01 Generative Design 08 From the found Object to the Syntetic Instructor: Damjan Jovanic Location: Atlanta Partner: Phil Hood Subject: Design Studio, MArch II
This exercise is an exploration done with two different design techniques. Generative procedural object placement along complex surfaces and generative procedural object positioning within a space. What this entails is not a simple object placement, but a genuine growth in the objects that are placed while respecting given rules, its not about panelling or filling space, its about dominating the essential value we give to three dimensional objects and allow our selves to give freedom to the tools we no longer fully control but instead merely give directions to. The workflow revolves around the idea of looping input, processing, and then filtering the outputs that result from the original inputs. The experiment utilizes the 15 Elements of Architecture by Rem Koolhaas as the placed object and utilizes found rocks digitally processed through photogrammetry as the base object, all this to create a sophisticated contrast between the entirely architectural elements that are injected full of context and meaning in our history, such an example would be stairs, the idea revolves around using these contextual objects and decontextualising them to create something completely different that may or may not have architectural qualities.

T
he object placement within a space happens in an interesting way, it matters not if the objects intersect each other due to the fact the process makes it so, but, it will still react to other objects placement, this gives this object a dense look while creating different tunnels of empty space that create this alien version of space that is completely constructed of the basic elements of architecture while not having any relation to the objects original uses and reasons to exist. This process creates a behemoth that contains architecture but in a traditional sense couldn’t be farther away from architecture.

he surface treatment not only follows the surface but it follows a direction extracted from the base shape itself, the different objects are positioned with knowledge of its surroundings, this leads to certain stripes of objects placed adjacent to each other to create continuity lines across the base surface. It matters not if the objects intersect themselves for this is not a panelling utility, but instead is a continuously grown surface scattering technique that can be stopped and altered at any moment to create an endless amount of different results.

02 Cabinet of Curiosities Object making through Photogrammetry Instructor: Florencia Pita Location: DTLA, Los Angeles/Bonnaventure Hotel Partner: Sri Sinha Subject: Design Studio, MArch II
The idea of capturing reality through something as mundane as a smartphone and through extensive computer processing, extract an actual three-dimensional shape is a very powerful thing. The time where digital and physical stood apart is over we can now with ease capture portions of our reality and bring it to the limitless world that the digital tools we utilize give us, the idea that design is a one way street where we produce representations digitally which are later constructed through rough methods is over, we can now inject reality and extract what we want when we need. This exercise does not answer what can we take from this but is a proof of concept that shows, the physical is now the new digital.

03 Urban Fragmento Residential Exercise Instructor: João Silva Leite, João Rafael Santos Location: Lisbon, Portugal Subject: Design Studio, Bsc
This project looks at residential housing not as another stack of apartments but as an object that can revitalise an area that is in need of it. Due to the new investment in the area, the proposed building is dynamic and full of energy to rebrand this old Lisbon area as something that’s in transformation. The project itself maintains several classic housing ideas in frame, like cross ventilation, separation of social and private areas, but literally twists those notions to arrive to an object that represents the new generation of people that don’t want an apartment but want to be part of the city.

The object itself comes from the idea of extruding the site entirely, and through several measured cuts give as much space as possible on the ground levels as public. This allows for the several programs leasing and commercial spaces requested, instead of doing regular cuts the faceted typology that influenced the cuts to create sharp and dynamic edges that embed themselves in the symbolic meaning of the building.

his section shows the overall organisation of the building where the principal axis holds the vertical and horizontal circulation, and the exterior sides hold the housing units. The circulation is perforated with different cuts that create an indoor space that is open to airflow, allowing a successful cross ventilation strategy for every housing unit. There is a communal outdoor space on the last floor with a spectacular view of the sea, while in on the bottom floors there is parking with commercial spaces on top of it.

aรงade wise the panelling solution is porous and allows air to flow through it, this solution adds an extra layer of shading to the entire building which in sunny Lisbon, heat is always an issue. This solution also allows with time for plants to grow and connect, creating a multilayered exterior look. The panelling positioning comes from the original faceted cuts performed on the massing and creates a dynamic movement as if the building is always moving forward adding one more layer of symbolic meaning to the original concept. 04 Augmented Object 04 From the Natural to the Augmented Instructors: Casey Rehm & Andrea Cadioli Partner: Sri Sinha Subject: Visual Studies, MArch II
The Augmented object grabs the previous technique of photogrammetry and takes in one step further. We started by capturing three yellow flowers but instead of trying to extract the full flower in all of its detail we allowed ourselves to fail on purpose. Through different filters of resolutions created something that used to be a flower but had been digitally processed to be something else, after several layers of voxelization and nano meshing, we arrive to an object that contextually belongs nowhere. The next step? Augmented reality.

After the production of the object, we inserted the captured flower with its rich textures and applied it to the new digital flower, creating a contrast of new and old through nature and synthetic. The result was an app that opened your smartphone camera and overlayed the flower on top of the printed physical model.

05 Beach House A small home away from home Client: Travassos Family Location: Costa da Caparica, Portugal Work: Freelance Status: Under Construction
This project is a renovation of an old fisherman’s cabin which was the only cases of structures allowed in Portugal to be built directly on the beach. In Portugal buildings cannot be placed within 50 meters of the coastline, that means this house is an incredible opportunity due to its unique position. The only caveat to this freelance project was that the overall shape and size needed to be fully respected, as such the overall shell stayed the same shape but the materials and inside where wholly renovated, the family asked for four beds and a master suite, in a house that had two beds originally. In the end, it was a challenge to insert everything the program requested while having one single bathroom, the solution was a bathroom that allows for each function to be independently utilized. This house is incredibly well positioned with the sea less than 20 meters away from it.

The floor plan shows a simple layout that is conveniently flexible, the living room has the capability to open up and increase itself by two-fold its size. The kitchen is protected from harsh sunlight and the bathroom functions are divided into separate compartments to allow for the maximum amount of 6 people in the house to still be capable of having a functional morning.

lthough the renders are an illustration, the colours showed bring the idea of a bright, colourful home away from home. The objective is to make a friendly home that can feel light even in the scorching heat of a Portuguese beach. The overall structure is wood due to its historic preservation value given by the Historical Committee of the territory, due to that the beach house will be a light wooden framed house with several thick layers of isolation to allow for a cold house in the heat of the beach marked by colourful accents throughout the building.

03 Faรงade Proposal Envelope Transformation Instructors: Randy Jefferson & Maxi Spina Location: Seoul, South Korea Partner: Gregory Kokkottis, Kristoffer Lund, Nero He Subject: Advanced Materials/Tectonics, MArch
The Trutec is an office building in Seoul, designed by Barkow and Leibinger. Our previous analysis of the building was focused on the visual clarity of the facade, but also the tectonic complexity of this curtain wall. The precise geometry of these glass panels allows for the creation of sharp aesthetics, achieved through variation of shape and inclination. This exercise aims to break down this amazingly resolved facade, by introducing a second skin layer, which does not interfere with its geometrical complexity, keeping the profiles as sleek and slender as possible. The additional layer does not affect the existing panels but rather shapes a secondary layer of glazing, able to increase the ability of the curtain wall to control interior temperatures better.

he secondary skin is made of glass panels supported on an aluminium frame. The frame duplicates the geometry of the existing facade and is attached to it. All the joints are placed on the orthogonal mullions and not the inclined CNC-cut frame of the diagonal glass panels, as the structural stability of the latter remains debatable. The outer Low-E glass layer preserves the three-dimensionality of the original design, while the interior layer can now be made of flat laminated glass panels. Both layers have operable parts. The success of this intervention lies in breaking down the original intention of the architect to concentrate all the functions of the curtain wall into one single layer. By separating the layers and assigning different roles to them, we manage to use the interior glass facade purely for air and water sealing, while using the exterior one to control temperature and sunlight. This allows for materials to get finer, and potentially for the original glass to be replaced with an alternative Low-E glass material that would reduce the overall cost of the facade while simultaneously maintaining its reflective aesthetics.

07 Saboia Residences Residential Project Client: EvolutionAvenue Ltd Location: Estoril, Potugal Work: Freelance Status: Waiting for Government Approval
This Freelance project requested a significant alteration and renovation of a house in Estoril, Portugal with a small budget. The solutions found, always kept in mind its financial costs, the transformation was quite significant, the project went from a two-story small house to a five-story, ten apartments building with a garage and garden with a communal swimming pool. The design follows a couple of simple rules that give it stability and ease of construction, the clean and simple lines deliver a quiet residential building that knows what it is. It’s a simple building that is sure of itself.

South facing is where the three bedroom apartments are located with a living room that has access to a large veranda and a view to the sea. The entire social area is surrounded by wood armoires that overlay the walls everywhere. This gives a contrast between the blue ocean view and the wood panelled walls perspective from when the house is entered. Each room is a suite to follow economic trends in the area, and there is also a small laundry room. Regarding the smaller north facing apartments which contain a more humble approach making use of a more traditional floor plan while maintaining as much open space as possible considering the overall size.

The Prototype was an exercise made to push the limits of a small space, and it consisted off making a volume that could be a home for five people with all the usual amenities in a 25 sm2 floor plan.

Lisbon School of Architecture
When designing such a small and condensed object, my first preoccupation was the aspect of having five people in such a space while making sure the volume offered plenty of natural light and a feeling of openness. To solve this problem two key ideas where utilised, the first was the shape and the second the material. The proposed volume has its concept based in the idea of tricking the human eye into thinking the space is more significant than it is, to accomplish that, a geometric form sliced from a cube was designed to provoke angular feelings of depth.
