Welcome, Welcome to Toast, Cornwall’s student lifestyle magazine. A project devised by you, in collaboration with Truro-based publisher Cornwall and Devon Media. We set a brief to students from across Cornwall to write, design, shoot and illustrate this unique guide, providing an insight into life in the county by people who have lived and experienced it. This is what happened... Inspiring success stories; exceptional photography; where to eat; who to follow; where to bike; swim; walk; rollerskate and dive. Finds; designs; places and people; who to watch and places to watch them; and where to take your parents when they are in town. Pages of exciting designs, sprinkled with talent - we don’t need to big up the fashion pages, they do that by themselves. This is not about burnt bread but a celebration of the talent we have in this county. Students of Cornwall we salute you.

Dolly has created an elegantly t ailored collec tion combining British tradition with an eccentric flourish. The pieces are all hand craf ted using British sourced fabrics.

L aura’s work echoes John L autner ’s architec ture, adopting the clean lines and raw edges found in classic mid - centur y buildings. The innovative clothing is shaped from upholster y fabrics.

Katie culminates sci-f i classics and development s in technolog y to produce a look that hint s at future space vacationing. This concept is represented through sof t pleating and simple linear shapes.

ACADEMY NATHAN OUTL AW MICHELIN - STARRED SUPPORT AT CORNWALL COLLEGE GE T TING help and advice from t wo of Brit ain’s best respec ted chef s is helping catering student s at Cornwall College forge ahead in their career s. They are par t of the Academy Nathan Outlaw at Pool campus – where they are of fered help and guidance not just from t wo Michelin-st arred Nathan himself, but also from Padstow chef Paul Ainswor th, who was awarded his f ir st st ar last year. The academy, set up in 2012, has already seen t wo pupils land job’s at Nathan’s acclaimed rest aurant in Rock. Nathan said: “I’m immensely proud and excited to be par t of something so special. “Academy Nathan Outlaw is all about adding a lit tle bit ex tra to something that is already ver y good, making sure the student s get the most out of their education and hopefully creating chef s that are ex tremely t alented, who will go on to be successful in the industr y.

Tomas, was of fered a commis chef position in Nathan’s kitchens af ter completing his work placement there last Oc tober. He said: “Working for Nathan is great. He’s so knowledgeable and he’s seen so much.

“This projec t is something that I’ve been really passionate about , ever since I st ar ted employing Cornwall College apprentices in 20 0 4.”

“He invites a lot of other brilliant chef s to the rest aurant to give masterclasses, like top pastr y chef Claire Clarke and celebrit y chef Valentine Warner, and we ac tually get to work with them, which is amazing.”

Paul Ainswor th, who runs the No 6 rest aurant in Padstow, added: “This is a fant astic venture and suppor ting education is impor t ant and why we’re here today.

Alex , who is working in the front of house team, added: “I didn’t expec t Nathan to approach my tutor s, so I was surprised and pleased! I’m really enjoying it and Nathan’s been great.

“It ’s the future and I’m a big suppor ter already as I work quite closely with Fif teen and employ their chef s, so I’ll happily do the same with Academy Nathan Outlaw.”

“The rest aurant is nice and modern, the other st af f are helpful and I get to meet lot s of dif ferent people, including the cast and crew from IT V ’s ‘Doc Mar tin’.

Alex Michell, 18 from Chacewater near Truro, and Tomas Pavilonis, 27 from Camborne, have both started working part-time for Nathan after attending the academy.

“I also have to tr y some of the dishes too, so I can learn about them. The food is amazing, so it’s a definite perk of the job.” 15

BREWERY TOUR

A S STUDENTS IT’S PROBABLY FAIR TO SAY THAT WE ENJOY A DRINK , BUT HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT WHERE THAT ALCOHOL COMES FROM?

A brewer y tour may sound like a bit of a boring ac tivit y, but what about a tour in a brewer y with it s own pub, one where the ethos is to let you drink , relax and educate you about their passion?

interesting and was so knowledgeable. He invited questions and knew all the answer s, plus more! If you’ve never thought how your drink get s to you glass then this is a must , what ’s bet ter than seeing the way your drink is made then being able to t aste it in the same building? It ’s really good value too; at £6.50 for student s it ’s a pret t y cheap trip.

Skinner s Brewer y tour in Truro is a fun, if slightly unusual, day out. The tour st ar t s as you’d hope with a sample of their ale (we went for half a pint , but they did of fer a pint.) You can choose from a selec tion of their ten real ales including Skin Dog, Helegan Honey, Por thleven. Spriggan, and Bet t y stogs. We chose Helegan Honey, it ’s nice and sweet if ale is a bit bit ter for your t aste.

We think it would be great for student s who have just moved into halls or in with new people, t ake your flat mates out and t aste a bit of Cornwall whilst get ting to know each other! They also do an evening par t y tour where you need bet ween ten and f if t y people. At £16.0 0 per per son it ’s a bit more expensive but for this you get the brewer y to your selves for three hour s, hot pasties and they ’ll even bring in wine and cider.

The tour of the brewer y is informative and not too long. There aren’t many ingredient s that go into these drink s and the brewer y, though not micro, isn’t a massive one. Our tour guide, Bob, made it

IT’S BEEN ALMOST T WO YE ARS SINCE OWNER RUPERT ELLIS OPENED THE DOORS OF ESPRESSINI IN FALMOUTH AND INVITED THE PUBLIC TO COME AND BE A PART OF HIS E XCITING ADVENTURE INTO THE COFFEE UNKNOWN.

“Our mission”, Ruper t explains, “will always be to deliver ex traordinar y cof fee whilst having fun. We make each cup bet ter than the last , and engage with our customer s to provide them with an enriching experience that provides them with something more than just great cof fee”. “The ultimate idea has been to create a communit y culture around an aspirational destination. I like to think that Espressini is like a giant magnet , around it ever y thing else evolves out wards in an order from chaos fashion; a gathering of ideas which converge together to make the sum of it ’s tot al greater than it ’s individual component s”. E xhibitions, pop -up rest aurant s, and live music, are just some of the exciting collaborations with student s, past and present , at Espressini. “By working in par tner ship with lot s of dif ferent people, you ultimately create a power ful collec tion of t alent that challenges mediocrit y. There is a huge oppor tunit y for the univer sit y and the town to engage by using the student t alent as a catalyst. We tr y to push the boundaries of our chosen specialist subjec t , and we like free thinker s who ‘can do’, and will demonstrate the same”. Get ting involved is simple, “come up with an idea we can chat about over cof fee”.

UNTIL t wo years ago, ask anyone about Cornish comedy, and the only name you’d hear would be “Jethro”.

The ver y epitome of an old -st yle ‘blue’ comedian, and best friends with Jim Davidson, he represented many people’s idea of Cornwall – a lit tle bit out- of- date compared to the rest of the countr y. However, all that has changed with the creation of the Kernow King – the internet comedy sensation who is now building a career for himself as a st and -up. The charac ter is the creation of Roche - born Ed Rowe, whose love of making people laugh st ar ted at a young age. He said: “I think Kernow King has always been there, when I was growing up in Roche I was always a bit of a show of f, and that ’s continued. “I did an English and drama degree before I worked at Roche Foods for a year, saving up to go to drama school in London. “I did a few bit s and pieces af ter that , but I suppose it really st ar ted when I entered a competition to win a trip to Los A ngeles.” “We spoofed a California tourism adver t with the charac ter who would turn out to be Kernow King – and we won. W hen we arrived back , we carried on making a few videos, and it has all t aken of f from there.”

The videos, hosted on the Kernow King’s YouTube channel, t ake a sideways look at life in Cornwall. They soon grew in popularit y, and within a year he made the move into st and -up comedy, proving an immediate hit , selling out the Hall for Cornwall in Truro – the Duchy ’s largest venue - earlier this year. Now he is looking fur ther af ield, with a series of gigs planned around the UK , where his obser vations of Cornish ways and customs are already proving a hit. The biggest challenge he now faces is continuing to come up with the material to make his audiences laugh. He said: “I see it like creating a pic ture. It ’s easy to come up with the outline drawing, but it ’s all the colouring in and det ail that makes a great painting. “You have to go through all the ideas you have, decide which are good, which can be improved, and then go from there.” It is a formula that seems to be working judging by the feedback he receives. Ed said: “A student came up to me the other day at the beach and told me my videos were the reason he decided to come and study in Cornwall – he had seen them and decided ‘that ’s the place for me.’” “You cannot get a bet ter compliment than that.”

Your guide to student bands

Lilium

soundcloud.com /andrew-heselton This band of four features frontman A ndrew Heselton, bassist Adam ‘SMA S’ Sams, lead guit arist Alex Donnan and drummer Sam Dobbyn. The group play music for the sake of music it self (with passion, not pretentiousness that inspires them) and prefer to play live, relishing the unpredic t abilit y of gigs and their audiences. Lilium appreciate the subjec tivit y of their music and prefer to go without a genre label, placing instead a strong emphasis on the melodic choruses of their songs with the intent of encouraging the audience to join in, af ter all what bet ter gig is there than one with an at tentive, rambunc tious audience? These guys are going places, having per formed at the 2013 Boardmaster s festival and completed a successful London tour this summer, so if you hear it on the grapevine that they ’re per forming be sure to go, dance and sing.

Jack Wallen

jack wallenmusic.com BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson has described him as already having “the three qualities many aspiring ar tist s never achieve in a lifetime: Charac ter, charisma, and ut ter convic tion.” Wallen, a singer songwriter and guit arist whose gentle acoustic blend of folk , jazz and soul is ver y real and ver y raw is inspired by the narrative garnered from the emotion of experience. Like any down to ear th ar tist , this guy believes that “You should dream big, and def initely be ambitious, but also know that a living wage doing something you love, or in the name of something or someone you love, is all that mat ter s.” His philosophies are reflec ted in the stellar 9/10 rating of his E.P “W hat Money Can’t Buy” alongside his per formance at 2013’s Beach Break Live. A s a t alented musician and lovely man it ’s a must to see a Wallen gig during your time in Falmouth.

Isaac Sakima

isaacsakima.co.uk Isaac Sakima’s 5 star single ‘Let the Right One in” prompted record label Rebel Hill to snap the man up. Such is the result of his emotive pop music that seek s to empower the listener through the positive melancholic under tones of his writing, reflec tive of his influences including L ana Del Ray and Rufus Wainwright. Sakima’s musical work is varied, working as a solo ar tist and as a par ticipant of collaborative ef for t s; his gigs are acoustically jazz y whereas with his studio and recorded work the music tends to lean towards being “dramatic and escapist”. But all together these aspec t s combine to form a Falmouth firework , the likes of which are due to explode onto the music scene in a shor t time. Unfor tunately Sakima graduated in the summer of 2013 and is now based in London, but if word get s out of him returning to the South West for a gig or t wo, it ’s imperative to go! 4

Lily and Meg

soundcloud.com /lily-34 An acoustic folk duo who command the banjo, guitar, harmonica, piano and vocals to give spellbinding per formances that have graced almost ever y corner of the South West and a good leg of the London music circuit thank s to their ex tensive touring. They ’ve per formed on BBC Radio Cornwall and at the Eden Projec t ’s “Eden sessions” as well as suppor ting ac t s such as William the Conqueror

and Jo Hamilton. Their music and collaborative song writing possess a natural air and flow that conveys their genuine enjoyment and passion in the creation of music, delivered with great maturit y. Lily and Meg also host the Somer wick Sessions, intimate monthly gigs that have been hugely successful and held in some stunning locations including the Barefoot A mphitheatre. So if you’re looking for alternative folk music and incredible gigs then a Lily and Meg per formance is necessar y!

The PJP Band

2

thepjpband.com These guys t ake a strong philosophical approach to their music (a keyboard centric 3 piece), using their fascination with energies to create music reminiscent of The Strangler s and The Door s, enhanced by their consideration of punk and alternative scene ethos and use of organ instrument ation. In terms of musical deliver y PJP pushes at boundaries aiming to make “music for the people, to challenge the people”. With lyrics revolving around and merging ideas of sociolog y, existentialism and humanism into one channel that is received as the PJP band. A nd well received they are having had their single “I am a Racer” played on BBC Radio 1 and per forming on the BBC Introducing st age at Glastonbur y 2011. If it ’s something new and unique you want to listen to, the PJP is your band.

John Crooks

HND MEDIA MOVING IMAGE, PHOTOGRAPHY AT TRURO COLLEGE

John Crooks formed DOGBITE with Morgan Lowndes and Luke Power in 2004 when they found themselves constantly working together as freelancers on the same jobs. Deciding that “together we are stronger” the three joined and rapidly accrued an excellent reputation. Eight years on they have grown from pups to pedigrees, and along with company director Michelle Taylor, built the DOGHOUSE studio and formed DOGBITE Ltd. DOGBITE is a creative film production company based in Falmouth working in features, shorts, broadcast TV, live streaming, commercials, music promos, and branded content.

Career highlight so far? Setting up our own Studio and working with such a great team of people is a pretty good achievement so far. Career highlight, Tricky question… Still waiting for the big one to happen really. I guess when it happens I can retire. I remember watching the BAFTA’s in 2009 on a rubbish old TV in my shed whilst working on an edit and discovering a short film I worked on had won which was cool as the film had a very low budget with a tiny crew. I have also been lucky enough to meet some cool people along the way. Jack Black, Paul Weller, Lily Allen, Howard Marks but mainly the crew of people I usually work with. Who would you love to collaborate with? Chris Cunningham. I really like his work, ballsey and beautiful. Current biggest influences? My Children. Life and the Ocean.

Where and what did you study? HND Media Moving Image, Photography at Truro College Why did you choose to study in Cornwall? Because it was where I lived and all my mates went there. I can’t really say that I chose to study Media in Truro as part of a career path. Back then I was more concerned about having fun and part ying, I actually started college studying Art but changed to media as I fancied a girl on the course. It’s funny how things turn out in life, and if I had the chance/time to go back to college I would probably study Philosophy. Where can we see your stuff? On T V, You Tube, Facebook, Twitter and w w w.dogbitefilmcrew.com

p38_39_toast.indd 1

Future plans? To continue building the company, and generating more opportunities for others. Above all to continue creating great work with that all important wow factor. Favourite place in Cornwal? Jumping off the rocks at Trevellas whilst the sunsets or back of the blue anchor on flora day Craziest student moment? Can’t tell you or I may get arrested. Top Toast topping? Marmite + Avocado.

DOGBITE are firm believers in working with Universities and colleges to demonstrate how real-world experience from learning and working with businesses through education programs can successfully nurture and grow future professionals. They have run their “Film School project, which has been running with Cornwall College for 8 years, which sees year 1 HND media students work with them over a 2-week period to produce a short film. Their challenge is to concept, script write, storyboard, cast, set build, shoot (often on location), edit, compose music, and finally put on a glittering film premiere in front of their course leaders and peers. In a nutshell, one hell of a fast track and insight into the Media and Film Industry.

The company employs a full-time pic ture desk manager, and has forged link s with pic ture agencies across the globe – meaning student s and alumni can see their work used internationally. Mal added: “We have covered news stories including the Olympic Torch parade, the Cornish floods, and are also now providing moving images and other media.

“That was the bir th of Car tel Photos – and it is a car tel with fixed prices to ensure we did not take work from photographer s already working in the local area.”

“Through our link s with RE X features we have the abilit y to of fer ever y student six week s paid work experience, providing an insight into the business they would not get any where else.

Car tel now have more than 120 photographer s they can call on – both past and present student s – with more joining each Oc tober.

AFTER LECTURES ALL DAY, A PINT IS THE ANSWER... OR IS IT?...

Af ter lec tures all week a pint is a good shout , but hold on to that thought... W hy not hang on to the pint , and do something dif ferent? W hy not look under the sea? Cornwall has one of the greatest coastlines in the world and what bet ter way to experience and enjoy the sight s than from within the sea. Cornwall’s coastline is dot ted with perilous reef s, and lying just under the sur face lie countless homages to it s histor y. The coast is dot ted with ancient t all ships, Nazi submarines, modern tug boat s and countless other s all with their own t ales to tell. Many ships went down with precious cargos-still waiting to be discovered, other s took their crews with them on their f inal journeys to the sea bed. In our modern day lifest yle there’s a lot to be said for having a beautiful environment to experience daily and feel happy and healthy in.” – Hannah Robinson, Illustration graduate. “I love it here because it feels like a holiday, ever yday. The people are kind, friendly and polite. W hen the weather is nice there is a really good clif f diving spot at swanpool beach - I like to chill there with a few friends, beer and a bbq.” –Jack Mills, studying to be a Tree Surgeon

Letting: TOP TIPS

Townsend Accommodation give Jasmine Ir ving their top five tips on student let ting

1. Check your Propert y

At the star t of your tenanc y go through your proper t y and let the agent or landlord know if you have any concerns. Use your camera to highlight any point s - af ter all, “a pic ture is wor th a thousand words”.

2. Know your neighbours

The people living nex t to and around you play an impor t ant par t on how the student population are perceived in your area. A good relationship with these people is essential for a happy and harmonious tenanc y. Don’t be afraid to introduce your selves to your neighbour s and under st and their circumst ances so you can be respec t ful to them and their families.

3. Keep it clean!

Your house is your home for the duration of your tenanc y. Treat it with the same respec t you would your own home. Set ting up a cleaning rot a can help you keep on top of your house and make life a lot easier for you and your housemates. Cont ac t your local council for bin collec tion and rec ycling pickup days and ensure your rubbish is protec ted from the element s and any potential pest s.

4. Lock it up

Many times during a tenanc y period we f ind proper ties unlocked and with nobody around. Make sure you lock up your house if nobody is home. Your per sonal items and equipment are of ten expensive to replace and your insurer won’t pay out if you have not done all you can to secure your belongings.

5. Budget, Budget, Budget

Keeping an eye on your f inances is impor t ant. A s well as rent al payment s, your proper t y may not include bills so keeping on top of meter readings will give you and your utilit y supplier s a bet ter under st anding of your bills. Changing supplier s may be the best way to get a bet ter deal on your main supply of gas and elec tricit y, but be careful to get all the information before switching. Check the local paper s and adver tising for free or discounted event s you may be interested in, this is a good way to get out and about on a budget.

Let tings specialist s DIGs f ind houses for student s across Falmouth and Penr yn. Here, they tell Jasmine Ir ving about the ser vices they of fer… Q: WHO A RE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO? A : We are DIGs, a student let ting specialist agenc y. We f ind accommodation in Falmouth and Penr yn. Mostly it ’s privately owned but we have t wo block s of student flat s in Falmouth called The View and A rmyn House. Q: HOW WOU LD YOU DE A L WITH ANY POTENTIA L PROBLEMS? A : We under st and that it ’s of ten a student s f ir st time away from home, so for example they might not have ever changed a light bulb before and we can send our maintenance guys to show them how. We’re the only agenc y who have a 24 hour maintenance ser vice and we do regular inspec tions to check ever y thing’s okay. If housemates aren’t get ting on, we ask them to put their issues into writing and we tr y to sor t it out to alleviate the problem but if this doesn’t work then we can help one of them to f ind a new house. Q: WHAT’S AN AVER AGE DEPOSIT PRICE A STU DENT C AN E X PEC T TO PAY WITH YOU? A : Usually, one and a half months rent. There is a £6 0 admin fee because there’s a lot of paper work to process, e.g applications, guarantor forms etc. Q: WHAT IS YOU R A DVICE ON GET TING DEPOSITS BACK AT THE END OF THE TENANC Y? A : Make sure the house is clean, properly clean which involves ac tually hovering under the sofa and in cupboards! The main reason student s don’t get their deposit s back is because we have to get in professional cleaner s. Also if there’s a lot of damp caused from condensation. So, over the year, keep air circulating by opening the windows regularly.
