Fancy new decorative lights will bring an added sparkle to the shopping centre, while you may also notice three igloos arriving in Food Social at The Grafton! A first for The Grafton, shoppers can expect a Nordic experience like no other – one that will be both fun and educational – between Saturday 14 and Monday 23 December, with each bringing its own unique experience. To coincide with this, shoppers that spend £40 or more in centre will have the opportunity to win a once-in-a-life time trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. TOP TIPS FOR

Did you know that us Brits produc
e are some top tips on
during the festive season? Her how to reuse or recycle where
you can.
Wrapping Paper
Jo Clark Snowman Wrapping Cambridge Contemporary Craft, £2
There is a very simple test to check whether or not you can recycle your wrapping paper or not - scrunch it into a ball and wait for a few seconds. If it stays scrunched up, you can recycle as you would any other paper and if it springs back then it can’t be recycled. Obviously you can’t try this out in-store, so we recommend visiting Cambridge Contemporary Crafts as they have a range of wrapping paper by Jo Clark which is recyclable, printed in the UK and sales from the paper goes towards planting trees as part of the Eden Restoration Project.
Buy Local Buying local reduces the carbon footprint of the items that are purchased, and you take then home with you rather than get them sent to you by courier!

Why not stock up on some cute treat boxes from Paperchase or a stylish water bottle from Oliver Bonas. This goes for when you’re out shopping as well as at home, why not carry an organic cotton tote with you, and have your coffee in a travel mug? These items also make great presents to ensure that your friends and family make more sustainable choices in 2020. Another good practice is to try and use all of the food you buy, why not transform your vegetables into new dishes using the Green Roasting Tin Vegan Cookbook available from Heffers.

Did you know that an estimated 6 million Christmas trees are bought in the UK every year? Of course, they are real trees so do biodegrade but a reusable one can be more sustainable if you use it for more than 10 Christmases. Why not try the Debenhams Imperial Pine 6ft for £80? Another popular Christmas tradition which is commonly single-use is an advent calendar, often made out of cardboard and plastic - why not try filling your own calendar with the Flying Tiger Copenhagen reusable calendar - much less waste and means that you can choose to fill it with your loved one’s favourite treats!

Start Off in Style The most quintessentially Cambridge option for breakfast is Fitzbillies. Celebrating their 100th birthday next year, the early menu features Shakshuka, Avocado on Toast and Eggs Royale. Why not treat yourself to one of their world famous Chelsea Buns afterwards?
End the Day on a Sweet Note For a different view of King’s College, try Benets Cafe on King’s Parade for some delicious crêpes and ice creams. For lovers of Afternoon Tea, why not pop over to The Tamburlaine Hotel for a slice of indulgence.
If you’re a coffee connoisseur, Hot Numbers on Trumpington Street is a cosy haven serving tempting breakfasts including French Toast, very instagrammable Smoothie Bowls, Kimchi & Feta Eggs and Pork & Jackfruit Carnitas.

Loving Christmas | Christmas Traditions
Christmas TRADITIONS from around the globe Christmas in Japan Rumiko Pilsworth
Japanese people love to import events and culture from the other parts of the world and adopt them as our own and Christmas is one of them.
CHRISTMAS IN GREECE Panagiota Gatourtzidou The festive period in Greece is one of the most beautiful where locals follow traditions influenced by Christianity, Ancient Greek ancestry and the Greek folklore. For example, on Christmas, New Year’s and Epiphany’s Eve, groups of children accompanied with adults walk around the city holding metallic triangles as a musical instrument, singing festive carols (κάλαντα) in the doors of the houses to celebrate the birth of Jesus, to make wishes to the inhabitants of the house, to herald the Epiphany; eventually they receive treats for their songs. These songs are varied in different places in Greece. As well as the Christmas tree, houses can be decorated with a ship (καράβι) as traditional festive Greek ornament especially of the islandic life, due to the country’s strong connections with the sea, which practice honors St. Nicholas, protector of sailors. To celebrate Christmas and the upcoming year respectively, Greeks traditionally bake a Christmas bread with walnuts and raisins (χριστόψωμο), and a cake in which a hidden coin is placed (βασιλόπιτα).When the clock turns 00.00 on New year’s, a member of the family traditionally cuts the cake into slices, offering one to each person. It is said that whoever finds the coin is the luckiest for the New Year. In some parts of Greece, they make pie (πίτα) instead of the cake.

For many of us, there is no religious association with Christmas, yet it’s a hugely popular event. After Halloween (which of course we celebrate!) everything becomes ‘Christmas’. There are Christmas lights, endless Christmas songs and films and lots of Christmas shopping! It’s impossible to avoid, a bit like here in the UK. Christmas Eve is more for couples to spend some romantic time together, similar to Valentine’s Day. It requires a lot of research and preparation, usually on boys’ side - the pressure is most certainly on! Christmas Day is for friends and family who may choose to have a party, exchange presents and eat KFC. Why KFC I hear you ask, well the story goes that the store manager at the first KFC in Japan dressed up as a Santa Claus as a marketing stunt to boost his sales and so, since then eating fried chicken on Christmas Day has become a bit of a tradition. We have a few days off to spend with friends and family and when it comes to New Year, this is definitely family time with 3 days eating and drinking to see in the New Year. If you visit Japan around this time of the year, be prepared to party!
Hitting the Cambridge shops with friends?
Our team of City Ambassadors represent four nationalities and speak no fewer than 13 languages between them. To get to know them a bit better, we invited them to share their own traditions and how they celebrate Christmas.
Christmas in New Zealand Virginia Chou When I was a kid, I believed that Christmas was the most boring day in New Zealand. All the shops are closed, and every year the same Christmas cartoons and movies are repeated all day. Watching these movies made me wish that one day I could experience the winter wonderland of Christmas in countries across the world. However, as I grew older, I learnt to appreciate the sunshine, the calm sounds of the ocean and the spectacular views at New Zealand beaches, especially during the summer days. A typical Christmas could be having a barbeque for lunch with family and friends at the beach. Kids will run towards the ocean, dogs will chase the seagulls and you will see some family members you haven’t seen in forever.
In the evening, Christmas is celebrated with a feast, but before that, you can play games such as Secret Santa, and your favourite board games with your grandparents and guests. And whilst all this happening, you hear the clicks and clanks of the kitchen mayhem as your mother prepares for the feast by glazing the ham, seasoning the roasted vegetables, decorating the Christmas desserts and so much more. After dinner, opening presents are always exciting. When the party finishes, Christmas doesn’t have to. You can drive to Franklin Rd in Auckland and appreciate all the Christmas lights. Once you finally fall asleep, you can wake up knowing that breakfast, lunch and dinner will be ready to eat for days.
ITALIAN CHRISTMAS Ramona Canalella & Teresa Leone
The Christmas is the most important religious celebration in Italy. Christmas season starts from the 8 of December when people decorate their houses, set the nativity scene and put up their Christmas trees. All decorations are then removed after the 6 of January, the day of Epiphany. The Epiphany is the commemoration of the arrival of the three Magi with the gifts for the Christ nativity. However, the celebration depends on the regions. In the North of Italy, people use to meet friends and relatives for a dinner one day before Christmas on the 24 of December. The dinner consists of a lot of starters and two mains courses, tortellini pasta in beef soup, and beef roll roast with vegetables. And for dessert, traditional cakes called panettone and pandoro. After dinner, we play games

while we wait for midnight, the magic moment of Christmas gifts. Midnight is also a moment where people go to church for the Nativity service. In the south of Italy, Christmas is very important. People are spending more time with their families. Early December, people start meeting friends and relatives, in their own house every night, making dinners and playing cards or board games. On the 24 evening, they have a gorgeous dinner usually with fish-based food, at least 5 starters, 3 mains, sides and buffet dessert. On the 25 December, the Christmas day, a big lunch consisting of several starters, lasagne or cannelloni, beef roasted, sides, and desserts.
