WORKSHOP
There is a semi-basement in Budapest, at 41 Csalogány Street: the Workshop. Stepping through the creaking barred gate, another world unfolds before us. It is a puppet maker’s mysterious world: saws, pliers, chisels, hammers, tools in abundance. Above the lathe, there is the dove of the Holy Spirit from the Book of Proverbs. Who knows what those colourful compartments might hide next to it? If only these walls could talk! Everything here has a story.
As a child, László Vízvári set up a workshop in the yard of their house in Szeged. Many years later, as a teacher at the Piarist high school in Debrecen, he received a lathe, set up his workshop, and built his first puppet stage. In 1951, he moved to the Piarist high school in Budapest, where he also had the opportunity to create a workshop. Later, he and his ensemble tried to establish themselves in various locations until finally, in 1959, they were allocated the former workshop of puppet artist Béla Szokolay (1891–1959) on Csalogány Street.

From then on, this is the base. It is the place for planning, experimenting, thinking together, rehearsing, and, if necessary, performing. Here, they not only create puppets for the troupe but also for various theatre and television productions. The Workshop is also a place for reflection, creation, and invention. It is an intellectual environment. Old members leave, new ones come, but the Workshop remains a reference point for everyone. It is a refuge. It is home.
