tables throughout the house has porcelain or metal vases and decoration pieces on top of them. Another major feature throughout the house remains vanity depressions or niches, whish have been utilised to display small statues or antique pieces collected from various parts of the country and abroad. The consistent use of ashwood for all floors, doors and windows maintains the cosy ambiance, going in line with the earth colours used throughout the house.

The ambition card Dec 22 - Jan 21

The physical change card Apr21 - May21

Your wildest dreams will need to be put on the backburner as you take care of more practical things. Once you get that boring stuff off the road, you’ll be in the mood to tackle some of the more interesting tasks. Networking could help you get closer to those ideals that you hold high; take a short trip and calculate your costs -- it’s time to save for something big. There’s some danger that you could be misunderstood. Some of your actions could end up being misinterpreted by others.

You may need to take a positive, stepby-step approach this week and weigh your ideals against your ideas. Truly you may find that your friends are very confusing. Birth time: unknown Sun Sign: Libra Moon Sign: Scorpio Jada Pinkett Smith September 18, 1971 Baltimore, Maryland Birth time: unknown Sun Sign: Virgo Moon Sign: Virgo People born under Libra (Will’s star) are rarely lazy. They work hard and also demand that their partners work just as hard. They have a strong sense of justice and fair play. It is pretty unusual for them to express anger, but when they do it is usually a storm. Jada’s a Virgo. In love, Virgo lives according to her/his rules while Libra is very different. There are other discrepancies too: Virgo is more interested in money than sex; Libra finds it inexcusable. Stay-at-home Virgo resents Libra’s social butterfly instincts and pursuit of pleasure. Libra’s tastes are expensive; Virgo is careful. This is a doubtful connection and a complicated marriage.
