WELCOME TO THE 2022 LOVE SUMMER MAGAZINE The last 2 years have been a struggle for all, not forgetting the shops, bars & restaurants that we love so much. Confident that 2022 will bring with it a sense of normality and the opportunity to get out and enjoy all the things that we have missed, we have tried to capture Cambridge at its best for you in the 2022 Love Summer Magazine. The Big Weekend and Cambridge Mela are back this year in July as is the internationally acclaimed Folk Festival, both of which feature on page 11. Now is a great time to rediscover the treasures that Cambridge has to offer, be it shopping to attractions and experiences – there is so much on offer. Once again, the big screen returns to the market square with a schedule of film nights and key sporting events being shown on Station Road, visit pages 4 & 5 for the full round up. BEAUTIFUL CAMBRIDGE Cambridge is a stunning walkable city, full of green spaces and the gently flowing River Cam which connects its beautiful squares, historic streets and colleges, offering visitors a choice of scenic walks to immerse themselves in the city’s fascinating history and idyllic natural environments.
MEANDER ALONG THE RIVER CAM FROM MAGDA LENE BRIDGE TO STOURBRIDGE COMMON A lovely walk which visitors can enjoy along the riverbank takes approximately 40 minutes to complete and passes through Cambridge’s most beautiful spots. Visitors can stop for an artisan coffee at Foy, an independent riverside café bar, before starting the walk from the iconic Magdalene Bridge. The pathway traces the River Cam through Quayside towards Jesus Green, one of the largest college parks where students and locals enjoy picnics on the riverfront on warmer days. If you are planning on making a day of it, why not load up with a picnic from Bridges or Le Patissier or pop to La Mimosa on the riverbank and grab a delicious, freshly baked pizza to take away. The route then leads onto Midsummer Common where the university boat houses sit on the opposite side of the riverbank, meaning walkers might even catch the rowers practising up and down the river. Approaching Stourbridge Common, walkers should look out for the cows which can sometimes be seen grazing on the meadow, whilst scenes depicted inside the Stourbridge Fair Tunnel portray the large medieval fair that used to take place there. The paved walking path then leads out into the open countryside, so those preferring a shorter loop can head back into the city centre.

TAKE A SLOW STROLL FROM C AMBRIDGE TO THE RIVERSIDE VILLAGE OF GRANTCHESTER This river walk takes visitors from the heart of Cambridge to the nearby village of Grantchester in about 45 minutes. Beforehand, stop for a quick snack at Aromi to fuel up, where this much-loved independent café on the corner of Bene’t Street and Peas Hill serves up authentic food, from delicious sourdough pizza to fantastic focaccia. Alternatively, if the sun is shining, ice cream and sorbet lovers can wander around the corner to Benet’s on Kings Parade and test out the extensive array of flavours made from fresh ingredients. Starting in the city centre at the iconic King’s Parade, the path winds through the famous ‘Backs’ where walkers can enjoy spectacular views across to the University colleges. The walk continues south through Sheep’s Green and Coe Fen Nature Reserve, where visitors will discover delightful pastoral scenes of cows and sheep grazing by the water’s edge. Tracing the River Cam, the route then meanders through the countryside, emerging at the peaceful woodland trails of Paradise Nature Reserve. After which, walkers will eventually end up at Grantchester Meadows, a beautiful stretch of land that inspired the 1969 Pink Floyd song of the same name. The path to this picturesque village is perfect for those accompanied by a furry friend too. For a little break, walkers can head to the dog-friendly Orchard Tea Garden for traditional tea and scones set amongst the fruit trees of an idyllic orchard dating back to 1868.
EXPLORE THE HIDDEN GEMS OF CAMBRIDGE ON A CITY TRAIL Along this trail, visitors can take in many of the famous sights and settings which make this picture-perfect city a walker’s paradise. This wonderful walk begins at the Bridge of Sighs, the grade I listed building, part of the coveted Saint John’s College. On route, visitors can check out the Round Church to explore one of Cambridge’s most treasured historic landmarks, taking the opportunity to discover the story of Cambridge through film and exhibition. This trail also explores famed tourist attractions such as Trinity Lane, beside Trinity College, where the narrow alley features some breath-taking architecture. Walkers can stop for a coffee and Chelsea bun at Fitzbillies, a charming old school bakery before exploring King’s College Chapel, which is home to the world’s largest fan vaulted ceiling and the famous King’s College Choir. Across the road is Great St Mary’s Church, which has been at the heart of the University for over 800 years. Here, visitors can climb the tower to take in the far-reaching views. Close by is the famed Corpus Clock, unveiled in 2008 by world-renowned physicist, Professor Stephen Hawking, which mesmerises visitors and locals alike. The final stop of this walk, the Mathematical Bridge, is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Cambridge, located northwest of Silver Street Bridge, connecting two parts of the iconic Queen’s College over the River Cam. When hunger strikes head to The Mill, a traditional riverside pub and the final stop of this walk, here visitors can take in the serenity of the River Cam, cask ale in hand with some hearty food.

C AMBRIDGE ON A PLATE When it comes to Cambridge food legends, Steak & Honour are up there with the very best of them. Responsible for kickstarting the city’s street food scene in 2012, these burger makers par excellence now have a much-loved city centre restaurant – though you can still catch them flipping patties from their vintage vans too. Another local institution is Fitzbillies, a café and bakery with branches on Bridge Street and Trumpington Street. The colourful cake counter has much to tempt, but the spectacularly syrupy, sugary Chelsea buns are the star of the show – don’t leave Cambridge without trying one!
GO PUNTING FOR THE ESSENTIAL C AMBRIDGE EXPERIENCE Another thing you can’t leave Cambridge without trying is punting – the absolute best way to see the sights. Of course you can book in with a tour or a chauffeured punt but theres nothing quite giving it a try yourself. Scudamore Punt Company offer a self hire options from their Mill Lane and Quayside Punt Stations. If punting is not your thing, you can also hire paddles boards or canoes.

P A R K S A N D O P E N S PA C E S Cambridge is a beautiful city at any time of the year but come the summer months there’s something special about the city and the amount of green space to enjoy. With the natural fen landscape flowing right into the city along the river Cam, at various points you can see cows grazing including along the backs where you will also get to witness the magnificent back drop of Kings college. Within the city boundary you will also find public parks, play equipment, football pitches and tennis courts.
The green space, grassy commons, cool meadows and flower filled gardens shape the city as much as the heritage, history and culture. Along the river you will find both Jesus Green and Midsummer Common, home to several river boats and during the summer months a highway for the punting community. You can stroll along, stopping off at a number of pubs to quench your thirst whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery that Cambridge offers. In the heart of the city you have Parkers Piece, an open space used by locals to lounge around, play football and cricket and soak up the atmosphere that oozes through it. The park is also famous as the place where, in 1848 students agreed a set of simple guidelines for football which were then used to influence the development of the Football Association Rules. So, grab a picnic and venture into one of the many green spaces that Cambridge has to offer.
MUSIC IN THE PARK From June to September there will be music playing in the Parks & Open Spaces across the city on selected dates. Each event is free, so go along, take a picnic, and enjoy the sounds in the cool summer breeze. For more information visit cambridgelivetrust.co.uk

C A M B R I D G E F LY I N G T H E P U R P L E F L A G PURPLE FLAG CELEBRATES CAMBRIDGE FOR BEING A SAFE AND VIBRANT EVENING AND NIGHT-TIME DESTINATION, WITH ITS DIVERSE ARRAY OF DINING, ENTERTAINMENT, AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES . Cambridge first secured Purple Flag status in 2019 and is one of only 70 towns and cities across the UK and Ireland, which have achieved this national performance standard. The Purple Flag accreditation is similar to the Green Flag award for parks and the Blue Flag for beaches. It allows members of the public to quickly identify town and city centres that offer an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out. As the governing body, ATCM (Association of Town & City Management) has set 5 core standards, against which accredited locations are measured.
PURPLE FLAG VALUES SAFETY Residents and visitors should feel able to focus on enjoying their night out, and the Purple Flag partnership delivers initiatives to support a safe night out. Every Friday and Saturday, Street Pastors help vulnerable people in the early hours. Offering support on the streets or taking people back to their NightLite safe space at Downing Place URC, to recuperate or wait for friends. Taxi Marshals work from the St Andrew’s Street taxi rank, every payday weekend, bank holidays and special events.
VIBRANCY Cambridge is undoubtedly one of England’s most beautiful cities, with historic streets buzzing long into the evening. Purple Flag celebrates the pubs, clubs and bars that pull the night shifts while the rest of us live for the weekend! The appeal of Cambridge at night is a melting pot of ingredients: from our green spaces and heritage feel; to the wine bars, live music and comedy nights. Not to mention the great hotels where you can rest your head at the end of the night.
QUALITY Multiple partners are involved in Purple Flag, including Cambridge BID, venue owners, the City and County Councils, Police, CCTV, Security, and CAMBAC (Cambridge Business Against Crime). Working together we have more expertise and a bigger network, and can be strategic about a vision for Cambridge. We also deliver regular training events for venues around issues like customer safety, so that staff feel more confident and venues are up to date with best practice.

Best thing about Cambridge in summer? Lola Lo: The plentiful wide open green spaces and our roof terrace day parties! Ta Bouche: The river, and of course the cows. Your most popular summer drinks? Lola Lo: ‘’The Moai’’ which is our take on a Long Island Iced Tea. A unique Summer drink would have to be the aptly named ‘’Summer of Love’’ with vodka, elderflower cordial, cloudy apple juice, fresh lemon, cucumber, mint and soda, it’s perfect for warm summer evenings! Ta Bouche: Either the Zombie or the Passion Fruit Sling. For a unique summer cocktail, there’s quite a few launching soon on our new menu, one called Pink-182 should be a big hit!
Favourite bar in Cambridge and why? Lola Lo: We have so many, it’s difficult to pick just one! For food and beer lovers, Pint Shop! For decor and theatre lovers, Town and Gown and for cocktails it’s hard to beat La Raza and Ta Bouche on the weekend. La Raza: I always enjoy going to ‘Hidden Rooms’. The drinks are always on point and the staff are friendly and accommodating. It’s the perfect escape out of the busy city centre, a hidden gem.

DANC E THE NIGHT AWAY For the last two summers, nightlife was seriously stifled by the pandemic, and it’s safe to say we are all long overdue some roof terrace and cocktail action! Many venues couldn’t operate under the toughest restrictions, and businesses suffered. Luckily for us, Cambridge has weathered the storm as late-night venues look to summer 2022 with optimism. Revolution – with five bars to choose from and an iconic rooftop terrace, it’s the place to go in Cambridge for bottomless brunch and cocktails whenever it strikes your fancy. Vinyl – have you missed going out dancing? Relive the 80s, 90s and 00s on the light-up disco dancefloor, on Friday and Saturday nights. Lola Lo will be throwing some classic rooftop day parties, with celebrity guest appearances and massive DJ’s yet to be announced. Follow their socials and websites to avoid missing out.
Lola Lo tells us.... It’s incredible to welcome back the public, after what has been an incredibly difficult period for everybody following the pandemic. We’re so excited for what we have in store for our beloved customers, old and new, and to be able to throw some incredible parties once more is the best feeling in the world.
