LOCAL AGENDA Cape Cod Calendar Essentials
Get out your planner! While Cape Cod is best known for glorious summers, each season brings a shift not only in our weather but in the overall vibe of our area. The off-seasons are just as wonderful – even if a bit calmer! Plus, there’s always something to do, whatever your interests.
SPRING
One of the loveliest times on the sandbar, spring brings milder days, re-opening of our favorite ice cream shops, and the opportunity to finally enjoy our natural environment without snow gear on. Hit the links on one of our more than two dozen public golf courses, like the Blue Rock Resort and Golf Course. Nature enthusiasts can spot right and humpback whales as early as April – sometimes from the shore, or head out on a Hyannis Whale Watcher cruise – and the migration of herring from the ocean to fresh water in April and May is an annual rite. And until mid-May, dogs are still allowed on most beaches! Don’t miss some of our favorite events:
APRIL 9
Aston's Bloody Mary Mix-Off
sample the best Bloody Mary’s on Cape Cod at EmBargo’s annual autism awareness and fundraising event
MAY 13
Cape Cod Women's Music Fest

JUNE 14-18
18th Annual Provincetown Film Festival
one of the preeminent film fests in the country; expect the best in independent films and creative vibes
FALL
For many of us, Labor Day signals the best season on Cape Cod – locals’ summer! The weather is still sweet but the traffic is lighter and all our favorite restaurants and activities are open for business. Plus, you’ll find less expensive rates for lodging! Enjoy the fading of summer and transition to classic scenes of changing leaves and the cranberry harvest. Our mild fall season is an ideal time to enjoy outdoor festivals and activities, like these:
SEPTEMBER 3

WHY SHOP LOCAL? Cape Cod has been internationally known as a popular summer haven for city people for over 100 years. People love the more relaxed way of life, as well as the unique local inns, shops, restaurants and eateries all the way from Falmouth to Provincetown. Over time Cape Cod’s year round population rose, as did the number of small locally owned businesses. However, in the 1970s and 1980s, the United States saw a proliferation of malls and strip malls nationwide. Communities began to homogenize across the country, as the same chain stores began to open everywhere. And unfortunately Cape Cod was no exception. Over the past several decades larger enterprises are the fastest growing business sector in our area. The economic impact felt when these large box stores open in local communities can be devastating. Many consumers have practically abandoned their Main Streets and downtowns primarily made up of locally owned businesses for these corporate epicenters filled with cheap goods and low wage jobs. What’s more, online shopping has also grown significantly, and when consumers shop online it completely diverts any wealth from and further damages small local economies, and puts local businesses out of business. Imagine what Cape Cod would look like if we lost many of our local businesses because local consumers have decided to spend their money at national chain restaurants and online retailers?
10
The unique nature of our community would disappear – the Cape would be like anywhere else; it would no longer be special. And who would want to continue to visit a place that is like Anywhere, USA? There are plenty of beachside communities for people to experience. When the tourists stop coming, our year round population will decline. Those big box stores will no longer meet their sales numbers, and having no real tie to this community, they will close up leaving the area with even more empty storefronts and an empty local economy. But as consumers, we can stop this from happening by choosing local first. It is so incredibly important to the overall health and vitality of this community, which is why it should be important to residents of this beautiful place, as well as visitors who enjoy the Cape for short periods of time. When we choose to spend our dollars on goods and services from local businesses, it means the money spent in the local community stays here – spent on wages, using local services, buying local goods, and supporting local nonprofits and community organizations - by more than twice as much. So, if you love Cape Cod - put your money where your heart is. Your dollars can make all the difference.

UPPER CAPE
The Upper Cape is the entryway to the Cape, consisting of the towns of Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth and Mashpee. Much of the area has an old New England feel; you can explore and experience the beginning of Cape Cod from the Native Americans to the first settlers. The Upper Cape also houses one of the most prominent American centers of science in Woods Hole.
A few of our favorite things
best kept secrets
* You must get outside in Falmouth. On foot head
The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in East Falmouth is an environmental research facility that manages 2500 acres of water, marshland, beaches and uplands, and an area where visitors can swim, fish, shellfish, hike, boat, and bird watch. Also in East Falmouth is the Moonakis Café, where you can grab breakfast all week. The pancakes are mouth-watering; the eggs are tasty and the homemade granola is wholesomely good. Learn about the history and culture of Cape Cod’s indigenous tribe from the Stone Age to present day at the Mashpee Wampanoag Museum, located in one of the oldest remaining homesteads in Mashpee.
to the Knob in Quisset Harbor – the trails will lead
you to a point that feels like the end of the earth. By bike, the Shining Sea Bikeway is not to be missed
– every bit of it is spectacular.
* Who knew watching the herring run could be so fun? See this important fish – a crucial link in the coastal food chain and an important part of Cape
Cod’s economic history - migrate in the spring on the Mashpee River or Mill Creek in Sandwich..
* It’s not a visit to the village of Woods Hole in
Falmouth without a trip to the Water Street Kitchen, a restaurant with a special view and an even more special menu.
Explore
1. Driving along Route 6A in Sandwich never disappoints, and will give you a taste of old Cape Cod
with its windy roads, huge old trees and marked historical sites. We recommend popping into the some of the antique shops that are dotted along the byway - there is plenty of cool stuff to look at and history to absorb, and you never know, you may get inspired by the vintage style or find something you didn’t even know you were looking for! And don’t miss Titcomb’s Books, which is a Cape Cod treasure all on its own.
2. Cape Cod’s downtowns, with their locally owned shops, attractions and restaurants, are what make our area unique and interesting. Spend the day walking up along Falmouth Main Street grabbing a bite at Pickle Jar Kitchen, shopping at Cape Chic and exploring the Falmouth Historical Society grounds. If you are in Sandwich, visit Beth’s for a tea and a scone, and the Spotted Cod and the Brown Jug for some extra treats and mementos. In Mashpee Commons, check out the beautiful pieces of art at Cape Kaleidoscope or McDermott Glass, and grab a cupcake from Washashore Bakery or a glass of wine from Trevi Café & Wine Bar while you sit by the fountain.
3. Head to the other side of the bridge to Buzzards Bay {it’s still the Cape!} and check out one of
our local treasures, the National Marine Life Center, which serves as a marine animal hospital and rehabilitation facility, as well as an education center for both adults and children. During school vacations and the summer months, the NMLC is open for the public to learn more about the patients, the animal care technicians, and to learn about the health of our oceans.

Osteria La Civetta {Falmouth}
1. Grab a lobster roll from the Lobster Trap
{they’ve been serving them up since 1969} and head to the Bourne side of the Cape Cod Canal for boat watching. On the Sandwich side? Café Chew has you covered for sustenance, and the Canal Park has plenty to see between the fishing boats and Coast Guard barracks. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the dolphins swimming through the channel whichever side you’re on.
2. Instead of or in addition to spending the
day at the beach, head to Chapoquoit Beach or Old Silver Beach on the west side of Falmouth after hours {no beach sticker required!} for the most epic sunset. Bring a picnic from the West Falmouth Market or ice cream cones from Eulinda’s on Route 28A and stay for star gazing after the sun goes down.
3. Relive over 100 years of Cape Cod’s
natural history at the Green Briar Nature Center & Thornton Burgess Society in Sandwich, where you can experience guided walks in the woods, bask in their wildflower garden, watch their signature jam being made, discuss folk art, and learn about Burgess’ inspiration for his Tales of Peter Rabbit {the Center is adjacent to the famous “Briar Patch”}.

MID CAPE
As its moniker suggests, the Mid-Cape is the center of Cape Cod in geography. Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Dennis are bustling and beautiful year round, as they are also the centers of commerce, entertainment and health care.
Taste Clean Slate {West Dennis}
one of the most unique dining experiences
you can have on Cape Cod, this unassuming restaurant serves meals with the seasons,
best kept secrets Gina’s by the Sea in Dennis seems like it hasn’t changed since the 70s – the food, staff and décor make us feel like we’re in another era and we love it! Scargo Tower off of 6A in Dennis offers views east and west of Provincetown and Plymouth. The area attractions get their name from Native American lore about Princess Scargo and her potential suitor. The Cape Cod Community Media Center is a local gem – from sharing local news to hosting local music and poetry events to leading trainings and workshops on recording and production… and the first Sunday in December you can attend the Holiday LoveLocal Fest there!
Explore
using ingredients from American farms Chef Jay Montigel knows and loves.
Scargo Café {Dennis}
a great spot for pre or post Dennis theater viewing, and a regular haunt for year
rounders, Scargo offers fare for all tastes and atmosphere for all types
Katie’s Ice Cream {Hyannis}, Four Seas Ice Cream {Centerville}, Cape Cod Creamery {S. Yarmouth + Hyannis} ask a few locals their favorite local ice
cream shop in the area and it will likely be split evenly between these three shops, all offering homemade and tasty flavors
Spoon and Seed {Hyannis}
this rustic spot is worth visiting for its
breakfast and lunch menu that focuses on using local and seasonal ingredients and adding a little flair
1. Go on your very own local museum tour and learn about what made Cape Cod what it is today.
Start at the Cahoon Museum of American Art in Cotuit, and then head to the Centerville Historical Museum for their latest fashion exhibit. Next you can view the beginnings of the Coast Guard at its Heritage Museum in West Barnstable. Then head to Hyannis to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum which celebrates Cape Cod’s maritime and economic history, and round out your trip with a little folklore and treasure at the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth.
2. Hop on a boat tour out of Hyannis Harbor on the Bay Spirit or Hy-Line Cruises to see a view of
the Cape from Nantucket Sound. Journey past lighthouses and old Cape houses, and if you time it right, you’ll catch the sunset out on the water. When you disembark, make sure you browse the Hyannis Artist Shanties before going to the Black Cat or the Shack out Back for some live music and a beverage.
3. Grab {or rent} a kayak or paddleboard and navigate your way down Bass River – the longest river
on Cape Cod, and one with a lot of history {rumor has it Leif Erickson took a gander on it over 1000 years ago}. There are many launching points in both Yarmouth and Dennis like on Pleasant Street {Yarmouth} and at the Bass River Bridge (Dennis Port), and there many inlets and ponds to check out along the route.

in Centerville, arguably one of the most popular beaches on the Cape, then walk, ride or drive to Main Street, Centerville to browse the 1856 Country Store, order your favorite flavor at Four Seas Ice Cream, and when you’ve had your fill, pop next door to Edelweiss, which carries Scandinavian toys and gifts.
2. Main Street, Dennis Port has come alive in the past few years. Shop the local stores Sodium, Faces Gallery, Hot Diggity {the pup deserves a little treat}, de Castellane Gallery, and Porter & Mags, and grab some food at Etzy’s Bistro & Wine Bar or at the Red Nun {the Buddha Bowl is our personal favorite}.

Hyannis Main Street to the Harbor, and hang out
on the Adirondack Chairs at Bismore Park, watch the fishing boats come in and unload their catch while listening to the sounds of the LoveListenLocal Singer/Songwriter Series {see page 71} * Go

Once you’ve given your brain a workout, head down 6A to get the blood flowing on the famous Cape Cod Rail Trail (stop at Ferretti’s Market for a snack). Brewster Bike or the Rail Trail Bike Shop can get you kitted out to hit the trail. Wrap up your day with dinner at Stone L’Oven Pizza or the Brewster Fish House.

new Beach House Spa at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, or receive a massage, acupuncture, or cupping treatment at Blue Thistle Acupuncture. In Harwich, the Cape Cod Lavender Farm, located on 12 acres tucked into conservation land, is a lovely escape. Look for the “Enchanted Garden” with its faerie houses and beautiful plants. Chatham’s Chase Park offers a quiet place to stroll and a labyrinth where you can find your own “true North.”

THE CAPEMADE FIELD GUIDE 2017
GIVING BACK Independent makers, growers and business owners are essential to preserving Cape Cod’s unique cultural fabric and independent spirit for future generations. Many of them cite lack of capital as a factor in slow growth or product development delays. Often, a relatively small amount is all they need to continue advancing their dreams.
Recently, we were thrilled to present our first award of $500 to Aiste, the project’s inspiration! As the fund grows, we look forward to making additional grants.
In 2016, we had a mid-winter conversation with Aiste Zitnikaite, the creative force behind local eco and ethical clothing line Devinto, about this topic. It seemed crazy to us that an incredible up-and-coming designer like Aiste should have to struggle to buy fabric for the coming season’s orders because of limited cash flow. Her plight compelled us to think about how LoveLiveLocal could help to mitigate similar challenges faced by other entrepreneurs across the Cape. Since LoveLiveLocal’s mission includes a commitment to fostering an economically sustainable, culturally engaging future for the place we call home, being part of a solution seemed like a natural fit. After drawing inspiration from both Aiste’s situation and other community groups around the country, we created Project Cape Made. This new LoveLiveLocal apparel line would bring awareness and micro-investments to local entrepreneurs through a series of limited edition products. Fifty percent of the profits from Project Cape Made sales would be awarded to worthy local makers in need. The first Project Cape Made tees and sweatshirts flew off the racks when we launched the initiative at our July 2016 LoveLocal Fest, and sales of our cozy threads have remained strong.
I’m so thrilled to be part of this community. I feel really honored that LoveLiveLocal made it so much easier for me to do what I do. - Aiste Z, Devinto Interested in supporting Project Cape Made? Shop the line at squareup.com/store/lovelivelocal, at LoveLiveLocal headquarters {535 South Street, Hyannis}, or at our LoveLocal Fests {page 71}.

Tucked into the National Seashore’s Marconi Station site in South Wellfleet, a 1.2 mile walk through the other-worldly Atlantic White Cedar Swamp is a meditative way to spend a summer morning or winter afternoon. Known as Twenty Summers, Provincetown’s historic Hawthorne Barn becomes a salon of sorts each summer for a one-month run of engaging conversations featuring contemporary artists, authors and others. A summertime tradition on the Wellfleet Pier is a throwback to simpler times, and always attracts a crowd. 1. See the landscape through the eyes of Edward Hopper, who spent many summers painting here.
Start at the Truro Historical Society’s Highlands House Museum, a turn-of-the-century summer resort. Pick up sandwiches and snacks from Truro’s Salty Market and make your way to Ballston Beach, or to Corn Hill, where the Pilgrims first encountered the Cape’s Native people. Check out Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill for workshops and events designed to inspire, or visit Jobi Pottery – a Truro tradition since 1953!
2. Hike just over a mile to Provincetown’s Wood End Light via the West End Breakwater, where you’ll
have incredible views. Bring snacks (141 Market and Far Lands Provisions have nice selections) and check the tide before you go (start on an outgoing tide)! Or, try the nearly six-mile Province Lands Bike Trail loop, which will take you through pine trees, dunes, and cranberry bogs. Hungry now? Try Local 186 or The Lobster Pot for hearty options.
3. Bone up on early American history while taking in the Cape’s unique views. Eastham’s Fort Hill Rural Historic District is part of the National Seashore and encompasses forests, fields, and salt marshes with 200 years of history. Learn about the whaling past of the Edward Penniman house, as well as the Nauset tribe’s traditions. Wrap up the day with a sunset stroll at First Encounter Beach.

1. Provincetown is often outrageous (in the
best ways), but it’s equally easy to have a low-key time. Climb all 116 steps of the Pilgrim Monument and then head to Spindler’s for a throwback cocktail and charcuterie. Or, grab coffee and a treat at Happy Camper before visiting the amazing Pürl yarn and fiber shop to create something beautiful with the ocean as your inspiration!

At Jewelry Studio of Wellfleet, pick up a pendant cast from a real local oyster – then stroll to the Frying Pan Gallery, where local artists are showcased in the town’s last standing oyster shack! Mac’s Shack and Winslow’s Tavern both feature locally sourced cuisine and great drinks. Wellfleet Preservation Hall offers an impressive range of programming from yoga and dance to film and food – and if you haven’t been to the Wellfleet Drive-In, it’s a must-do!
3. The Outer Cape is home to many cultural
gems, especially for theater and music lovers. Catch national musical acts under the tent at the Payomet Performing Arts Center, or enroll the kiddos in Circus Arts Camp!
