A WARM WELCOME, YEAR-ROUND

W

hile the summer months are, of course, the most popular time to enjoy Cape Cod, the seasons here come with their own special vibes that make each visit feel new. Plan around one of the many fun events happening year round for a truly authentic experience.

SPRING SPLENDOR Cape Cod bursts to life when spring arrives - the good days are prizewinners and there are unusual moments to seize that won’t be repeated any other time of year. Our spring picks: In March, look for the right whales to return to Cape Cod Bay. April brings Daffodil Days at Spohr Gardens {April 23 + 30} and Aston’s Bloody Mary Mix-Off Autism Awareness Fundraiser {April 17} at EmBargo. Brewster In Bloom celebrates its 30th year May 6-8 and on May 21, local female musicians team up with nationally known acts for the Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis. A quintessential Cape Cod tradition, the Figawi Charity Ball {May 21} & Race Weekend {May 2830} marks the annual sailing race from Hyannis to Nantucket.

SWEET SUMMER There’s no doubt that Cape Cod shines in summertime. Now is the time for Cape Cod Baseball League games, sipping a Cape Cod Beer, and making memories. Kick off the season at the Provincetown International Film Festival {June 1519}. Honor Cape Cod’s Native people at the 95th Wampanoag Tribal Pow Wow {July 1-3, Mashpee} before enjoying classic Fourth of July celebrations in almost every village. Find wellness by the sea at the 3rd annual Love Yoga Fest Cape Cod {August 6+7, Hyannis}. Support our local commercial fishermen at the annual Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance “Hookers Ball,” one of the best events of the summer {August 6, Chatham}!

4

FESTIVE FALL Our worst-kept secret? For locals, summer begins in September. This shoulder season is truly the time to be on Cape – stellar weather and the kind of events you will want to plan long weekends around. Ride the Last Gasp, a 62-mile bike ride from Sandwich to Provincetown for charity {Sept. 18}. Then comes a trio of fun, family friendly festivals: WOMR’s CranJam at the Annual Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival {Sept. 17 + 18}, the 3rd annual Vinegrass Festival of roots and Americana music at Truro Vineyards {October 2}, which is fast becoming a classic event; and of course, the legendary Wellfleet Oyster Fest {Oct. 15+16} – a dreamlike meeting of freshly shucked local bivalves, cold beer, delicious food, local shopping, great friends, and rocking music.

WINTER WONDER Cape Cod winters are both unpredictable and a bit magical. Hosted by Cape Cod musical icon Chandler Travis, the annual Christmas Cavalcade is a down Cape tradition that benefits the Noah Shelter for the homeless and features an incredible line up of local musicians. There is nothing more festive than a holiday stroll in any one of our quaint villages lit up with twinkle lights and bursting with good cheer – check lovelivelocal.com for dates. First Night events in Chatham and Sandwich have become legendary over the years, with a First Light Provincetown event joining the party most recently. Once you have recovered from the festivities, you can focus on training for the 2017 Hyannis Marathon in February!

WHY SHOP LOCAL?

L

ast year, we introduced our ‘Shop Local’ infographic in order to demonstrate how dollars spent in Cape Cod businesses tend to generate more money for the Cape overall, and we encouraged consumers to shift just $50 of

their spending from a national or online store to a local establishments in order to generate millions of additional dollars for our local economy. We often hear that it can be hard to find necessities at local stores, and there is a perception that goods and services purchased locally tend to be more expensive. LoveLiveLocal co-founder Amanda Converse decided to explore what it would be like to spend a majority of her income at locally owned establishments. So, for all of 2015 Amanda analyzed her spending habits, as well as discovered where and how to spend a majority of her money locally. As someone who was already a

8

conscious local consumer (it is kind of our “thing”), she found it to be an interesting exercise in analyzing her spending habits from home décor and swimsuits, down to where she replaced her car battery and filled up on gas. The overarching lesson of this evaluation was that by shopping smart consumers can localize their spending without trying too hard and without spending more. If we were all more connected to our community (online and IRL) we could certainly gain the knowledge needed to do so. It might take a little more effort in the beginning (as anything new does), but the literal and figurative payoffs to the community in terms of increased wages and salaries, and supporting local nonprofits and community organizations is worth it. Its beaches and natural beauty certainly make Cape Cod special, but the local shops, restaurants and cultural attractions make Cape Cod unique from every other coastal town, and the people who own them and work for them give this place its character. So, in our opinion one of the best ways to show the local love is to shop at locally owned stores, dine at locally owned restaurants and use local providers for personal and business services. Shop local… It matters!

IT MATTERS. LoveLiveLocal has even encouraged consumers to post their local purchases online (for the chance to win LLL swag and a cash prize) using the hashtag #ishoplocalcapecod to show the cyber world just how easy and special it is to choose Cape Cod-owned businesses first. Our holiday contest winner shared about her experience:

It really wasn’t hard ... if I had no idea “ what to get someone for the holidays I was WAY more likely to find inspiration in a small local shop than a big box store - more unique choices. I was also surprised to see the response to my posts - lots of comments like ‘I love that place,’ or even better, ‘Oh! I forgot about them, I’ll have to go there!’ Thanks so much for the motivation! - Casey Gallant, Orleans
