OUR MISSION

2022

Love Live Local is a Cape Cod organization dedicated to community advocacy and educating consumers on the importance of shopping local. Our mission is to foster an economically sustainable, creative and exciting future for the Cape and help all those who love this place participate in keeping it special.

Welcome to Love Live Local’s th 8 Annual Love Local Field Guide! Part of our organization’s nonprofit mission is to help all those who love Cape Cod participate in keeping it special - most people don’t want to live or visit somewhere that looks just like everywhere else - and much of the work we do is around cultivating, maintaining and celebrating a sense of place. That is what we do our best to do within these pages - in the town guides, the images, and through our ad partners, all of whom are strong local businesses. The local businesses you will read about in these pages and those that you will come across on the Cape’s Main Streets and side roads, and at community events, are a huge part of what makes this place unique. They are also what keep our local economy vibrant and sustainable. When they thrive, our community thrives. We started this guide in 2015 as a way for local makers, businesses and brands to share their stories and it has since evolved into one of the region’s foremost handbooks to authentically experiencing all that Cape Cod has to offer from our irreplaceable local businesses to awe-inspiring natural landscapes to outdoor activities and cultural experiences. We encourage you to use this guide to learn about the whys and hows of shopping local and to explore, enjoy, taste and sip your way from Buzzards Bay to the Long Point Light Station connecting with a deep sense of place all along the way.

Thank you to our advertisers who not only support this publication but also allow us to carry out this mission.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2022

The harms and instabilities created by the corporate consolidation our research reveals are many, as are the reasons behind it, and both policy makers and consumers play a role in mitigating the impacts on small businesses and local communities. Strengthening and sustaining our local economies will require a policy environment at the federal, state, and local that encourages competition and levels the playing field for small businesses. The United States has a long history of passing legislation meant to preserve competition and reduce concentrations in market sectors. But since the early 1980s the federal agencies that enforce the antitrust laws, have taken a hands-off approach and given corporations like Walmart and Amazon the freedom to use their size and financial power, and no other competitive skills, to consolidate and concentrate markets. Additionally, if we want the local businesses in our communities to stick around and keep Cape Cod unique and economically viable, it is up to consumers to think and buy local first when making purchases for both goods and services. 4 MYTHS OF SHOPPING LOCAL While many people are aware of the virtues of supporting local businesses there are still a few stories people tell themselves about why they can’t or shouldn’t shop local. For the most part dispelling these myths is about challenging your own assumptions and changing a few habits, which can make a huge difference for our local businesses and our local economy.

1

It doesn’t really matter

Although it is hard to imagine that as an individual our purchases have a significant impact in such a large global economy, it is important to know that they do make a difference for the local business’ bottom line and the Cape Cod community. Amazon ships out almost 2 million orders a day. In that regard, your purchase wouldn’t have an impact. But for local businesses that do about .00001% of that daily business, each and every customer that walks in their door plays an important role in their story and their success. Also, spending your dollars locally generates much more economic prosperity, as local businesses reinvest their sales income into the local economy at a much higher rate. In fact our research shows, if 10% of the retail purchases made on Cape Cod with a national corporation were made with a local store, we could generate $110 million more for our local economy.

3

Shopping local is inconvenient

Most local businesses have an online presence where you can shop for products and services virtually any time of day and have your order delivered to your door or ready for you to pick up at your convenience. If you prefer in person interactions, oftentimes a Saturday shopping excursion is faster at a local store because the dedicated staff is so good at helping you find exactly what you are looking for rather than leaving you to wander an anonymous one-size-fits-all store or behemoth of a website without any assistance.

2

Local businesses offer less selection

True, logistically smaller brick & mortar establishments might have less space in which to stock and store items, but many businesses will work to find what you’re looking for by placing a special order with their suppliers or by offering an alternative that is just as good. However, local shops often carry independent designers or artisanal products you don’t see in larger establishments and the more small businesses we have in every sector of the economy, the more choice and selection we will have overall.

4

Buying local costs more

While it is sometimes the case that local goods and services are more expensive, for the most part, local businesses price their products competitively (that’s just good business). If something does happen to cost more, it’s important to note that local businesses tend to offer higher quality goods and have a greater working knowledge of the product. And when you consider that spending your money with local businesses like retailers and restaurants means that according to our research 2-4 times the amount of that money is reinvested in the Cape Cod community, paying for that marginally increased price probably feels good after all.

BOURNE, the gateway to Cape Cod, has much to offer on both sides of the bridges.

Whether it’s heading on or off Cape, Buzzards Bay is worth a stop. Cruise Main Street to find local spots for eating, drinking and learning a little something about the local wildlife. For the health conscious, there’s the Blended Berry and Vela Juice Bar, and for a bit of comfort food there’s the Stomping Grounds Grille and the Rod & Rail. Mahoney’s on Main, Mezza Luna and Krua Thai are great options for a variety of taste buds. For books, coffee and community be sure to visit Footprints Cafe. Take your treats from Mic’s Main Scoop and enjoy it under the Railroad Bridge at Buzzards Bay Park before heading over to the National Marine Life Center to learn about their rehabbed marine animals. Grab a bike from Buzzards Bay Bikes or Canal Cruisers and take a spin down the Cape Cod Canal bike path. Capeside, explore the villages of Bourne by making your way down Shore Road first passing the Museums at Aptucxet where you’ll find small historical buildings and replicas, art galleries and outdoor installations that tell the story of local history. Make a pit stop at Gray Gables Market for provisions before hitting Pocasset where you can take in nature through the Little Bay Walking Trails, some great views at Monk’s Park or a day at the beach at Monument Beach. Hit the water on a Cape Cod Canal Cruise or paddle your own vessel from Red Brook Harbor. When hunger calls, you'll find sustenance at the Daily Brew, the Corner Cafe, Lobster Trap, Chart Room, Parrot Bar & Grill or the Courtyard, and dessert at Becky’s Bakery or Whistle Stop Ice Cream Shop and don’t miss the newly updated Trading Post Lounge.

20

FALMOUTH is the Cape’s second largest town, bustling with a year-round vibrant downtown and community.

Traveling in via East Falmouth stop and enjoy a pint at Bad Martha’s Brewery or the signature Rose Mermaid Water at Cape Cod Winery, and pop in to the newly opened Cape Cod Cape Verdean Museum. Take the beach route (a must!) into downtown for opportunities to shop, sip and sup. Before venturing into the heart of Main Street, stop at Shipwrecked overlooking Falmouth Heights Beach or further inland at Aquatic Brewing and the newly opened Tiger Ramen or enjoy treats at Betsy’s Diner or toys from Trendy Tots. Head to Story, Celebrations, Green Eyed Daisy, Eight Cousins Bookstore and the Gilded Oyster to shop for her and to On the Water, Eastman’s Hardware and Eugene Henry’s Gastronomical Delights for him. Enjoy the iconic Highfield Hall and the Museums on the Green and learn about Falmouth’s most famous songwriting feminist, Katherine Lee Bates. After shopping and absorbing the culture, refuel at Pickle Jar Kitchen, Devour, Añejo, Bluefins, or Osteria La Civetta. Take a detour to Woods Hole via car stopping at the Knob and Spohr Gardens for a walkabout or rent a bike at Corner Cycle and ride down the Shining Sea Bikeway, running all the way from North Falmouth. When you arrive, do some shopping at Inlet or Liberty House. Grab a quick bite at Quick’s Hole Taqueria, a drink at the Landfall or Captain Kidd, an epic dinner at Water Street Kitchen or a craft donut from Jimmy’s. If you time your trip right you’ll get to see the Eel Pond Drawbridge do its thing, and for one week in the summer the Woods Hole Film Festival comes to life. Conclude the day with sunset views at Chapoquoit Beach, Black Beach or Old Silver Beach with nibbles from the West Falmouth Market, the North Falmouth Cheese Shop or a cone from Eulinda’s.

Before heading into the hustle and bustle in town, it’s always a good idea to take in the view at Chatham Light, breathe the air at the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, explore the Forest Beach Conservation Area, attend an exhibit at the Chatham Creative Arts Center, watch the daily catch come in at the Chatham Fish Pier, or become an amateur marine biologist at the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Once you’re ready for some shopping you’ll find all of your wants and needs for your closet, tabletop, bookshelves and pantry at shops like Yankee Ingenuity, Fisherman’s Daughter, Sundance Clothing, If the Shoe Fits, Mayflower Shop, Cape Life, Gustare Olive Oils & Vinegars, and Where the Sidewalk Ends. Just off the main strip, you’ll find great deals and styles at Changing Tides Consignment and At Home Fine Consignments, and a bit of inspiration at Pilgrim’s Landing. When hunger strikes head to Chatham Cookware for a sandwich, Chatham Squire for a brew or the Impudent Oyster for classic local fare. Head away from downtown to grab brunch any time of day at the Chatham Filling Station, Branches Grill for CaribbeanAmerican cuisine, Mom & Pops for gourmet burgers, or The Chatham Pier Fish Market for fish and chips or a lobster roll.
