T

hank you so much for picking up our 5th Annual CapeMade Field Guide! We started this publication five years ago to highlight Cape Cod’s locally made, grown and owned, and provide them with a platform to share their brand stories with locals and visitors alike.

Get Involved

In this year’s guide you will find we have kept our focus on those businesses and the people behind them, as they are what truly make this place special. We also share news about our initiatives that we carry out year-round on the Cape like the LoveLocal Fests, Project Cape Made and the LoveLocal Collective – all of which help us fulfill our mission to be a lifestyle brand that focuses on community advocacy and on educating consumers on the importance of shopping local.

Shop Local Over the past seven years LoveLiveLocal has worked hard to become a Cape Cod lifestyle brand focused on community advocacy and on educating consumers on the importance of shopping local. We have highlighted the great people, places and businesses that make this community special and have thrived through our monthly emails and social media channels. We have created editorial content, infographics and film shorts to communicate why it is important to shop local: the more money spent on Cape Cod with local businesses, stays on Cape Cod; by our calculations by almost twice as much. We have asked consumers what it would look like if the Cape lost many of our local businesses because local consumers have decided to spend their money at national chains and online retailers.

But think about it: when you shop online with a corporate retailer, none of that money gets reinvested in Cape Cod. So, this year we aim to develop a practical solution to this very real threat to our local economy. By the end of 2019 we plan to develop a comprehensive ecommerce site where any and all local businesses can sell their products, and where Cape Cod consumers can shop local 24 hours a day, seven days a week. LoveLiveLocal.com will be your one stop shop for everything from gift items and home dÊcor to clothing and household necessities and will perform at the same level as any corporate e-tailer. Why do we feel the need to do all of this? Because we truly believe this is what small local businesses need in order to survive and thrive in this new digital economy, and to take back the business that has already been lost to national chain stores and online behemoths. Because we believe humans are hard-wired for connection and being a part of a community – it is an intrinsic human need. Local businesses are run by people with whom we all share a connection whether it is a close friend or someone who holds the door for you at the local bank. When you shop local you are purchasing goods and services from a person who is an integral part of the community on which we all depend.

And we have provided locals and visitors with opportunities to connect and shop with local makers and businesses through our LoveLocal Fests (see page 67), this CapeMade Field Guide and through our very own retail space, the LoveLocal Collective located at 539 South Street in Hyannis.

Because we love Cape Cod and want to see it flourish.

What we have heard time and time again is that people are connecting with our message; they want to shop local and shop local only. But what we also hear is that online shopping is super convenient and too easy to give up. Online shopping continues to grow rapidly, and for good reasons.

Upper Cape Bourne

Bourne is located in the westernmost part of the Cape and is your first stop after “crossing the bridge” on Route 28. Follow the coast down Shore Road stopping at Gray Gables Market to stock up on provisions before a beach day at Monument Beach, or plan a lazy drive through the villages of Bourne starting with Gray Gables, Monument Beach, Pocasset and finally Cataumet. Grab a coffee and lunch at the Daily Brew before exploring the Bourne Conservation Trust trails including Little Bay and Monks Park or head to Dimmick Waterfront for a scenic picnic or sunset overlooking Red Brook Harbor. Cruise down Cape Cod Canal bike path to the Bourne Historical Society and the Aptucxet Trading Post or visit the campus of the impressive Mass Maritime Academy. Reward yourself with some cranberry ice cream from Somerset Creamery. Head to the Chart Room for fun, outdoor dining, beautiful harbor vistas and world famous mudslides or to the Lobster Trap for uber fresh seafood, water views and tasty drinks. Keep the party going at the Trading Post Lounge (locally referred to as Gerts) or the Courtyard for rowdy fun and entertainment.

Falmouth

Whichever way you enter Falmouth, one of the Cape’s largest towns tucked away in the Upper Cape, you will come across some beautiful scenery. If you find yourself passing through East Falmouth, after visiting the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and learning about the Cape’s natural world, be sure to turn left off the main road to take the beach route into downtown. You’ll escape the traffic and take in the most gorgeous views of Vineyard Sound. Coming in through North Falmouth on the windy road of 28A be sure to stop by Bourne Farm which is located on over 49 acres of fields, trails and woodlands that overlook Crocker Pond, or watch the most gorgeous sunset at Old Silver Beach. When you get to downtown Falmouth, you’ll find yourself on the town’s vibrant and eclectic Main Street, which is filled with independent businesses where you can shop, dine and take in some culture. Spend some time learning about the area’s history and most famous songwriter, Katherine Lee Bates, at the Museums on the Green, browsing shops like Eight Cousins Bookstore, Cape Chic, Green Eyed Daisy, Harvest of Barnstable and Soul to Sole, or eating in one of the many mouthwatering restaurants like the Glass Onion, Osteria la Civetta, Pickle Jar Kitchen, Anejo and Bear in Boots. A little off of Main Street you can make your way to Highfield Hall and explore their gardens and the trails of Beebe Woods or head down to the Falmouth Harbor on a Thursday in May through October for their bustling farmers’ market. The village of Woods Hole is also not to be missed. There you will find yourself surrounded by world renowned scientific institutions, as well as cute shops and tasty food establishments like Quick’s Hole, Pie in the Sky (where you might be lucky enough to catch Wolf Pizza popping up!) and Water Street Kitchen. On your way there be sure to stop at the Knob, Nobska Light or schedule a tour and tasting at Nobska Farms. And if you’re really adventurous you could do this all by bike on the Shining Sea Bikeway which spans from North Falmouth to Woods Hole. Where ever you pick it up, you will be sure to take in some breathtaking sights of the ocean, woods and beautiful salt marshes.

CAPEMADE FIELD GUIDE 2019

Mashpee

Mashpee may be one of the smaller towns on the Upper Cape, but it is still jam-packed with things-todo, fun sunning spots, and also plays a central role in our nation’s history.

Sandwich

Sandwich is considered Cape Cod’s oldest incorporated town, so it is no surprise that when you visit the area you will be surrounded by historical sites like the Hoxie House Museum, showing what family life was like in the 1600s, the Dexter Grist Mill, where you can check out a working mill as well as a herring run, and the Sandwich Glass Museum, which emphasizes the contribution of the glass industry to the local community. Another popular cultural attraction in the area is Heritage Museum & Gardens, which offers a connection to nature, inspiring gardens, an antique car museum, and an antique working carousel. On Main and Jarves Streets you’ll find local shops like Modern Vintage, Snow Goose Shop, Brown Jug and The Spotted Cod, and spots to get a bite to eat like the Daniel Webster Inn, Beth’s Bakery & Cafe, the Belfry Inn and The Next Door Burger Bar. If you find yourself out of downtown Sandwich and on 6A, be sure to swing by Titcomb’s Bookshop, and Crow Farm’s farm stand, which stocks up on vegetables, fruit, local Rocky Bottom Honey, fresh baked breads, and pies most of the year, or the Green Briar Nature Center where you will find respite in their wildflower garden and their ever-working jam kitchen. You can also scoot off of the main road and head to North Shore Boulevard to check out the cottage communities that will instantly make you feel relaxed and in a state of bliss. Or head to Town Neck Beach, where you can watch boats pass through the Cape Cod Canal, and check out the Sandwich Boardwalk which stretches over the saltwater marsh and offers spectacular views of Cape Cod Bay.

Mashpee is where the Cape’s Native American history is the strongest, as it is home to the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum, the Mashpee Archives and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe who host their annual Powwow the first weekend in July every year. The area is also where you will find the hubs of some Cape Cod craft beverages like Cape Cod Coffee Roasters and the Naukabout Brewery, where you can sip on a beer, listen to local live music and snack on food from their rotating cast of food trucks. You can also find fine dining establishments like Bleu, Trevi and Estia, more casual lunch spots like Wicked Pizza and Bagel Haven, along with treat factories like Washashore Bakery, Ghelfi’s Candies, and The Chocolate Rose. On rainy days you can take the family to the Cape Cod Children’s Museum for kids activities and interactive exhibits or to the Riddle Escape Rooms where you need to find your way off of a pirate ship or out of a dragon’s den. When the sun is out sign up with Rideaway Adventures for a kayak or SUP tour or head to South Cape Beach where you will find over 3 miles of ocean and bay beaches, sand dunes coastal ponds and salt marshes, as well as plenty of opportunities for picturesque hiking. There are plenty of local shops to peruse Mashpee Commons like Hot Diggity, One21, Mocean, Fox & Kit, and Inner Glow Yoga. Popponesset Marketplace also offers outdoor cafes and colorful boutiques like the Cranberry Collective. Or pop over to Deer Crossing to see J Miller Pictureframer & Gallery, where he can help you preserve and display your family heirlooms and sports memorabilia and you can check out the gallery of local artists.

If getting outside and into nature is your aim, then be sure to check out the Shawme-Crowell State Forest, Scorton Creek, or the Maple Swamp Conservation Area.

The Cape’s biggest town is Barnstable, encompassing 76 square miles between Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay and consists of seven villages. Starting with Cotuit, get cultural at the newlyrenovated Cahoon Museum of American Art or the always buzzing Cotuit Center for the Arts. While in the village book a spa treatment at Therapeutic Bodywork, check out the artwork at Chapman Art Gallery and enjoy a burger and a pint at the Kettle Ho. Grab picnic fare and a bottle of wine at Cotuit Market before taking in the scenic views at Ropes Beach or Loop Beach. Moving east to Osterville, grab breakfast at Fancy’s Market, Amie Bakery or Earthy Delights before heading to Dowses Beach or hitting Main Street for shopping at Shoe Salon of Osterville, Mocean, Osterville Hardware, Pocket Full of Posies and Oyster Island Emporium. Spend the day on Hyannis’ Main Street and enjoy shopping, dining and a touch of history. Start your day with breakfast at the Daily Paper, a smoothie at The Local Juice or coffee at Rendezvous Cafe followed by explorations through the JFK Museum, the Zion Union Heritage Museum or the Cape Cod Maritime Museum. CAPEMADE FIELD GUIDE 2019

Dennis

Whether you visit Dennis Main Street on the northside of the Cape or the southside village of Dennis Port, there are plenty of great experiences to be had in the town of Dennis.

Yarmouth

Because of its beaches, cultural institutions and entertainment options Yarmouth is the Cape Cod town that could be considered the best playground for young families. In addition to Bass River Beach, Gray’s Beach and Seagull Beach where kids can find endless amounts of fun in the sun, Yarmouth is also home to mini-golf courses like Pirate’s Cove and Wild Lagoon, the Cape Cod Inflatable Park, and Skull Island Adventures where you will not only find mini-golf but also an arcade, batting cages, kick ball cages, a driving range and go karts. It is also where you will find the Whydah Pirate Museum, where you can learn about the Cape’s pirate past and get a glimpse of the world’s only recovered pirate treasure. If your family is into animals and learning about the natural world, Taylor Bray Farm, which has been operating for hundreds of years, is open to the public to check out the historical farmhouse, and hang out with the goats, cow, donkeys, chickens, and sheep. Adults can have fun in Yarmouth too. Take a meandering drive along Route 6A stopping in Yarmouth Port for breakfast or lunch at The Optimist Co. or Inaho for dinner, and Design Works for shopping for unique vintage finds and inspiration for your home decor. Cultural institutions like the Edward Gorey House, the Captain Bangs Hallet House and the New Church will give you a taste of the area’s history and natural world, and allow you to explore the works of the area’s great artists.

The beaches on the bay side are some of the locals’ overall favorites. Chapin Beach, Corporation Beach and Mayflower Beach are all gorgeous and great for people of all ages. You can stop for sandwiches and snacks at Underground Bakery, Kender & Sisters Kitchen and Coffee, and The Merc, and after the beach get ice cream from the Ice Cream Smuggler or Cape Cod Creamery and visit area shops like Elburne and Seaside Design Studio. If you are primed for a nice night out, head to the Cape Cod Museum of Art or a movie at Cape Cinema and out to dinner at The Pheasant or FIN, or post up at Harvest Wine Bar & Gallery for some of the best drinks and live music on the Cape. On the southside, you’ll find remarkable views of Nantucket Sound when you head down Lower County Road to Old Wharf Road, making your way to the beach community of Dennis Port. West Dennis Beach offers a family-friendly spot with a playground and beach activities such as kite flying and windsurfing. Or you can spend time in Sea View Park with snacks from the Wee Packet or after a hearty meal and crafted cocktail from the Cleat & Anchor. There is also a lot of great adult fun to be had in this part of Dennis: shop with Faces Gallery and On the Fringe in downtown Dennis Port, do a tour and tasting at Devil’s Purse, have an exceptional foodie experience at Clean Slate Eatery or spend the night listening to live bands and eating traditional Irish fare at O’Shea’s Olde Inne.

On the other side of town you could start at Ann & Fran’s for a bite to eat and then take a right onto South Sea Avenue towards Great Island Road for breathtaking views of Nantucket Sound and Lewis Bay. Make your way onto Old Main Street and stop at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod where on any given day you will find art exhibits, makers in their spaces, musical performances and community events. Lower Cape Chatham

One of the best things to do when exploring Chatham, which is located at the southeastern tip of Cape Cod, is to drive Shore Road which traces this outer edge of Cape Cod and offers some of the most awe-inspiring views of the area. Main Street, Chatham is one of the town’s main attractions where walking the length of it is a mustdo so you can take in all of the shops that offer art, books, quirky gifts, clothing, toys and specialty foods like Chatham Clothing Bar, Fisherman’s Daughter, Yankee Ingenuity, Sundance Clothing, Gustare Olive Oils & Vinegars, and Where the Sidewalk Ends. There are also a variety of eateries and restaurants downtown and just outside of town that will satisfy any food palette. On Main Street you’ll find Bluefins Sushi & Sake Bar, the Impudent Oyster, the Chatham Squire and Buffy’s Ice Cream. Off the beaten path you’ll find traditional family cooking with a contemporary flair at the Talkative Pig, gourmet burgers of all kinds at Mom & Pops Burgers, the best burritos around at the Corner Store, a great cup of coffee at the Chatham Filling Station, and creative and tasty eats at Hangar B. Taking in and learning about the natural environment of the area should also be on any to-do list. Immerse yourself in the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge where you will find plenty of bird and seal watching opportunities, walking trails, exhibits and hands-on games in the visitor center. You can also learn more about the great white shark, its presence on Cape Cod and the most recent research through exhibits, videos, displays and virtual reality at the Chatham Shark Center. Or take it all in from up in the sky on Stick'n Rudder Aero Tours who host sightseeing rides around the gorgeous lower Cape area.

40

Brewster

Being located on the bay side and along 6A, means Brewster offers something a little special from the rest of the Lower Cape. The beaches like Crosby Landing, Linnell Landing, Breakwater Beach and Paines Creek give you the most gorgeous sunsets and views of the famous Brewster Flats, a phenomenon created by the ebb and flow of the daily tides. Your ride along 6A will bring you to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History where they have interactive exhibits, teach visitors about local ecology and wildlife, and trails on their 400 acres of conservation land, as well as Drummer Boy Park, where you can picnic overlooking views of Cape Cod Bay, take in some area history, or maybe happen upon an antiques fair, community gathering or farmers’ market. This area of Brewster is also home to a number of local art galleries like Struna Galleries, Sydenstricker Glass, Dickerson Gallery and Teichman Gallery with styles and mediums ranging from contemporary to classic and oil painting to sculpture. If you are feeling hungry or parched, there are food and drink options of all kinds: coffee and light fare at Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters, seafood classics at the Brewster Fish House and a sophisticated food and cocktail menu at The Flats. For an after dinner drink and some live music you can always head to the Woodshed for some dive bar fun. On 6A you will also find access to the great outdoors at Nickerson State Park for camping, biking or hiking on the 1900 acre preserve, or spending the day troutfishing. Be sure to stop off at the Brewster Store if you need extra supplies. Brewster is also a great spot to pick up the Cape Cod Rail Trail. You can rent bikes at Brewster Bike or the Rail Trail Bike & Kayak Shop, and grab a snack at Guapo’s Tortilla Shack or at Eat Cake For Breakfast before you head off!

CAPEMADE FIELD GUIDE 2019

Orleans

Orleans is the hub of down Cape with no shortage of excellent restaurants, stylish shops and beautiful beaches.

Harwich

Harwich might be considered one of the quieter towns on the Lower Cape, but that is not necessarily a bad thing! It simply means the businesses, activities and cultural destinations throughout the town are all the more special. The area is home to Harwich Junior Theater, one of the Cape’s most well known and accomplished theater programs which offers year round entertainment of plays like Freaky Friday, Pippin and Tuck Everlasting, as well as educational workshops. One of Harwich’s best restaurants, Viera, is conveniently located near the theater so you can make it a whole night of good times. It is also where you can learn about the Cape’s most famous crop: the cranberry. The Harwich Historical Society features Cape Cod’s largest exhibit dedicated to interpreting and presenting the history of Cranberry Culture on Cape Cod. And just around the corner from there, you can see first hand how cranberries are used to flavor First Crush Winery’s Cran Blanc wine at their tasting room. You should also spend a few hours in Harwich Port where you’ll inevitably feel transported into small town life. The short but sweet Main Street offers watering holes like the Mad Minnow Bar & Kitchen and The Port, as well as spots like the Snow Goose Shop and Sativa to pick up some of the most popular local brands and unique mementos. The summer months offer up Musical Stroll Nights where local bands play a variety of music along the street.

Start your day with a smoothie bowl at Viv’s Kitchen, bagel sandwiches at Jo Mama’s or a breakfast bowl at the newly opened Whisk before a day at the beach or a day of shopping. Head to Nauset Beach for 10 miles of coastline and outdoor summer concerts in the gazebo. On your way back shop handmade jewelry and gifts at Adorn or chic styles at Weekend. Grab burgers at the Knack, tasty burritos at the Corner Store or hipster eats at Sunbird. Peruse unique goods at Plant Work Shop, Designs by S&R and Homegrown Boutique, or fashionable threads at Vintage in Vogue, If the Shoe Fits and Blake & Co. On Saturdays enjoy the Cape’s biggest farmers’ market, sharing a field with the Orleans Artist Shanties along the Cape Cod Rail Trail that runs through town. Shop for your garden and more at The Farm and Friend’s Marketplace. Enjoy freshwater fun at Pilgrim Lake off Herringbrook Road or the sandy shores of Skaket Beach. Soak in sunset views at Rock Harbor before grabbing some local pints and fun at Hog Island Brewery. After the sun sets, enjoy wildly creative cuisine at Vers, gastropub eats at Rock Harbor Grill, elevated New England staples at Mahoney’s Atlantic Bar & Grill or innovative dishes at ABBA. Satisfy your sweet tooth at The Local Scoop or Hot Chocolate Sparrow. Continue the night with a show at the Academy of Performing Arts, a game of bowling (and some mean BBQ) at the Orleans Bowling Center or some live tunes at the Barley Neck Inn or the Land Ho.

LoveGiveLocal LoveLiveLocal launched Project Cape Made in 2016 to support the local makers, growers and business owners that make Cape Cod the unique and distinct place that it is. Since LoveLiveLocal’s mission includes a commitment to fostering an economically sustainable, creatively engaging future for the place we love so much, we wanted to come up with a way to give these locals a little bit of extra cash in their pocket to help them with expenses that will enable them to go to the next level in their businesses – from purchasing materials to covering legal fees to boosting marketing efforts. Through sales of PCM branded merchandise, and thanks to the support of The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod we are able to give out four $500 micro grants every year.

Fall 2018 grant recipients: Dreamsongs and Slyk Shades. Dreamsongs started with a Red-tailed Hawk’s feather that Lyza Roderick found at work one day – she felt the urge to make something meaningful with it, and so began her venture away from 2-dimensional art and into making dreamcatchers. She was introduced to crystals as a teenager, and she thought they would be the perfect addition to a dreamcatcher in order to give it a “bonus” attribute. In addition to dreamcatchers, Dreamsongs now also includes a variety of crystal jewelry and mobiles.

While suffering through chronic illness, Josh Fitzmaurice found a way to distract himself, be creative, and connect with his love of nature by starting his sunglasses line SLYK Shades. In January 2017, Josh began teaching himself fashion design through YouTube, and in July of 2018 SLYK began selling stylish and unique men’s and women’s sunglasses online. All shades are eco-friendly, handcrafted from wood and sometimes abalone shells, and are engraved with an inspirational quote to help motivate you to keep going through all life’s challenges.

Lyza’s favorite thing about being a local maker on Cape The Project Cape Made grant helped Josh purchase Cod is “the community. I wouldn’t be where I am now a laser engraver machine so he can do custom orders without the support from my local customer base on site. and retailers.”

Scarabocchio translates to scribbles, doodles, and designs that flow into classic style. When creating original pieces, Lynn Abravanel and Patty LeGrand, are constantly experimenting with new techniques for their hand-wrought sterling silver jewelry. With their guiding theme as "Inspiration Reflected in Artistic Design'" they are influenced by the surrounding coastal beauty on Cape Cod.

A community resource for career-aged, females navigating stresses caused by breast cancer like menopause and chronic fatigue, not normally seen at a young age. Better Together focuses on survivorship with emphasis on relatable peer support and well being. They have also created a fun, high quality, feminine line of apparel, as well as beaded bracelets (Beads for Breasties) as a means of fundraising.
