WORDS FROM THE EDITOR Are you having an enjoyable and safe summer? Our prayer for you during this time off is that you will dig deeper in the Word of God and find ways to keep the fire for Christ burning. The world needs young Christians like you to stand up and live out loud for God. There are many people, including some of your friends, who don’t know the truth about God and how great it is to have a relationship with Him. Yes, it can be difficult to start a conversation about God – perhaps even a little scary. But it is great to remember that when you ask God for a spirit of boldness and strength, He will come through and deliver on His promise to never leave you nor forsake you – especially in a scary moment. One of my favourite Bible verses, also the second verse I ever memorized, is 1 Timothy 4:12. It says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” I encourage you to take that verse and let Christ shine through you by the way you live your life, the way you speak, love and remain pure. There will be many temptations to conform to this dark and scary world because it looks and seems like it’s fun and liberating, but always remember that this world is temporary and that our goal is to live eternity in heaven with Jesus. Someone once said to me, “Everyone will live forever, it’s just a matter of where you will live forever. Heaven or hell?” I don’t know about you, but I want to live forever in heaven with my family and friends. I also take this opportunity to say goodbye to you and all supporters of Love Is Moving (LIM) magazine. My time as senior editor has come to an end and I will deeply miss putting every issue together in faith that it will inspire you and help you grow in your Christian walk. This has been an incredible opportunity thanks to the Love Movement, The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, and you the readers. Should you ever need a friend in Christ, I will always be available. Yours sincerely, Crileidy Liriano

WORDS FROM THE EDITORS IN CHIEF Over the last seven years, God has spoken through many influential leaders to guide Love Is Moving to where it is today. From the development of media curriculum, events, a television series, and a magazine, many key people and organizations moved the Love Is Moving ministry forward through humble sacrifice and service. Along this road, it has been a significant privilege to be mentored by humble and wise people such as Bill Winger, who has been executive vice president of the EFC (Evangelical Fellowship of Canada) throughout the history of Love Is Moving. Bill is one of many who God used to bring this magazine to where it is today. Bill recently retired from the EFC and we want to take a moment to say: Thank you very much, Bill, for catching the vision of Love Is Moving and for being instrumental in growing its impact across Canada. May God bless you in your retirement. We are sure He is not done with you yet. We love you, Bill! Best regards, Benjamin Porter and Joel Gordon Founders of Love Is Moving magazine

COMICS

David Helgerson London, ON

I drew this comic to visualize two worlds that battle within us. One world (here symbolized by the TV) reflects the broken state of man. The other world (the Bible) reflects God’s world which embodies everlasting truth and life. We all have a choice to make daily. We must “click out” and “click in,” and it is our choice in which world to spend our time in. The character in the comic, Joe, clicks “out” of the broken world and into God’s world. ENCOUNTERING JESUS Words by Candace Maxymowich

The world is full of people who are spiritually thirsty. The story of the woman of Samaria teaches us that each person matters to Jesus and each can be filled with living water. Maybe you already know the story? Traveling from Jerusalem, Jesus and His disciples took the quickest route through Samaria. Jews didn’t normally travel on a Samaritan road, but Jesus chose to walk this way anyway. Tired and thirsty, Jesus sat by a well while His disciples went to a nearby village. In the scorching heat, a Samaritan woman came to the well to draw water. She wanted to avoid encountering other people as she was shunned and rejected. This woman was ostracized and marked as immoral. She was an unmarried woman living openly with the fifth in a series of men. She wanted to avoid all the wagging tongues of the townspeople. Jesus asked the woman for a drink of water. He told her He could give her living water so she would never thirst again, living water which gives eternal life and divine grace. At first the Samaritan woman didn’t fully understand, so Jesus using divine insight addressed her situation of living with a man who was not her husband. She needed to confess her sins and change her life before she could obtain this life-giving water. As they talked, the woman voiced her faith that the Messiah was coming. Jesus answered, “I, the one speaking to you – I am he” (John 4:26).

Living water is the spiritual refreshment that comes into our soul after we encounter Jesus and confess our sin and need for salvation.

As the woman began to grasp the reality of her encounter with Jesus, the disciples returned. They were equally shocked to find Him speaking to this woman. Leaving behind her water jar, the woman returned to town, inviting the people to “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did” (John 4:29).

She was given the opportunity to have her sins forgiven and to realize what it means to take freely of the water of life. The Samaritan woman’s spirit was enlightened and illuminated by Jesus. Living water is the spiritual refreshment that comes into our soul after we encounter Jesus and confess our sin and need for salvation. This story teaches us that God wants to give us sinners His love. God values us enough to actively seek us, to welcome us to intimacy, and to rejoice in our worship. A person like the Samaritan woman, an outcast in many ways, had a special understanding of what this means – to be wanted and cared for when no one, not even herself, could see anything of value in her. That is grace.

Candace Maxymowich Winnipeg, MB Who’s your favourite person in the Bible and why? The woman at the well is a great story of God’s love and acceptance. It’s full of many truths and powerful lessons for us today. Jesus knew her history and still accepted her. Thierry Meier

Real Friends Words by Spencer Meisner We hear the question all the time: “Would you rather have two best friends, or ten great friends?” Whatever the variation of the number is, I think when we’re younger we assume that we want more friends, the more the better! As I’ve grown up, and have watched others grow up around me, I’ve seen my answer to this question change.

into what it meant to be a great friend. If we sing the song “Jesus is a friend of mine,” then we intrinsically know a little bit of what it takes to be an amazing friend, because, as that weird ‘70s (or-possibly’80s) song says, “I have a friend in Jesus.”

First off, we can’t think that we are above these friends that we are chasing after. Not only are we supposed to be humble and put their needs before ours, but Jesus wasn’t We know we’re made for relationships, we ashamed to be our friend. social media you want to use, but be present and attentive. Most importantly, you need to sacrifice to be a good friend. In fact, “greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus says those words in John 15:13, and those should be our guiding principles to being real friends. Short of taking a bullet for your buddy, you can sacrifice time for them. You can sacrifice five dollars to bring them a frappuccino (or three dollars during Frappy hour). You can sacrifice a day off to cry with them. You can sacrifice your free evenings to build into them as they try to navigate the ins and outs of their walk with Jesus. If we want real friends, we have to start being real friends. If we crave deep relationships, there’s no doubt in my mind that our friends are, too. Here’s to real friends.

What’s too revealing in the summer? Words by Ruth Kyeremeh It’s so exciting when you can finally say, “The hot weather is finally here!” Now that it is, I want to hear what you think it means to dress appropriately. Do you think some Christians overreact with this whole “it’s too revealing” thing? Should we just wear turtlenecks and sweatpants every day and everywhere? We asked a few young Christians their opinion.

Priscilla du Preez

Nadine Agyei

Wearing revealing things is a problem when it becomes a serious distraction to everyone around you and even yourself. No matter how we want to spin it, it draws attention that one may not be looking for. Now I get it, if trendy clothes are revealing you don’t want to be out of style, but I really think there can be a happy medium. For example crop tops, I wear them but one won’t notice unless I lift my arms. I wear a high-waisted skirt, pants or a jacket just to keep it appropriate. I personally don’t like being exposed because it draws the attention I’m not looking for. If I’m wearing a fitted dress, the length needs to be longer and my chest fully covered. That’s one example. If you have to question if something is wrong, chances are it is, so why not get creative and come up with something better?

Binta Seidu Appropriate summer dressing to me is when you’re able to go out confidently without having to repeatedly adjust your chosen outfit. I believe your comfort should not be compromised when putting together something to wear. Especially in the summer season with the heat and humidity. As a Christian female I understand the struggle when it comes to finding appropriate and less revealing outfits, but it’s not impossible!

“I believe your comfort should not be compromised when putting together something to wear.”

You can wear almost anything, but how you wear it is what makes the difference. You can wear a dress but where does it end on you? You can wear leggings but maybe a shirt that covers your bum. It also depends on where you’re going. For example, what may be appropriate to wear to hang out with your friends may not be for work. It’s not like your Christianity depends on the length of your skirt, but you should dress in a way that shows you respect yourself and have respect for whatever occasion or people you’re meeting.

Cynthia Gyimah We’re all made in the image of Christ, and our body is a temple of the Lord, a place where God resides. I’m sure if you saw a broken house that looked ready to fall apart you wouldn’t want to stay in it. It’s the same way with how we dress and look. Conduct yourself in a manner which is pleasing and acceptable to God.

Ruth Kyeremeh Caledon, ON Who’s your favourite person in the Bible and why? Moses, because he was such a quiet and timid person but allowed God to use him. MUSIC REVIEW

If you’re digging old Hawk Nelson, FM Static, Blink, Waterparks, or any of the legion of other pizza-loving, Vans-wearing pop punkers currently rocking the scene, then Light The Way could be your next band obsession.

Artist Light The Way Album Dude, Lame

Light The Way (LTW) is a California pop-punk band made up of a few guys that are all about “playing shows, having fun, sing-a-longs, heartbreaks, spirituality, and friends.” Dude, Lame is a six song EP released by Indie Vision Music, and a solid follow up to their EP, Grace, which came out earlier this year. Dude, Lame is angsty, melodic, and a lot of FUN. Light the Way is killing the pop-punk world right now alongside other indie acts such as Heart Like War, and are well deserving of a big break. If you’re digging old Hawk Nelson, FM Static, Blink, Waterparks, or any of the legion of other pizza-loving, Vans-wearing pop punkers currently rocking the scene, then Light The Way could be your next band obsession. Though they do give us a solid dose of high-energy pop punk, LTW throws a couple of curveballs by slowing things down with a piano-backed spoken word track mid-record, and closing out the album with an acoustic song. “So Stoked” delivers hard and fast punk beats, nifty guitar parts, and the always catchy vocals that are dying for a sing-a-long. “Voices” slows the tempo and shows an even more poetic side to the band, stretching way beyond the genre standby topics of girls and hangouts. Although, of course, those subjects show up too. “Stag Line” is the required “song about girls,” but, rather than the typical heartbreak song, it takes a slightly different approach. It’s

definitely easy to relate with. We hear the vocalist asking, “What did you mean when you sent that last text?” and wondering how long his singleness will last. At the end, we hear him share advice he once received: “Life’s not about getting the girl, man.” Instead, he directs us to “seek God/ play to your strengths/ work hard/ stay humble/ and you’ll be in the right place.” The standout track of the EP is for sure “Dead Head.” This song is catchy, fast-paced, and brimming with hooks that will have you dropping this song onto your favourite playlists. Dude, Lame is Spirit-filled, high speed fun with a solid message. It’s available digitally at music.indievisionmusic.com/album/dudelame-ep, and soon physical copies, called Deluxe Edition, Man will be released, which feature all tracks from Grace and Dude, Lame.

The Wish Isabel’s Story Isabel Schuppli never thought a trip to Ethiopia to meet her family’s Compassion child would be possible. First of all, Canada is half a world away from her Compassion child, Kidist. And last year another obstacle made a trip seem even more unlikely: at 16, Isabel was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. “You never really expect something like that to happen to you,” Isabel says. “The whole year after was a very long process.” Her therapy involved surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, and a week of quarantine in the basement of her family’s home. During this time the Children’s Wish Foundation heard about Isabel’s story and offered her a wish. Isabel was initially unsure what to wish for, until her mom suggested they visit Kidist. “I thought that was a really cool idea because she’s like part of the family,” Isabel explains. “It felt like it was the right thing to do, and I was really excited.” In the final moments before meeting Kidist at her Compassion Centre, Isabel’s excitement amazing to get to turned to know her in other “...the nervousness melted nervousness. ways, like hanging “I wasn’t really away as Isabel and Kidist out with her and sure what understanding what spent time together.” to expect!” she’s like.” Isabel says. Be Still Words by Brittany Pettinger The future can be a scary thing. One moment you’re entering your first year of high school, and the next you’re applying for college or university. The pressure to have a plan after high school can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Ultimately, it comes down to what you want, not what everyone else wants you to do. When I was in Grade 9, I was already getting asked, “What do you want to do when you graduate?” Back then, I thought I was going to become a paramedic. By the time I reached Grade 12, my plans had changed about ten times. Almost everyone from my graduating class decided to either work or attend college or university. I ended up traveling to Ireland with YWAM (Youth With a Mission) for five months. I have officially been home for good since February 2016. Throughout my time traveling, I spoke to God about what I was supposed to do when I finally came home. After much prayer and consideration, I have decided to get a degree in social work, which I will be doing this fall. It took me two years after high school to decide what I wanted to do with my life. It takes some people far longer than that. There is no rule that says you need to have a plan for your life by the time you’re 18. God has gifted us with free will, and He will always be there to help us with the big decisions in our lives. “The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14). The world is a scary place, but if we truly believe God has a plan for us, then we have nothing to fear.

God Is Here

My life-changing trip to Haiti “I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. If you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it full speed, embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good.” – British novelist Roald Dahl Words by Abigail Morgan I’ve always been an individual who followed her dreams, even the big ones. I remember at a really young age looking online for TV shows and commercials that I could try out for. I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be an actor, a singer, I wanted to live in Hollywood and be a movie star. Later I wanted to be a teacher. I thought it was similar to being an actor in that I could talk in front of a room of people all day. At 14 I was blessed with the opportunity to go to Haiti on a mission tour. I worked in a Haitian school partnered up with a Canadian teacher. With much surprise, I didn’t find my passion for teaching. I still think education and school are important, but I know now I’m not called to be a teacher. That week I also spent some time in the medical clinic with my mom. It was a very small clinic, but would see up to 80 people a day. Long story short, I fell in love. There are so many emotions I felt and saw. From the excitement of hearing you’re pregnant or have conquered a sickness, to the sadness of finding out a disease has developed, or feeling pain from an injury, or the joy of hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time. I would consider myself a compassionate person who can easily feel empathy for others. This empathy I felt over and over along with the joy, sadness and pain that all circulated at once was like a drug to me. Five years later I find myself sitting in Haiti during a month-long internship writing this article. I have allowed God to lead my life in so many ways. He has told me yes and He has told me no. Through my ups and downs I have called out to Him. Now here I am 14 | LOVEISMOVING.CA

For me, it wasn’t only the big white smiles of the cute kids, the faithfulness of the village to Jesus, or even the everyday grace God gave me to continue throughout the long hot days. It

wasn’t even the miracles I saw in the clinic every day. It was the gratitude He bestowed in my heart for the many things He has blessed me with. Not only the tangible things but also the emotional things. I remember sitting in my room getting ready for bed with my roommate after a long day. She had her usual complaints of the heat and of the food. But for some reason that particular night she was a little more sour. She started ranting about how there were no good weights to lift and she was too tired after our long, hot days to work out. She complained of her lumpy mattress and missing her memory foam back home. The AC only comes on late at night and turns off early in the morning, but of course, she wasn’t thankful for that either. After reflecting, I realize God doesn’t want me to use the problems and complaints of others to alter my experience with Him. I know this because I still have the same strength every morning here in Haiti to get up, throw my hair in a messy bun and put on running shorts and go. This disconnect from familiar and addictive things can be tough. But I have never been so in touch with God. I remember one night the power wasn’t working and so I decided to pick up a book and start reading. It was

my first time picking up a book for pleasure in months. My eyes felt at ease from not looking at a screen, and my mind felt calm. I wasn’t pressured to look at what others were doing and compare or feel obligated to engage in conversations online. I felt peace simply sitting alone in silence for the first time in a long time. My list of things I’ve learned from being in this country and from the Haitian people could go on forever. My experiences were rare. From helping deliver a baby, to speaking and encouraging the teen girls, evangelizing at homes and families in the village and even simply holding and showing love to some orphan children. I learned more about myself as God stretched me further than I’ve ever gone. I never truly realized all I can do until I was completely immersed in Him. I would like to encourage you to find your passion. I know it’s easier said than done. But try to find the thing in your life that makes you want to jump around and scream out Jesus’ name. I often must remind myself that the road to destruction is wide and the road to everlasting life is narrow. Don’t let your passion be mistaken or let it fall into that wide gate. Make mistakes, let God move you, teach you, love you, and change you.

The Soul’s Roadtrip Words by Conor Sweetman We’ve heard it both said and sung: Life is a highway! And we will indeed be riding it all night long, so we need to check our maps and signs to make sure we’re happy with where we’re steering our lives. The road to sin is wide and veers off into the fast lane – it’s easy to pick up speed without realizing how fast we’re going in the wrong direction. The vast array of media outlets around us can become a thunderstorm of distraction on our drive to holiness. The furious raindrops of notifications pelt the windshield of our soul, while the thick fog of unhealthy entertainment clouds our vision and renders us incapable of finding our way. With such a storm in effect, we can easily miss the signs that would have directed us back onto the straight and narrow streets to our desired destination. Movies, music and other pastimes can offer genuine relaxation and inspiration. But, in the current realm of entertainment, permeated by artists and corporations that rely on the subversion of God’s beautiful structures, we must be utterly aware and discerning – high beams flicked on. Renew your mind through daily devotion and worship, and the wide and popular road of hazardous entertainment will begin to seem less appealing.

Our destination is eternity – this current landscape is not our home. Rather, it is the scenery that leads us there. We can enjoy the landmarks and scenic pleasures, but must ensure they don’t divert our eyes from the road. Don’t bring the storm upon the driver’s seat of your soul unnecessarily – steer for sunny skies and seek to live in the light. By navigating the winding cultural roads with wisdom and clarity, we can ensure we don’t find ourselves at a dead end that the world argues is simply a “nice view.” We are called to be in the world but not of it, to have an elevated perspective of the cultural landscape, where we can shine the rays of our headlights into the dark areas of culture.

It was after praying with television host and producer, Lorna Dueck, that she proposed to Joel Gordon and Benjamin Porter that they should consider sharing The Love Movement’s stories of love in action on television. It is because of the forgiveness of sin and the righteousness of Christ that we are saved, so we share a very unique experience with God because of forgiveness. God forgives, and also provides us with grace so that we in turn can forgive. That isn’t to say, however, that this is an easy task. It can feel far more comfortable to hang onto anger and negative emotions toward people who have done you wrong. Let’s say your father was a professional athlete, and passed on an athletic gene that enabled you to also be a professional athlete, and then taught you as well. Regardless of how difficult the journey to become a professional athlete may be, it’s undeniable that a unique bond or experience is shared between father and son or daughter. The Lord our Father passes along the Holy Spirit, giving us the ability to forgive. The Scriptures teach us as well as give us tools so that we may learn how to forgive. Using the analogy of the athletic father, it can help us appreciate the unique bond we have with God in regards to forgiving. So, I pray that this summer, as animals have awakened from a long winter slumber, and plants come to full bloom, allow us all to awake from a long winter slumber and allow forgiveness to bloom through grace which is provided to us all. Amen.

God forgives and also provides us with grace so we in turn can forgive too.

Something wonderful happens when a Christian forgives. Grace is abundant, and the Holy Spirit is working His magic within us, which in turn can strengthen us.

FORGIVENESS IN FULL BLOOM

Forgiveness can be one of the most difficult struggles in life. All cultures know the moral obligation and need to forgive. But in the Christian faith, something even deeper is experienced – forgiveness is commanded of us by the Lord Almighty.

Learning to live with being ignored but not persecuted Words by Jesse Hove Thousands of Christians are martyred every year. Around the globe Christian persecution has increased in many countries. This can sometimes cause us Christians in the Western world to want to claim this persecution for ourselves. Our loss of place in politics and mainstream culture make us envious of a time when society was once generally deemed Christian. But it is a mistake to lump in our cultural persecution with the life-threatening persecution faced by our brothers and sisters around the world, and diminishes the great sacrifice they make for the sake of the gospel. We are not persecuted in the Western world – more often we are ignored or other groups are favoured, and that might not be such a bad thing. With a diminished role in the power and politics of society, we can more closely emulate Jesus’ commands, and the early Christian followers living under Roman rule. Hebraic prophets like Daniel

give us insight into how to follow God while living under a different worldview than our own. To be honest, we’re not great people when we have power anyway (most human beings aren’t due to our sinful nature).

As more people in our society uphold a belief system based on our creaturely relationship to God, the less power individualistic humanism will have on our society.

We still play an important role for our brothers and sisters being persecuted around the globe. We can bring both awareness and monetary funding to wherever Christians are being persecuted. We can also support immigration policies of welcoming others. Contrary to some popular political opinions, welcoming all nations and religions increases not only the number of devout Christians in our country, but more generally increases the type of social policies which give value to our relationship with the Creator.

As more people in our society uphold a belief system based on our creaturely relationship to God, the less power individualistic humanism will have on our society. This doesn’t mean we don’t distinguish the truth of Christ against other religious belief systems. But it does mean we will learn to work more closely with all religions which respect this creature-andCreator relationship. As we celebrate both our similarities and differences we will be able to garner more democratic influence upon the governing policies of our country. This is one way to affect the political sphere without being tempted by the universal human lust for power.

When the Enemy Tries to Slide Into Your DM Words by Rosemond Ennin

Have you ever asked yourself why some of the things you want to accomplish never get done?

Have you ever had someone try to slide into your DM (Direct Message)? Perhaps on Twitter or Instagram a stranger or acquaintance you haven’t spoken to in years tries to start a private conversation with you out of nowhere, like “Hey, shortie. What’s up? *inserts weird emoji*.” The moment you receive the message, you have 101 questions about this person. Who are you and who gave you permission to try to slide into my DM? It’s easy to put someone in check when they slide into our DM, but are we as quick to put the enemy in check when he tries to slip negative thoughts into our minds? It’s more important to guard our hearts and minds than it is to guard our social media accounts, because as we think, so do we become. Have you ever asked yourself why some of the things you want to accomplish never get done? It all begins with our thoughts. What is the condition of your mind? Is it a dumping ground for the enemy? Can he slide into your “DM” and easily leave messages like, “There is no point, you are going to fail”? These are not DMs you can ignore. When it comes to the enemy, the Bible reveals there is absolutely no truth found in him. In fact, when he speaks, he does not speak of something that he knows will happen, but he speaks of his own resources. John 8:44 tells us Satan is the father of lies!

You can’t keep quiet when the enemy throws negative lies your way. You must respond with truth. The word of God is true, and what is written is also written about you. A lying thought against your ability deserves to be silenced with truths like these: “The one that is in you is greater than the one that is in the world” and “All hard work brings a profit” (1 John 4:4, Proverbs 14:23). But what happens when we keep silent? The comments will likely continue. You see, our silence doesn’t scare the enemy. Our silence welcomes the onslaught of more negative thoughts. Jesus showed us what the enemy is truly afraid of – the Word of God! – when He was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4 and Luke 4). If God’s thoughts to us are not only precious but numerous (Psalm 139:17), then it doesn’t make sense to give our attention to the cunning and evil thoughts of the enemy. Such thoughts only produce death in us, but the words and thoughts of God produce life in us! Watch who you let “slip” into your DM. Do not give the enemy a free pass to slip lies into your mind. Real Talk

Stock Market Faith Real Talk with Nathan White Have you ever felt like God was leading you in a direction that doesn’t make a lot of sense? A path that looks foolish to everyone around you? Even you find yourself doubting His directions? That’s exactly what happened to my family at the end of February, 2017. We packed up our car with enough clothes for a week, got our little boy strapped into the car seat and hit the road. We drove across Alberta from Edmonton to Canmore, stopped for the night, and the next day made it to Kelowna, B.C. We didn’t have a plan or appointments lined up, but we just knew we had to come here. We started looking for some places to live, praying that God would open a spot for us and give us favour. After a couple options that looked too good to be true, and one that looked terrible but attainable, we found ourselves feeling really discouraged. We prayed again, “God we believe this is where we need to be, so take care of us and give us a place to live.” The next day we found a

condo we liked, the owners asked us a few questions and decided they would like to rent it to us! A real answer to prayer in a rental market that is very difficult. My wife and I don’t have jobs. We moved here with our savings and no prospects for work. To many it seems kind of foolish. I have had several internal battles when I think about the fact I led my family into a situation I don’t know how to get out of. But then I stop and remember. I know how to hear God’s voice. I remember He has led me before and always been faithful to fulfil His promises. I believe He will do it again. Something awesome happened when we came here. I found out my old small group leader from 10 or more years ago moved here a couple weeks before to pastor a church. We sat down for coffee to catch up and I told him this story of how we came to Kelowna and how crazy it sounds to most people.

“We didn’t have a plan or appointments lined up, but we just knew we had to come here.”

He said something that day that really

helps me when I experience moments of doubt. “Never sell stock in what God has told you no matter if everyone around you thinks it’s crazy.” He meant if you truly believe that God has told you something or called you to do something, it’s important to listen to Him. Don’t “sell your stock” or dismiss the promise of God in your life. You never know what it could turn into. But take time to pray about it and confirm it really is God speaking, because if it’s not Him the result won’t be pleasant. Is God speaking to you about something you need to do? Does it seem crazy? Does it make no sense? My advice, don’t sell your stock in what God has promised you. He will always keep it. Always.

Nathan White Edmonton, AB Who’s your favourite person in the Bible and why? Ananias. Reason being, he was obedient to God in one way. And through that God saved and transformed the life of Paul. archaic understandings of gender roles it has supported over the years. Nowadays, it’s often the princesses doing the rescuing. In fact, they’re often assertive, proactive and more courageous than their male counterparts. For example, Moana may need Maui’s help, but not because he’s a strong male. Rather, he draws much of his strength from her ferocity. Disney’s new vision first started becoming clear with the educated and fiery Belle in the 1990s Beauty and the Beast. In the 2017 live-action remake, this princess is not only educated but also empowering, teaching young girls in the village to read for themselves. She has a greater sense of the world around her and the limited worldviews of others (“Your library makes our village seem small,” she says).

Poisoned Princesses Disney’s Monopoly on the Monarchy

Okay, I admit it. It’s a little weird. As a (nearly) 40-year-old male pastor, the last thing that you’d think I’d be writing about would be Disney princesses. Still, with the release of their latest remake of Beauty and the Beast, I can’t help but think about how much has changed in a very short period of time for this contemporary image of women – and what the Bible says about labels.

in distress were becoming viewed with greater suspicion. This placed Disney in a difficult position where they were suddenly forced to rethink the nature of a Disney princess, lest they lose their market. And, maybe, things have begun to change. In recent films, Disney has shown they are deliberately attempting to deconstruct the very princess stereotypes they worked so hard to build.

Much of our modern understanding of In their recent remake of Beauty and the what it means to be a princess stems from Beast, Belle – one of the pillars of Disney’s Disney’s powerful influence. And she’s even less complicit to her capture than the animated version – in the 2017 version she stays at the castle as an act of sacrifice and even generates a much more natural relationship with the Beast than in the original. This is a far better example to the young women of this generation (and to the boys as well). As a pastor, I constantly think back to Scripture and how terms like leper, tax collector or sinner are always culturally imposed and create spaces of judgment and limitation. These loaded terms lose their power in Christ, where “there is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female.” In Christ, labels fall away and we are invited to be at our most whole. I would even argue that Jesus empowered women throughout the Gospels in ways that biases within his culture and the church prevented at the time. It’s possible that Disney is finally buying into what we’ve known for ages: People can’t be limited to any specific label – and labels are, at best, incomplete pictures. While the cynical might simply call it a marketing ploy, it’s definitely a step in the right direction to see Disney offer young girls role models that contain qualities of being strong, educated and sensitive. After all, like Moana says, there’s no telling “how far [they’ll] go.”

BOOK A Time to Die Author Nadine Brandes

Parvin is a 17-year-old girl who knows when she will die. Now that she has wasted most of her life, what will she do with the time she has left? How will she be remembered? A Time to Die is an incredible first book to Nadine Brandes’ dystopian Out of Time Series. It is fast-paced with a ton of plot twists. The main character has to go through a lot, including a fair bit of violence. She questions her own faith, bringing her closer to Christ in a world that has rejected God. On her journey to find meaning, she is challenged by the lives and actions that others have chosen to live during their time. This is a great teen book for those who have enjoyed The Hunger Games and Divergent. It makes you think about your life and your values. I highly recommend it. 4 out of 5 stars

Seasons of Silence Words by Allison Wolf

“Lord, what do you want me to do?” This is a question I have asked God many times, especially over the last few months. I am finishing my third year at the University of Manitoba, and have one more semester before I finish my Bachelor of Arts degree. Considering the time remaining, I have been thinking long and hard about what comes after I receive that little piece of paper that tells me I’ve graduated. Going into university, I thought I wanted to be a teacher. It didn’t take long for that to change. Since then, I have desperately sought out a new career goal. I pray about it

daily. I ask God why He sent me to university in the first place. Why spend all that time, money, and energy for seemingly nothing? God answers me with silence. I ask God for guidance, to show me the path He wants me to take. God answers me with silence.

“Sometimes I feel very lost and confused. Though I am not sure why God has remained silent with me, I do know this: God wants the best for His children.”

Each summer between school years, I have gone home. This summer, however, I have decided to stay in the city. It has proven a challenging endeavour. I managed to secure a living space, but had not yet secured a job. After asking God to help me find one, He once again answered me with silence. When none of the jobs I applied to led anywhere, worry and doubt overcame me. Then, I was offered a position at a bookstore. Though the hours are minimal,

it has not only reassured me that I made the right choice, but has also strengthened my faith that God is in control and will provide. Continuously pleading to hear God’s voice only to not hear Him can be a very discouraging thing. Sometimes I wonder if God is even listening, if He even cares. Sometimes I feel very lost and confused. Though I am not sure why God has remained silent with me, I do know this: God wants the best for His children. The best. Not our best. Our best doesn’t even come close to His.

Paradoxically, I’ve come to realize that I have heard God’s voice in His silence. No, He has not given me specific answers to my specific questions, but He has told me that He loves me. And so I will hold onto that in my seasons of silence, because God’s love is the only answer I need. With God’s love, anything and everything is possible.

I am Loved Word by Andrew Porter

When people are shopping for a particular item they tend to look at the label of the product to see what the brand name is. Have you ever gone from rack to rack or aisle to aisle or webpage to webpage looking for that one name? I have. In our culture we determine a product’s worth by the name on its label. Sadly, we have carried this over in our judgment of people. We live in a generation where a lot of young people today are asking the question, Who on earth am I? We allow so many different voices to label us and define who we are based on our appearance, social circle, past, interests and hobbies, intelligence, where we work, where we shop, university major, relationship status, popularity. As a result, people are walking around feeling insecure in who they are and where they belong. If you are placing your confidence and trust in Jesus Christ for your salvation, then according to Colossians 3: 1-4 you are forever joined, linked, and chained to Jesus Christ! Your identity is found only in one place: Jesus. But what exactly is your identity in Christ? Paul, the writer of Colossians, tells us in Colossians 3: 12 that we are chosen, holy, and dearly loved! If you have been around the Church for the past couple of years you might have come across the song “Good, Good Father.” Part of the chorus goes like this: “And I am loved by you / It’s who I am, It’s who I am, It’s who I am.” I love how that repeats. We need to hear that over and over and allow God to speak that over our lives.

“You are loved by the Universe Maker! That’s who you are! You are unconditionally loved by God for all eternity despite the sin, the habit, or addiction in your life.”

You are free to receive it. You are loved by the Universe Maker! That’s who you are! You are unconditionally loved by God for all eternity despite the sin, the habit, or addiction in your life. It is who you are. You are a loved, cherished, and prized son or daughter of God Almighty in Christ both now and forever! When you begin to see and embrace who you truly are, you will find rest, freedom, and security in the One who defines you. The One who made you and formed you in your mother’s womb is the only one who gets to speak the first word and final word over your life. And He is saying: “You’re mine! You’re holy! You’re pure! You’re spotless! I love you!” These are constant, unchanging truths about who you are.
