Director’s Note A history? Really? For many, when they think of Shakespeare, it’s all about the comedies (filled as they are with easy love stories and fast puns). But it’s the histories that are some of The Bard’s most accessible and direct plays, complete with blood & guts, war & mayhem and, in the case of Richard III, all of the above...along with ambition & bad behavior. Richard III is one of Shakespeare’s most performed plays worldwide– playing this year at the Cameri in Tel Aviv as well (in Hebrew). Making it accessible for an outdoor performance took careful adaptation, a hard-working production team, and a dedicated cast of players. Our aim? To share this tale of divided loyalties, of family dysfunction, of treachery & murder. It’s not a pretty story but it is a fascinating one– watch for strong women who “speak the truth” of what’s going on, and the men who only “see the truth” when death looms. It’s lots of fun and we hope that you enjoy tonight’s performance. Thanks to the Jerusalem municipality for their support of this year’s production and to Encore Educational Theatre Company for their fiscal sponsorship. Thank you to all those who sponsored ads in the program... Every bit helps!

Synopsis Richard, Duke of Gloucester, brother to King Edward IV, plots to gain the crown. He maneuvers his other brother Clarence into prison, and later has him killed. Richard then seduces and marries Lady Anne, the daughter-in-law of the late King Henry VI (who was slain by Richard). A family gathering turns sour when the banished Queen Margaret (Henry VI’s widow) appears and curses everyone in court. The ailing King Edward dies from shock when he hears of Clarence’s death, and Richard and the Duke of Buckingham begin to isolate King Edward’s heirs– Prince Edward and the young Duke of York. When Queen Elizabeth hears of the capture of her brother Rivers, and her son Grey (who are later executed), she takes sanctuary along with the old Duchess of York (Richard’s mother). Richard then masterminds a council meeting and does away with Hastings, the Lord Chamberlain. Richard and Buckingham persuade the Mayor and citizens that Richard should be named king. Richard is crowned and quickly does away with his wife Anne, moving his sights onto Young Elizabeth as a means to solidify his position. Richard decides to kill the young princes, and alienates Buckingham for equivocating. Buckingham flees, but is later captured and put to death. Queen Elizabeth, the Duchess, and Margaret, lamenting the princes’ death, intercept Richard on his way to quell a growing rebellion. After an intense battle of wits, Richard seemingly convinces Elizabeth to let him marry her daughter. Richard begins to fall apart, lashing out at his allies, as the Earl of Richmond gathers forces to oppose Richard. The night before the battle, Richard is visited by the ghosts of everyone he’s killed. The armies meet, Richard is unhorsed and duels Richmond on foot. Richmond wins, and is crowned King Henry VII, finally bringing peace to England and founding the Tudor dynasty. Read more information about the play online: theaterintherough . co . il / richardiii
