WELCOME Welcome to the 2021

Love Summer Magazine Whilst 2020 was a challenging year for many, Cambridge is now open and the city’s retailers, cafes, hotels, restaurants and attractions have been working incredibly hard to ensure they can safely welcome back residents and visitors to enjoy our fabulous city. We are hoping that 2021 will be a much brighter year, with the city back to its usual vibrant self with lots to offer everyone. However before you visit it is recommended that you check that attractions, restaurants and shops are open and that events are taking place. All events and attractions are subject to any restrictions that may be put back in place, but we are hopeful they can all continue as planned. Now is a great time to rediscover the treasures that Cambridge has to offer, be it shopping to attractions and experiences – there is so much on offer. On page 14 we have put together a little Staycation Itinerary, giving you some ideas of where to stop during your visit to the city. Summer 2021 is set to bring us the biggest show on earth, the Olympics and we plan to screen the coverage on our large outdoor screen located near the Train Station. We will be showing the opening ceremony in the Market Square on Friday 23rd July followed by our ever-popular film nights. For a full line up of Love Cambridge Summer Events please visit pages 26 & 27. Becky Burrell, Cambridge BID

Colleges & TOURS

COLLEGES

Cambridge is famous for its university and many beautiful colleges are all well within easy walking distance of the city centre. The university and colleges organise many public events including concerts, comedy shows, plays and many more. More information can be found at www.cam.ac.uk/whatson Many of the colleges open their doors to the public so they can see the magnificent buildings and beautiful gardens. Visitors are usually welcome to walk through the courts to visit the chapels and in some cases halls and libraries – but as private places where people live and work throughout the year, there are some restrictions on access. Please contact the colleges directly to see whether they are open for visitors.

Punt Tours

Punting and Cambridge, two words that go hand in hand, and there are two sections of the river to discover. The 1 mile (1.6 km) stretch of river known as the College Backs is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Set amidst spacious lawns and intimate gardens are some of the University’s finest buildings, including King’s College Chapel, the Wren Library and the Bridge of Sighs. For many people this is the starting point for their experience of punting. Join a tour and explore the history of Cambridge or hire a boat for your very own river adventure. More tranquil than the College Backs, the Upper River meanders through idyllic countryside to the beautiful village of Grantchester. This popular retreat, lying some 2.5 miles (4 km) south of the city, was once the beloved home of the poet Rupert Brooke. Follow in the wake of generations of day-trippers, hire your own canoe, kayak or punt, and head off to take afternoon tea at the Orchard Tea Garden or relax on the meadows. Head to the river and jump onboard a Visit England accredited experience – from a romantic tour for two or a sparkling Champagne celebration, there are many options to choose from.

Shopping local is the definitely the ethical choice, with less deliveries meaning less trucks on the road, and fewer emissions. When it comes to produce, you’d often be supporting your local farmers whilst being safe in the knowledge that your food has had a short field-to-plate journey. For some amazing local meals in Cambridge, we recommend visiting DoppleGanger Burger for delicious vegan burgers, or have a beautiful Sunday Roast or steak from the Cambridge Chop House. Cambridge is fortunate to include over 250 independent businesses, ranging from food and drink, bike shops, gifts, clothing and much more. Pick up an Independents Map showcasing a variety of great businesses – and explore, shop and eat local.

DOG Friendly Cambridge is fast becoming a destination that our four-legged friends can enjoy just as much as us. From dining, to punting there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

PA R K & R I D E Accessing the city with your pooch has never been easier with the network of Park & Ride buses allowing you to travel with your dog for free (however, they will need to sit on the floor). Buses run from five sites across the city, and tickets cost as little as £3 return with children travelling free when accompanied by an adult.

Scudamore’s Take your time to enjoy a trip down the riverbank with man’s best friend by your side. Scudamore’s Punting love nothing more than seeing our furry friends join them on a punting trip. You can choose between a punting tour or hire your own punt with your canine companions.

S TA R B U C K S PUPPUCCINO The best kept secret is finally out, the majority of Starbucks across the city will make your puppy friend his or her very own Puppuccino if you ask. It’s nothing too fancy, just a cup of whipped cream but boy will your four-legged friend love you for it. Usually free of charge, the baristas may insist on fussing over your canine companion in return for a Puppuccino.

S U O L L E V O O M Art Trail for all the family 28th June - 4th September 2021

Cows about Cambridge is a fun and free sculpture trail of Cows that will help you explore the city from a different perspective this summer from 28th June - 4th September. Designed to entertain and enrich, it’s informative too and leaves a lasting legacy for the city and local children’s charity, Break. Artists from the region and further afield have come together with leading businesses to create colourful and thoughtful designs on large Cow sculptures. School pupils and community groups from across the county also showcase their artistic talents and imaginations on smaller Cows - the mini moos.

WHY A COW? The Cow sculpture has been created specifically for Cambridge. It’s inspired by the rare Red Poll cattle, which have been a part of everyday life on the city’s commons for hundreds of years. The sculptures aim to encourage discussion through art. Spot designs that explore environmental issues, mental health, the natural world, and innovations in science.

TELL US MOOOO-RE! More than 80 Cows, both big and small, will be exhibited in streets, parks, and cultural hubs throughout Cambridge. Ann-Marie Miller of Carbon Orange design studio is one of the artists involved. She attended Art School at Anglia Ruskin University and has created Doodle Cow, sponsored by Cambridge BID. The design takes its cues from Anne-Marie’s work, translating conversations at conferences, meetings and workshops in real-time into graphics. She says: “I love living in Cambridge and seeing the cows on the common land. When I saw the call for artists, it seemed like a really fun opportunity to do something quite different to my usual work and have it displayed in a unique way. “It’s a design that I hope will encourage people to get up close and learn something from. The colour inspiration comes from Cambridge blue, the red of the Red Poll cattle, and the colour of milk! “I’ve really loved working on my Cow and meeting the other artists. I think the 3D Cow is beautiful, it’s a lovely sculpture.” Doodle Cow is one of two sculptures sponsored by Cambridge BID, the Principal Partner of Cows about Cambridge. They have also sponsored MooMoo-o-Tron III by anonymous art duo, Dinky Doors.

Wild in Art has produced many spectacular events across the globe and is the organisation behind the art trail. It brings together businesses and creative sectors with schools and local communities through the creation of uniquely painted sculptures. Charlie Langhorne, Co-founder and Managing Director of Wild in Art, adds: “We’re over the ‘moooon’ to have the support of Cambridge BID, a collaboration of 1,200 businesses working together to create a world-class experience for all who visit, live and work in Cambridge. Alongside them as our Principal Partner, it’s with great pleasure to be collaborating with and raising vital funds for the children’s charity, Break.”

C O W- M U N I T Y COW-NECTIONS Teams of residents have taken part in workshops with professional artists to design a number of Cows, which are exhibited in The Grafton.

Track your trail Cows about Cambridge is the perfect excuse to get the whole family together and get moo-ving! You can start your trail adventure with Thameslink, our Official Travel Partner and take the train to Cambridge. Whatever way you are exploring – by foot, bike or punt. Reconnect with the city as you discover where the sculptures are located, and enjoy the fresh air with family and friends whilst taking part in this free activity. Pick up a trail map or download the official Cows about Cambridge app to find the locations. Look for the 4-digit codes to unlock the Cows and receive rewards, discount vouchers, special offers and exclusive giveaways. After the art trail closes, there’s one last chance to see all the Cows together before they go to their forever homes.

Funded by Arts Council England, the inspiring Heard by the Herd collection has been created by groups that have to work harder to get their voices heard; LGBTQ+ community, women living in isolation, and young people from one of the most economically deprived areas.

B U Y AT AUCTION Break is tackling youth homelessness across East Anglia with its innovative post care support programme, Staying Close, Staying Connected. Many sculptures take centre stage at a glittering charity auction at the end of the trail. You could own these ‘udderly’ unique works of art and help the team continue this vital work with vulnerable young people and families. For all the breaking ‘moos’ from the trail and to register your interest in the auction, visit cowsaboutcambridge.co.uk and follow the herd on social media #cowsaboutcambridge.

Whatever your appetite, there is something to suit all tastes, from intimate brasseries, fine dining and cosmopolitan cuisine, to familyfriendly restaurants and charming tea rooms. Let’s go on a little wander to look at what Cambridge has to offer.

For the best places for mums and dads to take the family, there are a few family-friendly restaurants where the little ones can run around and make as much noise as they like. If you want to eat with the River as your backdrop, then head to Quayside where you will find a range of high street eateries which include Byron Burgers, Cote, new kid on the block Middletons and Café Foy which is a lively Independent café bar located right by the river. If you want to experience a run of pubs, look no further than King Street which is home to a number of them including The Cambridge Brew House, The Champion of the Thames, King Street Run and Stolen. There are also a number of cafes for you to visit including the very popular Locker Cafe. In the heart of the city is The Pint Shop and is renowned for its no nonsense menu and fantastic homemade bar snacks including Scotch Eggs the size of tennis balls! Further along Bene’t Street you will find Smokeworks (tucked down Free School Lane), Bread and Meat, The Eagle and a fantastic ice cream parlour, Jacks Gelato.

Over on Market Square Franco Manca offers traditional sourdough pizza or pop into Five Guys or Tortilla for a grab & go meal. Just off Market Street you will find popular bars Ta Bouche and Town & Gown who will not only feed you, but also offer some of the city’s best cocktails. Venture up Rose Crescent to visit La Raza or head round into Trinity Street and you can combine eating with art appreciation at the Michaelhouse Café. Whilst you are in the area, don’t forget Fitzbillies on Trumpington Street for that legendary sticky Chelsea Bun. Continue walking along Trumpington Street and you will find seafood restaurant Loch Fyne and Browns Bar and Brasserie along with the bistro at Hotel Du Vin and fabulous independent café Hot Numbers. St Andrews Street and Regent Street are a hotbed of bars and restaurants and will cater for a range of tastes. High Street chains include Wagamama, All Bar One, Nando’s and The Regal and if you fancy something a little more unique there are plenty of Independent eateries covering a high range of cuisine including Greek, Indian, Chinese and Italian. Pick up a copy of our Independent Map and you will see the huge choice available.

The Grafton has seen a sudden influx of eateries in their new Food Social quarter upstairs on the first floor. New restaurants include Amelie, Chi and Burger Priest. Within the centre, the famous Gail’s Bakery has opened, which is most definitely worth a visit.

The newly developed CB1 estate close to the Station will also offer you a choice of eateries including Wasabi, Pret a Manger, Café Nero and The Old Ticket Office which overlooks the station platform. A new urban Indian Restaurant Tawa Kitchen has recently opened near the station which offers fresh, exciting flavours and in spring 2021, award winning Stem & Glory will be relocating to this area. If you are fortunate to be in the area on a Friday lunch time, next to The Clayton Hotel you can find FoodPark which is a street food collective offering fresh, innovative lunches at affordable prices. Hills Road also offers a range of lunch time pit stops including The Cambridge Oven, Cambridge Blue and a branch of Norfolk Street Bakery, who can resist the Portuguese custard tarts?

Cambridge can offer, there’s so

much to try, you will want to come back for more!

CAMBRIDGE A Purple Flag City Purple Flag celebrates Cambridge for being a safe and vibrant evening and night-time destination, with its diverse array of dining, entertainment, and cultural activities. Cambridge secured Purple Flag status last year and is one of only 70 towns and cities across the UK and Ireland, which have achieved this national performance standard. The Purple Flag standard, launched in 2012, is an accreditation process similar to the Green Flag award for parks and the Blue Flag for beaches. It allows members of the public to quickly identify town and city centres that offer an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out. As the governing body, ATCM (Association of Town & City Management) has set 5 core standards, against which accredited locations are measured.

What is Purple Flag?

To understand what Purple Flag is and what it means for Cambridge we have caught up with the CAMBAC Crime Reduction Manager to find out more: When was Cambridge Awarded Purple Flag Status? In September 2019 Cambridge was awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy (ENTE). Why do you think Cambridge was successful in its application? The night-time economy within Cambridge is hugely diverse, thanks in part to a huge student population that come from all over the world. A wide variety of leisure and hospitality businesses means that everyone is catered for, not just the younger demographic. A food-loving city, Cambridge celebrates a mix of independent businesses and larger chains to maintain the breadth of appeal. The same can be said for licensed premises, with everything from underground cocktail bars to high-capacity venues, places for the discerning drinker to light up dancefloors, there is something for everyone. What does Purple Flag status mean for Cambridge? It means as a city, partnership agencies across all sectors work closely together, with safety and cleanliness a priority, to ensure that Cambridge maintains its excellent reputation. It should give customers coming into Cambridge confidence that the evening and night-time economy is well managed, connected and striving to deliver a vibrant and safe experience. Can you name a few of your favourite venues for an evening out? I have 2 young children so any opportunity to spend some time in the city is a real treat. I love the atmosphere and food in Smokeworks and the waiting team are always so friendly. A cocktail in Novi is a must, I love the décor and the bar staff have so much knowledge on which is the best cocktail to have.

Staying Safe

One of the key elements underpinning Purple Flag is promoting a safe evening and night-time economy and in July 2020 being ‘Covid safe’ has been added to this as businesses reopened after the national lockdown. Since re-opening in July, the Cambridge Licensing and Police authorities (along with CAMBAC and Pubwatch) have been working closely with all venues to help them ensure they are safe and compliant. Some of the safety initiatives highlighted in Cambridge through the Purple Flag process include:

Some specific COVID initiatives you will see around the City when you visit include:

TA X I M A R S H A L S

Test &

Providing professionally trained licensed Taxi Marshals on key dates throughout the year helps to ensure people get home swiftly and safely after enjoying a night out in Cambridge. Operating from the central St Andrew’s Street Taxi Rank, the Marshals manage the busy night-time queues, providing priority to anyone in distress or vulnerable whilst assisting the wider city requirements of dispersal. They operate on the last weekend of each month and some extra dates such as Bank Holidays, Halloween, each weekend in December and New Years Eve.

Street Pastors Working primarily on Friday and Saturday nights the street pastors are trained volunteers from local churches. Their aim is to care for, listen to, and help people who are out on the streets after a night out in the city. They work with the NightLite refuge which provides a safe space for people to rest, recover or wait for friends or a taxi.

ASK FOR ANGELA

TRACE

Hospitality venues are now required to display a QR code so customers can scan this upon arrival as an alternative to providing their contact details. If customers can’t scan the QR code then all venues in hospitality, tourism or the leisure industry must ask all members of the party to provide their name and contact details.

K N OW B E F O R E YO U GO & THE ‘WE’RE G O O D TO G O ’ M A R K Know Before you Go is the key message – research where you are visiting, opening hours, ticket systems and what to expect. The ‘We’re Good to Go’ mark was launched by Visit Britain and Visit England. Businesses complete a self-assessment including a check-list confirming they have put the necessary processes in place, before receiving certification and the ‘We’re Good to Go’ mark for display in their premises and online. For added reassurance, an ‘alert’ system is in place to notify any business signed up to the standard of any changes to official guidance so you can visit with confidence.

A nationally recognised scheme that has been adopted in Cambridge, facilitated by Cambridge Business Against Crime (CAMBAC). The scheme arose in response to an increase in online dating with people meeting strangers in venues and supporting people who may feel uneasy when meeting someone for the first time. Individuals can approach bar staff, ‘ask for Angela’ and in doing so discreetly alert them to the fact that they feel vulnerable so staff can take appropriate action.
